- Finally putting the last floorboards down! Unfortunately we’re in the middle of a timber shortage and I can’t get hold of 22mm chipboard flooring. So I’m having to improvise with scraps of plywood from the workshop. Bit of a work and chat session today. Enjoy!

You might just need that ice cream van if you run out of spacers ,just go and get some ice lollies and use the sticks!! Cools you down as well 😁
I like your thinking! 👍😁
I would not have believed that I could spend half an hour watching a guy repair a small area of floorboard, shows the power you have over us mere mortals! Thanks.
👍😁
What? No “tatty bye”? I live for the tatty bye at the end of each episode 😀
Oh no! A special "Tatty bye!" now for you 😉. Next time! 😁👍
Thank you!

Some years ago a neighbor was doing the subfloor with bits and pieces in one room, and when I mentioned the gaps and unevenness he told me that the finished flooring would hide all that, and besides, "it's an old house and it's supposed to look that way." Not up to Andy Mac's standard! When you're done it will be better than when it was first built.
@YT_CHL_DOK LOL! I was very tactful when I commented to him. With this particular neighbor, it was such a pleasant surprise that he was doing any work at all on his house I would never have criticized it!
🤣 Ha thank you Bob! Less of a concern with hardwood flooring over the top but you can certainly see any unevenness through carpet, so worth doing. 👍👍😁
So enjoyed your joy of finishing that project! I enjoy how that kind of thing feels too..!
It's annoying with these "covid" shortages. I went to one Wickes that had no concrete at all. Another one 20 mins away had pallets fulls.
I went to a local place for patio blocks and base fines. Instead, I came across a whole warehouse full of cement bags in a bunch of different colors. Where was this when I needed it! Skids and skids packed to the ceiling!
There must have been several hundred skids of cement, mortar, sand. All premium stuff. I wanted to cry.
I haven't seen bags of readymix concrete in Wickes for months. 😢
The reason why cement has been really hard to find is because now that we are sort of back to normality a lot of trades and other people are out doing work or diy so therefore it’s hard to get hold of. It’s also the same story with plasterboard at my branch there seems to be a high demand for 12.5mm and they have raised the prices on the cls studwork which was only about £2-£3 before, it’s now £5!!
@@GosforthHandyman It’s pretty crap because I have been intending to fit a short length of boundary fencing but it’s really hard to find it. The best place to get cement or post crete is from trade merchants like travis Perkins etc, but best to go early as it will be rather busy by noon and before you know it stock will all be gone until the get a delivery :/
@@GosforthHandyman Come to Halesowen, West midlands, they've got plenty lol
Life is full of those little pleasures like a complete floor! Well done. Years ago I had a bathroom floor full of cuts and holes and the vinyl was laid over 3mm ply pinned to the original floor. It worked really well.
Cheers! Yes, makes such a difference! 👍
Totally enjoyable episode, Andy. Nice change from your more structured videos. I’m looking forward to seeing you tackle all the skirting! 💪🏻
Cheers! Skirting vid very soon! 😁
Great work and thanks for sharing this with us take care
Watching this video it gave me a lot of smile, big thumbs to you! Gosforth. 👍👍👍

It’s times like this that are so very existing
For the carpet man is on his way
And that I find positively frightening
The game is a foot and the end is in sight
And your horizons will definitely be brightening
So i will follow you on as you sally a long
Because I find it so very enlightening
Best wishes and kind regards as always 😀👍👍👍
That's wonderful! Thank you very much! 👍😁
Fantastic! Floors are done, a milestone. That house is going to be tip top.

it's like having a functioning kitchen, or a working bathroom. ur doing very nice job.
Cheers Robert!
Not enough lorry drivers to supply the shops since a lot of drivers aren't here anymore, which probably explain shortages of certain building materials.
Plus the queues of lorries at the port waiting for customs checks
How do explain the shortages in US, Canada and Europe?
@@GosforthHandyman Covid definitely didn't help there (and here), but saw some messages appear in the past week that lumber prices are starting to drop again closer to normal levels (not quite there yet) from being insanely high before. From what I understand the lumber mills were the bottleneck as they anticipated demand would drop, while the opposite happened.
That's only lumber though. Haven't seen anything regarding other building materials in US/CA/EU so can't give my two pence on that :D
Was talking to a trucker he said the reason for the shortage is simple. Companies didn't want to pay a decent wage and would rather go with foreign drivers and now the foreign drivers can make more elswhere they have sodded off. Had companies paid a decent wage with decent conditions then there would be no shortage. That's came from a UK based trucker.
Builders merchants aren't reporting driver shortages, huge amount of cement and other materials going to HS2 though.
The guy I served my time with used to clamp the floorboards right up so that there was no gap, wierd to see that some do not
I can see how excited you are Andy..... Great job
Cheers bud! 👍😁
I find your videos so interesting, Andy. As for obtaining timber: I got a worried phone call from my local Travis Perkins as their long decking timber was found to be unfit for purpose (I cleaned that up). They were so pleased when I told them not to worry and that I’d complete the job when it was available as I now take a week to do a days work. It took a while to arrive but the job is now done. 🌞
Glad you got done Ray! Yes, the supply issues are very real and becoming very problematic. 😬
Great video, thanks
Unfortunately because of the driver shortage supplies are difficult to get anywhere. As a long standing traffic planner it's a bloody nightmare. Sorry to all you builders, chppies etc.
Indeed! The driver shortage is just one small part of the problem though. Actual product shortages too due to pingdemic etc. 👍
Lovely quality work Andy. Supply issues are a complete nightmare; we are in Northamptonshire, can’t get anything at the moment. We need to replace some fencing but due to the extortionate cost of wood and the fact that we can’t even get half of what we need we’re making do until things (hopefully) get better.
If you're ever screwing down sub floor again, spax renovation screws... Absolutely great. Split thread helps pull down board, and next thread locks the board down.
Amazing how satisfying even completed small jobs can be!
Oh yes!
Enjoyed it for it’s honesty 👍

You got me there Andy, I instantly thought it was a video about Nightwish when I glanced at the thumbnail!
But seriously, this series has been really interesting. Keep it going.
17:10 I use my impact for drilling and my drill for screwing lol, the impact doesn't impact when drilling, not as noisy and it has more RPM's, just a nice set of Trend snappy bits and you'll fall back in love with your impact :-)
Nice work Andy, must have been very satisfying to do the final clearing and sweep up and strike that major job off the list. BTW - I used to tell my kids that ice cream van chime was an emergency siren as it was racing back to the depot as it was completely out of ice cream.😉👍😀
Nice one about the emergency siren!
I once gave my kids empty cardboard boxes for Christmas and told them that they were Action Man deserters…
Yay! Another tick ✔️ As for shortages, you cannot get 22mm ply anywhere near me at the moment (Central Vic, Aus) and ply that you can buy is double + what it was B.C. Very satisfying job, Andy👏🏼🥳
Cheers! Yup, same sort of flooring issues around here. 22mm chipboard gone.
Report from manufacturing industry states that the shortage is caused by the almost 100% increase in demand with people doing extensions and building work rather than move and cement and wood manufacturers unable to keep up. So they are prioritising big builders and the general construction industry. Next door does footings for garden sheds and offices and orders his up front and has no problem. DIY sheds are way down the list
NOT lack of delivery drivers although that can’t help. But a very nice job there Andy. Strange how finishing the flooring can be so satisfying
Cheers! Yup, also being told from the builders merchants that HS2 are taking a huge amount of cement. Concrete block supply dropped to 1/3 of normal. 😬
You can tell the difference between a handyman/DIYer, and a tradesman or as they say housebasher. Both are time constrained but one is also wage constrained, ie getting the job done and paid for in the quickest time possible. You hear it ringing around Building Colleges all over Britain, 'you've got to balance time and wage'.
I work for a construction company in Australia. It's a right royal pain in the neck getting supplies here too. We ordered most of the stuff we needed months and months in advance so it's not as bad for us as it could have been, but there are still ridiculous delays for all sorts of things.
Got mates over your way and they seem to think they're one lockdown away from things kicking off big style? 😬👍
@@GosforthHandyman It's not fun, that's for sure. And now we have to have permits to go to work, those of us who are in 'essential' work. For everyone else, it's all nope nope nope.
You've probably used them before Andy but the best screws i've used for a finished floor are tongue-tite self counter sinking flooring screws
Hi Andy ☺ nice job mate, it's those fiddly bits that take the longest, and test your patience , but you got there. Here In Yorkshire some materials are in short supply as well, and prices have risen quite a bit, some of it I think is just daylight robbery, I hope you've got enough bits and bobs to finish your house mate, maybe nows the time to buy in what you need before the price goes up, or it dissapears. Thanks for the video, stay safe mate, best wishe's to you and your's, Stuart uk.
Cheers Stuart! Yes, we're stocking up now for everything else. It's a challenge!
Just loved your constant banter and the musical interlude😂🍦🍦🍦. Not 'board' at all! Tatty bye! Have a good week. x
Thank you and tatty bye! 👍😁
We get our timber from Harelaw timber in Annfeild Plain, the same place as Travis Perkins
Will check them out - cheers!

Cheers! Yup ankles a bit safer now!
A job well done. You celebrated by completing a jigsaw puzzle when you got home !

Me thinks Andys a happy boy lol nice one mate.
So nice to have a floor! 🤣
I have a third of a floor that doesn't have any board, just really badly fitted chipboard that'll have to replaced. Looking forward to doing the hall upstairs as that has bumps everywhere. Total cowboys taking shortcuts everywhere.
Good luck! I wish I'd replaced our entire upstairs hall floor as even after remedial repairs the unevenness is showing through the carpet a bit. 🙄👍
Hello Andy great vid as ever, me and our lass are fans of this project. I would have expected you to buy wood from a timber merchant. I stopped buy wood from diy outlet a while ago as the quality was terrible.
I tend to use a builders merchant. Same supply issues across the board though. 👍
@13:58 Join old to new...tell me about it. Owned a house where the 2" x 4"'s were actually a full 2" by 4". Joining new wood to existing wood was fun and creative.
Sounds like fun!
I thought I knew what I was going to see, but your flooring is so different to what I’m used to that it’s all new.
Hope you enjoyed it! 👍
@@GosforthHandyman well, I’m subscribed! Actually, I worked as a designer in the US, before retiring, and now I live abroad and I miss my tradespeople. I spent my entire adult life working with them, and now I watch the tradesmen of UA-cam.
The shortages are a nightmare even for simple jobs. I feel like I found the only bag of readymix concrete in Cornwall earlier - only two two builders merchants, a DIY store, and finally a farm supply place had to be visited for a £5 sack of dust and stones. Kiln dried sand needed next - yeah, that's going to involve Devon. Ugh.
Yup, readymix concrete is pretty much gone up here. Haven't seen it for months! 👍
More videos like this please buddy
Cheers! I wish they were more friendly to the UA-cam algorithm 🤣👍
Seems to be a perfect storm for supplies what with Brexit, COVID as well as the Suez Canal blockage. Was supposed to have a new patio laid 10th of May here we are nearly 5 months later and still no Indian sandstone to be had anywhere. Going to be a whole summer ( well what there was of it) with just what the wife calls our mud hump instead of a lovely new patio.
Yup, as you say perfect storm. Global supply chain issues. Window shortages due to one of the main glass production lines going down. HS2 taking all the cement etc. 😬
Shortages are purely down to lack of lorry drivers, cant be shipped in to the country or from warehouses to stores. This is a by product of Brexit.
It’s a little of both, the main shortage of drivers is down to Brexit, but also Covid is stopping people from being able to train and get Class 1 licences because of a backlog on the testing and training centres.
There’s also a backlog of production that’s getting better, but it’s still behind, mainly because of ‘Just in Time’ management of everything from raw materials to finished goods.
@@almostanengineer Yeah, we've finally found out how fragile our supply chains are - from timber and sheet materials, stone and cement, right up to integrated circuits. Everything falls flat on its face because it's all JIT and nobody who makes decisions has the slightest grasp. Hell, we ran out of egg boxes last year, because someone thought cardboard manufacturing wasn't essential.
@@Monkeh616 I’ll still advocate for JIT, it’s an amazing thing that saves millions of pounds, and tons of wasted energy every year, and the egg box shortage was due to an increased demand for medical products that use the same base material; not a shut down of the production plants that made them, there was also a large salmonella outbreak that meant a large number of lay hens had to be culled to prevent spread, along with an increased demand for eggs because consumers baking more cakes.
@@Monkeh616 it wasn’t the salmonella outbreak that hit the egg suppliers, that hit the butchery supply, but a small H5N8 (bird flu) outbreak that caused issues with egg supply.
@@Monkeh616 the supply chains haven’t been hit by one thing, it’s been a large number of things over the last year, that have caused significant issues all along the chain.
Another example, is the shortage of shipping containers, there’s a ton of imports coming from the Far East, but little in the way of exports, causing large numbers of shipping containers to remain in the western world, and a shortage of available containers in the Far East for exports.
Everything here is in short supply. Looked for handrail replacement and had to get a builder friend get one from contractor supply because Big Box had on backorder 6 months
In Ontario Canada
Interesting! Yup, all building products are impacted over here. Worrying. 😬
Noting comments below and ahead of me. At a suppliers (no names mentioned) I have seen the wall of stocks of cement "held" for HS2... A bit like the so called sugar shortage in the '79s and I know more about that than I can divulge..... Bob
That ice cream truck in the background sounded like something from a horror movie :)
I don't know why it's always greensleeves...
Yup. You should hear the New York Deli sandwich van! 😬😬😢😂
@@GosforthHandyman oh god what does that play? Once the ice cream van decided to park up and have a break just outside our house for half an hour with the jingle playing....my wife had to go yell at him to turn it off, but he did give her a free ice cream and apologise profusely.
@@TheErador New York, New York, psycho killer version. Everyone who works on a business park in the NE will know the one I mean. 😬
Here in Ontario Canada wood prices finally on the downward side. Plywood not so much. Plumbers having trouble getting 3" drain pipe and some versions of Pex. I've been waiting for over 4 months for an acrylic bathtub/shower unit and still no sign of it. I'm renovating a small downstairs bathroom. Gutted and rebuilt but now at a stand still waiting for the tub.
Interesting! Red cedar is now more expensive than gold over here. 🤣😬

Every time I use my drill as a screwdriver I wish to god I used my impact driver.
I do like the impact but it's SO noisy!
How you going to dress those radiator pipes when the skirting goes on?
Got a video coming on that, but they fit behind the skirting. 👍
Hi Andy, did you make your own spacers for under the floorboards?
Yeah - just made my own from ply off-cuts. 👍
I would have cutaway the piece on the viewers right hand side that you held down with big screws to the board in the room, then made a wider piece that could be inclined slightly to accommodate any different levels, but spread the slope over a bigger area.
I had to do similar to this years ago to level up floor put in by an incompetent builder when he got joist levels wrong.
Another great vid Andy. In my neck of the woods, If you believe the local builders, the material costs are up by 30% (if indeed you can get them). I live miles away from you, up in the frozen North! (Whitley Bay) 😁Have you tried Percy's, or NY Timber in North Shields for your timber?
👍 So far the builders merchants I use are OK (ish) but I've seen some with MONTHLY 20-30% increases... and a lot more than that. James Burrell have published their price increases up to October: www.jamesburrell.com/price-increases
Call me Mr cynical, but surely Builders merchants would'nt take advantage of the Covid situation and hike their prices up 🤣
We cheer along. HURRAH!!

Hi, I`ve been wondering what the glue and spray you`ve been using to fix timber together please ?
Superglue (CA - cyanoacrylate), and activator spray.
Yup - also sold as Mitre Bond... same stuff. 👍
I have heard the lack of cement is due to HS2 having first priority over it...
Yup, I've heard that as being the primary factor for the cement shortage. 👍
It's the lack of drivers from what I hear either most have gone back to Europe or they are off because of the "pingdemic" BS. But yes some big projects are ring fencing supplies. Blame Boris
No ‘spares’ under the stairs 😉😉 might have raided 1 or 2 under stair cupboards in the past…
my old landlord would of just filled all that in with concrete haha ,thats DIy landlords for ya
🤣👍
Why didn't you use any glue when putting down floor?
No real need and I might need to get back under it. 👍
I'm not a craftsman myself, but people I know are always complaining that you can hardly get building materials here in northwest Germany (especially wood) at the moment. And when you do find something, it's expensive as hell.
Interesting that Germany is impacted too! Yup, it's a huge global issue and has the potential to cause some very big problems. 😬👍
We are going to insulate our lounge floor at sometime, But i have a question, how is the floor laid out around the fire place, does it just sit on top of the joists or does it go down to floor level ?
Between the joists, supported on battens he screwed in to match the height so it runs flush with the top of the joists.
I think it was in the last video he did this.
@@Steaky78 I was asking because, before we rip up the floor, i wanted to know how the fire place harth is laid out, and if we can lift the harth up and insulate it like the main floor ?

The pandemic has made doing a renovation a right pain! Can't get hold of anything and what you can get has been inflated to crazy prices. I bought a 50m drum of 2.5 T&E yesterday and it's gone up over £10 in the last few months, that's over a 40% price increase! As for floorboards unfortunately I've never been able to find 21mm locally other than salvage and there's only one salvage yard in a 100 mile radius of me so prices are mental, so shimming is the game.
