  • Are you caught in the trap of self-criticism? This lie is holding you back from true progress.
    Next video you should watch: • Mastering Fighting Gam...
    You've been told to keep the grind, but the truth is, that's not what you need to level up. This lie is holding you back from true progress.
    This video dives deep into how constantly hitting the grind and being self-critical is actually a lie that holds you back in fighting games. Everyone says to push harder, but that's not the way to grow. The toxic culture of the FGC, the relentless comparison, and the harsh self-criticism are stopping you from truly feeling good about your progress. If you think that getting stronger will make you feel fulfilled later on, you're wrong. I'll show you why self-compassion, not a war against yourself, is the key to improving at fighting games and feeling satisfied in your journey. You are enough right now, and you don't need to earn the right to feel good about your growth.

    this is something I just talked to my therapist about 😭 I've realized when I win it never feels like an accomplishment but just something my opponent handed to me by making mistakes. I always assumed that voice in my head telling me "you didn't win there by your own skill but just by reacting to opponents fucking up" was a way to show me when I actually improve instead of winning by luck, and its actually still really hard for me to accept that I should feel good about these situations. Its just as a logical person I can't reason my brain to congratulate myself for these wins I wonder if other people feel this way too?

    • @TrickyEileen
      @TrickyEileen  4 місяці тому +23

      Good thing to hear other therapist talked to you about this too. Yeah this vid was totally a therapy talk disguised with anime and fighting game pictures and sounds. I’m also a psychologist so I’m pulling from both the gaming and professional side.
      Good thing is our brains are highly reasonable. We can brute force our way to changing how we think about things.

      @WeMissDimebag 4 місяці тому +12

      I used to feel this way too until I reframed my perspective on competition.
      The player that makes less mistakes usually wins. The one that capitalizes better on their opponent’s mistakes almost always wins.
      ‘I’m just going to make less mistakes and kill them for theirs’ is a legitimate competitive strategy. It’s a core tenant of high level play in any game.
      So I take pride in playing stable, clean, efficient now. It’s what I like to do, how I like to win, and so every time I do it, that’s an accomplishment to be celebrated, if only for a moment or two.

    • @TrickyEileen
      @TrickyEileen  4 місяці тому +10

      @@WeMissDimebag exactly. It's why I'm so foucsed on consistent strategies. Mistakes will happen, bad choices will happen, unlucky does happen. Hoever you can control how much the luck hurts you and you can make your own luck by forcing mistakes in the opponent. The higher level you get the more important this becomes because obvious gaps are less

    Talking about how being hard on yourself poisons any achievement you get is spot on. I'd go so far as to say association and conditioning is THE biggest aspect of self-improvement. If being hard on yourself leads to a positive outcome, you will come to associate that feeling with reward. What happens, though, is you're now conditioned that much more to continue to adopt that mindset because that's what worked for your goal. It eventually saps any happiness you can get because you almost physically can't comprehend a positive mental attitude with accomplishment

Those interactions alone felt better than the win....I understand now the feeling of practice-implemening and its so satisfying.

    Hey, I have been playing fighting games for 8-9 years now, and I started when I was ~20. I'm going through a lot for the lessons that players go through when they are younger, and as an adult player is see the pitfalls for frustration that younger players can fall into(including ones I've fallen into myself). I think what you're doing is really good, and that a lot of people will benefit from your experiences and perspective. Thanks for posting, loving the channel!

  • @megamann013

    This is a lesson I’ve been trying to instill in myself my whole fgc journey. What really got it to set in was shifting my definition of being good at it to mean knowing what I’m doing instead of being better than my opponent. I’m still trash but now I play to test myself and see my progress and it makes realizing I still have things to learn so EXCITING

    This video comes out right now and literally a few hours earlier I was fighting my friend at his house. Every time he complimented me saying I played well I said that “I am not good you just don’t block low” and I could sense that he really tried to drive in the compliment, but I kept deflecting it and chucking it to either luck, or pointing out that he made a mistake and it wasn’t me being “good” that caused it to happen. This video called me on my bs right after it happened to me live. Marvelous video!

    I think the fgc perpetuates this by saying "you dont play the real X until u reach rank y (usually the highest rank with 1% of players) online i feel like i cant share me feeling good about reaching Diamond in sf6 because i know people will laugh at it and say until im high master i aint done nothing yet. As someone with imposter sydrome its very harsh to hear people downplay your achievments, since its hard for myself to feel like ive earned anything. I remember studying for latin, failing my exam and then spend two weeks studying like crazy and managing to pass the exam. I felt like i just had luck, wasnt really my achievment, instead of feeling good about it, i felt ashamed how bad i was before, how could i fail? So many people passed but im obv to dumb to do it. I try my best to see my victories as such but the voice in my head keeps telling me i just had luck or fooled everybody into thinking im x, y, z. Anyway thanks for the vid, it felt carthartic

    • @TrickyEileen
      @TrickyEileen  4 місяці тому +5

      They downplay you because they still feel like imposters. It’s a projection on to you that is spread across the fgc as tough love. When in reality it’s just fear of being a failure. No amount of achievements will rid one of imposter syndrome. You just have to develop self confidence
      Also who cares if it’s luck. I’d rather be consistently lucky 🍀

    Appreciate this video a lot, being kind to yourself is so much harder than it sounds. There's plenty of trash talk to go around without doing mental self harm.
    Unrelated, with the confirmation that a new VF is on the way, I would actually really like to dedicate some time to learning VF5. I have noticed lately that I don't like that games "die," in fact I want to make it a focus of my channel to play lesser known fighting games and try to get people to play them more. We have so many new people in the FGC, which is great, but there are so many under explored classics that really deserve just a little bit of spotlight on them, and I want to encourage new players to be curious about older fighting games. So, since VF is a huge blind spot for me, it's a good opportunity for me to put my money where my mouth is, so to speak. What's the best way to find people to play with and learn from? I went ahead and joined the discord, I'll probably post some version of this message over there as well.

    I think it actually starts with character selection for a lot of people. I think a lot of people follow tier charts or beginner guides to pick a main but Fighters aren't like moba's and I think it's important to enjoy the mechanics/looks/feel of what you're physically doing. Having fun while you're training and having matches changes how you see the grind. I still think it's good to pay attention to what's strong at a "high level" it will be easier to switch when you have a solid foundation.

    I had to save my mom from herself with this mentality a couple months ago. She's a Repiratory Therapist who kind of got screwed out of her job a year or two back and had to retake a license test that became exponentially harder to pass post covid. She failed twice and had to succeed on the third or else she would have to wait another FOUR months before being allowed to take it again. She was so discouraged and hard on herself after those initial failures that she was at risk of losing the third without even going there and giving it another try. When I talked with her about it I put every single ounce of my being into acting cool and confident in front of her and reassured her that she had the capacity to do the thing that she was trying to even if it was clear that she didn't think that she could. I kept on reaffirming and reminding her that it wasn't over yet and that the worst thing she could do was to take that doubt, fear, and frustration, into her third test. She was being too hard on herself and I could see that if she kept it up she would absolutely have flunked. She just barely passed her third test and now she's currently job searching. NEVER let that little bastard of a devil fool you into losing control at the worst moment. In many ways our reactions are involuntary, but we each have the capacity to remind ourselves to keep calm and take deep steady breaths in the heat of the moment.

    There was a really good Polygon video about beginners picking up fighting games and a section about how players should not just see themselves as win rates. Max Dood reacted to it and also added that people shouldn't feel worse when they lose because there is still a benefit to learning in losses, probably even more so. And also how the archaic nature of many fighting games should incentivise their players more instead of zero sum punishing players who are just learning their games and how players today are still hard pressed into thinking it should be this pointless and painful when in reality people just didn't have QoL back in the day that are generally positives now.
    Anyway, this is a FANTASTIC video! As much as I love pro tip videos and the like, having more people talk about the holistic nature of the beast is a much needed thing and highly appreciated 🙏

    It's so interesting to me how fighting game meta talk will often bring in this strong element of self-improvement and things that even sound a bit like mindfulness at times but it totally makes sense as I've gotten deeper into various games. We play the games to feel good, and we feel good when we win, right? Sure, but I think tangible improvements are what are really thrilling, and tying this to our self-worth is obviously dangerous, especially when expectations of how long something should take don't meet reality.
    Also I think the facts that our cultures thrive on stories/narratives/legends with discernible arcs and climaxes, and that our sense of time can be really distorted by our emotions, both help to occlude the simplicity of patient, continual growth day-by-day, while continuing to treat ourselves right and not neglect other areas of our life.
    We all suppress and oppress ourselves in all kinds of stupid ways that we sometimes don't even question, in all areas of our life that we let slide, but I think we start noticing we have to make a change pretty quick when this mentality affects our source of fun. Anyway great talk, sorry for the essay.

    • @TrickyEileen
      @TrickyEileen  4 місяці тому

      Yes the mindfulness stuff and self improvement. I think it has to do with the martial arts. We are martial artists but within the context of video games. So a lot of the philosophy of fighting pops up.
      I have always thought if my fighting style as ‘zen fighter’. Tho I only really activate it when I’m locking in or in a tournament set. Complete utter focus on the present moment.

    Sometimes people say “you shouldn’t care about losing or ranked or even a local or whatever”
    And I think people take that the wrong way, we are competitors we want to win, losing doesn’t feel good and even in something that “doesn’t matter” like ranked it’s still frustrating to lose 3 or 4 games and feel like you’re regressing.
    It’s important to care, the “don’t care about losing” for me isn’t pretending it doesn’t matter it’s understanding my self worth, my skill level isn’t determined by a loss or a bad ranked session or whatever, it’s a moment in time and that’s it.
    The goal should be getting better and improving over a long period for time and not letting bad performances get to you

    This is actually good advice but I have massive ego issues so I felt compelled to grind ranks (and now I'm stuck because I'm playing against every tekken god's pocket Heihashi when I play an alt but that's a different problem), even though it's a flawed system that don't mean much. And as a consequence I can barely find any fun in the game at all except when I play against a friend. It takes extreme self control for me to play with a mindset of improving myself. But if I fail so much as a sidestep and get punished for it, I feel like I suck, I become absolutely toxic and the main reason I don't break my hardware is because I'm too poor to buy it back if I did. My absolute lack of patience makes me my own worst matchup... gotta work on that. Even winning just makes me feel like I got more lucky than the opponent on 50/50's and abusing matchup knowledge.

      @TrickyEileen I think it probably has to do with losing and that feeling of frustration that comes with it , having to feel like shit when I lose. It's not like I can't take a loss but that feeling you get when you are either on a losing streak or just fighting a character that completely stumps you that is what I'm probably afraid of. I tend to be able to get over it but I kinda hate feeling upset in the first place it's as if I'm scrubby for feeling a little salty. I’m not trying to dunk on you at all, this is still good stuff, I just wanted to give some feedback. If this was taken from a live stream with lots of pauses and reactions to chat and whatnot and you wanted to tighten it up into a more cohesive message, I’m not sure about how you would make it feel more smooth other than doing a second take and writing a script based off of the great insights you have. yeah, my locals feel like clouded by this mentality lately. i wish people would try to relax a bit and take rests like you've suggested.
    There's also this mentality that if you lose, it was all 100% your fault, completely removing the fact that there is another person on the other end of that equation. I think ego is what causes us to belittle our opponent and believe that our actions/mistakes are the only thing that stand in the way of winning more matches. Yeah, they play a part, but if you don't respect your opponent, how are you ever going to learn from what they're using against you?
    This self-flagellation also creates animosity amongst players in tight-knit groups (like at locals),. Eventually you even get mad at your friends or talk shit about their characters or playstyle or whatever, making them feel bad or just being a jerk in general, instead of raising each other up. That shit is why the US sucks at big tournaments, because we don't get what it means to build one another up. Everyone is out for themselves and F everyone else.

    • @TrickyEileen
      @TrickyEileen  4 місяці тому +2

      yeah this is the biggest issue we have at the local level. It can suck the joy out of the game. And the people doing this tend to basically have nothing else going on in their lives but the game. So despite being trash level skill wise, they hold on to this strange animosity towards people who aren't wrapping up their self worth with their skill. Paradoxally , the releasing of your ego with your play will make you far stronger. IMO you literally can not get strong with a bad ego. The ego is where strength goes to die.

    • @bigbuddhamech
      @bigbuddhamech 4 місяці тому +1

      @TrickyEileen agree with this 100%, it just gets in the way of improvement and mucks up any attempt at self analysis.
      Overwatch (the first one) was a game that made me so angry. It was frustrating being a tank but because i constantly let my ego get the better of me, making me blame everyone but myself for my failures. I sometimes get to that point playing Tekken, but it's rarer because I spend time trying to work at that ego, and in fighting games, you have no teammates to blame.
