Mike Chioda spent 35 years reffing at WWE and has some pretty incredible stories about paying his dues working for Gorilla Monsoon, traveling with the likes of Rey Mysterio, R Truth, Jack Swagger, and the late Joey Marella, making wine runs for Andre The Giant, being ribbed by Owen Hart and Dynamite Kid, and learning the ropes as a young ref in the business. Mike also shares some of his favorite matches and talent like The Rock, Hulk Hogan, and Eddie Guerrero, and how he basically ended up as Chris Jericho’s personal referee for a while. He’s also talking about his recent release from WWE, the circumstances surrounding it, and what he hopes to do in the not-so-distant future

I actually can't think of a time Mike Chioda wasn't a ref. Heartbreaking.
Mike Chioda for the wwe hall of fame. No matter what we always saw him on our tvs every week doing what he does best. He’s a referee but an absolute legend
I agree 💯%
Pointing out every one who commented liked this according to what i see
Agreed. Feel like he’s the ref every match
all the guys that come to mind are Chioda and the blonde dude lol
Out of anyone who was released Mike Chioda being released was the biggest surprise to me.
They probably released him because he was getting a huge salary after he had been with them for some many years
One of the best ever referees in the wwe along with Earl and Charles
yep same here, mike and ryder firings really hit me
Same
wish he's gonna be in next year's hall of fame
Mike Chioda, "Lil' Naitch" Charles Robinson, Nick Patrick, and Earl Hebner: The Four Horsemen of referees. Man, those were some good memories...
You are right...
Charles' run to the ring, it's one of the most legendary thing I've ever seen. Unforgettable.
Damn, I never thought about that. But you're 100% right
1....2...........my NECK!
Amen to that man
Superb Officials All Round
I can already hear the “Mike Chioda” chants where ever he ends up, hope mike becomes all elite
He's probably done. Vince did give him the job for life. Probably got some sort of pay off.
WWE: Releases a talent
AEW fans: It's free real state.
You got your wish. He just debuted
He was one of the pioneer in this, Along with earl,WWE dropped a big bomb in him....... Charles is still there though!
And yeah PLEASE SIGN HIM TO AEW!!!
Sean Hughes Idk if referees are paid decent enough to be able to just retire like that
Hell no stay away from AEW. Enjoy life.
Mike chioda's voice > WWE
Mike Chioda is my generations Earl Hebner
There from the same generation. Earl had a twin brother Dave Earl was not known by the public till 1988 and Chioda started in 89.
Hard to hear. So many years part of the company, loyal and recovering.
And a damn good referee (holding Becky by her outfit so she can do her move on Charlotte from the outside of the ring without falling, kicking the chair which was too far from another diva (don't remember who) so she can use it like she was supposed to to get out of a submission.
Chioda would actually bring A LOT to AEW. My favorite ref.
He was with the WWE for 31 years so sad to see him go
He will come back when covid19 ends
Riley Holden How do you know that?
@@legend4016 I just know they don't drop loyal people very often
@@rileykazama3145 Really dang
Riley Holden Vince is known to burn bridges of longtime loyal employees such as Jr and make fun of them when all they’ve shown the company is love and hard work.
Was there since 89...his release was the most shocking to me out of all of them. Glad to see his positivity towards the future
He refereed some absolute legendary matches in his time. WWE shouldn't be treating long tenured employees like him like they're an statistic on a list. AEW should hire him in a heartbell with the extensive knowledge and expertise in and out of the ring.
That's the year I was born, sad to see him go 😢
So sad man to be honest them letting him go was the biggest shock for me, more then the wrestlers. I was like “ wtf their letting Mike Chioda go??”
This man is a vet! And hearing Mike was released, it hurt
I remember how huge it was when Hebner signed to tna, it was amazing to see this character from the attitude era and the Montreal Screwjob. This guy has to be the biggest name in refereeing today who is still active. Hopefully when the live audience returns we will see some of these released guys make a splash.
Decades of loyalty fizzled just like that because they wanted to save pennies on their most profitable year ever.
Take note kids: jobs are not family, corporations are not your friends, always do your best job but do it to be proud of yourself because for them you're disposable.
Thats the truth
Agreed bro 👊
Unfortunately that's how publicly traded company's work. Yes it's going to be their most profitable year but stock prices were based off of them even being more profitable so with the loss of revenue from not having shows they needed to make that money up somehow and unfortunately an old referee that has been oft injured that can't work as much as he used to is expendable.
I'm sure if he wants a job he'll be called back once everything gets better but for the time being they needed to get as many non essential employees off their books or else their stock prices could potentially plummet losing them hundreds of millions of dollars.
Amen, I’ve been saying this for 20 yrs. Corporations don’t give a shit about people, it’s all about profits, the minute you can’t make them money they throw you out, regardless of how much money you’ve made them in the past.
Tom Shipley you sound like a commie kinda bro.
Literally anybody who leaves: Chris Jerhico: 😈
AEW CAN HIRE HIM IN THIS PANDEMIC PERIOD. 31 years is a very long run in wrestling business as a referee. 👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻
AEW doesn't need any more referees.
@@davidworks1036 How do you know what AEW doesnt need? Do you work there?
Mike Chioda to AEW pleaaaaase 🙌🏻
Oh he's coming. Anyone who comes from WWE and appears on Talk Is Jericho usually ends up in AEW
He might become a referee coach and not a working referee because of his age and experience to pass on
@@lordkwazz36 it's like he's interviewing them for Tony Khan lol
Would love to see him manage the up and coming refs of that company as well as reuniting with Earl down the road for some high profile matches
Mike is a true HOF Ref & icon! Every live event at the end, he's always taken the time to engage fans in conversation. 🙌🏻
Mike is such a sweet human! I have so many great stories about him. The things hes done for me alone as just a fan. I could never ever thank him enough. I will follow him to whatever federation he goes too. Thank you Chris for this clip.
I hope AEW hires him,He's a good official.
Sad sad day when they released this legend. My all time favourite zebra. Here's hoping he gets picked up by another company soon.
Legend has is for every ref bump you take your voice goes down an octave and nobody took more ref bumps than Mike Chioda.
I can't believe Mike Chioda was let go makes no sense💯 He is one of my Favorite referees in WWE💯
this referee is a legend, how dare they released him
It’s not even that, it’s how they released him...
They really did him dirty.
Welcome to Talk is Jericho
Awesome. Got a great sounding episode of TIJ to listen to when I'm driving :)
I also love shoot interviews with refs cos that perspective is always interesting.
Mike's a great dude he lives in my neighborhood, met him a few times
Refs should be in the hall of fame, and Chioda should be first.
Make sure Mike hired as in AEW Referee 😏
Mike should be the first person to be back if he gets a chance back
What’s Vince’s theme tune?
six months went by and they (wwe) got the bright idea they didn’t need him anymore.
Signing him with aew
Mike has to be AEW
Mike Chioda was always the best referee
I love Mike Chioda! I hope to see him in the Hall of Fame! Whenever I see a match with him, I tell my whole family that that’s Mike Chioda! He revolutionized being a referee!
The Rock was "probably" upset for Mr. Mike Chioda's release cause he refereed most of his matches at Vince's "Mania" pay-per-view! Hope Mr. Mike Chioda joins AEW on TNT! 🔥
He's going to AEW
Can we get Mike into AEW? He is a legend in the business!
".....but how can you have heat when you've been off for 6 months rehabbing..." And there it is
One of the best wwe referees ever!
Greatest pro wrestling referee of the past 30 years in my opinion
Mike was the best referee in history. He was so in character whenever he warns the competitor to back off or telling them to get back in the ring.
Mike was also so well coordinated with the superstar and Alberto, Daniel and Punk vouched for him too.
Hopes he find another brand soon. WWE is just getting too strict.
Bring back Mike chioda
Chris turns 50 this year
Heard it hon, I love Mike! He's such a sweetheart ❤️💜
When Mike sounds Scarier than The undertaker
Great ref, thanks for the memories Mike. I wish you all the best from myself and all the fans. Wwe future Hall of famer
Mike deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. So does Earl Hebner. I'm really irritated that Vince doesn't think that highly of his refs. The refs are not "ring dummies". They have much responsibility and are on the road and away from thier loved ones just as much as the "Superstars". Fans recognize the refs just like they do the wrestlers, especially the refs that have been loyal for so long. It's a shame they don't get more respect and recognition.
The reason Earl Hebner got fired from the WWF is because he was selling bootleg wrestling t-shirts!! - I always hated Earl Hebner and heckled the hell out of him every time he was doing a match!!😆
The best referees were Mike, Jack Doan, Jimmy Korderas, Chad Patton, Timmy White and Teddy Long!!
I met mike last year the day before wrestlemania. Really down to earth dude.
I will remember you Mike, fan from Korea.
Mike Chicoda, Most Memorable Referee!
Chioda’s release hit me harder than everyone else’s at the time.
Now he is All Elite. Great job signing him to AEW.
So happy to see Mike Chioda as All Elite
Mike Chioda was my favorite REFEREE.
Bet you a milliom bucks AEW will take him. Chioda is a legend, for so many years he’s been a top ref!
I want to know what happened to Jack Doan and why he was fired I can never find any information out... I became friends with him over the years hanging out after the matches and talking to him while he broke down the ring when WWE came to Tacoma/ Seattle area every year. Last time I saw Jack was in 2009 and he was sweet and said he would give the letter and a gift I had for Shawn Michaels to him for me.
Mike was my other favorite ref. And was heartbroken when I found out they they fired him!! The only other referee I know is Chad Patton and he is the best! Besides I don't even know the other ones that are there now...
1 of few great refs
could see in in AEW or maybe returning to WWE
He can become rapper with that phenomenal name
Earl Hebner and Mike Chioda are two of the most senior and best officials. They are part some of the biggest matches in WWE history. And this company fires one of the two best workers.
Wow sounds different than I would of imagined. AEW could use a Ref like Mike
I still remember Cena’s rookie year. It was a match with A Train vs Lesnar and Cena was on commentary. “What’s up with Chioda man?” Cena was like he’s out position on a pin. Crazy seeing how well known he was.
Well I'll bet that he will go to AEW are some where Else
I remember when him, hebner, and the rest of the senior officials beat on one ref 😂😂😂
Shawn micheals - Best wrestler in WWE
Jericho - greatest in the world
Jim Ross - Greatest announcer
Mike chioda - Best referee EVER.
Commentator not announcer
Jim is the greatest commentator
Then My greatest announcer is Tony chimel
Jericho is better then ross on commentary. There I said it.

I listen to this on Spotify. This whole interview was great. Mike Chioda does make a point that referee should be inducted.
I know the WWE higher-ups said to Vince mike Chioda just signed a new contract and Vince was like just keep it low-key get it CHIODA 😆
Such a legend! 💪
To think you still put your mind and body out there in the ring still to this day, it’s crazy but hey this is Chris we’re talking about. He is one of the most incredible people on this planet and one of the greatest wrestlers of all time as well, GodSpeed Chris. Look forward to all your future matches, and just as a thought? Is Fozzy coming back anytime soon? That’s all thanks for your time if you see this
He'll be great in AEW along side Aubrey
AEW wouldn't be a place I would go but I still respect his decision we'll probably see him back in a WWE ring in the future.
Miss Mike
Oh my god,it's mike chioda
Oh...and chris Jericho is here too
Ps:I would love to interview you chris
One of the best referee’s WWE has ever had.
His release shocked me more than anyone else on the list
Mike is the GOAT
his released saddened me the most. mikes a legend! he should of at least remained a teacher ...
Fck to worked at wwe for 35 years (since the 80s) and not get promoted to another behind the scene job. Hope to see him leave a mark in aew future
I think WWE dropped the ball on this one
Big time
I met him in 2007 it was a shocker when he did get released
I know mike in real life. He was such a chill guy, and he was a good man as well. Mike should have never been fried, he deserves to be in the hall of fame.
Bring him to the Inner Circle! :-D
Mike Chioda got to witness the entire evolution of the Undertaker's career from start to finish whilst employed by WWE, so unfortunate to see him go
AEW you need to sign Mike. He Is one of the top 3 or 4 referees in wrestling. And he would only get better going to a company where refs can have personalities.
I am just so glad there are other places to go than just WWE
My childhood left with him
What was so shitty about so many of these cuts when they happened besides how many long time employees they cut loose, which was probably the worst thing, was how many people they had just signed new contracts with not long before these cuts who they cut loose. It’s insane to think he signed s new deal, thinks he can plan his future for the next however many years, and then a month later is kicked out on his ass during a time where it was so difficult to find another job in that market environment. Even if they wanted to save money, which they never needed to do, they didn’t even offer people to stay on with reduced pay until things picked back up. Then factor in it became one of their most profitable years ever and how the revenue they were losing in live events accounts for around 10% of their revenues anyways. The icing on the cake for all of it was seeing how the other promotions didn’t fire everyone even when they shut down. Others like Impact and AEW spent the year giving people jobs while the biggest company that had the least need to let people go was the one cutting shit loads of people loose.
Mike was the defination of referee
Hebner, Chioda, and mini Ric Flair are the top 3 referees, no question
The man who never aged
He was doomed... fuck wwe.
He was my best refree since i was childhood.i have been seeing him for a long time.😔😔 hopefully aew does something...
Mike should have never been let go sorry wwe that's bs I remember Mike back in the old days
I hope he gets another opportunity soon 👍
This guy was a ref for my whole child hood
Sorry to year u were let go . U were my favourite reff in wwe
Charles Robinson and Mike chiodoa for the WWE Hall of Fame
I’d gladly pay Mike to train me to be a referee.
@@JudgeNation it's not about the rules it's following the script
If Vince tells you to take a ref bump you gonna do it
Awesome job Chris.
