As you know, the 2D catalog of N64 is not very extensive. In my curation there are games with some 3D elements, but always considering the greater importance of the pixel art. I hope you understand these small exceptions! Enjoy the video
It's nice to see Ogre Battle 64 on this list. Not only is it one of the best-looking games on the N64, but it's also one of the best games on the system in general. That it's so little-known is a shame and many people may be pleasantly surprised to discover the console had such a solid strategy RPG on it. Certainly something unexpected within the Nintendo 64 library.
The Evangelion game on the N64 also used a lot of 2D sprite work. I'm not surprised if you've never heard of that game. It is a Japan exclusive, based on an anime.
A courious thing about Killer Instinct Gold is that the backgrounds are rendered in real time by the console, recreating when necessary the movement seen in the arcade version, where the backgrounds were pre-rendered videos, just like in the first game.
Great video. I always subscribe to the fact if the 32 bit generation would of continued with majority sprite based games, it would of been the greatest generation for video games.
Thank you very much for this video and other videos on this channel, this video proves that the Nintendo 64 should’ve had more 2D games on the System during its initial run.
Does anyone know how capable the N64 actually was at 2D? Could it have run Symphony of the Night or all those arcade fighting games that the Saturn was so great at for example? Or was there some inherent limitation with the hardware that means it couldn't manage 2D games of that quality. It doesn't look like 2D was particularly beyond its capabilities, so I'm just really curious to know what could have been done on it in the 2D space if someone actually wanted to push it to its limits there basically.
I honestly don't remember any of these games having such high res textures, the footage seems like their taken from emulators or something. I can say that they are excellent game choices tho
Mortal Kombat 64 was also the only MK port of its generation that didn't have long loading times, or any in-game interruptions to load animations. Turns out sticking with cartridges did have some benefits.
If Mother 3 stuck with sprites instead of attempting to go 3D, it would’ve easily been on the N64, and rated T for Teen, given how the rating system wasn’t as prevalent as today.
@@LockeTheColeIt’s probably because all the Major n64 devlopers felt they needed to use their SGI tech to the best use when developing games, using pre rendered models rather than having to individually draw each frame pixel by pixel. Also the N64 was during a time when Nintendo and major game devs were obsessed with graphical realism, even if it mean games looking worse.
This list but I think the only game that should've been on this list IMO was Pokemon Puzzle League but in all fairness that is probably my only criticism here, other than that this is solid.
For anyone who wants to play some of these games. Paper mario is available on the Wii u Eshop for 10 dollars. Harvest Moon 64 is available on the Wii u Eshop for 10 dollars. Ogre battle 64 is available on the Wii u Eshop for 10 dollars. Yoshi's Story is available on the Wii u Eshop for 10 dollars. The japanese PS1 version of Puyo Puyo sun is available on the Japanese PS3 Store for 6 to 7 dollars.
That's the proof the N64 was not really cut out for 2D. I mean, none of these games were actually superior to any of the best Saturn or even Neo Geo's 2D games. Even the prettier ones on the N64 suffered from pixelation, washed away resolution and the animations seemed simple with very few sprites. I wonder if the N64 ever had a port of any Street Fighter Alpha, or even Real Bout Fatal Fury or VS Series it would need some RAM memory expansion(and no, not the expansion we've got that was mostly a lie).

Outstanding video thanks my friend 👍
Wish they had a streetfighter!!!

Arguably it still was.

Outstanding as always my friend absolutely brilliant video!!🙂👍
Ogre Battle 64 is an absolute jewel of a game!
and CASTLEVANIA 64 still my dearest title in the whole 64 Era
hey i know you also exist Zelda Ocarina
i know
every time I hear paper mario i just cant stop thinknig about the ''my little maggot'' fiasco
These videos are aweomse and very well made, congratulations for the very good work making them!
I honestly don't remember any of these games having such high res textures, the footage seems like their taken from emulators or something. I can say that they are excellent game choices tho
Bangai-O is an awesome game! Too bad it was never released in the west.
I wish Ogre Battle 64 would be remade
Can you make a list for 2d games on saturn?
Killer Instinct was a beautiful game even on SNES, Wonder Project is the same even the first one on SNES was really well made.
Mortal Kombat 64 was also the only MK port of its generation that didn't have long loading times, or any in-game interruptions to load animations. Turns out sticking with cartridges did have some benefits.
This makes me wonder why there weren't more 2d games on the Nintendo 64. It was apparently very well suited to 2d games!
"Anytime you're ready... Sounds fun... This should be good.. oooh yeah... Oh yeah you like that? Does that feel good? Yeah it feels good"
A couple of new 2D sprite based games are out this year on the N64 (2023).
BIG2SMALL and Xeno Crisis.
Both are available as cartridges.
A couple omissions; Bust-A-Move 99, The New Tetris, ClayFighter 63 1/3, Dr. Mario 64
These ones i never played before thank you for making the list and the video

excellent video
Muchas gracias
4:18 English patch for Nushi Tsuri?
Cool!
Did know the 64 had 2d games
Wait, there were 2D games in the N64? I can't believe i believed there weren't!
5:52 Ahh the Radio Disney Era
I still have the killer kuts soundtrack that was released for killer instinct on 64
i think the definition of "pixel art" is quite nebulous here
Agreed. If it had been best 2d graphics on N64 it would fit, but prerendered 3d and MK games don't fit the definition of pixel art at all.

Tip: please keep the name of the game visible for the entirety of the clip
N64 definitely should have had more side-scrollers.
why is super paper mario for the wii in the thumbnail?
Where is NBA Hangtime? 🧐
Can you make a list of gorgeous games on Gba?
Good idea. I will do the video soon
Paper Mario I love that game
This list but I think the only game that should've been on this list IMO was Pokemon Puzzle League but in all fairness that is probably my only criticism here, other than that this is solid.

Yoshi's Story is available on the Wii u Eshop for 10 dollars.

Didn't know there was a para para game on the N64
Ogre battle 64 looks amazing!!
I didn't even know about some of these games.
Yet the stupid "only 3D games" Nintendo policy for the 64 is proven wrong again
100% right
wow. nice lists. something different
5:27 isometric 3D game
Gamecube 2d games?
These 2D games look way better than their 3D games
Paper Mario was far from 2D. Though it displayed lots of things and characters as sprites, they were projected onto a free, 3D space
Very interesting: N64 was never made for 2D
Where's Kirby 64 The Crystal Shards?
Nice
Mario Kart 64.
👍😃👌
it's too bad the controller was terrible for anything 2d
👍

Nope, the N64 never got a Capcom or SNK fighter
Paper Mario isn't 2D.
