- I want to show you how to make a wooden mallet in three different versions. We will build a standard woodworking mallet, also called a joiners mallet, a weighted head mallet and finally a mallet with a challenge coin embedded in each side. 41:00 this is my favorite part of the whole thing. For fellow believers, we've had these types of things happen to us which are outside the realm of "it's just a coincidence". I honestly got choked up just now.
I'm a soldier in NC, only man working today where I'm at. A few minutes ago I heard the door open up, which confused the heck outta me since nobody should be coming in. It was a coworker of mine and his boy who had decided to leave their family gathering with four plates of Thanksgiving dinner wrapped up to bring in to whoever was working.
Celebrated Thanksgiving in Iraq once in '09. Anyways, before I get to rambling, just wanted to say it means more than I can explain in words when people do genuine acts of kindness and generosity for me just because I serve. Happy you shared this, and to anybody reading this, don't ever let anyone discourage you from sharing those acts with others on social media.
People see it, they get inspired, they see that there's good Americans out there. That's all I want to say. Happy Thanksgiving, y'all 🇺🇲
All the mallet looked great. I think I can speak for most police officer either currently working or retired. We can not thank you enough for your support for our fallen Brothers and Sisters. I'm glad you kept the mistakes in the video. It's a good reminder to always run a scrap piece of wood through before using the high dollar exotics. Measure twice, cut once. It's a lesson we all need to remember right after always remembering safety.

From one brother in blue to another - thank you for honoring our fallen but never forgotten. Also, a tip for the clamping dents- get an old clothes iron, put a small drop of water on the dent then cover with a damp towel. hit the clothe with hot iron....the steam will lift the fibers and the dent will vanish!

Hey Matt, those bb’s also help t alleviate rebound as the mallet strikes; just need to leave a small amount of air space in the cavity, i.e. don’t fill the hole all the way up with bb’s. You can actually buy a mallet with lose weights in it called a DEAD-BLOW hammer. A lot of farmers and truckers use them to beat on hopper bottom trailers to dislodge grain.

Beautiful mallets!! Infinity tools has a fantastic chamfer bit with a brass guide bushing instead of a bearing. Can get into tighter corners if the need ever arises.

I know this is one of your older videos, so you’ve probably heard this tip by now, but I thought the space where the handle goes would be the perfect place to use this tip for removing squeeze out. James King uses a plastic straw to remove squeeze out in corners like that, and it works beautifully!!! Love your videos!
I like what you are doing. I'm wanting a mallet to use around the shop. I live in Texas and will use some of our native wood thanks for the instructions and the inspiration. I'm a disabled veteran and I think what you have done with the coins are great. Brother you have touched my heart. And even as I'm sending this message to you I have tears In my eyes. A straw with one end cut diagonal to a point is excellent for glue in spots like that and on boxes. They are beautiful!!

After getting a Purple Heart and getting retired from the Marine corps I’ve loved Purple Heart wood. It’s a very beautiful wood.
Fix clamp dents without jointing by using a wet paper towel and a regular clothes iron. Put the paper towel over the dent and the iron over the paper towel. It will steam the water and renew the damaged grain and stand it up. Then lightly sand. Fixed!

With the BBs, make the hole a little larger (a third hole in the center would be good) then fill about 80% with the BBs or lead shot (better). Don’t glue it and let the shot slide around and it becomes a dead blow mallet.
The combination of maple and Purple Heart is very pretty. Whoever gets one of these will be very happy with it!
I made one like this a few years ago (Inspired by Steve Ramsey at WWMM). I used maple and mahogany. I weighted it with lead solder (instead of BBs). I use it for beating on everything. It is not as pretty now, but it is useful.

LOVE this video. I have probably watched it or parts of it over a half a dozen times this past week while making my first set of mallets.
I layered my BB’s with glue. Like 3-4 layers of BB’s and glue. I still ended up hearing one or two roll around. I will try starting with a layer of glue first next time.
I got suggestions to use CA glue, but some say it's best if they are loose inside, because that is what creates the dead blow effect
Love the mallets!! Great stuff as usual.
A couple tips that I have seen. I've done one but the other I have seen done. The first is to use a damp rag and an iron to get out the dents in the wood. The steam loosens the fibers and the dent will disappear. The second is to drill a hole at the end of your cut that your wedge will go into. That will keep the wood from splitting in the future.

If you leave the BBs loose in a larger cavity you get a dead blow mallet. They are very useful if you were going to make mallets for use.

Thanks. I just started making mallets, 2 so far. Watched 1/2 your video then went out and cut enough for 2 more. Thought I was cutting oak for outside layers. Got pieces over by light and discovered that they were cherry. On my 1st 2 , I cut thr shoulders on the handles, glued them and pinned center with 3/8 oak dowels. Look ok for an old geezer on his first try. Making more for gifts. I'll be using the contrasting wedge too. Love your videos and t-shirts.

Great mallets and well explained. Concerning the Ambrosia Maple, I’ve been told that it is maple that has been attacked by the Ambrosia Beetle and the fungus that it brings with it causes the color change. The holes are from those beetles. I agree with your 3 degree face angle. Another fine video!

The mallets are beautiful. I have worked with Purpleheart a lot. Love that and Tigerwood look great together. I have made a mallet out of mulberry. Very tough mallet. I have broken a 2x4 with it and left no marks on the mallet.

2 things
1st: you can use table salt(just a pinch) to hold things still while you clamp up your projects if you want to avoid using metal fasteners.
2nd: I found your page on a whim. I was looking info on how to market my woodwork, up pops this bald guy with a shirt that said "IRON" across the top with a couple of numbers below it (27:17). I was lost for a very long time and recently returned home. So in the course of my life I learned to pay attention to the road signs, because when I don't, God seems to make sure they course correct me when I run into them and knock the hair off my head as mild reminder. I guess what I am trying to say is Thank you

Brother Matt! This is so awesome! That Ten Commandments mallet is soooo fitting. We are told repeatedly in the Bible that the law was given to show us that we cannot keep the law as we are imperfect beings and to show us that we need Christ Jesus in order to receive salvation. Just goes to show one more way that God is always in control. I think the imperfect Ten Commandments mallet was God using you brother. Maybe you should make more imperfect Ten Commandments mallets as a testament to Gods covenant to us. He sent His son so that all should not perish....

I really appreciate your love for ambrosia maple. I worked at a custom cabinets shop for a few years in my early twenties. We only used ambrosia maple as paint-grade stock. It was the ugly duckling of the shop, valued only for the straightness and density of it's grain, but I have always loved it's unique look. There is beauty in it's imperfections. Also, it has a very distinct smell when you cut it, kinda sweet and floral.

Matt, as a Police Officer in Washington State, approaching the end of his career and looking for something to do in retirement, I have to say that your channel has more than piqued my interest. Your videos are entertaining and informative, but more importantly, to me at least, is your willingness to express and show your support for Law Enforcement. The men and women that I work with are some of the best people I have every had the privilege of knowing, and they inspire me on a daily basis to be the best person that I can be. Your approach to woodworking shows that even someone like me might be able to keep themselves busy making something that just might put a smile on someone's face. Thanks for the video, your honesty and realism give me the inspiration to attempt new projects. As a beginner woodworker, it's extremely difficult to not get frustrated when mistakes are made. I spent two hours in my shop last week messing with my extremely dated Craftsman Miter saw only to find out it will not cut square. It was extremely frustrating because I kept making adjustments and no matter what I did, it wasn't making square cuts. Thankfully, my Father told me he has been using his Radial Arm saw and hasn't been using his miter saw. So I was fortunate enough to have a giving Father. Keep up the videos and I think I will be trying to make some of my own mallets at some point because of this video!

To find the Center you could have drawn a line corner to corner and you have the Exact center vs doing the math. Keep up the Great work. GOD Bless.
You can use an iron, rag and a smidge of water to get those marks out. You place a few drops on the dent place a rag on it and iron it. It will raise the grain back to it’s original shape. Hope that was a useful tip 😁

Hey brother I just discovered your video's about 5 days ago I really enjoy them ( I think I went through most of your library, because this one has today's date lol) God bless you, they are an inspiration to me. I had a life changing event that has rendered me unable to work. I have been working since I was a little kid because I was always strong in body and soul. Now my body is broken I can't do the things I use to. I 'm grateful to the good Lord to be alive. I'm sure I was dying in the hospital but , the Lord chose to spare my life. At that moment I just prayed, "All I would ask Lord is just give me 24 hrs so I could contact my family and friends". That way they wouldn't wonder why I stopped calling all of a sudden. Worst part of my condition I don't feel productive any more. I try to force my body to heal. I think I can do some of the things you show on your channel. Life is just about starting where the Lord has you. You know start with what you have. Then the Lord will provide the rest. How bout using clear 2 part epoxy, that's like wood putty or caulking for finish work. This is not a "perfect world we live in, therefore how can anything in it be perfect. People like little imperfections, it let's them know a product was made by hand, instead of a machine. Keep up the good work ! BTW, I LIKE THOSE MALLET'S, one day I will make my own and send you one ! I really love the the mixed hardwood look on things I really want to specialize in those products. Take care
