This one had me rolling! 🤣 It was super fun, and I even learned something. I remember when you made the palm one and got all the crap for it. Guess that one worked out ok in spite of all the armchair quarterbacking. Inspired to make my own mallet this time around. Doesn't have to be fancy, just has to be able to whack stuff with. Time to go knock crap off my benches now. Thanks for sharing!
At 7:32 you mentioned “what is this thing...fistules...”.in walnut, you primarily see that in young twigs and branches in the pith. In a lateral (longitudinal) cut you will see that the pith is chambered. Occassionlly these show up in the older xylem (wood) as seen here. It is not a flaw nor disease nor insect damage...just part of the wood.
turned out very neat. whenever I wedge the slot, I drill a hole at the bottom of the slot, which acts as a split stopper. I also do this on the wedged mortise and tenon joints etc
@@griffinmakes yes that's the correct sequence. and make sure you don't drive the wedge below the hole profile because you would still split the table leg or the handle, ...ideally the sharp end of the wedge should end in the middle of that circle. you actually can achieve that by marking the line on the wedge that tells you how deep you can safely drive it in.
Thank you David for showing that I am not the only one who is looking for lumber and it is on the bottom. Then pushing things out of the way like the controllers and lastly having crap fall out of places when the dust collection is turned on. Dude that was awesome.
Your videos are normally pretty light and funny, but for some reason this one hit me differently. I was cracking up a ton with the tiny jokes and editing choices. Love your stuff, love the podcast, and I guess I have to make a mallet this weekend.
I love how irreverent you've gotten over the years, and it shows in the things you're making and the way you are going about making them. There's just so much joy and fun in your process and it really comes through in the videos.
The number of time you seemingly carelessly knocked something over was priceless XD! Also, that clip of sanding at the lathe with the dust clearly being pulled into the collection hose was d*mn near art! All around fun video!
Sand in the place where you live!... bro I got to say I love your new vibe, with the shop and the editing. It’s awesome to see the progression of your creative style. You’re inspiring me to make things.
Great stuff as always. For the mallet with the checks in it you could vacuum press the colored epoxy you are using on the workbench to pull it through the cracks an strengthen it up. Would look pretty sick, especially if you could find some colors that react with the black lights in spaceship mode.
Kudos to you for making more than one of those mallets. I've tried a couple times to do "production work" in my shop and it bores me to tears. My brain keeps yelling "You've done this, you know where it ends up." I mean, I have good intentions, but I'm easily distracted.
I feel like there's always excess sass when it comes to you and drilling. I'm a huge fan. My favorite so far has been "Always start the drill before you start drilling"
Best woodworking channel on UA-cam! Love the content man. Very informative, mixed with he right amount of humor and self deprecation. Keep up the good work sir!
I didn’t know that I was about to watch a comedy show !!!! So good! (That’s what she said). And this music! Can we talk about the music? As always top notch! One of my favorite video in a while. 😍
Not going to lie - I was more interested in that shirt than the mallet! But I love the way the mallet turned out. With he music I almost felt like I was watching a TRON woodworking montage.
Dave: Thank for your mallet lesson! The proper name for that carpenter's protector, according to Wikipedia is: "A goniometer is an instrument that either measures an angle or allows an object to be rotated to a precise angular position. The term goniometry derives from two Greek words, gōnia, meaning angle, and metron, meaning measure.".
I know you said on the podcast it wasn't going to be the most exciting video, but I really liked it (disclaimer: I always do though)! Haha so many little gems in this one - Or flip it off haha
I love the walnut pieces of your grandpa, I’ve got the wrong one I guess 😉. So curious to see what you are going to do with them.. pls come up with a great idea and share 🙏
I Went to kencraft on Saturday mentioned your name. That place is amazing definitely plan on going back down the road with a little bit more money and maybe a truck next time
It most definitely is. My grandpa has a buddy who cuts down trees in his woods and mills it up for friends. Unsteamed walnut has a beautiful color not only in the sapwood but the heart wood as well.
Parabéns pelo vídeo. Você tem uma bandeira do Brasil ao fundo do ateliê. (Congratulations on the video. You have a Brazilian flag at the back of the studio.) 👍🏻
At 4:58 - I JUST bought one of those at Menards last weekend! You're right, it has no name.

Thank you or addressing people who may not have the best resources and showing them another way. Very appreciated!

I'm fucking dying. Such a good joke.
turned out very neat.

ahh, great tip! Thanks!!
I'm guessing the order of operation is drill the hole, then cut the slit?
@@griffinmakes yes that's the correct sequence.

Cool mallet. Basic, simple. Sweet. Thanks, Dave
Thank you!

David with an attitude. I love it.
I love the silliness! So awesome that you don't take yourself too seriously. It all seems fun, which is perfect!
I love how irreverent you've gotten over the years, and it shows in the things you're making and the way you are going about making them. There's just so much joy and fun in your process and it really comes through in the videos.
Thank you so much!!
On first read, I thought you said "irrelevant" and I thought, wow dude, harsh.
Then I realized I suck at reading. lol.
Awww, the fact that your grandpa gave you that walnut is so sweet. I think you should make something grandpaesque with it.
I need to make this! I have been working without one for years and need to make this easy one! Thanks!
I’m loving how organic your videos feel now.
Perfect video with the first cup of coffee, love the way you troll the trollers. Love it!
"Don't get it on your fingers, it WILL kill you". Ha ha! Great stuff, lots of fun. Mr. P is on fire! :)
I literally laughed out loud on that one. And "literally" in the literal sense, not the way the kids are using it these days.
The edit was crazy good this Time!
Really loving the shop makeover, the colors and "space mode" lighting looks great!
The number of time you seemingly carelessly knocked something over was priceless XD! Also, that clip of sanding at the lathe with the dust clearly being pulled into the collection hose was d*mn near art! All around fun video!
Thank you!
1:54 It wasn't as hard as I thought! Excellent!
Now that is how you make a video! Well done!
Sand in the place where you live!... bro I got to say I love your new vibe, with the shop and the editing. It’s awesome to see the progression of your creative style. You’re inspiring me to make things.
I was cracking up at everything falling all over the place. Awesome video!😂

Going for maximum "engagement" by having every type of person correct you. I applaud your efforts, my man. Good job :p
A very nice and healthy looking mallard!

Great mallet. One that will get used.
I feel like there's always excess sass when it comes to you and drilling. I'm a huge fan. My favorite so far has been "Always start the drill before you start drilling"
hehe!!
Another good one, David. You always have so much fun building and don't care how it will turn out. Yet it's always good. Take care.
Bill
I love the fish gills!
Great video! You were right. Might be the best edit ever.
I loved that maple moment
Space ship mode is cool. I like space ship mode.
Everything has a name... I would call it Bob ;)
Love the project almost as much as I love the Beard !!! Thank you
That walnut sap layer stock is awesome!!
Your videos are so well done. The little nuances in very video and the hint of humor are the best. Plus the content of course. All well done.
Always entertaining David..spaceship mode was epic!
you have a lot of whatyamightcallits and thingamabobs there, and even things without a name. nice mallet!
Best woodworking channel on UA-cam! Love the content man. Very informative, mixed with he right amount of humor and self deprecation. Keep up the good work sir!
Still Love those wall colors.
Thanks! They are not quite done. I'm going to be adding some texture to them.
@@MakeSomething nice!
I used your promo on square space. Thank you! You’re the man.
Thank you!!!
Love the color of the shop walls. Kinda looks like a Crayola Color box.
As a fellow 419er you make the best stuff!
I didn’t know that I was about to watch a comedy show !!!! So good! (That’s what she said). And this music! Can we talk about the music? As always top notch! One of my favorite video in a while. 😍
Thank you thank you!
Well now I feel much more confident in making my first mallet for the shop. Great content as always Dave!
Got damn. Pulling out that slab was WAY easy. 🤪🤣
Easier than I thought!
This is a beautiful looking mallet!! Awesome build!
Thank you!!
Not going to lie - I was more interested in that shirt than the mallet! But I love the way the mallet turned out. With he music I almost felt like I was watching a TRON woodworking montage.
I love the energy in this video
Technically Diresta has a jointer big enough for that walnut slab just sayin lol
Anybody with analog [hand] planes can handle those slabs ... Just say'in ... Hehe
I have a 16” made in the 50’s. They don’t make them like they used to lol
I think Matthias does too...and he made his!
He's got a few bandsaws too
If it exists, Jimmy Diresta has it

Love the hat....and the mallet
So many things! Love all the color! New shirt is 🔥. New music! And best of all the video was amazing!
Thanks Jonathan!
Sweet. I can buy this mallet to make my own. Save me the hassle of having to borrow one
Love these quick, one-day builds!
Thanks Bill! Hope you're doing well!
@@MakeSomething Feeling stronger every day! Thanks!
Great work and humor you make every thing look easy but I know it a lot of hard work.
I love the whole Robin Williamsesque stream of consciousness woodworking!
Really enjoyed watching this one. The shop is looking pretty cool with all the colour on the walls. Looking forward to seeing the new workbench top. 👍
I moved watching this for so long, thinking "eh, a mallet."
But that video is so much fun!
Great video Dave!
Thanks Dan!
Dave love the show and the the teen wolf look. 👌🏿
Hooray for Dave!
spaceship mode - yeah boiiiii
Hi Dave, I’m a fan from Australia and it’s so late here but worth it 😂
Get some rest!
Great full ideas and good
Anything but simple!
that is exciting your GP gave you that wood.
You going to make him something with it

Really enjoyed this one David! Humor was off the chains.
David great video this week. It turned out very well. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Keep Making. God Bless.

That's what she said.
The troll trollery on this one is definitely level 11. And, yes, troll trollery is a professional term. Look it up. You'll be cooler if you do. 🆒😎🤷♂️
Adding troll trollery to my vocabulary
Very Nice!!!!!
Dude the new shirt and painted doors on the wood closet look so legit. Loving the color pop game Dave. Also a great video on a simple mallet. 🤙🏽🤙🏽
Very entertaining and informative
Savage woodworking. I love it!
I love your new paint and backgrounds. #shopgoals
Grandpa won't mind the walnut sapwood distraction as long as you "Just Keep Moving".....
thats a great project! super easy.
ADHD win 🏆. The usage of the easily distracted as a bit made this enjoyable to watch for me
Nice hammer, in the wall behind you the flag of Italy 🇮🇹 is missing😊, hello and good job 😉
I dig the engraved logo on the side. It looked deeper than what a laser cuts in the beautyshot though! I thought you had CNC'ed that bad boy.
Thanks! Yeah, this particular piece of walnut is kind of soft so the laser really dug in.
This was almost like a bloopers video. Really great
Just here from some search and i'm subscribing on the destruction humor alone!
“You gotta come up for air”. The humor throughout the video is great!
Rad shirt design :-)
I Went to kencraft on Saturday mentioned your name. That place is amazing definitely plan on going back down the road with a little bit more money and maybe a truck next time
Right on! They are good people. Thanks Randy!
BTW.
The new sound effect "duh" and you not knowing names of things had me dying over here
3 years later I found this video. How cool would an all walnut chessboard be with the sap and Heartwood making up the light and dark squares?
You were in Especially rare form today🤪
Love the mallard
Can you change out fan of it burns out? Wasn’t sure with it all glued. Nice job!
Had no idea Jim Beam made for such a buttery finish. 😉 Imagine what my insides must look like! 🤣
That might be unsteamed walnut. Really cool stuff.
It most definitely is. My grandpa has a buddy who cuts down trees in his woods and mills it up for friends. Unsteamed walnut has a beautiful color not only in the sapwood but the heart wood as well.
Love the vibe of this one! Keep up the great work.
Please tell us you also made this synth track running in the background while you lathed the handel!
I did. 😊
