Me too. Gonna ride with Team Duzor and use the Out Of Staters charter. My first RAGBRAI too. I’ve done 3 cross state rides i Oklahoma and 4 times Katy trail. I’m gonna use my Surly Long Haul Trucker. Going for comfort, and will throw 30’s on for tires. Not packing all my gear on my bike. Will use the shuttle. 30s war handle railroad tracks and any other services that might come along, and may give me enough tired to do the gravel ride one day during the week. Either of your boys will be great. You do not need to get another new bike. I plan on spending the cost of a new bike on food over the course of the week. :-) See you in July!
Thanks for watching and for dropping a comment. Appreciate your input. I’m going to use my training rides (using both bikes) to get dialed in and figure out which works best for me. More to come… See you in July!
Having owned both an Aluminum and a Steel bike, I'd go for the Bridge Club. There's disagreement about whether or not steel deliver's a demonstrably smoother ride than Aluminum, but in my experience, steel IS definitely smoother. I've never owned or ridden a Bridge Club, But I have ridden a Surly LHT on pavement, dirt, and desert single track, and it performed well on all three surfaces. Admittedly, the LHT isn't as spry as my current bike, a Marin Muir Woods (also steel), but given the choices you mention, I'd go with the Bridge Club.
Thank you for the input. Love hearing it. I'm pretty set on the Jamis at this point as I've been doing all my prep rides on it for the last few months. I plan to use my Surly for some bike packing adventures once Ragbrai is completed.
I rode a 40lb Specialized AWOL (Steel) on RAGBRAI one year and a 20lb Specialized Allez Sport (aluminum) a few years later. Both were good. Both were different experiences. You will appreciate the lighter bike on the hills. That being said go with the bike you are most comfortable with.
I’m 61 and just signed up for my first RAGBRAI. I’m a native Iowan, having lived there the first 50 years of my life. Now living in southern Indiana. I also enjoy Bourbon. I’ll be riding my Motobecane Immortal with 2x12 Di2 Ultegra group set.
@@bikesandbeyond618 for my 60th birthday we went to Bardstown. Hit up Heaven Hill as well as others. We also made the drive up to the Buffalo Trace distillery. My daughter is moving to Louisville so I’ll be able to hit up all those haunts. I’m really hoping that Templeton Distillery is at one of the towns during RAGBRAI. I really like Templeton Rye. They are headquartered in Templeton Iowa, although their stuff was originally distilled by MGP in Indiana.
I'd ride the Jamis and maybe put 32 or 34c tires on it. The riding can get tough and exhausting at times. Go for the easiest rolling bike. I'm a 12 year RAGBRAI addict, there's no other bike ride like it. Ps. For charter companies, look at Pork Belly Ventures. They're big and expensive but there's a reason for that, they're the best. See you in Iowa!
Ed, thank you for the input. I truly appreciate you sharing your experience. Looking for a break in the winter weather to get some training rides completed. Maybe some upcoming videos of those. See you in Iowa - looking forward to it!
While I do appreciate the time and effort it must have taken to edit in all the stills and soundbites you may want to consider doing so a bit more sparingly. It has the potential to really chop up and detract from the content rather than enhancing it otherwise. RAGBRAI has always looked like fun. I'd personally go for the more comfortable of the two bikes but others who have actually done it may be able to offer better insight. Good luck and all the best!
The only issue with the edit is that he didn’t keep taking over the b-roll images. A sudden cut to an image with no talking is an interruption. A cut to b-roll while he still keeps taking keeps attention and makes a video less boring.
Jamis, did it for the first time last year at 65. Train well, day 3 and 6 last year were tough even with the recommended 1500 miles in the seat beforehand. Great event, yes I’m already registered for 24!
Absolutely have made the decision to saddle up on the Jamis for this year. I’ll get one Ragbrai under my belt and then start considering some others in upcoming years. Great to hear you are signed up and preparing for this year too. Looking very forward to it!
Greetings, 7 RAGBRAI veteran here ridden all on my 2012 Giant Defy roadie w/25 mm tires! I agree w/the commenters below; ride the Renegade for your first trip. I'd go wider tires if the frame will take them especially if you're thinking about rumbling across gravel day. Get your legs ready to climb, your spirit ready to celebrate and your cameras ready to record a great time. Later, J
Just registered for this ride myself for the first time. Take the Jamis, will be plenty of tire for a comfortable ride and lighter and more efficient for all the hills. (Think this is the hilliest route). I rode across country back in 2015 on 23mm tires, so taking my Canyon Grizl on 34mm tires for this ride will feel like a couch.
Tim, thank you for the input and for watching/dropping a comment. Pretty certain I'll be taking the Jamis at this point. It's lighter and I can ride it faster by a few MPH vs the Bridge Club. I'm alternating bikes on my training rides figuring that riding the heavier Surly will condition me better. See you there!
After seeing the route announced last night and the discussion of the hills and distances on days 4,5, & 6, I think you might be right. Thanks for watching and for sharing your comment.
The Jamis, with a 32-35mm wide road tire. Unless you're going to do all the optional gravel segments.
Thank you for the input and for taking the time to drop a comment.

Awesome stuff Owen! Should be a blast at Ragbrai! Do you have a go to bourbon of choice? I gravitate to the Heaven Hill line up.
@@bikesandbeyond618 I like Buffalo Trace, (Eagle Rare if I can ever find it). I’ve been enjoying the Heaven Hill Bottled in Bond lately.

This is gonna be one of the hardest ragbrai in terms of climbing, so whatever Bike you bring make sure it’s got a good gear ratio
Definitely solid advice! I'm not too proud to appreciate and take advantage of a good granny gear.
@@bikesandbeyond618 my 600x is gonna be a life saver for them hills
Personally I choose the bridge club with beafy smooth tires. Steel seems to eat the vibrations better than aluminum.
Thank you for taking a moment to comment and for watching!
Take gravel with 30mm tires. 7th rsgbrai 67 years old.
thanks for the input. Did you take up riding at 60, or just decide to Ragbrrai and liked it so much you've done it 7 times?
I’d take the renegade
