    *I love Sparrows products, I love Lambda2 custom lockpicks, I did NOT like this set of picks. Perhaps the tension wrench was binding in the keyway due to incorrect positioning, but still, it folded like the Buffalo Bills in the Super Bowl. Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

    I'm more than willing to take full responsibility in admitting that I may have used the turning tool wrong, or incorrectly, and the leverage point for the turning tool in the keyway was incorrect, causing the turning tool to bind, and bend. BUT. I stand by this review, as NONE of my other turning tools in 15 years have ever done this to me. None of them fold under such little turning force, regardless of incorrect placement or not. This pick steel and pick set is garbage and I stand by this review.. However, I have zero doubt that if I were to custom order this set from Lambda2, it would be grade-A quality, and highly functional. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

    I've bought a few tension tools from sparrows and bent all of them at one point or another. I haven't bent any other brands turners. Not even the cheap amazon ones I got when I first started. My fav set by far right now is by Law Lock Tools out of the UK. Angled for a really nice anatomic hold. They come in right hand or left hand sets. Fantastic tension tools. They ship to the US quickly. It took a week to get them from UK. I plan to get one of their comb pic sets soon. It looks to be one of the most comprehensive comb sets I've seen.

    I have had that issue with bok with that American keyway and it was because my tension was too narrow and it just fitted under the bottom warding but it did the same, a free spin however my tensioner didn't bend at all it just free spun. Great comprehensive review once again mate, well done, cheers

    It seems, some pick sales companies sell some pics as a gimmick and not for full functionality. I think the second or third set I ever bought was a Sparrows. They came with dipped Handel's. I must admit the first and only pick I ever broke was from that set. Although I love the monkeys Paw! I'm pretty sure it's a Lock Noob design.

    • @sandman_locksport
      @sandman_locksport  11 місяців тому +2

      Well the monkey paw was first seen in The Picking Book by Jerry Levine in 1988. Lots of people definitely claim to have influenced it or invented it, but I know the real story.

    I find this kinda funny, literally did the exact same thing with the turner lol. Got the lock open and only thing that turned was the tensioner. Do like the weird profile pick (broke my main so its now a bypass tool) but man the wrench is such a killer.

    On those pics I probably wouldn’t do it, but any of the sparrows picks I get that don’t have handles I use marine grade shrink wrap for handles that seems to work. I’m sure everybody has seen that trick but I definitely like it.

      That is very good advice and I 100% agree. I just feel that handle less picks are lazy and they should come with handles unless there was some specific need for them to be handle less. Thank you for watching!

      It is really sad that Sparrows did not bother to offer the Tux set with a handle option. I will have to re-buy the kit as single picks with handles. By contrast Jimy Longs cost Americans just as much as Sparrows does for Canadians but the Long's have handles. With shipping and exchange rate, my Jimy Longs came to $8 CND a pick. I would pay that to Sparrows if they had a deluxe handle, but I'll settle for their dipped handles.

      4 picks are jimy longs gem hooks .023", .019", peterson gem hook .015", peterson short hook 1 .015", 3 rakes are any 3 of Christina palmer rakes from sparrows or peterson, 3 tension tools are covert instruments double ended tension set of 3 turning tools, two bypass tools, j-hook thumb turning tool, sparrows under the door tool, but your probably expecting 2 bypass tools that fit in a case, so peterson or covert instruments knife tool, and peterson or covert instruments shim/feeler tool. i dont bypass much these days so that's dealers choice. Thanks for the review. I am a Sparrows fan boy but won't be buying this set. Sparrows need at least shrink wrap if not their own handles; these are not suitable without a handle. One thing I did buy from them that was garbage was their St. Chaos. While I am a fan of OSS/SOE thumb dagger, the St. Chaos comes with a guard that can't be sewn into clothing but the worst offense is that the guard doesn't stay on the dagger at all!

  • @alpama37

    I don't really like the profiles, and the handle-less design makes them too uncomfortable for me. But they've fixed the profiles in this which I really like (probably because they're Lambda 2's pick profiles). But this is 36 dollars for.. not great picks and a single tensioner. I mean come on. And the tensioner is not good, at all.
    Edit for further information: Sparrows claims to use "301 COLD MAX" stainless at 280,000 PSI max tensile strength, which would match up against high yield, but they definitely don't use high yield steel. It's a full hard of some kind that's stronger than southord as I said in your previous review.

    • @sandman_locksport
      @sandman_locksport  Рік тому +1

      Thank you for the information. I keep forgetting that word “Cold Max” because it’s not a real word or term used in metallurgy or in pick making. Not a single pick manufacturer that I have talked to could explain to me what that meant. However, when I reached out to sparrows, they told me they use “a special 301 stainless steel”. I appreciate you correcting me on this. I’ll try to remember that the sparrows 301 cold Max is just 301 full hard in the future. I agree, it’s definitely not worth $36. Lol. Thanks for watching!
      Edit: also, there is no such term as Max tensile strength. There is only yield strength and ultimate tensile strength. So that’s another term that sparrows has made up. .

    • @alpama37
      @alpama37 Рік тому +2

      @@sandman_locksport Haha and thank you for that. Yeah, I'm doing a current writeup of pick makers and their steels to try and find best practice in pickmaking and recommendations, and sparrows just keeps rubbing the wrong way with their phrasing. Every brand seems to actually tell you straight out (other than Peterson "government"... come on.) I could see their steel being stronger than SouthOrd's reported 190k UTS. My monkey paw has not bent since I bought it in early 2022 and I used that thing quite often that year. But then I also have a short hook that's got a noticeable deflection from using it on day one. So which is it Sparrows. It's just disappointing that probably the most well known entry tool company makes subpar tools and take "advice" from professional pickmakers to make subpar stuff.

    • @sandman_locksport
      @sandman_locksport  Рік тому +1

      @@alpama37 we’ll said. Let me know what you find out when you’re ready to go public with that list. I would be interested to see it. I bought some Japanese files for testing hardness on the HRC scale but I’m having trouble correlating it into tensile strength since hardness and strength are two completely different areas. I would love to find a way to test some of these pick steels someday. It wouldn’t make sense to incorporate the HRC into my reviews at this point since there’s no correlation.

  • @jonholistik

    My question is why sparrows switched steels for these picks or if its just a flaw in the design amd quality control....normally sparrows steel has always seemed sturdy to me however i never felt the need toget this set as i just personally didnt like the profiles...if they did switch steel for this im hoping it isnt going to be a common place moving forward

    • @sandman_locksport
      @sandman_locksport  11 місяців тому +1

      Who knows. I’m now under the impression that pick manufactures don’t say the type of pick steel so they can use whatever they want in a pinch. There’s just no reason for obfuscating the facts of the steel used in a tool, unless it’s to hide something.

    • @PocketWomen
      @PocketWomen 11 місяців тому

      I think they went to a cheaper steel on these picks because of the amount of material that is in them. You could make two small sparrows picks with this amount of steel. I also think that during the supply issues for the pandemic sparrows has made some dodgy bulk purchases of material and things and is putting it into their novelty items, like the new monkeys paw that with its second run has shown to be faulty in the design and steel. But when it was first released there were none of these issues.

    Those picks just look like cheap pieces of sh!t. It’s a gimmick. It’s a novelty gimmick, and to be honest, it disappointed me that Sparrows would release this to the public. You cannot tell me that the good people at Sparrows honestly thought that those are a quality product. You can’t! It’s sh!t like this that makes me question their other products. The Sparrows few picks that I have I like, but do I want to go back to them and buy more, I don’t know. I think that I’d be disappointed in myself, like I’m dirty. Like, I need a shower for what I have done and I hope no one finds out. Anyway, another great video bud. Keep it up! 🤘🏻😎
