First of all, i would like to say, thank you for being honest 👍 This is one of the most in-depth and informative product reviews i have seen. Thank you for sharing this my friend 🙂👌
Thank you very much for watching and thank you for the kind words. I have a lot to learn and I make mistakes. But I’m doing my best to just enjoy the process and be honest and talk about things as I remember them. Thanks again.
Great video. I don't use Peterson pick do suffer qc issues. I have every multipick pick and dimple sets. The Peterson picks are too pricey and i don't think they are worth the price. The Peterson case is a poor copy of the multipick multipicks QC istop notch. Your honesty is much appreciated
This is funny as hell...my God I will have to starting making videos. Oh Jesus, damn near everything you said can also be said about Bill. Hell Bill refered to Southord as cheap pot metal until he got paid then starts pimping for them. Oh God this funny. Take your videos down!!! Keep rocking man.
Shots Fired. Lololol. That guy (Ken) is something else. Boy o boy. I met him at I think ALOA? The first set I purchased from him was a MONSTER. Cost me $500USD. It had I think 5 of those wires. I could only get 1 to work. Moving on. Lolol. Thanks for watching!
To be honest ive watched many of your videos and this is by far your best.the amount of authenticity that you brought to disecting the tools and practices of peterson as a whole while still driving home the point that the views expressed are your own is absolutely flawless. Keep up the good work man
Thank you for your honesty. I have also crossed paths with Ken. NOT impressed! Thank you for your service! I am also a combat vet. Keep up the good work brother!!
We all have to give up on our memories of "the best" when they are no longer "the best". Every company out there has its strengths and weaknesses and usually, you have to resort to more than one company to get everything you want. Buy what you like, keep having fun, and above all, keep being "genuous". We love it.
This was a spot on description in my opinion. He has some great designs, but the attitude and tone he puts forward is like a dark cloud on the company. Thanks for taking the time to make the videos I enjoyed it.
Dude, I couldn't have said this better! I love the tools but hate the drama. I remember reading this on his site and thinking "I would hate to have to work for/with this guy" but that being said the gem is a great pick and I remember finally buying a bunch of picks from them to build my dream set. Thanks for the honesty!
This is one of your best reviews. Keep putting the videos out, and thanks for shedding light on the peterson lock pick taboo... as a new member of the lockpicking community I had heard some talk about Ken but never really bothered [ or cared] to ask why. Thanks for breaking it down Barney Style and reviewing the tools as is.
It is probably the first time i watch a review of this type from start to end without skip forward in the video to the part im interested in, i was focused on the video all the way down, best review ever seen, very honest! Thanks for sharing pal!
You saying "get bent" every so often at the beginning when you review the turning tools was very funny to me as the six-piece wiper insert set is called "I LIKE BENT", so maybe Ken is into that. But this is an excellent and fair review that states the good and the bad. I agree, Peterson tools have some of the best profiles on the market. Unfortunately, the cost prohibitive nature of his tools mean that they are not at all value-friendly nor are they justifiable when the flat rate shipping to other countries is some insane 25+ USD. I love Peterson handles. I love the hook 7 and the gem design. But they are not for me because, despite being a "Big Tim" in most all senses that you've put into the term, I cannot justify spending that sort of money for tools when similar shaping offerings exist but are made to a much higher standard (eg Jimy or Moki).
I wholeheartedly agree, and I can’t imagine what it’s like spending even more money on the shipping overseas. Jimy Longs and Moki are my top 2 favorites now as well. Thanks for watching and thank you so much for commenting!
A very interesting video. Watched the whole thing. A very fair reflection of Petersons products, service and practice and a video that will ruffle some feathers I'm sure. Quite rightly too. I've had very limited experience with their products. I bought a few of their picks, didn't like them, found they deformed very easily, and I then moved on to other manufacturers. For a company with a good foothold in the market, it has always astounded me that they seem not to care for their customers, from what I hear, when it comes to quality control. Great review 😎👍🏻
Thank you for watching! I'm doing my best to keep it fun, but also keep it real. All of my bubble gum reviews are really just products I geek out on. I love them too.
LOTS of clarity found in this video that I very much appreciate. Hope to see many more videos with the same honesty and intensity that quantifies and proves it for once. You can't always be nice when your always being honest.
I'm pretty deep in collecting edc knives and know quite a bit about metallurgy, production processes, and ACTUAL PRICES TO MAKE these metal products. I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that when u said it was speculation that there's a 900% PLUS markup on his products...IT'S ABSOLUTELY TRUE. 💯 Those picks are easily $1 to mass produce. 420, 301, those metal prices have gone down. The knife industry has opened the door to some extremely groundbreaking types of metal that are on the forefront now of tool steels. So, yea, ur right on with that analysis! *Ken reminds me of a guy named Greg Medford in the knife community who can't help but acting like a (in his case, bigoted, racist) child. Give a person a lil power (running a company) and their true self will easily come out!
Glad to hear the speculation of pick making costs is similar everywhere else. Let me ask you, what are your thoughts on buck knives and their steel? I like them and I like that they arnt hard to collect. I want to invest in a custom Bowie from them at some point. Also considering cold steel bowies in V3 but I know nothing about steel.
@sandman_locksport I mean, Buck makes the iconic 110. An all around great budget knife (I believe 420 in 59 hrc (?) which is extremely bleh..but..) for the price u can't beat. Definitely not something I'd hang my hat on tho with all the other much better options. As far as steel, I'd go with either Magnacut at 63-64hrc or anything in Cruwear u can't miss. Buck knives are kinda like that super cheap pick u always stock up on but it's not the gem of any collection lol.
Someone once told me, "Never meet your heroes," and I never understood it till I met mine. The whole interaction so let me down. I'm happy to watch such a fantastic review for picks I'll never afford, lol. Thabk you for the review.
I recommend picks to hundreds of pickers given my position in the locksport community. I used to recommend Peterson every time, however for a long time now, I could not in good conscience recommend them anymore due to worries that buyers will encounter QC issues, or even worse, get a nasty email from Ken. Thankfully, Moki and Jimy Longs came along and provide a better product that I can (and have hundreds of times already) recommend to new and veteran pickers around the world. Thanks for the review video, watched the whole thing through!
Thanks Norlin! I have been watching your videos for a very long time! Your the best! I agree, it is hard to push our friends towards a product that once was awesome, but now is filled with QC issues and hate and discontent from the owner of the company. I will forever suggest Jimy Longs and Moki, and Law Lock Tools, Bare Bones, and more from now on over Peterson Manufacturing. Thanks for taking the time to watch my video. Take care!
On his webpage for the shrike picks (at least originally) he very clearly stated they were copies of sparrows but with his improvements to their flawed designs. The whole thing is a joke but I can’t say I didn’t buy half a dozen of those Peterson/sparrows shirts when they went on sale for like $2 a pop lol. Also brother I wouldn’t worry about negative comments in reaction to your opinions. Your integrity shines through as always. I think you highlighted public issues the company has had without pulling out any of the racist, mean, or vindictive things Ken has done to members of the community personally. Ken has made it clear in the past he doesn’t want hobbyists as customers. I think his legacy may fall on that self imposed hill.
Great review. I'd spotted the Bosnian Bill/LPL page on Ken's site and thought about how juvenile it was, and have limited my business with the company to only the few things I can't get elsewhere like the gem picks.
I'm the same on those Gem picks. Ive been using Jimy Longs in .019 and .023. but man, i need someone to make a gem in .015". Bare Bones has one in .016" and i love it, I just havnt made the transition completely.
Sandman, this was an excellent review. Thanks for taking the time to share your expertise and experience with us. I still remember falling in love with Peterson picks and then beginning to hear the horror stories. I’ve luckily never had issues myself but too many others have. I’m looking forward to your upcoming video on those lifter picks, as I’ve never seen those in action before.
Dude I appreciate Your honesty. I also see the delema of rating them, given Peterson's history. Excellent video 😎👍 I'm praying none of mine break as I cannot afford replacements...😅
I like to support small business that appreciate their customers, that works hard to provide a quality product such as Jimy Longs. I bought a couple Jimy Longs sets on your recommendation and was extremely happy that I did. I will not be bothering Ken with my money; I don't think he would appreciate it. Please keep the reviews and background information coming.
Southord may have less crazy profiles, but they are great tools and are very affordable. They always come packaged well. The only order I've ordered from Peterson, they just came loose, free floating in a huge bubble mailer.
Bosnian Bill and Lock Picking Lawyer hooked me on Lock Sport. I have watched hundreds of their videos. I was sad to see Bosnian Bill retire. However, his loyalty to his friend a stepping up to the life changing events sure indicates to me what a fine man his is. I also watch Lock Noob and was pleased to find your channel not long ago. Due to your reviews, I have made some purchases of a few products. Lock picking is something I enjoy while watching UA-cam. Thanks for your contribution to the community.
Hello Sandman, I don’t know how I’m just now finding out about you and your channel but I am, as of tonight, a new subscriber and a fan. I loved the review. I’m glad to now know more about the owner of Peterson and his immature and unprofessional ways. I also wish his pick handles weren’t so short, but that’s just me. Anyway, great video, I look forward to seeing more from you.🤘🏻😎
Thank you sir for the kind compliments. I agree, the handles are to short, especially compared to Jimy and Moki and Law Lock Tools. But to his credit, they were the biggest on the market 20 years ago. Thanks for subscribing!
LOL Buddy, I have no doubt Reddit is having a melt-down over this. That's why I watch these videos to finally hear someone say the truth and not sell me on whatever product they are reviewing. I also have no doubt that I'll be getting some of the picks because I don't have any yet and what is a collection without one of the main players. If they are shit quality I'll call them and get it fixed, if they are great I'll be happy and use them like my other picks. Great job and thanks again!!
Thank you for watching and thank you for the kind words. It is definitely an unusual dichotomy, but I still use them and I still collect them. I think once Jimy Longs starts selling turning tools, nobody will even remember this company.
Good information and comments. Thank you. I, too, have mixed feelings about Peterson and have not had any interaction with Ken. Compared to Multipick, Jimy Longs, Moki (yes, I bought some based on your recommendation), and others, Peterson products are expensive. Keep up the good work.
The note from 33:00 to 40:00 is the exact reason I hesitate to ever purchase from Peterson. I saw it on the website when I was adding items to my cart and it was so cringe that I couldn't bring myself to spend the money. Here's a piece of advice I was once told: "People will remember you more for the way you made them feel then for the words you said." I would sooner purchase a "lower quality" tool from someone who makes me feel good than a slightly 'higher quality' tool from someone who makes me feel like trash for giving them money.
New to Channel and subscribed Very glad to have come across this video Having started my channel 5 years ago,my experience with "Ken" (not what I called him in few phone conversations) was brutal to say the least and will leave it at that lol He banned me from purchasing his tools because I voiced my opinion on the need for his picks to have more "Meat" (All plastic and very little metal to support, hence easily twisting and breaking) Thanks for SHARING
Lol 😆 When I try to purchase I get a message saying he will not fulfill order A real clown 🤡 🤣 I could easily purchase under someone else but why bother. Thanks for responding Stop by any time Stay well 🙏
Love the stories and the history of the Shrike set and the collectors edition case. Ken gotta be super spiteful lol. I hope JimyLong Comes up with more profiles so I can stay away from Peterson Lockpicks.
I support the company for the sake of the employees and for the decent quality of tools. But yeah i've read and heard through the grapevine similar stories. Interestingly I've done business with similar owners in other industries. The former owner, now retired, of a corvette performance parts maker that I was local to. Honestly he could often be a real jerk. But he made good products, had good employees, and honestly he was a pretty reasonable and fair guy when it came to his business, company, and products. But man he'd talk trash.
Peterson's Shrike Picks are his knockoffs of Sparrows Monstrum Picks. Ken, for some bizzare reason, thinks the Monstrum Picks are knockoffs of his Picks. Here's the extract from his email drop sent out this year. "There is some background to the designs and the names of the picks. If you closely examined the designs another manufacturer came op with, they were extremely close to my designs. Frankly that annoyed me. Go figure! The design differences were minor, but were poorly done in my opinion as they weakened the picks. They were also made from a different steel, that after a long search I only found in China. So I repaired the designs and made them from Gov Steel instead because I don't make my picks in china - only in the USA! So then I needed to name them. Back in WWII there was a German fighter plane named the Shrike. Further investigation yielded that the name related to a bird (also known as the butcher bird). The reason it was known that way was because it would capture it's prey and impale them on a thorn tree or other thorn bushes. BUT THE BEST PART WAS THEIR PREY WAS SMALL LIZARDS AND SPARROWS! That sold me on the name! These picks (as redesigned) are very good. Of course they are as they are basically my designs!" (Ken Peterson, 2023).
Yup! Also, his _Shrike_ rake is a copy of Wizwazzle's _Worm_ _Rake,_ a design he made and later had manufactured by _Sparrows._ My above comment describes my disdain for Ken and why I, too, am finished with _Peterson._ It's _JimyLongs_ for me now!
Irony of the sparrows case is what happens when an eagle actually Flys into sparrow territory in real life... about 20 sparrows appear out of nowhere and divebomb the shit out of the eagle till it runs off, lolol...
That’s hilarious, I didn’t know that! Thank you so much for taking the time to watch it. I’m trying not to make my video so long, but sometimes I just go on a rant.
I admit i bought a phoenix set and some bits because they feel, in a good way, like part of locksport history. I liked some profiles, but most haven't made it into my daily pick set. And its difficult for me to justify the rubberized handles as i mostly use 0.5mm/19 thousandth picks. Was never really sure what went on with Bosnian Bills review of the Mayor set, it was...out of the blue. Thanks for the review and the video!
Peterson Picks are the most expensive picks on the market at $9 and $16 per tool, please tell me who these “others” are that are more expensive, I’ll wait. They bend and break often as they are an inferior tool steel compared to 301 HY.
@@sandman_locksport Sorry for giving my opinion... I've used southord, sparrows and peterson. Why are you being so intense? You've given great reviews for these picks and others.
@@sandman_locksport You'll never be offensive to me. I replied to a video of a person I watched and opinion that was respected. Not sure why you're being so confrontational right now.
...and here I was hearing people say Covert Instruments tools were overpriced. The Arbiter Bypass Kit is three bucks cheaper than the DAMEs, comes with more (and probably better) stuff, and includes a case that doesn't feature whatever unhinged nonsense that embroidery was! Looks like Peterson is a lock pick company that I will be avoiding for sure.
Yeah Peterson will be going away eventually. The owner is in his 70s. He’s been trying to sell the company for 10 years. Nobody wants to buy it because he’s greedy. I wouldn’t be surprised if Covert Instruments puts him out of business.
I didn't fully understand two things. Are the deep cut picks just regular picks with a shorter handle? And why are lifter picks so important since they seem just like every other deep hook on the market (or a gem, they are really similar)?
The deep cut access pick, have a lower shank. Same size handle, same profile, and same length overall, just not as much girth in the shank, which is desired for highly paracentric keyways and not over setting pins by accident. The Peterson lifter pick is essentially a monkey paw, it has a groove in the tip of it that grabs a pin.
@@sandman_locksport Ah that makes sense, I was thinking about filing one of my hooks to make a groove and didn't know that such a thing already existed, thanks for the explanation
@@sandman_locksport ok hahaha I was just curious cuz you had said there were some of your favorite picks haha there's a lot of crazy info about Peterson. I had no idea
@@thatlockpickguy tier one lockpicks are anything 301 High Yield like Jimy Longs, Moki, Bare Bones, Law Lock Tools, and then there are Tier one lock picks that are 420 Stainless Steel, those are Multipick and Peterson. I subjectively rank peterson in my top 2 because I have used them for 15 years. I objectively rank them in the bottom of top 5 because of quality control issues and 400 series stainless can bend and warp, whereas I have never bent a 401 high yield pick to date. Its a good pick set, and a good steel, but Jimy Longs is better and I can prove it with science lol. But beyond that, its subjective.
Honestly the quality control issues alone are enough to turn me off ever buying a Peterson tool. When im spending 10 dollars for what is essentially just a bent piece of metal and it isnt even bent right thats just a slap in the face
I was very curious about and planned to try Petersons in the near future, because of Bill. I dont know if i heard him ”sell” Peterson but i’ve watched him pick hundreds of locks and choosing to do so with Petersons tools. After reading those ”war-letters” Sandman show in this video from Petersons webpage where he either attacks others or defending himself in a very upnosed and dumb way, i’m not that excited anymore. I’ll settle with my Multipicks and my Mokis for now. Peterson ”They call me bad, hey everyone!!! Look at Bill (❤️) he’s superduper bad!! Look at him everybody!!!” Like a spoiled child 🤢🤮🥴🤮. He should be ashamed putting crap like that on his website. Imagine MP doing that. To be edgy and salty is fine when you're doing it in a charmy or funny way. This is just dirt and lack of honour. Bill has drawn thousands of people to the community. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yeah, when they had a falling out, Bill did it giveaway and giveaway every single Peterson tool that he had in his collection. He started using sparrows and multipick after that.
@sandman_locksport , gg for the autneticity... I also like their products but Ken, well... CI is such a better value ! Just to kniw, i can't find it so have you deleted your "remastered review of the genesis set " ? Please :)

Thank you for watching and thank you for the kind words! I'm probably done collecting peterson too. Jimy Longs for life!
Southord may have less crazy profiles, but they are great tools and are very affordable. They always come packaged well. The only order I've ordered from Peterson, they just came loose, free floating in a huge bubble mailer.
I’ll be reviewing southord in the coming weeks
Bosnian Bill and Lock Picking Lawyer hooked me on Lock Sport. I have watched hundreds of their videos.
I was sad to see Bosnian Bill retire. However, his loyalty to his friend a stepping up to the life changing events sure indicates to me what a fine man his is.
I also watch Lock Noob and was pleased to find your channel not long ago.
Due to your reviews, I have made some purchases of a few products. Lock picking is something I enjoy while watching UA-cam.
Thanks for your contribution to the community.
Thanks for watching. I don’t always get it right but I do always try to be honest in my opinion and experience.
Ditto!
Thanks for sharing your collection
Thanks for watching!
Great video about a terrible man's Company!
Thank you! That’s exactly what it is. Lol.
Really enjoy your honesty 👏
Thanks, Brother! I’m not always right, but I am very authentic and I truly enjoy this hobby, and it is a passion of mine
Good information and comments. Thank you. I, too, have mixed feelings about Peterson and have not had any interaction with Ken. Compared to Multipick, Jimy Longs, Moki (yes, I bought some based on your recommendation), and others, Peterson products are expensive. Keep up the good work.
Thanks brother! Thanks for watching and keep up the great work with your articles.
I 100% agree.
Law Lock Tools, Convert Instruments, Sparrows... And if I want to finish my own picks, Bare Bones. All day long.
Great review, brutally honest and I love it
Thanks for watching!
Always be honest. Thank you. Love the content.
Thanks for watching!
New to Channel and subscribed
Very glad to have come across this video
Having started my channel 5 years ago,my experience with "Ken" (not what I called him in few phone conversations) was brutal to say the least and will leave it at that lol
He banned me from purchasing his tools because I voiced my opinion on the need for his picks to have more "Meat" (All plastic and very little metal to support, hence easily twisting and breaking)
Thanks for SHARING
Thanks for watching! How did he ban you from purchasing?
Lol 😆
When I try to purchase I get a message saying he will not fulfill order
A real clown 🤡 🤣
I could easily purchase under someone else but why bother.
Thanks for responding
Stop by any time
Stay well 🙏
Ken threatened to ban me as well. No worries, though; I have stopped ordering from them anyway. They can all bite me as far as I'm concerned.
Thanks for your insight on Peterson picks i myself dont like how they feel and dont think they are worth the price
Thank you for watching! What picks do you enjoy using the most, as it pertains to handles and feel?
At this time i use Sparrows
Love the stories and the history of the Shrike set and the collectors edition case. Ken gotta be super spiteful lol. I hope JimyLong Comes up with more profiles so I can stay away from Peterson Lockpicks.
He will, Jimy is getting some shop upgrades this year and will be able to produce more next year
Very nice!@@sandman_locksport
Peterson does have some QC issues but i have never had pick bending issues such as the sub par quality sparrows has produced for the last few years.
I love your reviews! They are real en honest!
Thank you for watching! And thank you for the kind words.
Good review. Also one of my favorite picks.
Thank you, I have this information as well, and it will be provided in my upcoming video of that shrike pick set. I appreciate the comment!
Thank you for watching!
Love peterson picks and have yet to break one. Feedback is great, and the cost isn't horrible compared to others.
@@TW-lm3mq I’m being factual and I have offended you in the process?
@@sandman_locksport You'll never be offensive to me. I replied to a video of a person I watched and opinion that was respected. Not sure why you're being so confrontational right now.
@@TW-lm3mq thanks for watching
38 min in and I'm still watching... I'll watch this all fuckin night.lolol...
Thanks for watching brother!
...and here I was hearing people say Covert Instruments tools were overpriced.
Thank you!
Bravo...That is all #Peace
🙏
Great video… keep it up…
Thank you for watching!
RAH! GET SOME!
Rah.
I learn from Bill, LPL, Lock Noob; have never seen a Peterson video.
Yeah, now we know why lol thank you so much for watching!
Btw i love your reviews, keep it up !
Thank you so much!
Do you like these better than jimylong's?
Hell no! Nothing is better than Jimy Longs! Facts!
It’s not slander if it is the truth
Honestly the quality control issues alone are enough to turn me off ever buying a Peterson tool. When im spending 10 dollars for what is essentially just a bent piece of metal and it isnt even bent right thats just a slap in the face
He does make a nice case though…….
You are not wrong there! I wish it had a zipper though.
Look at him everybody!!!”
Like a spoiled child 🤢🤮🥴🤮.
I dont think i will ever. Ever. Buy something from peterson, just strictly does not seem worth the money in any way
@sandman_locksport , gg for the autneticity... I also like their products but Ken, well...
CI is such a better value !
Just to kniw, i can't find it so have you deleted your "remastered review of the genesis set " ? Please :)
Thanks for watching and thank you for the kind words! I had to remove that video because somebody had given me information to put in the video, and then the same person complained about said information, so I found it best to remove the video. Sometimes I make mistakes, sometimes people lead me in the wrong direction. I didn’t want to put out a video if it had so much misinformation. I’ll try again in the future with more correct information.
@@sandman_locksport ok thank you
