And he took the road to heaven in the morning. Rest in peace, Shane.
Gotta be Fairtytale for Xmas No1. Bless him, RIP 😔
The most loved Drunken voice is now making Heaven much more fun of a place
Sad to say i must be on my way! Ciao buddy
@@klementinarogar8304 wherever he is now, I want to go there when it‘s time.
Well, he's on that cool place with all the cool musicians, I guess 😎.
But, actually, He is with us , in his music....always...
Singing to an english crowd dead as a door nail, the good irish know how to party 🇮🇪
Yeah just looking at how quiet the place is I could only imagine if this was in cork the place would be jumping.
@@briangallagher3106 you know it brian 👊
God rest your immortal soul, Shaney boy!
at a time when being Irish in England was hostile, racist and very often painful, yourself and the fellas were the finest ambassadors for Irish culture that there were in Northern England in the 80s.
Thank you Shane, for the memories, the music, and God love ye, for the craic.
one in a million.
sleep easy Shaney.
Yes, being attacted on the way home from school (a Catholic one) was a daily hazard. But we stood firm and held our heads high against the ignorent thugs, and won thanks to your music/lyrics and publicity.......💪thank you Shane and the Pogues. Dominic .....💣
@@dominicjackson3769....Yes went through that at our Roman Catholic Secondary School in the North of Sheffield, got called " Licks" & spat at for wearing our green & grey uniform as we walked/ waited at the bus stop!
Only Roman Catholic Secondary in that area, surrounded by 4 other Secondary Schools who fought with us.At home near the Northern General Hospital we had eggs thrown at our windows by a few of the older kids on our estate, there was a ex British Soldier who lived on our road who wouldn't let our County Longford born Dad walk past his house so Dad had to walk over the green where we lived..Years later after our Dad died my brother married the Ex Soldier's daughter, they are still together 27 later.
Surprised as I got older to hear about some people I knew putting their children in Catholic Schools to give them a better education, the same people who growing up on our small estate had thrown eggs at our home & done òther things because we were Catholic!!!
Ahhh Shane n Sinéad you ARE part of my childhood, & we will remember, play your music & remember your contribution to our world always, carry on playing music ,singing a having a good craic in Heaven alongside Kirsty another one who went too soon!! Xx ❤

RIP Shane, one of the heroes of my youth, forever in my pantheon and in my heart and immortal through the art you have given us. Love from Italy.
Shane inspired me to start a career in music after high school.
Amazing how many people felt this loss--of assorted ages, too....We will all meet again...
@@barbarabaldwin7120 It's heartwarming to see how much Shane was loved all around the world
He was a special person and loved by all x
hell yeah.
Very few musicians had the skill and creativity of Shane, RIP
@TihetrisWeathersby
Not quite sure we can call Shane a "musician." A great singer/songwriter, yes, but not a musician per se.
my mom got somebody to do amazing hand embroidy - a huge " The Pogues" on the back of my denim jacket in 1987...I wore it witb pride for many years....RIP Shane....😢💔 🇮🇪

He made bad teeth look cool.
Thanks for that giggle lol, thanks for everything Shane 💚
I was so sad when heard about Shane's death. Love his singin', voice, emotions, feelings that he put in his perfomances. And he was so natural in that! God bless your soul, Shane. Always in my heart.
Thank you Shane. The Pogues cheered me up as an 18-year-old in the late '80s. Love from Tokyo.
And we sang him a song of times long gone

36 years in the future and we’re still lovin’ it. GOD BLESS THE POGUES !

Saw them in the 80's can't believe there are only a few ppl dancing. That's all we did at the show! RIP Shane 😢
Thanks for all the great memories and the joy you still bring.
Can't we all turn the clocks back and do it all again?
R.I.P. Shane MacGowan, they don't make em like you anymore 😢
We will never forget you and your charismatic voice. Now you share the same Place in Heaven with all the irish musician heroes phil lynott, gary moore and rory gallagher. RIP Shane ❤ Thank you for the amazing music 🎶
Heck YEAH!!!! 😆 MY YOUTH! I'm an Ozzie, but lived in England from the mid to late 80's for 2-3yrs. I had my 13, 14 & 15th (I think, lol) ..b'day there. We used to seek out and get the train to London & saw some great bands and AMAZING gigs at the Marquee on Tottenham Court Rd (friends bands played there a few times) and many other awesome places. Never got asked for ID once. Thankfully my older sis & her mates let me tag along, and I ended up becoming a sort of mascot for them, lmao. Was like a bunch of big brothers & sisters all looking out for me, and pulling me into line, when some situations could've got out of control..or ALL of us kicked out! 😂 Having an Ozzie accent and passing for at LEAST 16.. I never got hassled for ID.
Best years for moulding and influencing my musical taste.
Thanks SO MUCH for sharing this!!!!
(I was listening to this during last Summer.. before COVID-19 hit!)
Just entered Spring after a cold & wet Winter here in Melbourne.
In total lockdown, here atm.. but this got me up dancing all over the house- WOO HOO!!!! 😊✌🐨
@Matthew721 79 @Matthew721 79 No, nobody huge. That I remember anyway...lol.
A lot of friends bands nobody really heard of, sadly. We were broke. Just a bunch of friends bands who got early evening mid week time slots. The night Dragon Bones (friends) played somewhere else in London, maybe there??.. we saw Zodiac Mindwarp play , (at the Marquee) afterwards. One REALLY weird and messed up night, but in a really good way that I'll never forget. It was an awesome place. It was an achievement in itself getting in, being underage!!
✌😊
God bless and keep you Shane, xx For the joy you gave and the pure poetry of you soul xx ☘️

YES, a new version. I’ve played the other one to death, inc every year on the anniversary of losing my dear friend. And we sang him a song of times long gone
Though we knew that we'd be seeing him again. GBNF ❤️
I’m buying him beer and whiskey cause he’s going far away.
One great band .The energy was brilliant,Of course the genius of McGowan is there too👏👏
Well Jimmy played harmonica in the pub where I was born
He played it from the night time to the peaceful early morn
He soothed the souls of psychos and the men who had the horn
And they all looked very happy in the morning
Now Jimmy didn't like his place in this world of ours
Where the elephant man broke strong men's necks
When he'd had too many Powers
So sad to see the grieving of the people that I'm leaving
And he took the road for God knows in the morning
We walked him to the station in the rain
We kissed him as we put him on the train
And we sang him a song of times long gone
Though we knew that we'd be seeing him again
Sad to say I must be on my way
So buy me beer and whiskey 'cause I'm going far away (far away)
I'd like to think of me returning when I can
To the greatest little boozer and to Sally MacLennane
The years passed by the times had changed I grew to be a man
I learned to love the virtues of sweet Sally MacLennane
I took the jeers and drank the beers and crawled back home at dawn
And ended up a barman in the morning
I played the pump and took the hump and watered whiskey down
I talked of whores and horses to the men who drank the brown
I heard them say that Jimmy's making money far away
And some people left for heaven without warning
We walked him to the station in the rain
We kissed him as we put him on the train
And we sang him a song of times long gone
Though we knew that we'd be seeing him again
sad to say I must be on my way
So buy me beer and whiskey 'cause I'm going far away (far away)
I'd like to think of me returning when I can
To the greatest little boozer and to Sally MacLennane
When Jimmy came back home he was surprised that they were gone
He asked me all the details of the train that they went on
Some people they are scared to croak but Jimmy drank until he choked
And he took the road for heaven in the morning
We walked him to the station in the rain
And we kissed him as we put him on the train
And we sang him a song of times long gone
Though we knew that we'd be seeing him again
Sad to say I must be on my way
So buy me beer and whiskey 'cause I'm going far away (far away)
I'd like to think of me returning when I can
To the greatest little boozer and to Sally MacLennane
Thank you

yup 💚
Shane Macgowan is a truly amazing songwriter.
Poet.
Fantastic! Knocks seven shades of shit out of any of today's musical offerings. Thank God for The Pogues.
Sounds like what people said about the Dubliners music when the pogues came out in the 80s, keep an open mind......
There’s some great music it’s just not popular, don’t trash what haven’t been heard, but yes popular music is mostly shit
Aye! That's a fact!
far away!
There's just more music to filter through today. Believe me, there are incredible bands alive and active today, just keep your ears open. Arcade Fire and The National will go down as musical giants years from now.
Such a shame he was pretty much finished after three albums and by 30. As soon as he became dependent on drink your finished. He's in his honeymoon period here and up until 88/9 then the drink is controlling him and he tried and tried and tried to get sober but couldn't and never wrote a good song again. Also the music industry killed him, some of the states he was in and they put him on your. There's a massive to someone being a hellraiser and getting pissed to being an alcoholic drinking coz you have to
RIP Shane.Genious songwriter.
I was lucky enough to see The Boys live in Stockholm 1987 and 1989. In 89 Shane was so hammred so he past out after three songs on the drumkit and Spider had to do all the vokals.
As brilliant as the gig must have been, I really bet the music lost a lot without Spider's whistle playing. He was usually the key driving force in their lead melody lines. Unless of course, he can sing while playing whistle. If anyone has that superpower I'm sure it's him.
Have good trip Shane! 😢
Absolutely lyrical genius we'll never see anyone like shane thanks for brilliant music and may you be with christy sinead and have the crack may you rest in peace Shane Mac Gowen
One of my fave songs ever. Good times

He's still so fucking brilliant.Slainté to all of you🍻
That's an eko guitars.
Eko is an italian brand and they make amazing guitars. As an Italian, I'm really proud of seeing this
They're ok. Don't see them so much these days. The 12 strings seemed quite popular. I'd be more proud of the man who plays the mandolino......
I have an Eko (6-string but I'd love a 12) that's a year or two older than I am myself and its a beautiful guitar. I have more expensive acoustics but I swear my songs and voice sound better playing that guitar. You're right to be proud.
RIP Shane. Thanks for the Music.
I feel like a teenager again. Thanks so much for posting!
Yes, Sir. I totally agree!
Is that date written in the american? First of November 1985 would make it the day after I was born and I would be so proud but either way I love this to my soul
I always thought it was brilliant that Shane played a 12-string. As far as I know, he has never commented on it, but I always wondered if that was intentional, to project the sound of the rhythm with so many other instruments, or if he simply preferred it. I know in all the folk bands I played in, it never once occurred to me to use a 12-string, wish I'd thought of that. I play a classical nylon string, like Ronnie Drew uses. But that 12-string just really adds an extra punch to the rhythm. Brilliant.
Amazing band , amazing song. Such brilliant musicians !
I love this song. Sleep well Shane x
I'm sad to say, he must be on his way. RIP Shane. 💔
I'm sure that we'll be seeing him again 💚
Where else was he meant to be going? Now, he's arrived. Silly heathen.
RIP Shane, thanks for the memories
Great video to start my Saturday morning!
wow that wouldve been the best mood setter!
God bless you, Shane.
Thanks Shane for enriching my life
How you could possibly be in that crowd standing still is beyond me
An actual live Recording and not then playing over the studio version!
Can see why and how bands like Flogging Molly were influenced by The Pogues. Good stuff.
Influenced at best, straight up Plagiarism at worst. I was blown away when I heard flogging Molly’s “another bag of bricks” I had to listen 5 times then search the inter webs for flogging Molly crediting the pogues . Another bag of bricks and sentimental Jonny are blatant copies of Turkish song of the damned and fiesta. I understand being inspired by and appreciating and crediting the band that acted as your muse. But not saying anything seems dickish to me. But wtf do I know.
I walked my daughter down the aisle to "The Fairytale Of New York". Everybody went first, then a pause and we walked to the second part. ;)
I picked three Pogue songs for my wedding...Fairytale of New York, Dingle Regata, and Haunted. You can't have a proper "punk" wedding without some Pogues
Did you read the lyrics?
R.I.P. Shane
в России тоже любят the pogues

Rum Sodomy, and the Lash album was a masterpiece.
