Tenacious D is underrated. A lot of folks just think of them as funny and miss just how skilled they are.
It's almost like they are holding back their awesome just to be goofballs, take that governor off and who knows what they can become.

Although this is a more serious take on a song by TD, the enunciation of the “witchoo” keeps the comedic element present. Genius!

The guitar is such a mood setter!
In this song, he has a kind of weathered storytelling voice. Slightly reminiscent of Johnny Cash singing Hurt. I think that comes from his being an actor. He puts some city miles on the song as if he's lived a lot of life. Great version.
Tenacious D & Jack Black deserve a Grammy, an Oscar and a Nobel in Music if they exist (if they don't then they need to be established). What needs to be added. Unless I recommend you their other songs, Kickapoo, Tribute, Classico, etc.
Part of what makes the original by Chris Isaak is that haunting guitar part that is sadly missing in every cover I've ever heard.

Tenacious D is so fun, but also talented. Love your reactions, great job! Dio and Geoff Tate are def worth continuing to explore. Not sure if hard rock/metal is your thing but 80s was a treasure trove of talent, despite all the theatrics.

I always loved JBs voice and have already visited 3 different Tenacious D concerts.
While I'm writing this, there's another band I'd like to recommend to you. "Runrig" a scottish folk rock band. Some popular songs and my favourites are "Every River" (Rarities - Best Of Deluxe), "The Greatest Flame" (Amazing Things) and "Loch Lomond" (The Highland Connection). Their singer changed at some point. I especially love "Every River", beacuse you don't notice it's live until the end.

If you want to see just how good he is just watch him sing War Pigs on some late night tv show. Even though he adds in his usual playfulness it's still one of the best vocal covers I've heard. And it gets cut to a commercial. Another FULL VERSION NEEDED song. I suggest this because there is not a truly great cover of that song

I thought they were Gibson artists, or at least always used them. I don’t thing I’ve ever seen either use a Martin. It sounds phenomenal though. Also Jack Black just always gives High Fidelity nostalgia vibes when he’s playing music.

If I may make a suggestion, I'd love to see your thoughts on the band öOoOoOoOoOo. They have some extremely varied and interesting vocals that seem to drift between traditional and somewhat esoteric/experimental styles throughout their songs, so I think it would be fun to see your analysis.
In any case, it's always enjoyable to see your reaction to, and enthusiasm for, the varied gamut of music you explore.

Tenacious D is evolving, (HAS evolved, actually), and yet most people listen to them with an almost greedy expectation of some humorous element to come through and make them laugh... Try just listening, and quit expecting them to be funny all the time. Try just appreciating the musical greatness that so many take for granted.
You should try and give their song Dude I Totally Miss You a listen next time, that song is SO good (as well as all their other songs).
Jack Black is so good on this but Glass! Total eargasm and listening to this song was a major impetus for me to try and learn the lead on this song.

If you want an outstanding cover of this song and without a doubt the best in my opinion watch Daisy Gray, the version of her on the beach. One of my favourite songs ever.

What I love about their guitars is that they're very basic guitars, the most vanilla shape of western guitar that every teen starts out on, not even cutaway, and they're showing people that you can write and sing and perform and rock out and have success even if you don't have the latest Fender electric and no matter how you look. If you want to react to someone talented, yet a little different, maybe give Merrill Garbus of Tune-Yards a shot - The live video of "Powa" from their performance at Brooklyn Steel is amazing - it is the teasing of the audience to try and match her range during the end rift that gets me... Such a great blues / rock / pop song from a lesser known artist. Also, how many vocalist have you covered that perform their own backing vocals in a live setting?

She is so right, most of us have singing within us, but most of us don't have a need to use it. Be reminded how many bands were created by 3 or 4 friends and the one that did not play a instrument had to be the singer, and they never sang before. If you don't believe me look up some very famous bands that this was the case.
