Mermaid Flounce Skirt Pattern // Making A Lemon Print Dress

  • Today I wanted to show you all one way to create a flounced mermaid style flared skirt pattern. There are many different ways to draft styles like these, from a gathered flounce, to a gored skirt, to a more circle cut flounce or ruffle like this one! I chose to test out the new skirt shape with some fun summery lemon print cotton.
While I do think this busy print could perhaps use a big navy blue belt to cinch in the waist a bit, I'm excited to wear this new dress out in the summer time one day!

First, a disclaimer: So many of you have kindly offered to send me things, including vintage items you may have inherited, and I am so honored you would think of me and of course I do adore vintage treasures, however, unfortunately I only have so much storage space currently! So there is a chance that if something just wont work for me, or doesn't fit me etc, that I may not be able to keep all of your lovely things. Please only send things if you are okay with the possibility that I may donate items I just cannot keep. If you would prefer I put things that I can't keep into the TCH Etsy shop to help raise funds for me and the channel, please specify this in a note or letter in your parcel. Thank you so much!

I am Italian and from Rome, so I am biased ahah Also love Naples and Sicily! But anywhere, really, you can find beautiful places to visit!
Ischia is great; the Sicilian small islands (i'm very partial to Lampedusa); the Tuscan countryside; Umbria with the gorgeous hills and the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi ; Matera with its cave dwellings; Pompei; Villa d'Este just outside Rome, a Renaissance villa with 100 fountains; Abruzzo has gorgeous protected areas; medieval Bologna and byzantine monuments in Ravenna; near Naples there is an underwater Archeological Area... so many things to visit and only one life!
(The Italian word for ice cream is "gelato", btw, for "ice" is "ghiaccio")
    Gorgeous dress as usual!

I am so glad to hear you mention “a marketing opportunity “. Sales is the name of the game in life if your want to make a living. Maybe you could do the detailed high resolution photo book, with explanations as to the sewing. You are the perfect person to do it, you are already a author as well as a textile and construction expert. I love to watch you sew. You are so confident, and your hands are beautiful. Thank you for another great lesson in the construction of a vintage garment. Stay safe and healthy. BUT…..your travel blogs with videos were beautiful. At my age (72) I doubt I will ever get to see those beautiful places for myself. Besides you showed us places that were not always the first choices to visit for the uninitiated among us. My travel ambition for now is a winter train ride from Chicago, through the mountains, all the way to Sacramento, CA. I would like to fly to Chicago, take the train to California, then maybe rent a car and see some sights, then either drive or fly back home. I would love to see the redwood trees, so while out on the west coast, it would be wonderful to drive up the coastline with day trips to see the sights. Sounds expensive, but I could see so many things! Maybe you could do a similar trip and vlog about it. Take a friend along with you!

Italian over here, happy to help.
I can't recommend places in Italy without mentioning my city, Torino, it's beautiful, biggest ancient Egypt museum in Italy, there is the royal palace, and the hunting palaces in stupinigi and Venaria (which are Versailles inspired). I did visit Venice a few years ago, but I honestly found the small islands around Venice to be more interesting and cute. If you want to go in the summer... Not in touristy cities, I made the mistake to go in august in Florence and in Rome (in different occasions) and yes, it's not ideal.
Ghiaccio is the word for ice you were looking for.
In the summer we all escape to the beach, Sardinia has the best water over all, super green and clear, but there are great beaches also in Sicily and Puglia. Naples is also beautiful for the history I just personally haven't been yet.
But I think I would go on forever recommending Italy..

I love how you de-mystify how elements can be contructed and manipulated, giving the rest of us confidence!
I'm currently hand-binding the seams/edges of a long cardigan that I'm making, because it's a bit of a loose knit. Not because I have couture delusions, but because it slows me down, and reduces my fabric spend! (And I like hand-sewing).
PS yes March/April is a good time to visit Italy, nice comfortable temperature. End of October is also good. I wenr to Florence several years ago, stayed near the Medici Chapels, and got a thing called a FirenzeCard, to pre-pay for basically ALL museums, and queue-jump. My sister and I were lucky enough to visit Italy in 2019 right before the pandemic struck - there were reports of it starting to show up in northern Italy right as we were heading down into Florence, and then Rome. February ended up being a great time to go - the weather was beautifully sunny almost the whole time, though cool enough to call for carrying a sweater or a jacket. I would highly recommend going to Venice, especially during Carnival - it was so much more than I was expecting, and getting to go to the various street fairs and watch people in their Carnival get-ups was delightful.

This is such a fun dress! Very "European holiday" kind of vibe, it reminds me a lot of the summer cocktail dresses we wear in Belgium. The ice thing is mostly due to cost; it's more expensive for restaurants to add ice to everything, it's also why there's no free refills here! To be fair, most people here also drink their drinks so quickly that ice isn't really necessary. Belgians especially love their beer, we have something like 1000+ varieties which is frankly astounding. If you ever swing out to the Louvain/Leuven area I'll gladly take you out for a drink, after seven years here I can give you a great tour of the city of Leuven!
