TT Artisan AUTOFOCUSING 32mm f/2.8 for Nikon Z Mount: The Competition is Stiff

  • This is the first autofocusing lens from a young company which has produced some VERY interesting manual focus lenses that we like very much. But how good is their first foray into autofocus? And how well is it suited to the Nikon Z-Mount? Competition is stiff. Buy here: geni.us/sDbFgy
NB: TTArtisan provided the sample lens, but had no input whatsoever to this video

The Nikon Z40 f2 is phenomenal for the cost. It has a wonderful non clinical look to its results. When I want to go light, I keep it on the Z6II and rarely disappointed by its performance.

Treat yourself. It won’t come off your camera. As compact as the Z FF mirrorless cameras are their lenses are massive. I know the F mount equivalents are usually bigger but the Z body is compact so it’s really nice to have a beautiful lens that is also compact.

In my humble opinion this lense is not meant to replace any of the existing lenses. Lenses like this one are toys. I might need a z40 F2 for how good it is doing its job. But at the same time I might want a lense like this one for the fun. You know, like those big flares and the lack of contrast sometimes can be fun to play with. It's just like nowadays some people will just randomly buy a disposable camera and waste a roll on a piece of plastic lense. It takes you off from the norm and it is interesting, as long as it doesn't cost much.

The 40mm F/2 Nikkor lens is actually the best buy dollar for dollar in the Z prime game (when budget is the primary concern) - It is very sharp but has tons of character - it focuses fast enough and has zero focus breathing - it smokes the Canon 50mm 1.8 for R mount. The 50mm 1.8 S is the best prime lens for the Z system if budget is important but not paramount. The 50mm 1.8 S punches way above its weight easily competing head to head with $2500 lenses for its modest price of $599 (or so).
All of the above said, if you are going to pay $150 for a 32mm TT Artisan - you definitely should save up the extra $100 and get the native Nikon 40mm f/2 - guaranteed it smokes the TT Artisan in every way - it is really a great lens for its price - probably one of the best lenses in existence for under $300.

My thoughts are that getting a new lens so long as it is decent is always fun, and exploring its quirks allows you to think in new ways, so a cheap and cheerful lens like most of those TTArtisan are making is a good option it offers a fun experience for a low price.

I would totally agree with that. I love the Z Primes but given most of my shooting is on the F Mount D800 or D610, this lens looked like a good black and white walkaround lens for my Z50. I don't expect miracles but it will still be compact and fun I expect. :)

The TTArtisan autofocus lens that makes the most sense to me so far is the 27/2.8 for Fuji X. Mine hasn't shown up yet, but we've seen enough samples and reviews to know that it has a lot of cats eye and almost swirly bokeh. Almost a vintage-lens feel, but with autofocus. That's a realm with a lot of potential from manufacturers like TTArtisans. Imagine if they did an APS-C 40mm f/2.0 Biotar design (or 58mm f/2 full frame), to lean into the vintage character of a Zeiss Jena or Helios 44.
Along the lines of "you get what you pay for," these budget manufacturers will probably struggle to have a prime that really makes the most of a modern camera, so the best approach might be to not attempt it. Bring modern convenience with a kind of optical character that just doesn't get made anymore. Nikon can clearly make a better lens--there's no doubt that their 40/2 would be a sharper and nicer lens. But maybe making a worse lens that has a special vibe would be a wiser niche in the market for some of these companies.

I got Z7II and the almost-unbelievably cheap yet robust 50mm f1.8 S after watching your past videos, and now I’ll have to seriously consider this one. Hopefully other third party manufacturers will continue to help Nikon expand their Z mount lineup (and continue to ensure that I will be in financial ruins). Great video and breakdown as always, Hugh! Love from Taiwan.

Sadly, this lens is not available anymore in the TTArtisan shop, some leftovers remain in thirdparty AliExpress shops. There were plans to release it in a variety of mount but only the Z version was released. I think the development took long and by the time the lens came out it was already obsolete, the presence of a Micro USB port is a clear sign of it. It got replaced fast with the AF 35mm 1.8. TTArtisan only made one firmware update and lens corrections were never offered (weird on them). It's not excellent, but I love the 32mm focal lenght, much versatile than 35mm. Optically is average, MFD is mediocre, and coatings are bad, I still love it. I used it a lot when I worked for a regional newspaper, it was smaller than my 35mm 1.8.

Christmas 2020 I bought a Nikon Z5 for $995. I followed that up with the Nikon 40mm Z lens for around $260. OMG! Such a deal. Stopped down a bit, from f4 to f11 this camera and lens combo is terrific. I use this pair mainly for shooting photos for eBay however if I had a limited budget and could afford only one camera and inexpensive lens, this pair would be it. 35mm size sensor. Weather resistant body and lens. UHS2 SD cards. High res EVF.

It's funny, back in SLR days - not DSLR, SLR he said betraying his age - I switched to Nikon from Minolta because everyone said Nikon had better glass. And they were right. And that still holds today. If I am going to use a 3rd party lens on a Z camera, it had better exceed what I can get from what Nikon offers. I could see where this lens might make sense if you don't have the extra $125 to pop for the Z 28 f2.8. Otherwise save up and get that one. You won't be disappointed.

I bought this lens for a dirt cheap price of $100. It's not perfect, particularly against bright light without the hood extended. With the hood extended, there's nothing that I do not like. Wide open, the centre of the frame is surprisingly very very sharp. And don't let the 2.8 aperture fool you, the bokeh is actually soft, softer than my Fuji 23mm F1.4 (equiv to 35mm). Another thing I like about this lens is the slightly softer contrast compared to modern Z lenses. This works well for taking photo of a person with harsh background light. Also, I used to prefer 35mm equivalent focal length over 28mm and 40mm, but now 32mm is my favourite.

I gotta tell you, I have all the f 1.8 Z primes, and I agree that they are great value. Saying that. I also own the 40mm f2 and 28 f2.8 Z and…..I love them. Light, fun and darn good. I would recommend either as an inexpensive prime for someone starting out in the Z ecosystem. I have enjoyed the 40mm focal length so much that I am thinking of buying a Voigtlander Nokton F mount 40mm f2 for my, still in use, 35mm Nikon SLRs, like my beloved FM3a.

I agree sometimes you swing, sometimes you hit and sometimes you miss. I have a good collection of Nikon z glass, some f mount zooms, but I have a mid priced Viltrox 85 for Z that I adore, and then a Loawa 100 macro that makes me long for the new 105 with every capture I begrudgingly attempt. Lenses, like furniture should be bought higher priced to be loved longer.

  • @RyanH0809

I would say the biggest thing hurting the little 32mm from ttartisan is that Nikon has already put out those 2 compact and affordable primes, 28mm f2.8 & 40mm f2. I have both and I can tell you I've never been more content with a budgety purchase. I love my Fuji xf18mm f2, but I paid $300 for that dinosaur and I think it was too expensive at that price.
The Only reason to purchase ttartisan lens is if you just absolutely MUST have 32mm and the 28mm isn't good enough. Both the 28mm & 40mm from Nikon can be had for less than $300 new and as low as $200 or so used. I bought both for just over $400 on KEH. Those lenses are not without their optical flaws, but they're pretty easy to work around, and they're native lenses that you can feel confident will always work and receive firmware updates. At least the ttartisan 25mm AF lens for Fuji fills a weird niche in that Fuji can't keep stock of their new 27mm lens even 2 years after launch... So, ttartisan is making sales in Fuji's absence in that case.

    So in this range I have the 28mm 2.8 Z, the 40mm 2 Z, the 50mm 1.8 Z and just picked up the TTArtisans 32mm 2.8 Z. I bought it new from B&H for just under $150.00
    I also have a 14-30 f4, 24-70 in both f2.8 and f4.0 as well as the 24-200 and 24-120 but those aren't primes so I won't compare.
    Is the TTArtisan perfect? No
Does it have some flaws? Yes
    Is it great? No
    Is it worth ~150.00?
Well, IMHO it is in the sense that it's a native mount and the AF works "OK". For the price, you really can't do any better when trying to stay away from the FTZ.
For me the 3 biggest issues are: 1 Min focus distance, 2 integral lens hood which prevents the use of #3 no filters.
1 plus I have noticed is that the 32mm is sharper wide open in the center than my Nikkor 40. Maybe that's just sample variation/maybe not.
If you have an extra $150.00 laying around sure, why not...
Need a Xmas present or birthday gift for someone with a Z Mount camera? Go for it (but leave the receipt in the bag just in case).

There are many maladies of inexpensive lenses that can give them unusual flair, interesting bokeh or a soft painterly quality but excessive CA adds nothing and is a total deal breaker for me. For the cost of an adapter and becoming proficient with manual focus there’s dozens of [vintage] lenses that can be found for less than $150 which for me are much more attractive and interesting with little to no CA. But… If you want tack sharp images with great bokeh and controlled flair wide open you just gotta pony up. Just my 2 cents. Thanks for the review Hugh!

I'm intrigued. I don't like 40mm focal length so this may be much better alternative for me. I'd love to see at least one small FF AF prime anywhere in the range between 16-24mm (not more). Since Nikon is obviously incapable of delivering one, I hope someone else will.

Informative review as always, Hugh! So, of course I don't expect the TTartisan to approach either the stellar Nikkor S 50 f/1.8 or the also excellent NIkkor S 24-70 f/4, but did I hear correctly that when stopped down, it matches the sharpness of the Nikkor S 24-70 f/2.8 wide open? Incredible for their first foray into AF!

Nowadays, there are far too many considerations that can affect which lens to buy, such as value, size & weight, bokeh, sharpness, CA, character or clinical, with or w/o the need of an adapter, wants or needs, used or new, AF or MF, OEM or third-party and a few other trendy ones. So I have both Z 40 f/2 (used) and Z 50 f/1.2 S (new) to cover most, if not all the bases of a 'standard' lens for my Z9. 🤣

I have the Z 40 f2 and I have to say, I'm not that impressed. Its good for the money and sometimes has good character but I've ran into so many issues that none of my other Z mount lenses have in my situation anyways, everyone has different requirements. For me the Z 40 F2 has the least reliable auto focus, it doesn't like to focus in low light as say my 50 1.8 S on my Z6II - Just something I noticed...not an extreme big deal. But the biggest issue for me is the color rendering, I don't like it. It has a "cheap" look to me, kinda magenta hued where as my Z 28 2.8 has a warmer look despite color temp and setting being the exact same. The softness of the 40 f2 at close focus (I like close focusing) is like the 23mm f2 from Fujifilm as in Vaseline smeared on the front element haha, I suppose you could make it work for some filmic style shots. Also the purple fringing is bad and the lens does not like bright highlights and any sort of small tiny bright lights like stars for example cause a weird look, often distracting. Those were the issue that I ran into from my experience with it for almost a year. I also don't like how cramped the little 28/40 primes are on the body too, the bigger lenses are a little more comfortable to me.
The TT Artisan was interesting because it sort of would give me a middle of the road between the 28/40 and it's a lot more narrow so for me it would be more comfortable to shoot with overall as a small carry option.
Not saying any of the lenses are bad! They are all good in their own right and you can take bad photos with ANY lens! :)
