Amen! Nobody uses wide open 1,2 or 1,8 lenses in broad daylight. I rather have razer sharp primes from 2.0 or 2,5 then from big and bulky 1.2 or 1.8 lenses. Spot on Hugh 👍🏻

Hugh, thanks for this. I'd planned to mate the 35 f/2.8 to my A7C for walking around downtown, then these dropped and the the 40 gave me pause. Though a small difference, I wasn't sure if I wanted to give up the field of view. The pictures you shared show the 40 will be plenty wide for the types of shots I usually take. Plus the 40 has the added advantage of being slightly faster when the sun starts to set.

They're getting closer, Sony, to producing a kit that actually appeals to me . These lenses and a somewhat re-designed A7C seem very complimentary to each other. Then again, so would the Sigma I-series. But I just don't get along too well with Sony haptics.

The lens hoods remind me of Leica's old R line of summicrons with how they taper from the focus ring. That and Nikon's 45mm f mount for their FM3A. A bit of a retro throwback on a modern lens.

I will buy one for sure, but which one is a real question. Fun fact, maybe this 40 will replace 35 1.8 and 55 1.8. It makes sense as I also own 24 1.4 and I will buy 50 1.2 as a replacement for a very good 50 1.4 (great, but improved af is important for me).

Great review Hugh, and I completely agree with you about the "real world" practicality of these lenses. I have the 40, and am adding the 24. However the cynic in me does wonder if these lenses are the reason that Sony put only one control wheel on the a7c!! Have said that they are a fabulous combination.

This type of analysis is why HB is the greatest of all time for gear reviews. It's not just all positive only fan boy raves. He breaks it down with a product's pros and cons but then always has the realism to say "It's great but you probably don't *need* it"

Another "if only this wasn't E-mount" moment.. they really have so many nice lenses now but I just can't see myself switching over to Sony land. Hopefully this'll be the start of more love for 40mms though - something without the steppy, hunty autofocus and impractically small focus rings of many pancakes, but not the size of a Sigma Art self defense tool. You know how much I love that Batis 40mm, too.. ah.

They’re so good that I’m buying the 40 in a few weeks time, with the £200 cash back that I’ll get after 30 days, and the £100 discount that I’m getting after buying the Sony @7 III (with the kit zoom lens) I bought last weekend.
I wanted the @7 IV but the extra cost is to buy that camera is enough to buy a prime lens… the @7 III is still a great camera.

I got the 40mm f/2.5 and it reminds me of the prime that made me first love with mirrorless cameras, the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7, except that it's much better in every way. Hi, if you would have to choose one of them for travel/street/some portraits, would you choose the 40mm? is it not too "tight"? or would you go for sony 35mm 1.8 FE? I am only thinking about the size between these two lenses here.... the 35mm is a bit bigger and heavier.

    • @3BMEP

I’d actually choose the 40. More FOV than a 50, but a bit less distorted up close than the 35 - and the incremental speed advantage for me is offset by the 40’s size and weight. But both are great lenses.

Excellent breakdown. I'm currently a Nikon shooter and while I love the images I get I am continually frustrated by the shots I miss due to the clunky AF and the size of the lenses and bodies is a few inches and ounces more that prevent me from carrying my camera in all environments. For these reasons I am heavily considering an A7C with a set of these primes.

I'm viewing this video more than 2 years after it was made. Still relevant. I think the last point about the compact a7C series is important, since pairing a high quality small lens with a high quality small body makes a great combination. And I believe having the aperture ring on the lens (to use your words) covers up a lot of ergonomic issues in Sony body design. On a side note, I with the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 had an aperture ring for the same reason.

I feel like I'm going to get the 40 G and wait for the possible vaporware 35-40 1.8/2 G, only to give in years later and get a 35 GM a week before 1.8/2 G is released XD. OTOH, this is basically the perfect daily carry with an α7 C/C II and is what seems to be the answer from Sony to all the fans of the rx1 series.
Not an event photographer, so while the GM is remarkably small and performant for what it is... still feels a little rich for my blood? The only reason I want f1.8/2 for this kind of package is that to my knowledge there isn't an easy solution for bad lighting that is both portable and not distracting other than faster glass... which itself starts to become a problem as you climb to 1.4/1.2/0.95 territory. I find that usually if I stick to f1.8/2 I can stay below 6400 ISO, and those lenses (well, at this point, only the 20 G on the Sony platform but also perhaps the 35 and 50 1.8 S lenses) tend not to make me hate carrying my camera around. I guess the only upside to the current lineup is that with a few exceptions products released later in development cycles tend to be better, and if a 35 or 40 f1.8/2 G lens is released in 5-10 years maybe Sony will have developed yet another innovative optical technology to make lenses smaller. Perhaps we'd see a 300g specimen bearing all the optical pedigree of their current GM line, which... might even be worth the wait.

I mean when you get down to it, the mirrorless aps-c/m4thirds cameras became so popular due to their more portable size right? Not the actual sensor or any other technological reason. So now full frame is getting to be the same size thanks to the Sony a7c, and the even more overlooked sigma fp. In fact one could easily say that this new smaller sony lineup was a direct result of the recently released sigma L lineup. Which were more than likely inspired by, and geared towards the likes of the Sigma Fp, aka, the smallest full frame digital camera on the market. Either way I love the competition and what it ends up doing for us, the consumers. I can only guess these are the beginnings of a trend that will continue to evolve? "At least one can only hope"

You're right about everything and the lenses are great (love the aperture rings), but anyway Sony full frame bodies are still too expensive for any hobbyist or street photography needs. I got an A7II and can't see any path to upgrade. A7III and A7C are too expensive for non-professional needs, and shame that A7C lacks some physical controls that has some smaller cameras. Now i'm a bit disappointed that I've switched to FF (love full frame bokeh, but probably it's overkill for me). Many crop cameras are good enough these days. And they're even smaller and lighter.

Yeah, great review. It’s ok to go with the trio when you’re new to Sony but when you already have : FE4-5.6/28-60, FE1.8/20G, FE1.8/35, FE1.8/85, FE4/24-105G OSS and FE1.8/135GM for a7C and a7R IV ! I’m asking myself : oh nice lenses but should I replace one I already own or ??? They are good to carry with the a7c but are they necessary for taking better pictures? For me, NO.
Oh, I’ve also the Ricoh GRIII as an “always with me” camera.

My Sony A7IV just arrived. I l love a light easy going setup. Interested in your thoughts between the Tamron 28-75 F2.8 vs a 3 lens setup of the Sony ultra compact 24MM and 40MM in this video and maybe the Sony FE 85 F1.8 G
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.

We bought the Tamron 28-75/2.8 G2 for our video work (less focus breathing; no need to change lenses). But for photography of the kind we do, I’d go the three prime lens route.

40 is the one we need for Sony A7, golden rule: only 50mm one should have is either 50f1.2 or 50f1.8, 24mm should go for 24mmf1.4 and lots of people have 24mm from the zoom collection, therefore 40mm is the only Sony made 40mm to enhance the lenses collection

AF is transitive. It's always on something, and how it performs depends on what that is and of course on the user and the body, so please, no more AF generalisations.
I can show you a case where an A9's AF is worse than the CDAF-only Panasonic G9 and the Nikon D500.

Our friends at Nikon can’t release those 28 & 40mm compact primes soon enough. Would love f/2, to rekindle my love affair with the 35mm f/2D from long ago. This 50mm macro has been hanging out in the shadows of the planned lens lineup. Looks like it could be small-ish as well, hmmm.
Sony is not for me, for reasons that are less objective than subjective-but I like where there lenses have been going.
