Dr. Jordan B. Peterson is a professor of psychology at the University of Toronto, a clinical psychologist, and the author of the multi-million copy bestseller 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos, #1 for nonfiction in 2018 in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, the Netherlands, Brazil and Norway, and slated for translation into 50 languages.
Raised and toughened in the frigid wastelands of Northern Alberta, Dr. Peterson has flown a hammer-head roll in a carbon-fiber stuntplane, piloted a mahogany racing sailboat around Alcatraz Island, explored an Arizona meteorite crater with a group of astronauts, built a Native American Long-House on the upper floor of his Toronto home, and been inducted into a Pacific Kwakwaka’wakw family (see charlesjoseph.ca). He’s been a dishwasher, gas jockey, bartender, short-order cook, beekeeper, oil derrick bit re-tipper, plywood mill laborer, and railway line worker. He’s taught mythology to physicians, lawyers, and businessmen; worked with Jim Balsillie, former CEO of Blackberry’s Research in Motion, on Resilient People, Resilient Planet, the report of the UN Secretary General’s High Level Panel on Global Sustainability; helped his clinical clients manage the triumphs and catastrophes of life; served as an advisor to senior partners of major Canadian law firms; penned the forward for the 50th anniversary edition of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s The Gulag Archipelago; lectured across North America, Europe, and Australia in one of the most-well attended book tours ever mounted; and, for The Founder Institute, identified thousands of promising entrepreneurs, in 60 different countries.
With his students and colleagues, Dr. Peterson has published more than a hundred scientific papers, advancing the modern understanding of creativity, competence, and personality, while his now-classic book, Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief (released in June 2018 as a now bestselling author-read audiobook) transformed the psychology of religion. He was nominated for five consecutive years as one of Ontario’s Best University Lecturers and is one of only three professors rated as “life-changing” in the U of T’s underground student handbook of course ratings.
Dr. Peterson recently came out with his new book Beyond Order: 12 More Rules for Life, and I suggest you pick up a copy! This book is full of wisdom on how to bring order to the chaos of our daily lives.
I’ve had the honor of interviewing Dr. Peterson in the past (Episodes 664 and 665), and it was a joy to have him back on the show! Our conversation was so insightful that I had to spilt it into two parts, so make sure to listen to Part One as well!

Ever since I started listening to this man, I lost 60lbs, got out of a toxic relationship, got my own place, got a better job and held it down, stopped drinking and ofc, kept my room clean. I'm seeing an increase in productivity and inner peace that seems exponential. The "community of selves stretched across time" example he gives describes the feeling perfectly.
Edit: to the people asking which specific videos helped me, I honestly can't remember after binging A LOT.

    Some Jordan Peterson takeaways:
    * Have a low intensity leisure activity to help you recover from life's demands.
    * Stop abusing substances that negatively impact you.
    * Exercise because fluid intelligence decreases linearly at age 25 unless you exercise.
    * Maintain relationships because networking is incredibly powerful.
    * Philosophical intelligence grounds you.
    * Help others. Philanthropic activity is beneficial for everyone including you.
    * Be a good person. Everyone wants that person around.
    * Take care of others because people follow people who have got their back.
    * Be honest in your relationships. Honesty breeds trust.
    * Make time and put in the work to create romance and trust. Finding new romance partners is easier but not as satisfying as maintaining your current relationship.
    * Marriage is a vow. If you make a vow to stay, it creates a mindset to resolve problems. Most people don't resolve their problems, they just ignore their vow. They then find a new partner and drag their old problems into their new relationships.
    * Learn how to negotiate so that both in the relationship can work together to satisfy the needs and desires of both.
    * Don't be embarrassed of your desires. Embrace your desires. For example, if you want more or better sex are you and your partner willing to stay in shape or willing to satisfy the desires of the other.
    * Are you courageous or trusting enough to express your desires.
    * Both partners must be in agreement on how to discipline and raise there children.
    * Conflict delayed is conflict multiplied. Address problems before they grow.
    * No one is a mind reader. Tell others how to satisfy your needs or desires.
    * Memory should be used to learn from and protect you from trauma, not to relive the trauma.
    * "Act so you can speak of what you do." In other words, your actions have consequences.
    * Assess your faults and fix them.
    * Shame, guilt and negative feelings of self can crush you or they can create positive transformation.
    * Goals need to challenge you but they need to be obtainable.
    * Have a conversation with your doubts. Work through your doubts. Are the problems that are causing your doubts surmountable?
    * On average, if you work 15% more you make 40% more, so be disciplined.
    * Strive to make things better instead of worse.
    * Pray you have enough terror to be frightened out of your own deceipt.
    * Strive to be grateful and be grateful in spite of suffering.
    * Greatness is the capacity to utter and abide by beautiful truths.

I understand that sometimes it can be difficult to find motivation and drive in life. But it's important to remember that laziness and lack of motivation often stem from a lack of purpose and direction. Take some time to reflect on your goals and passions, and find ways to incorporate them into your daily life. Remember, small steps forward are still progress. Keep pushing yourself and stay positive!

When i broke out of my larthagy, it also ended being sick, constant migraines, i would say every day , im happy, at first in dis belief then i changed my tone to maybe i was . Made my bed, opened curtains let light in put on happy music, then did another simple job, did my dishes, dried and put away, and one little job , then another, at days end i could say, wow look at what ive accomplished, i was happy, 21 days, i changed my thinking, energy begets energy and found HAPPINESS IS AN INSIDE JOB.. YEARS LATTER, ive done all the things in life ive ever wanted to do. Became a ballet dancer, a motivation speaker, president of a parent teacher school association, a state and a national cycling champion at age 56. A model, owned several businesses, became a professional artist, taught dance lessons, became a better mother to 3 sons, a happier wife 43 years till he died. And now at 80, im content, survived breast cancer , knee, hip and shoulder replacement, no complications easy healings..but lived my life for others. HES RIGHT, ITS NEVER ABOUT YOU, making others happy is the gift you give yourself. Ive had an incredible life.

I found that part where he discusses the role of the father to be the other half of the coin. One side is protector/provider while actively creating a safe environment, a protected space to allow your family time for play he said is like paradise and especially to him. That doesn’t mean a physical wall or pin drop on the map but literally can be anywhere the father is because he has cultivated that trust for the family. I see this as a unique take on how men talk to men and take the fear out of fatherhood too. Take ego out of who your kids like better or whether somebody has more and just show up. Great interview. This is totality of what it means to have a meaningful life. Working with your partner through it all is the unicorn 🦄

When he began talking about money at the end I was amazed that he expressed something that my violin teacher had said to me. He said "I am retired and pensioned, I don't really need to charge money for these lessons. However, if I don't charge money for them, then they will have no value because something that is free has no value. That is the reason that I continue to charge money for my lessons despite the fact that it is a hobby that I continue to pursue because it makes me happy."
He is German and doesn't speak any English so I know he did not copy it from Jordan Peterson, it was totally genuine. I find it extremely interesting how two completely different people in completely different parts of the world with completely different lives can share the same idea and express it in a similar manner. :)

It's something you learn as you get older, if you are an observant person. And it's one of the many reasons socialism doesn't work, but difficult to explain to the inexperienced, who think free stuff will set them free to live a productive and fulfilling life. We're already seeing the damage that state run welfare precipitates. It definitely doesn't produce gracious and well meaning recipients, but quite the opposite in many cases. More often it tends to inspire a sense of entitlement, who's other side of the coin face is resentment, and the motivation to see oneself as a perpetual victim, while seeking to justify remaining so.

Stress is the enemy of humans, nothing is worth being unhealthily stressed ever. We should experience stress that comes from tackling a fulfilling challenge. Encountering a problem is just another step toward your goal, so keep walking until you're there. Totally true, in lots of cases. However, life cannot be reduced to some simple rules to apply in every circumstances. What might appear like a problem or a grievance can be in fact an ego bruise, when we don't get what we think we deserve. There are conflicts that resolve by themselves, or that get worse when addressed. And sometimes we might wonder if it's better to be right or to be happy. So, personally I examine the real nature of my grievance, and chose the most appropriate response for_the_specific_situation at hand.

The fact that this man is vilified is bewildering. Every single human being can relate, learn and develop as a consequence of listening to JBP. The world would be a wonderful place if people applied what he says to their lives. It's really that simple, that's what I genuinely believe.

    • @maytt675
      @maytt675 3 роки тому +32

I suspect those who vilify JBP are one or more: jealous of his success, pathologically committed to avoiding the truth and personal responsibility, and/or they are spineless and deathly afraid of the consequences of even appearing to counter the "woke" groupthink. Maybe unformed or malformed conscience? Narcissistic? Something like that.

    • @lachlanbell8390
      @lachlanbell8390 3 роки тому +18

@@maytt675 It's a combination of all those things. His detractors are ego-invested in a narrative that absolves them of any and all responsibility for their own situation in life, which insists that they deserve to receive an equal portion of everyone else's efforts, without requiring them to lift a finger or do anything except be whiny, belligerent, self-righteous & vindictive assholes. Even so much as entertaining the hypothetical possibility that JBP's words had any merit whatsoever, carries the prerequisite (implicit) acknowledgement that their ideologically-perverted caricature of reality isn't necessarily the only possible interpretation of the world, and thus is not entirely & categorically correct in every last one of its assertions. Permitting this implicit acknowledgement to occur within their own minds would necessarily invalidate the default assumed morality of their abhorrent behaviour, along with raising the prospect that it's possible they might be responsible for their own interminable failures.
TL;DR: failing to actively vilify JBP would raise the spectre in these people's minds that maybe, just maybe, *they're* the bad guys in this dumpster fire of an inchoate cultural revolution they're attempting.

He looks so much fuller and you can really see the change in his face and eyes. He looks like a man who is back on the horse ready to charge into battle after a long winter of nursing wounds. So glad he is back.

@@nikieberhardt4624 I love Robin Williams and his philosophies of life. There are several ways to look at this, bad or good take aways. These feelings you may have come from your experience. I believe the message here isnt to victimize yourself of your own doing. If you're seeking for a tradeoff or validation, perhaps make it a profession or seek a psychologist for help, otherwise I believe you're doing it for the wrong reasons, thats why you feel the way you do. People who do this out of their free will and expect nothing in return bc what they do gives them purpose, so they seek nothing but find fulfillment by seeing and making others happy; like me, fishing, food, sports, i involve myself and expereinces by givng my knowledge and surround myself with others who enjoy or know more than i do, bc of my loathsome bad qualities, no support systems, unexpereience, upbringing when i didn't have anyone to teach or guide me, so i get it. And so I believe thats why he became a comdeidan and used it as a support system and yet had his own battle cycle of his insecurity and sought a route of suicide in the long run. I hope this shines a light to those who read this, look for positive outcomes that brings out your character for your sake and the communities you decide to surround yourself, not seek tradeoffs, its what makes us beautiful unique beings when light shines upon you when no one notices you. Be the change you want to see, not what you expect to recieve.

When my son was in the elementary school I had a conversation with one of his teachers and I asked him if they had a class for ethics and morality in the school curriculum and he said they don’t.
I think it’s very important that boys and girls are taught how to grow up to be ladies and gentlemen from a young age. Specially boys, they should learn how to respect females and girls should learn how to respect themselves and their bodies. They should learn how to develop a healthy self esteem bc most of the problems among the young people in this country is the lack of self esteem and a poor sense of self worth.
That would make a healthy society... I think.

My own mother stayed 30yrs with my terrible father. He died and if he hadn’t, she would still have been there. I didn’t know how terrible it was for her until I was older, it was all hidden from us kids. Other family members knew, and didn’t help her. When I have had a man treating me with “questionable behaviour” as you put it, I’ve got out of it very fast. I’m so glad I didn’t end up like my mother or grandmother, being congratulated on their long marriages with anniversary cards and parties, when their long marriages were actual secretly hell on earth.

Just remember... that will take a *_lot_* of work, not so much on him as on yourself _and_ your relationship/interactions with him. It takes an effort and a specific choice and commitment to love someone. Love is something you _do_ not something you merely _feel._ The ability to forgive is paramount in a marital relationship. If you can't do it then your relationships will always fail. Whenever you have a fight (and you will, unless you're both angels or both come from a long line of folks who stayed happily married their entire lives and your parents from both sides taught you how marital relationships work) you must once again either remember you love him/her (speaking here to both genders) and consciously make the effort to forgive and recommit to loving him/her because if you don't you will fall out of love over time and the relationship will end in ruins. It's not easy, but it _is_ worth it.

When I read for people who’ve been through tragic relationships, it’s the inability to trust oneself that had to be healed for them to move forward and have renewed faith in anyone else. 🌹

He verbalizes ideas that I've held intuitively for years..so well...and then he introduces concepts I've never considered. Great stuff.

Whether Jordan’s interviews are 5 mins or 5 hours, I’m always mesmerised by what he has to speak on. His logic is compelling.

This reminded me of my first-year psychology professor telling me that should I go further I should develop a hobby that has nothing to do with psychology. I worked in the behavioral health field for years and I made sure I took mental health days when I needed them, I meditated and had alone time and just had fun times with my friends and family...it worked!

@@atishayjain203 Yes she did. I made more time for reading, playing my clarinet and happily saying “no” more often.

@Me me Taken with a grain of salt? I don't think so.
There are multitudes of unfortunate people out there who are burdened by narcissistic predators. Narcissists are destructive and do nothing but make the life of others miserable.
It takes an expert like a psychologist to expose these kinds of parasites and help victims identify and recognise their unpleasant behaviour.
Studying psychology is intense and life changing for those whom master this field of science.

Mr Peterson is so right about helping people is the most rewarding experience we can have . I have always felt happy and at peace regarding of the disasters in my life. People ask me how I can feel happy and peaceful , I never realized why. Mr Peterson made it clear for me. Thank you.. I believe what we do stretches far far longer than we realized … if we want the world to be better, everywhere . We must give positive energy , kindness , caring , loving . Spread those things for everybody. We get right back what we give to others.

This has been one of the most helpful interviews I have ever heard. Especially due to the fact that is gives steps to escape your own mind. I have spent all day listening again and again. I have dealt with deep depression and anxiety, and NDE. Living in your own head is where hell exists. Escape.

I have also dealt with chronic depression, and it is real conversations like this one that help me map my anxieties and insecurities and let me know what I need to deal with next. like his wife teasing him over marrying a wimp, and jokes like that being 'funny because they're close to the bone.' If I had to hunt down every sensitivity and insecurity I ever had, I'd have no time for anything else. Thankfully, coming across real conversations randomly, like this one, help when they hit 'close to the bone', saving me all sorts of time. I send thoughts and prayers to you for dealing with your various illnesses. Peace, and have a relaxing day. 😊

@RedEyeOf Jupiter What is the "only" one way to shatter & dismantle "their" hold over everyone exactly? I just wanna see if I reject it or not. I think you said it, but I couldn't tell if that was what you were saying the solution to the "problem" was, or if it was another thing that "they" are doing to everyone so I'm just asking to make sure I understand exactly what you were saying.
