SOLID Comparison. Got the R and the R6 and confirmed that we should be using the R for studio product photography as it is sharper when I looked at your portrait shots.
I have had the R and now shooting with the R5 and R6. I love that the R has the best color all around with out editing. I sometimes find myself missing it when shooting in natural light.
I have the EOS R and have been using that for a few years now. I love it but have some frustrations with it at times. This video has made me realize I think I am good with what I have for now and I should upgrade until I absolutly need to.

WOW! What a great source to evaluate the image quality from these three cameras. The sample images have been indispensable. I’ve spent the better part of a morning comparing the images you so gracefully provided from the R5 and R6 using PS, LRC and printing them as well. Thank you sooo much!!!
The R is a fantastic camera. I love the colors and always had great results, so much so that I struggled when using an R6 or R5 because of the differences. It didn't help that Adobe didn't have camera-matching profiles for the R6 or R5 until relatively recently. The profiles from Color Fidelity helped immensely, but ultimately I switched to Capture One and use the ProStandard camera-matching profiles for superb results.
@@michaelbo143 Yes, although I switched to an R5. But in general, I think the camera profiles in Capture One are superior. I usually just set the ProStandard to be the default color profile for new photos. Lightroom has gotten much better and does have profiles for R6 and R5, but I still prefer using C1.
I did a lot of research when I wanted to upgrade to full frame from my 250D, I’m into Astrophotography and Aviation. I spent many, many hours checking out the specs, reviews, samples and importantly prices. I looked at the 6D, 6Dmkii, 5D mk iv, then all the R range. I kept looking at the R and I’m very glad I went for it. The complaints about it were almost all utter nonsense. Complaints about the Touch Bar are just ridiculous, you can turn it off and it’s really not that bad anyway. Complaints about the autofocus were also seemingly based on personal issues, not the actual camera. Considering the price difference, particularly used, I was torn between the 6D mk ii and the R, went for the R and am VERY happy.
The only complaint I had about the R was that the images had banding/pattern noise in the shadows when lifted (or shot at higher ISOs). The 5D IV - which supposedly had the same sensor - did not have this issue at all so I was a bit let down as I really push and pull files. The 5D IV had the best image quality of any camera I ever shot.
I thought the R looked better than the R5 and R6. All I have is a decade old used Rebel so it was a neat video for me to see three expensive cameras compared with each other at the same time. With the huge price gaps between the three and the R's low MP saving hard drive space, the R would certainly be my first choice.
I love the R. People get too hung up on the touch bar. It's a very good camera. Yes, it's easy to prefer the R5/R6 slightly warmer tones, but which is actually more natural?
It's not so much I didn't like the touch bar, I just missed the joystick. Its true the Rs colours are probably closer to the models natural skin tone. I was impressed with the R all around.
@@JamesReader For me the touch bar seems to be a redundant feature. I'm struggling to find a good use for it. I'd go for a joystick, even though I really like using the touch screen to move the AF point around. I have it assigned to ISO when I'm using an EF lens. Otherwise I'm using the control ring on the RF-lenses for that. Let's wish for an R mk2 with a joystick instead. Regarding skin tones, I'm probably more likely to add warmth to a portrait, than doing the opposite, so for me it's a good thing that the R is a bit on the cold/neutral side.
I love my R and use it as my primary camera. However the better AF and the addition of IBS I will be upgrading to the R5…With the R being my backup/secondary camera
Great video. I was surprised with the color differences between the r5/r6 and r. I'm an old school Canon shooter, so I'm used to that red/magenta cast on skin tones. I preferred the skin tones on the R actually. I have the R6 and loving it, but the R held its own.
Dude. Your b-roll is some of the best on UA-cam. no joke. Really shows your skill set and ups your street credibility big time in my books. Thanks for the great content here. Trying to find a backup body for my R5 and these options are the exact ones I'm comparing. A+ review.
Thanks for the video. As a part-time photographer who does smaller gigs. The EOS R has held up nicely since I purchased it in 2018. I was considering the R6, however with the rumors circulating the web about Canon announcing several bodies this year, I am choosing to wait. Cheers! Thanks again.
I had to come check some more of your videos out because they are SO GOOD! Again, I have all 3 of these cameras although, interestingly, the R (actually RP) was my most recent purchase. Here are my 2 cents. I use the 6 the majority of the time. The images are absolutely gorgeous and I love that my files are manageable sizes. Regardless, I have sold images that have been blown up to HUGE sizes with zero issues. I love the 6 so much that I just sold it and preordered the MK II. Now, the 5 is obviously a beautiful camera and I use this on detail shots and portraits. It is always my “second” camera for special images at events. A lot of times, at weddings, I will have a prime attached to the 5. Now, the R. It was never, ever on my radar. My 19 year old son went to Mt. Everest this year as well as Dubai and Singapore and he wanted to take my 6. I was like “hell no!” So, I went and bought him the “cheap” R to use with my “travel” lens, the 24-105L and sent him on his way. When he returned, I popped his photos into LR and was shocked! He took absolutely stunning images with that little baby. I have blown several up into fairly large prints. I thought his images were so good that I took the same setup plus the tiny nifty fifty to Greece and didn’t regret my much lighter than normal decision in the slightest. Damn good camera. IMO, if you can only afford the R, you will not be disappointed. It is small and mighty. If you are debating between the 6 and 5, get the new 6 coming out. It is more well rounded imo. If you have the cash and want portrait specific or are making money on landscapes, get the 5. The 6 still wins though.
Thank you so much for watching Rachael, and I appreciate such an awesome comment. I've also pre-ordered the MK II, I think Canon knocked it out of the park in terms of releasing an incredibly well rounded camera. People definitely sleep on the R, it's the sweet spot for me in terms of resolution and file size.
Good comparison! I had the EOS R the day it came out and really enjoyed it. I added the R6 the day it was released and kept the eosr as a B cam thinking I would still use it. I ended up selling it a few months ago when I saw I just never picked it up again. love the R6!
thanks for the effort and sharing. i use the EOS for events and headshots and am very pleased. eye AF works better than what i can do with manual focus. in your vid, i definitely saw the color differences between the R, R5 and R6 but never truly noticed when i was post processing my R files. thumbs up.
Thank you for sharing the raw files! I was pretty much stunned how much more REAL the R6 files (both natural light and studio portrait) look compared to the R and R5, both of which look flat in comparison. The R6 portraits have depth and tonal integrity, while the R and R5 look flat and not so real in comparison. The R6 appears to be the closest to how the 5D classic presents people, of course, with so much better low ISO and a lot more. (For a lot more, as well... ; ) You have definitively rearranged my long term camera goals!
Great video, thanks, super helpful. I’m looking for a back up camera to go with my R5 and up until this video I was 90% sure I would go with the R. Having seen your very informative and very well structured/explained video I am now 100% sure I will get a used EOS R. I think it’s unbeatable value at its current used price.
This was such an informative video. I'm so grateful. I always wanted to see the different color renderings from each camera and you presented it so well. I have the EOS R and I personally don't like how it renders color straight from the camera compared to my 1dx and 5d mark 3, but loving that R5 look.
That was excellent to be honest one of the best UA-cam videos I’ve seen here. Especially in terms of video quality looked to me like if it was from a professional campaign. Also liked the content and all the effort you made. 👏👏👏 Thanks buddy
I use the right button of the touch bar to toggle the histogram in the viewfinder. The left button is used to digitally zoom in/out the viewfinder. The bar is toggled on/off with the lock button on top of the camera. My control ring is used for ISO adjustment so it is easy and quick to get the optimum exposure using the histogram and EV bar. I love the ergonomics of the R.
The R crushed it. Especially when you panned out of the portrait you can see the color from the R is way more accurate. I have the R and R5c. Magenta is too strong on R5 and R6. Good stuff.
Interestingly the R is considered less accurate vs the R5 and R6, which have a more clean look. In the end that would be actual better for developing the images afterwards.
I own both, use the R5 as my main for weddings and the R as a runner or if I have a second shooter. Overall the pictures comes out looking very similar when you adjust the magenta balance a bit on either.
Thanks so much James! I love your friendly straight forward presentation and your smart idea of comparing the 3 chosen cameras that should be compared!!!
Loved my R, the reason for the upgrade to a R6 was the R's slow FPS and EVF lag for wildlife and action. For all other genres the R performed really well.
Thank you so much for making this comparison and sharing the raw files! I currently have an EOS R, want a R5, but only really need a R6. You vids helped me make a solid decision on the R6
that's a good point -- did you see how amazing is the image quality of the 50/1.2? - Then you would only need a 24-70/2.8 as a compliment and that's it for portraiture :) :)
For the money, the R is a great camera. it doe lack some of the features of the R6/R5 but if you don't care about those features (mainly IBIS and a second card slot) the R can be a great value. Looking at the comparison at 8:49 there isn't much difference, although I will say that the R5/R6 are slightly (ever so slightly) less grainy, and their images appear a bit more crisp, but this is primarily when zoomed in, and likely not visible from viewing distances. (If you compare the text on the lens, I feel they get progressive sharper from right to left). But again, at around $1800 USD the R is still a capable camera to buy today if you want save some money and can live with its limitations.
This is a very good review. Thank you. The only reason I moved from the EOSR to the R6 is the fps that is too low on the EOS R especially in continuous autofocus. What I regret is the 32 M pixels.... 20 is a bit limited for the R6 and 45 makes too heavy file on the R5..... so I wait for another future alternative....
Thanks for a great comparison. I'm convinced now to keep shooting my EOS R. I'd been considering a move to the R5 of late, but I like the color renderings in the R better. Since that is now settled, I'll go lens shopping instead. 🙂
I have all three bodies and the R image quality is still superb. I prefer the R5 but for other reasons, not just the image quality and they mostly apply to the way I use the cameras.
Thanks, that was a nice video to watch, i have the R now for about two years, mostly for model shoots, and for that kind of photography i see no reason to change to the R6/R5, for wildlife the R is sometimes too slow, so for that a still use my old 1D MKIV, maybe if i hit the jackpot i can go for the R3... ;-)
Nice review. I got my R for $1,200 (USD) back when Canon had the introduction promo. I just got the R6 for a trip to Hawaii. I love both cameras but used them in different ways. I use the R when I know I will be cropping the image and the R6 for fast action and low light situations. Both do an excellent job for Street Photography.
Great review! Shows that the R still holds up well in image quality. So depends on a person's budget which one to get. I appreciate this review for my buying decisions.
Awesome video!!! I have the Canon R , I was thinking of upgrading to the R5 but thanks to your video now I would save the money to buy RF lens instead 😎👍
Great comparison. I have both the R and r the R6. I use both for portrait and wedding work. Most times if I don’t see the camera signature in Lightroom I can not tell the difference. Great video share
Coming from a 5d3 to an R I was annoyed by the lack of wheel and stick control, i still miss them for photography. The other annoying thing is the sensor to switch between lcd and digital view finder, so many times it gets it wrong. However it’s a great camera for the money and I simply can’t justify the gulf in price between r5 or 6. Really nice content by the way 👏👌
@@JIMPMedia I can’t comment too much on low light as I tend to use extra lighting as needed but the af and eye af work very well and way more usable than trying to keep in the shallow depth of fields focal zone when talking to camera etc.
Nice comparison. I’m shooting Sony currently and heavily invested in that system but I can really appreciate how nice Canon cameras are. I agree that their ergonomics are great. Lenses are great too and image quality as well. Maybe someday I’ll be a Canon shooter too but pretty happy for now.
If it doesn’t move fast, like portraits and landscapes the R is fine. I have one. If the subject moves quickly the R6 is another level. I have one. 20 mps in fine because no one but a photographer looks at large prints with a magnifying glass. If you want to make resolution comparisons make three 20x30 prints and get back 8 to 10 ft. and compare them. Then you can see the real world difference.
Great video! I’ve had the R for over 3 years and have the R5 as well. I use both when I need to do video with the R5 and stills with the R. The R still rocks on stills and I’ve never had a bad card issue. That being said I like having the 2 card slot safety net. Canon was cheap and lazy not to have made the R with 2 card slots and I know it really hurt the R’s sales potential for this one reason.
I have never known anyone who has had an SD card failure. I have known a couple who have had CF card failures years ago, but not an SD one. I have heard of SD card failures but once again, no one that have known and can vouch for.
@@markburns993 I agree with you, I’ve never had an SD card failure. That doesn’t change the fact that Canon got lazy on their first full frame competitive mirrorless camera. It lacked basic features that were on the 5D iv and 80D. Like I said, I still use my R for photos and R5 for video at events. But I missed features that were even on my 80D.
I had the R and it was very fun to use and the image quality was Ok if you didn't push/pull files or shoot at really high ISOs. But it was a letdown from my 5D IV which produced much cleaner images and the files were so robust, especially shadow recovery. The R would exhibit shadow banding/pattern noise that the 5D IV never had. Most average people may not notice this but I sure did (and I tried three R copies). I know Tony Northrup showed this exact problem when compared to the 5D IV. I wonder if the R5 and R6 are better in this regard because there seems to be something about mirrorless cameras that causes this problem (I think the on sensor AF might be the problem). I know the Nikon z7 had this issue too when the D850 did not.
Isn't banding appeared with electronic shutter? And dissapears with mechanical? When I saw first RAW files from R series on DXO Photo I recognised more organised groups of pixels colected in lines. It never happend before even on 5DsR. Is it question of Cr3 Raw? It looks similar to jpgs from i.e. Lumia 950XL that I really like but takes absolutely ugly jpgs and only raw files are usefull.
6:44 you have to look very closely to find differences in resolution - no customer would notice the difference! ... about the color rendition: could you get the EOS R to match the EOS R5 colors? - I think that's a much more interesting question than about resolution! - I will download those files and find out for myself! ... thanks for your work!
I used Camera Raw's Super Resolution on the R6 files, then output in Camera Raw to 45 MP. The images when viewed at 100% on a 5K monitor looked better on the R6 than the native R5 files.
I had the R. It took fantastic pictures however the R6 IBIS and AF = many more hits. Very hard to get out of focus images with R6. I would imagine same thing with R5
I recently bought an R. I IMMEDIATELY hated not having a joystick and scroll wheel. I just recently started having the touch and drag functionality and it’s fairly useful surprisingly. The dual card is a bummer but not a dealbreaker
I have disabled the touch bar on my R. There really is no need for it. You can define a corner of the touch screen to use as a joystick - I find it easier and faster to move the focus point like this than with a joystick.
I have the R and R7. For me, corect auto white balance is utmost priority. I do landscape and i never remember what the sand on the beach looked like in New Zealand a year ago or even a month ago. The R has more of an magenta tint than R7 (everyone else says that its the other way around). R7 gives more yellowish (warmer) tint. The R does better with rhe snow shots. My Iphone 11 has a much better auto white balance and i refer to it fir accuracy. Which Canon camera in your opinion has the most consistent and correct auto white balance?
Hi James did you or Do you shoot in C-RAW for stills ? That should bring the file sizes down….. Thanks 😊 Surprised how well he R did in non action stills photography. I’m thinking an extension grip on the R might make handling the big Canon primes easier. Your thoughts ? Great comparison.
Thank you for watching Robert! I've actually never tried C-RAW, is there any noticeable quality loss? I think the grip certainly helps in making the more comfortable to handle.
Wow, the R5 is SO much redder/more magenta. I prefer the skin tones of the R by far to the others, and I feel like the iris has nicer more vibrant colour.
I just upgraded a few months ago to the R6 from the RP. There are some very nice upgrades, but any modern mirrorless will get you some incredible shots. It's just how much work do you want to do with your camera to get it?
For photo only R6 will be more than good enough. In my experience the R6 is one of the most popular Canon cameras among wedding photographers right now.
Makes you wonder if they even developed the R while getting feedback from their customers. Huge blunder for them to move buttons around. AF button placement , lack of scroll wheel and joystick. Don't try to fix something that isn't broken unless you want to break it only to fix it later on. Reminds me of what Apple likes to do.
So the 1DX has 18 mp and it seems to be fine to crop a little. I can’t see why the r6 would lacking if the 1DX does fine, unless you crop way too much. 24 mp is more than enough and has been proven in various models in Sony cameras. The 45 mp has been proven to overkill in sports due the file sizes.
Providing raw file to the audience is a great step which most of the creaters forget. Great work..

Thank you Daniel! Let's hope for an EOS R mark II
Thanks, that was a nice video to watch, i have the R now for about two years, mostly for model shoots, and for that kind of photography i see no reason to change to the R6/R5, for wildlife the R is sometimes too slow, so for that a still use my old 1D MKIV, maybe if i hit the jackpot i can go for the R3... ;-)
Thanks for watching! If I was just doing portrait/landscape photography the would R be more than enough. I hope to try the R3 soon!
Great video! I own both the R5 and R6, but I have always been impressed with the R's image quality.
How good is low light autofocus on R
Excellent review. I found the studio standpoint comparison really useful. Great shots btw.
Thank you!
Thank you for providing us with the files to compare these amazing cameras..
You’re welcome! Hope they helped!
Great review! Shows that the R still holds up well in image quality. So depends on a person's budget which one to get. I appreciate this review for my buying decisions.
Thank you Adrian!
Awesome video!!! I have the Canon R , I was thinking of upgrading to the R5 but thanks to your video now I would save the money to buy RF lens instead 😎👍
Thank you!!
Fantastic comparison - thank you. Still love the output of the original R... Still a solid camera with the 30MP being the sweet spot for me.
Great comparison. I have both the R and r the R6. I use both for portrait and wedding work. Most times if I don’t see the camera signature in Lightroom I can not tell the difference. Great video share
Thank you for watching!
Really nice content by the way 👏👌
Thank you Evlain!
Do you regret selling your 5d3? I'm currently shooting with 5d3 and I want to make the switch to R. I don't have the budget for R6/5
@@JIMPMedia I think I would if I shot more stills but for video i like the R.
@@eviain Autofocus is the biggest reason I want to upgrade especially shooting wide open for video. How's the autofocus in low light and video?
@@JIMPMedia I can’t comment too much on low light as I tend to use extra lighting as needed but the af and eye af work very well and way more usable than trying to keep in the shallow depth of fields focal zone when talking to camera etc.
Thank you again for a very thorough and useful review! 💯💯
Great video, thank you. I ordered an R from MPB today.
Thank you for watching! You’ll love the EOS R
Excellent video!
Thank you Ike!
Hey this was really really well made. Great comparison! I really enjoyed this. Keep this up and you're channel will grow!
Wow, thanks Joshua! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Thank you for watching!
thanks for such an awesome video brother, helped me Alot to decide what camera should I go for. also a big big thanks for raw files.
You’re welcome Ash, glad they helped. Thank you for watching!
Your model is so beautiful!
Great video as usual!
Thank you Matthew!
Well done man! Thank you so much.
Great video! This video convinced me to buy the R6
Thank you Victor! Great choice
Thank you Carolin! I think you’ll find you can match them up quite easily. Let me know how you get on with them!
Did you have any luck? , I've wondered about the best way to do that myself.
@@shadowbreaker sorry, did not do that so far... just didn't try. Won't buy an R5, to be honest.
I used Camera Raw's Super Resolution on the R6 files, then output in Camera Raw to 45 MP. The images when viewed at 100% on a 5K monitor looked better on the R6 than the native R5 files.
Interesting - I’ll have to try this. Thanks for watching!
@@JamesReader Thanks for supplying these images. The fact that you have portrait, landscape, and studio photos is mind blowing.
@@77dris you’re welcome DRIS! Thank you for watching, hope the files help!
thanks for sharing samples!
I had the R. It took fantastic pictures however the R6 IBIS and AF = many more hits. Very hard to get out of focus images with R6. I would imagine same thing with R5
This amazing😍😍😍 I should run a test like this and provide raw files. Thanks for the raw files....
I recently bought an R. I IMMEDIATELY hated not having a joystick and scroll wheel. I just recently started having the touch and drag functionality and it’s fairly useful surprisingly. The dual card is a bummer but not a dealbreaker
Hi James, just left a 👍and a sub. Very good idea to compare resolution of these cams.
Thank you for watching and subscribing Carolin!
Very helpful James, I have the R5 but have been looking for a backup which is currently a 50D !!
Amazing Analysis!! 👏🏻
Thank you Daniel!
Was the whitebalance set to excact same celvin number or did you use auto?
Awesome work!!!
Thank you!
I have disabled the touch bar on my R. There really is no need for it. You can define a corner of the touch screen to use as a joystick - I find it easier and faster to move the focus point like this than with a joystick.
This was an amazing video thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching Chris
I have the R and R7. For me, corect auto white balance is utmost priority. I do landscape and i never remember what the sand on the beach looked like in New Zealand a year ago or even a month ago. The R has more of an magenta tint than R7 (everyone else says that its the other way around). R7 gives more yellowish (warmer) tint. The R does better with rhe snow shots. My Iphone 11 has a much better auto white balance and i refer to it fir accuracy. Which Canon camera in your opinion has the most consistent and correct auto white balance?
Really good review , Way to go
Thank you!
Man, fantastic video!💪
Thank you!
What a video!!!👏👏
Hi James did you or Do you shoot in C-RAW for stills ? That should bring the file sizes down….. Thanks 😊 Surprised how well he R did in non action stills photography. I’m thinking an extension grip on the R might make handling the big Canon primes easier. Your thoughts ? Great comparison.
Thank you for watching Robert! I've actually never tried C-RAW, is there any noticeable quality loss? I think the grip certainly helps in making the more comfortable to handle.
Can we get a high ISO photo where the scene is actually dark? Not many people are shooting 12800 ISO in studio lights.
Wow, the R5 is SO much redder/more magenta. I prefer the skin tones of the R by far to the others, and I feel like the iris has nicer more vibrant colour.
Muchas gracias
@JamesReader Dropbox just rate limited the downloads, currently unaccessable. Can you upload it elsewhere?
Great video Thanks alot !
Thank you Tom!
Which camera are you using for b-roll? Like at 1:33 or 1:41 or 3:45. Gorgeous shous 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you Sid! All shot with the R5, mix of 4k 25fps and 100fps.
Thanks for everything.
Thank you for watching.
thank you for raw files
You’re welcome, I hope they help
I just upgraded a few months ago to the R6 from the RP. There are some very nice upgrades, but any modern mirrorless will get you some incredible shots. It's just how much work do you want to do with your camera to get it?
Completely agree, thanks for watching.
Thanks for the files
No problem, thank you for watching!
EOS R has movie digital stabilization, I don't know why you didnt figure it out!
EOS R always seems to have a green tint compared to the other cameras. Very strange!
It does yeah, mines the same.
I am torn between eos r eos r6mark ii and r6. I do wedding photography and use sony. Which camera do you think I should choose?
For photo only R6 will be more than good enough. In my experience the R6 is one of the most popular Canon cameras among wedding photographers right now.
I produce photos and video clips and I'm not sure if 20 mp is enough, I would be very happy if you help me.
I’m surprised because I liked the EosR almost every time. How was the autofocus compared. Does it have eye Af? And does it hold up.
It does indeed have Eye AF - very quick and accurate. I didn’t test it in very challenging situations but for these styles of portraits it was great.
did the 'R' get firmware updates since new? any new features added?
So the 1DX has 18 mp and it seems to be fine to crop a little. I can’t see why the r6 would lacking if the 1DX does fine, unless you crop way too much. 24 mp is more than enough and has been proven in various models in Sony cameras. The 45 mp has been proven to overkill in sports due the file sizes.
Ich liebe meine EOS R. Der IBIS fehlt tatsächlich in der heutigen Zeit, aber für mich persönlich war es kein KO Kriterium.
The RP is severely underrated
The only negative on the R6 is how it switches from photo to video - I wish there was a dedicated button
