Some people (I won't call them the "p" word here!) are so obsessed with the latest and greatest that they are constantly upgrading to the point that they never truly learn how to use any of their cameras. Think I'll actually spend some time shooting with my R6 rather than updating it! Very happy with it!

That's great to hear. I'm finally upgrading to an R6 today, from my 7D mkii I bought new back in mid-2015. Spending money on good glass usually has a better ROI, but it gets to a point when you need to upgrade the body. 8 years later it's time to upgrade the body 😅

@@StylishIrisman As I'm mainly a photo shooter, I went for a used R6 with about 30k shutter usage. My 7Dmkii has a shutter count easily over 1.5 million (the 7Dmkii is a tank). The R6 mkii only felt like a software update over the R6.
The 7Dmkii metal chassis feels much more solid than the R6's plastic, but Canon plastics have been dependable in the past.
Also, the R8 and R50 are being officially announced over the next 24 hours, so that might bring further price discounts to the R6 (non mkii)

@@BenDunlop Thanks for the insight. Thats crazy shutter count on your 7Dmkii. There's a great offer on the R6 Mk1 new in my camera shop that i'm contemplating - I was thinking either that or the A7IV or A7C. A7IV is much more expensive and the R6 is 2400 with a kit lens.
The only thing stopping me pulling the trigger on the canon is the extremely expensive glass. Are you using EF glass with the R6?

I upgraded to the R6Mii because I do a lot of video work and the quality of life imporvement on the video aspects is what made me upgrade. I also love the ability to just connect my camera as a webcam, using the UVC protocall. I no longer need to use the EOS Webcam utility that seemed never to work for me anyway. This has been a game changer for me and I have only had the camera for about 2 weeks now.

Thanks a lot James for putting all the effort in this one, it's exactly what I was waiting for, excellent! You're the first youtuber with a thorough, full-circle stills / video comparison of these two. Given the R6II's current European price tag, and as I only shoot relatively short videos at only 25p, I'll stay with my R6 for now. The R6II's unlimited recording time, combined with less overheating tendencies, seems the biggest advantage over the base model. I'd expect Canon to finally remove the 30min recording limit on the original R5 and R6 via firmware one day, though.

    Hi James
I mainly shoot stills with occasional video. Ive bitten the bullet and bought the R6 MKII as an upgrade to my R6 and what drove that decision is the following:-
    a. Better battery life
b.Improved AF (I shoot dogs with their owners and like the auto AF feature as well as studio portraits)

You always have THE best camera comparison videos for Canon mirrorless, not even close.
I was thinking about the dynamic range test in the highlights: I and many others have noticed that the R6 II is about 1/3 stop brighter than the R6 and R5. This may account for the difference in highlight dynamic range if both were shot at the same exact settings.
I've never noticed the whirring sound at all. I wonder if you have uncovered the fact that the R6 II may have a fan?
Your R5/R6/R comparison was one of my favourite videos this year and when I upscaled the R6 files to 45 MP I couldn't tell the difference vs the R5 when zoomed to 100% on a 5K monitor, espcially the portraits. With Enhance in ACR the R6 files actually looked better. So that little bit of resolution bump in the R6 II will definitely come in handy.
I will say I really liked the look of the R5 video. It's almost cinematic looking with its tones and it's a bit more magenta. The skin rolloff looked smoother to me too.
After 18 years shooting Canon as a pro, I sold my last cameras (1D III, 5D IV and R) just before the lockdown. I picked up the R6 II on Monday along with the Sigma Art 50 1.4 and wow, what an astounding combination. I was debating between this and the R5 but the $2000 Canadian price difference (plus more when considering media and card readers) was just too much to justify.
I actually got the R6 Mark II for the same price as the now discounted R6! So it was a no brainer! ($3099 cdn, about $2200 us).
    Thanks again for this!
Edit: Do you recommend using in camera noise reduction for video? Or turning it off and doing it in post ?

    • @JamesReader
      @JamesReader  Рік тому +1

Thank you for watching Dris, I really appreciate the kind words. Thanks for letting me know about your R6 MKII's handling of highlights, I was driving my self crazy trying to match the exposure to my R6, at the exact same settings the MKII always seemed to be a little more over exposed. I do thinking the whirring could be a fan, sounds a little similar to my C70.
I owned and loved that Sigma lens for a long time, that's a great combo, glad to hear you are liking your MKII. It feels like Canon has made a really refined camera here.
In terms of in camera noise reduction, for a quick turn around I would leave it on, otherwise I'll do it in post as you usually get better results.
      Thanks again!

@@JamesReader I posted a link to this video in the Canon Digital Photography Forum. I think a lot of people will like this a lot.
I remember when the R5 and R6 came out and people said they were about 1/3 stop dark compared to the R. I think DXO showed they were also over-reporting the ISO vs reality.
So it seems the Mark II has corrected that.
And yes, with your files if I dial down exposure by about 1/3 it seems to match the R6 files (at least in histograms anyway).
Since the Mark II is apparently weather sealed, I wonder where that fan would blow air. Maybe just around inside the case? The battery life is so much better on the Mark II it's funny that there could be a fan inside also that doesn't impact battery. I suspect there will be teardowns coming real soon but you are the first to ever mention it. I will have to put my ear up to mine to see if I notice now.
      Thanks for the NR tip!

Which is the primary reason Canon felt compelled to rush out a Mark ii, I think! The R6 is a great photographers camera, but so many felt it didn't match up in terms of megapixels. 20 is plenty for most people, but they buy into the hype. Not saying that no one needs more, some do, but seriously, is there that much difference between 20 and 24 other than for marketing purposes? If you consistently make huge prints or crop extensively, get an R5.

Now, six months later and the R6 price dropping to $1999 US, there's a $500 difference in cost. It's a close call for me. I don't do much video. It's just not that important to me although it's a nice feature to have. That said, the auto eye detect is nice. The tiny bit more detail in some shots is also nice. It's hard to say if the extra $500 would be worth it in my case. I love nature photography, and I believe both cameras do very well. Would the extra 4 megapixels add better cropping options? Probably, and adding a teleconverter to an R6 would make it the same price as the R6 MkII. What might interest me is how does the rolling shutter compare between the two when photographing fast moving subjects in sports and wildlife?

I have both bodies and noticed the following. R6m2 starts up way faster, almost instant. Tracking is better on the r6m2 with more modes than the r6. 40fps vs 20 great for birds in flight and action. The ability to set fps in silent mode is a welcomed addition, plus setting the shutter sound in silent is great. I think you focused mainly on the 4mp difference for stills vs some of the usability features. There are other things the r6 doesn’t have like dual pixel raw, preshooting buffer, focus stacking done in body, if you use the 600 or 800mm f11 lenses the useable focus area is larger in the r6m2. Think that’s mainly what I’ve found in 3 days of using the mark2. Quite a few differences in the updated body imo.

I shot ballerinas and the focus kept getting confused if there multiple people were on stage. I do like that there seems to be more light gathered on the new sensor and the headshot pics i shot are very sharp in comparison.

I have the R6 and there’s no reason at all for me to “upgrade”. I don’t shoot video at all, and almost all of the improvement with the MkII is in the video Dept. Coming from a 5D MkIII that I used for 10 years, I like the dedicated on/off switch on the left separate from the shutter button. The repurposing of it as a video/stills switch is less than useless to me, it is annoying. The 4mp bump is also meaningless. I like printing my images up to 24x36-ish, and at that size, no one can see a diff even as against a 45 mp print from an R5. The sensor on the R6 is the same one from the 1DX MkIII, which has the best color science of any sensor I’ve seen. As for the other improvements, I don’t find the improved animal eye AF compelling enough to justify ditching the nicest sensor I’ve shot with. The difference in specs concerning dynamic range and low light performance are also approaching zero. Unless you shoot video and wand a better hybrid camera, which the MK II undeniably is, there’s no reason to lose a thousand dollars trading in your R6 and getting a MK II, unless you’re one of those who also gets every single new iPhone as soon as it comes out.

The improvements for photography were aimed at action photography. Faster frame rate for electronic shutter, along with a sensor with faster read outs. Better focusing system, although some appear to be trying the same settings as the original R6. The mk2 is a different system and needs a different set up. Another plus for owners of the RF 600 and 800mm f/11 lenses the focusing area will cover about 90% of the screen.

As a hobbyist R6 user since launch who shoots 100% stills and tends not to crop (definitely not to to 300% - more like 10%) I found the video validated what I thought was the case with a need to change to the R6ii that I should continue to invest in L series RF glass to improve my images. If I was to upgrade it would be the perhaps to the R5 as the stills image difference is more pronounced? I look forward to seeing more of your future content and looking back at your previous videos.

Thank you for the kind words Mark. I think the R5 is the only noticeable "upgrade" you can make on the RF mount from the R6 for photography in terms of pure image quality. Even then the difference really isn't that huge, I have a video comparing the R6 to the R and the R5 and honestly you have to crop significantly to see the benefit, beyond most realistic use cases. One question maybe you can answer (I’ve scoured the manual and online forums)… On R6II, if you are in photo mode and press the quick record button for a video clip, can you have full control of those video settings ? R6 only goes full auto (poorly controlling iso, aperture, SS & only a basic picture profile, no Clog).
I think on the R5 it would use one of the custom settings from C1/C2/C3.. I think C3? So fully customizable/controllable.

I suppose the left hand photo/video flip switch would be ‘almost’ as quick, albeit with using 2 hands 🤔. A simple firmware update on the R6 (I have 2 of those) would have fixed this and I would already be so happy. But no, Canon Cripple Hammer. 😠. Thanks for the quick reply !
