Indeed! I love how Abernathy Sensei focuses on practicality, making sense of what Bruce Lee would call "the fancy mess of martial arts". Most karate dojo in Canada focus on tournaments, so all kata and sparring, fitness being the main focus of each class with very little room left for bunkai. I am a practical guy, not much of a trophy hound so this makes karate way more interesting to me.
excellent clips, I always enjoy your kata applications and your obvious knowledge of kata. Trying the drills in my dojo is always a good end to any session. Many thanks, Ossu!!
was doing this (the first one) takedown in class today and was thinking I needed to get closer and was getting so frustrated! this really cleared things up for me! thanks!
Well demostrated, step by step take down techniques from beginning to end.......I'm definetely going to get the Dvd's very soon.....Without question the best Bunkais that I've ever seen with excellent clarity on the Internet........Osu Mr. Abertheny from Southern California =)
That's the first time I've ever seen anyone show the true meaning of that double downward punch. Until today, I thought you were punching the guy in the stomach with two fists. . Thank you for another insightful video.
finally bunkai/oyo that looks like it will really work---unlike the complicated multi movement (directional) he simply closes with the enemy and destroys the threat kudos
Good video guys actually nice to see someone knows about self defence stuff, most time see ridiculous stuff, have you got any sweep videos as I do sport karate Muay Thai,I like some old school karate sweeps
Does anyone know what Te initial blocking technique is called? I mean the open hand gedan barai and jodan shotei uke (guessing) - is there a formal name for that double block? I've seen it used a lot but not seen a consistent name for it. Cheers in advance!
+Southpaw Moose Indeed you can, if you want to break a knee and get kicked to death by his friends :-) Just because we can do something, does not mean we should.
Jiu jitsu/MMA guy here. Love these takedowns. Very interesting and creative from my point of view. Vicious.

Of course, it's great for movies because it looks dramatic, but the practical application is more satisfying and sensible.

OUTSTANDING!

That bunkai application comes from a template out of Seipai kata.
Oss. Thank you Sensei
The irony is that this was right below a tkd video.
Jujutsu is not the only martial art with takedowns you know.

Looks like bits and pieces from seisan.
Every sensei sensei kyoshi hanshi and symbian has a different way to do unarmed combat self defense with Kara in Shotokan Karate
