Correction: Gems do not boost Multi-hit attacks any more than regular attacks I also forgot to mention Cloysters abuse of Kings Rock. Since each hit of Icicle Spear had the Flinch chance, there was something like a 40% chance to flinch. Very non-epic. I guess I erased that one from my memory
also reminder in generation 5 rock blast's accuracy was increased from 80% to 90% and icicle spear when from 10 to 25 bp, both which made a huge difference
@MountainViews90 With that specdef, the NeverMeltIce damage bonus makes a good shake of sense to me since you're multi-turn invested into shellsmash that they can pivot on.
@MountainViews90 the problem was it wasnt a gimmick. It was genuinely ran in early gen 8 and your can reasonably expect kings rock on cloyster even on high ladder
There's really nothing exponential about the gem with cloyster's multi hit moves. It does apply to every hit, but it's still the usual 1.5x boost, even if it was one big hit it would do the same. If you look at the calcs and just remove the ice gem, the min roll goes from 90% to 60%, as in it loses a 1.5x boost. There's nothing special going on there. It just hits really hard to begin with.
I agree, it was a pretty weird way to phrase it. I guess its just that the 5-hit moves have such an absurd base power that with the gem boost it starts picking up unreasonable KOs. But like you said, there is no specific interaction between gems and multi-hit moves.
Was about to post this. Sadly a couple of years ago, that term was somehow adopted in everyday babbling, and has since lost all meaning. Not it simply means "a lot". Literally.
If we were talking Little Cup, I could believe that there was some weird rounding going on that made multi-hits better, but that's unlikely to matter at level 100.
I think game freak should make models for all shell smash pokemon that shows the pokemon without their shell after they use the move. That way you can sweep someone with a sphere with a horn

Never clicked a video so fast in my life. Shell Smash Cloyster was the first thing that got me hooked on singles in GEN 5 OU. The satisfaction of farming low ELO with two Shell Smashes was peak gaming.
Cloyster has invaded my home. I heard smashing from my closet and opened it to see that the oyster had grown enormous. I tried to run, but could not outpace the Shell Smash-boosted bivalve. I cried “This is insane!” before the Gem-boosted Icicle Spear killed me instantly.
6:02 Skarmory and Forretress were already in Gen 2 though. I guess it's more the sand dominance tipping the scales in their favor over Cloyster with the generation shift.
I used Shell Smash Cloyster in either Gen 6 or 7 Ubers to get the surprise sweep. I even encounter an occasional Shell Smash Torterra in the current meta game.
As somebody now involved in oyster research, this is accurate. I always have to bring an umbrella to protect myself from the numerous icicles barraging the lab.
It should be noted that Cloyster had (or even still has, though I've since stopped playing current gen OU since DLC1's release) a niche in Generation Nine OU on Psychic Terrain hyperoffense teams. The ability to get in with minimal risk of rocks chip due in part to Psyspam's paranoid hazard denial gives Cloyster opportunities to do what Psyspam does best: Click setup, and then kill with buttons. Hell, if you were really insane, pivoting in on the correct physical threat would let you get away with running Expert Belt over a Focus Sash, which enables you to smack the hell out of offensive Kingambit, who otherwise is only 2HKO'd by Drill Run and tends to bully components of Psyspam with its dark typing.
I've always thought about, if you had to create a team of 6 Gen 1 Pokemon, and create an OU team for every single generation with those Pokemon, which Pokemon would you use? Zapdos and Cloyster are the ones that jump out to me first. They have stood the test of time.
This video reminded me of all the stupid and broken glitches and "quirks" that gen 1 mechanics had. Thank god we didn't have to deal with that for long
However, as the franchise has progressed with mechanical changes and new installments, as well as new pokemon releasing to outclass Cloyster, its value as a defensive utility pokemon dwindled, and it's viability suffered.
When I first saw Shell Smash Cloyster, I faced one in a 3v3 Wifi match bringing my CroCune Suicune. It managed to 2HKO it. It was then I realized, Cloyster is not what it once was.
Never played competitive, but i played against friends a lot during gen 1. I remember discovering how good it was against my friends. They all hated my Cloyster.

Ironically, the higher end of power Z moves buff less than the lower power moves. So Gems in those moves actually deal more damage than Z moves. Game design.
shell smash imo is one of the cheapest moves in the game essentially 2 dragon dances, or the offensive benefits of geomancy, in one turn and the negative impacts can be cleared with the right held item its cheap as hell especially on a mon like polteageist

I do wish that type gems would return but reworked Taking Arceus plates but sacrifice consistent damage increase for a 1 turn damage increase that is a higher boost than Arceus plates (but I do acknowledge that some Pokémon would still get use if Type Gems just gave the same boost as Arceus Plates but was consumed after use)
I get that after torterra smashes its shell maybe it can go on a mad rampage. What does cloyster do exactly? Once the shell is smashed it's basically just a little black blob
Well you see, Cloyster is a Gastly in shell armour, so once it has been smashed, you're left with a Gastly poltergeisting the spikes and shards to fling at the opponents! ...Either that, or maybe it just smashes the outer purple/blue shell and leaves the inner grey one. Then it can scoot over and shank people with the long horn
Cloyster in gen 5 can even run special sets / mix because of shell smash. Also in gen 1 cloyster can trap a mon if used hpbeam and is slower than cloyster bc of clamp
