I'm sure this will be a reasonable comments section. Filled with opinions from people who have actually seen the film as opposed to preconceived ideas...
I’m shocked that Kermode didn’t see any major flaws with this film cause I believe there are many. I thought the best part about it was the villain. He was well developed and had a convincing motivation, but I thought the main character Black Panther wasn’t so great. I actually liked him more in Civil war when we didn’t know much about his suit and powers. He was more mysterious and then we find out that the black panther can be anyone. All you have to do to be the black panther is to be a skilled fighter and then eat a special plant which will make you stronger and more skilled with an over powered suit. I think the suit shouldn’t be so overpowered because when he fights I don’t believe he’s in any real danger, especially when bullets are bouncing off him. This is also why I’m not a huge fan of superman.
Bored of the 'bored of super hero movies' comments. No, you are bored of BAD or bland super hero movies. Movies such as this and Logan show you can make an engaging, character-driven story about a 'superhero' without it having to tick certain boxes and feel empty, and if they could of be all of that quality and have flawed and interesting characters then bring it on.
DA87i I'm not a fan of everybody (in this case the main characters) dies as the end, endings. Logan was a good movie but miserable too. Patrick Stewart's acting broght back memories of my father as the end something I didn't need.
This is great. I enjoy Mark's reviews, he covers all sorts of different aspects of movies. The DoP's work, the sound design, performances and direction. Just really thorough and informative.
I think it's still weird. No one has seen the movie. This is all way over the top nonsense about the state of reviews in general. Plus a smattering of " I'm sick of superhero movies " Maybe Black Panther just is a good movie?

A fine review. I went to see the film with low expectations and was thoroughly impressed by the whole experience. Everybody in the movie was superb. Mark was totally accurate in his observations. Easily the best Marvel film since "The Winter Soldier".

If he doesn't usually feel engaged by the climatic confrontations but did for this one then when I get to the big punchup I'll be in danger of my heart bursting through my chest.
I found it quite boring if I'm being honest. His powers were really underwhelming. Also is T'Challa's sister the only person in the entire country who is one of the scientists working with Vibranium? Felt weird.
Whilst the film was good. Isn't it a bit remiss to not acknowledge Wesley Snipes contribution to the Marvel Universe, long before the late, lamented Chadwick Boseman?
Kermode must be pretty baffled with some of the comments here that are too immersed in these Internet-isms - "PC", "goy", "Kuck" and all that. Are these commenters seriously thinking a middle-aged BBC guy would get / felt all words these hurled at him?
jakmanxyom The sad thing is, a lot of middle aged and elderly men have adopted this lingo now. There are grandpas on facebook literally right now shitposting about soyboys and white genocide.
The funny and good thing is Kermode never bothers with stupid comments sections, especially on UA-cam. The only comments he reads are from the BBC blog for the Kermode Uncut videos where he asks viewers a question.
couldn't understand this film's appeal and ratings at all. i found the cgi terrible, especially near the end. his powers are rather meh. thought basically all of the characters were straight up annoying, the villain was ok, but i still don't see why people say it's an amazing villain. the story was very one dimensional. i got sick of people telling me, it deserves to be well received because it's the first black superhero...... as if they hadn't seen the blade films that came out in the 90's. finished the film, didn't think it was terrible, but the hype surrounding it really ruined it for me. also, hated the majority of the soundtrack, even though i like some of kendrick lamar's music. just wish he didn't butcher the revolution will not be televised by gil scott heron. the fact this was oscar nominated is an absolute joke.
Loved the movie and loved killmongore. Probably the most complex villain so far, second place being Zemo. His rage and hatred was well placed and while it was preachy to me at times it never felt forced. His scene with his dad was full of great acting in that you could see the subtext in there words and tears. His rage wasn’t just a hate the whites but hate those that made us suffer and those that turned a blind eye. It was clear that Wakanda wasn’t just an African country but a single self valuing country who does see itself as better. Some Wakandans are likely just as racist as people in the outside world. And being honest, Black panthers beat down was amazing. I love black panther and he’s my favorite marvel hero but seeing someone who had put his all into being a true killing machine show how far he had gone on his own was amazing and brutally spectacular.
The 2nd half of the 1st act was a copy and past of James Bond with the Q gadgets scene the finding the baddie in a casino the car chase with the gadget laden cars.
If I may be political for a moment one of my pet peeves on TV and in cinema is the 'palette swapping' of characters from White to black etc. Sometimes it can work but most of the time it always feels like a 'political' decision rather than an artistic one, Think Idris Elba in the recent Dark Tower movie. THIS is so what we need more of, real representation. Black Panther, Moonlight, Jon Boyega in the new Star Wars and smaller films like Mudbound getting attention. Much better than shoehorning People of colour into white roles and saying "there's your representation, happy now?" If more films like this are released and are successful then it feels like a much better alternative. Also yes I'm aware of the stupidity of discussing politics on youtube. Nice review Mark, I'll be attending next week.
Roland Deschain (the gunslinger) was meant to be equivalent to an Arthurian knight of the round table, he's stated to be white many times throughout the books.
Michael B. Jordan gives a greatperformance that not only steals the movie, but transcends the comic book genre in a similar vein to Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight.
6:43 on - exactly the criteria to get why you will like or not like a movie. I myself am going to this, because I believe it will adhere to those criteria. Also because FUN. Remember fun? Before people got into being nit-picky and mock-outraged on the internet, and doing a movie down because they didn't like it or the studio behind it? Obviously those Tomato-heads with their idiot agenda don't.....
The story was mediocre, the action cool, but most importantly, i cared about tchalla. So its a good movie, i guess. Though the portrayal of wakanda and it culture was kinda ridiculous.
all i needed to know was that it works as a movie as a comic fan i will judge that when it comes i'm hoping its not going to be like thor ragnarok where it works as a movie but not as a comic adaption
I have an important question,(without spoiling *anything*) can someone who has seen the movie please help me with this. I have a friend who got really terrified by the Suicide Squads scene where harley quinn gets tortured. He is kinda afraid to go to this film so is there in any way anything shocking or disturbing or scary scene in this movie??
This is without question THE most overrated MCU film. It was ok, but it was nothing spectacular. The script/story just wasn’t that great. Typical super hero film which is fine, but this film doesn’t deserve the praise/Oscar nom it got. Representation in films isn’t a bad thing as long as it not artificially inserted into the film to appease. They couldn’t do that with Black Panther. There had to be black people in this movie, but I think people praised the racial representation in this movie so much to the point where it blinded them to the basic meh superhero story that was being told. IMO it was nothing special. Praise it for the racial representation all you want. That doesn’t speak to the film/story that was told. I didn’t watch a film/story that was groundbreaking/revolutionary in any way. It was ur typical Marvel film to me. Nothing special but nothing bad either. Doesn’t live up to the hype.
felt the same way. I only watched it once and I'm no fan but it appears what this movie has achieved is unprecedented. Whether this film had an meh screenplay is arguable but if anything this film has made producers more confident in financing racially diverse Films.
Agree. Interestingly, Shang Chi received the same praise ... except in China, where it didnt get a cinema release. My Chinese friends who have since seen it (I used to live in China) all hated it.
"It's good to look at'' more like he is beating about the Bush and not saying to movie itself is bland and not put himself in trouble. When a person says something is good to look at means the thing is not good but good to look at
I thought a memo had gone out that anyone caught using the word 'snowflake' as an unironic insult would be held in as much contempt as if they'd been caught Dabbing/watching a Paul brothers video! Will these 1st world problems never cease?!
the problem with this film was that it was 2 reasonably good stories that couldn't coexist and made one very mediocre film when those two stories were attempted to be mashed together. I classify those two stories as the social commentary elements and the real world stuff and then the second story was the classic superhero origin movie. the ideas were ok on their own, quite good, but just got cut down and hurt by the two stories attempting to fit in together.
welllll yaknow, it was fine, i liked the characters, the plot was mediocre and the CGI was iffy because it was made in so little time. Didn't desereve as much praise as it got.
"Anyone remembers Blade?" Yes, we remember Blade. "I'm sick of superhero movies." People say that like those are the only movies available in cinema today, you can always choose to watch horror/comedy/animated disney films or the occasional oscar bait movies.
This film was amazing. It looks beautiful and it's got more going on under the hood that most superhero films. If anything it is at it's least interesting in it's most traditionally superhero film moments. It poses some big questions and doesn't offer up easy answers. Also, Shuri is awesome. This film deserves to be seen.
For real? He compliments the visuals, the performances, the music, the sound design, and finally stresses how he actually cared about the characters to a point where he could follow the action climax for once. I'd say that's a 4/10.
It sounds weird, but stuff like the sound editing is usually a red flag for me. If it's a good movie, I don't generally list "sound editing" in, like, the top three things I like about it.
"There is absolutely gender equality." 5 seconds later "The all female special forces are sharper and tougher than their male adversaries." Hmm I'm going to need to look up the definition of equal because I thought it meant the state of being the same
Fighting Irish Easy mistake to make man, you see the first bit refers to the Wakandan soldiers, who have gender equality, and then he said that they’re stronger than their male adversaries, that means their enemies. Just send me a message if you have any more trouble understanding basic sentence structure ;)
No sorry dude I'm right, you're wrong. It's not really Kermode's fault in fairness. It's just part of the general sense of brainwashing that is going on in our culture, in which we can no longer grasp the basic meaning of words and how to use them correctly. I can teach you further but only for a tutor's fee of course, if you'd like.
Fighting Irish lol, you sound extremely regular. “The SJWs are coming for our syntax!?” I wonder what it is about this movie in particular that has filled you with such cultural paranoia...
I never said anything about SJW's or even referred to the movie though did I? All I used were Kermode's own words. Looks like you really do need tutelage mate. You're jumping the gun inferring things i never said. Swamp Brain. Oh the irony lol. Is it a real disorder you have?
Fighting Irish Ah man it’s just this dreadful debilitating curse to be able hear the words “gender equality” and then hear that a certain female force are stronger than a male one and not sperge out in the comments about it.
Movie was average at best just like most of MCU films, except The Winter Soldier! This film does not come close to superhero films like The Dark Knight or Logan!
The representation in this movie is great to see and all, but I'm just beyond sick of Marvel and superhero movies in general - especially these formulaic, cookie cutter ones. The trailer is people fighting, punching each other, a guy jumping really high, stuff being shot and high-speed chases with cars tumbling. Literally like every other Marvel movie trailer.
Most reviews are saying that this film is certainly *not* cookie-cutter or formulaic. Maybe not judge a film by the trailer? They usually only advertise the spectacle anyway, and I’ve heard that this film has more character and story than action.
Marvel movies have become boring and absolutely forgettable to me, no movie came come to Winter Soldier, but I have to admit that reading and seeing all these reviews got me excited, besides I trust Ryan Coogler, I have hopes that Marvel let him put his vision on screen.
The have been 17 MCU films with white male leads and most of them have a 90 percent white cast. When one movie gets made with a 90 percent black cast, white people want to complain about diversity. 😒😔 Such Hypocrites.
Almost every movie has lots of CGI in it these days. Most of them you can't even notice the CGI. To judge the quality of a movie on the amount of CGI is just dumb though.
Interesting video, but not an appropriate example. First, CGI is great for inanimate objects (trees, buildings, garbage, etc.), less so for reproducing live characters or action sequences. Second, in Mindhunter, the CGI was very subtle and used to enhance the background and setting of a scene, nothing to do with how CGI is used in a blockbuster movie.
Please don’t go into the comments. It’s too late for me, save yourselves!
This review felt very thorough, detailed on what worked for you about Black Panther, and never gave spoilers. Very thoughtful. Thank you Mark!

Feels like Kermode being very generous (read: careful) with his words here...
He gave an honest review I do think it stands on its own. One of the better mcu movies.
Pick me off the floor.....Mark actually had nothing bad to say about a movie......i love this movie so much

What?! This is just about as bland as you can get in super hero movies.
The storyline was very weak. The final CGI monstrosity of a fight completely took me out of the film.
This is great. I enjoy Mark's reviews, he covers all sorts of different aspects of movies. The DoP's work, the sound design, performances and direction. Just really thorough and informative.
Spectacle for the reason of spectacle is the reason I gave up on Dr Who.
What a bizarre comments section.
Hardly anything about the actual movie.
I think it's still weird.
No one has seen the movie.
This is all way over the top nonsense about the state of reviews in general.
Plus a smattering of " I'm sick of superhero movies "
Maybe Black Panther just is a good movie?
I wonder what it is about THIS particular movie that so many internet trolls seem to be angry about. Hmmmmmm
Well that's still a different issue.
Which is kinda the point.
But in this case, what you call " good intentions " or not.. was all in the comic.
Gern Wind Some very odd thoughts in that post.

Kermode ends that review with a Molly Bloom "YES"
Film was fun but was nothing new and had a very generic story. SFX are good apart from the last fight, that looked really bad.
A fine review.
I went to see the film with low expectations and was thoroughly
impressed by the whole experience.
Everybody in the movie was superb.
Mark was totally accurate in his observations.
Easily the best Marvel film since "The Winter Soldier".
And the answer is...no. Mark I think you're being kind here. Sadly I found it boring, hard to follow and un-engaging. Apart from a mid point round about when Andy Serkis gets involved and there's some much needed humour injected by various characters it slumps and fell flat again for me. Even the special effects are not quite up there with the best...a dissapointment for me that left me cold.
The answer is... Yes!
The characters were great, the story was so-so.
If he doesn't usually feel engaged by the climatic confrontations but did for this one then when I get to the big punchup I'll be in danger of my heart bursting through my chest.
I really trust Mr. Kermode. So it's a really good movie.
ballard ballard What?!😲
Chrome Fantasia he's calling people Who liked it "cuckolds"
It really isn't.

the story was very one dimensional.
i got sick of people telling me, it deserves to be well received because it's the first black superhero...... as if they hadn't seen the blade films that came out in the 90's.
finished the film, didn't think it was terrible, but the hype surrounding it really ruined it for me.
also, hated the majority of the soundtrack, even though i like some of kendrick lamar's music. just wish he didn't butcher the revolution will not be televised by gil scott heron.
the fact this was oscar nominated is an absolute joke.

Actually we pay to see the movie so you are wrong there.
funny cuz warner bros owns both rotten tomato and DC
Why don't you tell DC to pay you too?
These meta comments are cancer.
Or, "paid by Disney". 😏
A film about stolen vibrators??? To what end?

John Boyega's Finn is an absolute waste of space in Star Wars.

"Black Panther" is very good movie... But nowhere near a great one.
I still can't tell if he actualy really likes it he basicaly only said that everything makes sense and you understand whats going on

I don't care about comic movies or universes then why are you talking

"Rotten Too-Mah-Toes" - Mark Kermode
If the SJW crowd and its agenda hadn't become such a huge irritation over the past couple of years, everyone would just sit down and enjoy the movie.
Marvel movies have become boring and absolutely forgettable to me, no movie came come to Winter Soldier, but I have to admit that reading and seeing all these reviews got me excited, besides I trust Ryan Coogler, I have hopes that Marvel let him put his vision on screen.

Such a predictable plot and story saved by great acting and design choices... If it weren't for those it'd be another Thor: Dark World
The movie seriously lacks diversity. It's basically all black people smh.
The have been 17 MCU films with white male leads and most of them have a 90 percent white cast. When one movie gets made with a 90 percent black cast, white people want to complain about diversity. 😒😔 Such Hypocrites.
In the spirit of black culture i'll steal the movie of the interwebs.
Looks like a generic Marvel film to me *shrugs.*
great i'll go watch it then
I know right.
another CGI fest no doubt, the new comic book is CGI......some love it some dont.
Almost every movie has lots of CGI in it these days. Most of them you can't even notice the CGI. To judge the quality of a movie on the amount of CGI is just dumb though.
Coss get with the program its 2018
Here's an example of how much CGI you don't notice. ua-cam.com/video/Di4Byf1EzRE/v-deo.html
