Its better to have someone with a consistent plan than a jumbled mess. Yes there's a problem associated with having an Overlord with a connected universe, but what's the alternative?
I watched this for the first time last night and I was stunned by how bad it was. The idea that superman saving the world from an interstellar tyrant showed that he needed to be put in check was silly; the Africa mess made no sense (why would superman be blamed for people being shot?); the dream sequences (or was it time travel?) were ludicrous; batman in particular showed a flagrant disregard for human life in the chase sequence; the two central characters, who are both supposed to be geniuses never bothered to talk to each other - I mean if supes had said "Lex luthor set this up and he's just thrown Lois Lane off a skyscraper and kidnapped my mom" then the entire fight could have been avoided; batman's tactics were ridiculous; Doomsday comes out of nowhere; Lex was absolutely the most irritating character since Jar Jar Binks and his entire plotline was a series of handwavings - he knows about all the enhanced people, he gets access to the alien ship by wearing Zod's fingerprints, seriously?; The entire film was dark and miserable and incoherent. The only bits I liked were the ones with WW, which reminded me of a good film and a great character.
I'm getting really sick of anyone who defends the film, especially Zack Snyder, trot out the line "it's for the fans" Well no, it isn't. A film made for the fans would have represented the main characters in a way that' acknowledges the source material. Having both Batman AND Superman kill multiple people throughout the film shows that Snyder doesn't understand these characters, or the source material, at all.
+David Prichard He was good in my opinion, but his last scene in the film was so bad and over acted it wiped away all the good work he did throughout the film.
Mark is on point with his criticisms, but forgets to mention arguably the biggest one which is that both Barman and Supernan kill a bunch of people lol.
It's just a joyless, moment-less slogfest that brings no surprises. I saw it this morning and at no point point did I think 'this is bad...' but definitely at no point were I or any of the audience that I saw it with gasping at the spectacle it should have been. Just.. soulless. And such a shame.
Ben Affleck and the guy that played Alfred are by far the best parts of the movie. He's now got my money for when it comes to his standalone Batman movie.
Just seen it and have been waiting for Mark's review. He's 100% right with everything he says. The film was a horrible mess and actually a regression from Man of Steel which had many merits it just misunderstood what the character Superman should be. BVS commits this sin again and again. It's such a bad treatment of the DC universe and fans and audiences deserved better.
+pooplop he probably didnt like the movie, and was trying to not let it show. as a director, i highly doubt he would find this movie any good. it really is a technical mess.
Saw this at a midnight screening last night. It pains me to say that I was disappointed; there was a lot of potential for this to be really good but at almost every turn that potential was squandered by Snyder. The first act is so jumbled that I just couldn't get into it. Also, without spoiling it, I never felt any proper tension between Wayne and Kent. Moreover, for a film that's way over 2 hours long, there's surprisingly little character development. I feel bad sort of piling on Jesse Eisenberg but I found him incredibly annoying and not scary at all. :)
He really hit the point for me. The plot points really go all over the place. Also what I left thinking was - "I still don't know how I feel about Ben Affleck as Bruce. It was a 2.5 hr movie, but I still feel like I don't really know anything about him." There isn't a lot of character development for anyone, really. The fight scenes were super awesome. I loved when Batman beat up those henchman/thug people, so freaking brutal and Batman is MASSIVE! His blows were so impactful and incredible, I was really taken back by that. But the story really suffers. SEMI SPOILER COMING UP......... - In one of his first dreams, it shows Batman using guns and shooting people, but I had no idea this was some kind of dream until he woke up from it. Even then wtf was the point of it? Also at some points it looked like he actually got intel from his dreams that he used in the real world. I can't remember the exact scene anymore, though. Idk, I got confused from time to time, also some scenes were very dark and hard to see, some parts were hard to hear properly and understand, then the whole end fight was a CGI orgy. I remember suddenly Wonder Woman had her lasso onto the enemy and I was thinking "Where did that come from? When did it get pulled out? Okay... I guess we're going with suddenly the bad guy got caught off screen sometime ago? Or I missed it in the tidal waves of CGI?"
The desert sequence is a premonition that is shown to Bruce by the Flash. Its setting up the Justice League film. As for the mercs with the S on their shoulders look up Injustice :D
I'd like to see you review this again, now that's it's been a few years. I notice something new and really good parallels with Man of Steel everytime I watch it. Watch the Ultimate Cut. It's so much better than the theatrical cut.
I deliberately didn't listen to this yesterday because I wanted to go in without any preconceived notions on what I was about to see. A bit odd to hear Kermode say pretty much the exact same things I was saying to my partner as we walked home from the cinema.
+Mark H watchmen was fantastic and literally ripped from the page of the comic with beautiful action scenes and choreography. I ask of you top list your grievances
+Mark H I havent read the comics so I was coming to the movie without any baggage. I thought it was a superb and gripping superhero film. It is the only work of Zack Snyder I genuinely admire.
Mark H That may be true and it also might explain why a mediocre director was able to create such masterpiece. I must say, I enjoyed philosophy of the piece greatly, which supports your notion, that the original material really made this movie.
Mark H this is the most idiotic statement ever do you even know what a director does he set up.shots, created continuity, composed the action scenes, had to get the best out of his actors and also storyboard the film dont comment on an occupation you dont understand. You have no idea what it takes to be a director
+Grainne Mhaol you should see The Double and Night Moves he gives pretty solid performances in those movies, i would blame Snyder for taking the character of Lex Luthor to the zuckerberg direction.
It's what Snyder does. It's all flash and no substance. The only good fight is the warehouse and what the hell was up with Batman? He was trying to kill Superman and then after hearing that one name he stops and suddenly becomes a good guy again? Without anymore explanation? Also the dream sequences are unnecessary. One would be enough and the whole desert one doesn't make any sense at all.
So Eisenberg is highly annoying? What's new, he's unwatchable in everything he does. I suspect Ben Affleck is extremely embarrassed by the final product.
I haven't seen any indication of that. A big clue towards it is how none of the cast are coming out and saying that the studio screwed them over and that the Ultimate edition is better.
I feel bad for Chris Terrio, he's a great writer who had to try and fix a script written by that humourless hack David S Goyer. Hopefully this doesn't stop him from being able to write more films like Argo, and maybe WB's might actually let him write the whole Justice League movie, instead of having him attempt a clean up.

I never read the graphic novel and I was blown away by that story, characterisation and style of that film. I think I have seen it 5 times by now and really look forward to the sequel..
I loved the twist in the ending and I knew nothing about the Alan Moore novel, so I thought Zack told "that" story extremely well. I would rank Watchmen in my top 10 favourite films,,,but I have seen film versions of novels I have loved and did come away dissapointed so I see all the above points
+john leto surely dawn of the dead is his best work. Not just taking a graphic novel and putting it on screen but making a very enjoyable zombie movie is surely more of an achievement.
Man of Steel is underrated by some. It's actually a fine movie which in my opinion sets up the final conflict extremely well. The Superman vs Zod sequence is suitably visualised on a grand scale. These were two extremely powerful beings so the destruction caused by their duel was more than justified. As far and Batman vs Superman... well I will see it with an open mind, despite some of the things I've read.
1st thanks for the critic. after the huge disappointment with the man of steel i just skip this one.. 2nd what is with that coffee cup? 3rd the other guy... his lack of care is off scale!
Revisiting this review in 2017... I wanted BvS to succeed but having seen it on the opening weekend agree with all of Kermode's criticisms. He is spot on with every point - above all it was so incoherent
the sad thing about eisenberg is that, there's a snip of that movie, in wich he is more lex luthor, than in this entire movie. i still think he was miscast, but that snip gave me the impression that he could be something interesting... not the case im afraid.
Lol @ how often Mark picks up his coffee cup and, for no reason, puts it down again a few inches away, and then, a little while later, moves it back again for no reason. Legendary cup manoeuvring :)
I really have to agree with mark. there was TOO much crammed into the run time. the visions and dreams were odd and had me thinking .. what the hell? i didn't like jesse esienberg, woefully miscast. didn't care for wonder woman, looked like she'd barged her way into the movie. no need for her. it was a set up for another movie with loads of other heroes. HOWEVER.. Ben Afflek is SUPERB as batman,. better than Bale. And the Batman scenes were brilliant. excellent fighting. Better choreography than the Nolan series.. And I loved the Nolan series! despite is myrad of flaws, and the fact it could be at least 30 mins shorter , I liked it.
Nolan walked away from the project soon as TDKR was done. He pretty much was only a producer of MoS I think? Not sure if he had any involvement in BvS, but it could be fact checked.
As always, Kermode gives a reasoned and accurate review. Crushing disappointment is all I felt when I walked out of the cinema. It's Phantom Menace bad.
+Liverbird I defended Phantom Menace for years. It's only when I got over my fandom of Star Wars that I could see clearly. You'll come around. Try not to be too hard on yourself when you do. I so badly wanted this to be good but I'm not going to deny a film is objectively bad no matter how much I love DC
+haniputani the similarity lies in the people that defend it willfully ignoring how bad it is. A couple of years down the road, these apologists will come around.
Why does WB keep hiring Zack Snyder? I really don't understand that. He is not that bad but he does not have enough skillsets to direct franchises this large. I enjoyed Man of Steel but didn't like Batman Vs Superman.
As a longtime fan of Mark and someone who genuinely enjoyed the film, I think this review is wonderful. It's not condescending, it's not a spurt of angry critique; it's simply honest and fair. I may not agree with him, but I certainly respect his opinion and the level of decency and courtesy he gave to those who liked it.
stranger1876 Like Old Luke saying that he'll teach Rey three lessons but not showing the third one until probably Episode 9, we'll never know that for sure. Unless he decides to review the UE version, which I highly doubt he will.
I really enjoyed it and my to my surprise Ben Affleck is fantastic, so much so that I want him to get his own movie more than I even want a Justice League film. Even though Batman is human in the comics he hangs around with Superhumans and it's hard to translate how that works in real life but I think Snyder actually got that element down, you can see how people find it hard to believe Batman is just a man, especially with that scene when he's hiding in the corner and the big rescue fight scene. I can see the problems, especially with Luthor's character and the dreams which in the end seem to be premonitions even though we don't know why Batman knows what's coming, still I liked it. More please.
I think what didn't help the movie was the fact that it was being hyped for 2 and a bit years so everyone had preconceived expectations that it was going to be the best superhero movie, but if it wasn't as hyped as it was it probably would've got above average reviews. But I completely agree with Mark and although Eisenberg wasn't the best Lex Luthor but he tried to experiment and some people liked it, others didn't.
Before they make another movie DC need to find a competent world renowned director that can actually make the live action adaptation these comics deserve
To be fair, I've only seen the ultimate edition which makes a lot more sense that the theatrical version appears to. But even then, they've essentially removed the soul of the characters and attempted to replace it with wishy-washy philosophical pretensions and a convoluted plotline. The scene sequencing is far too jumpy too. I agree with Kermode in that the action sequences are so OTT that they're just boring. That said, I still enjoyed large parts of this and thought Affleck in particular was great. But mostly it just reminded me that there's never going to be another superhero film like the 1978 Superman.
I actually really liked this film and do think there is depth to it. However my knowledge of these characters may subconsciously feeling in story gaps. I do think the cut 37 minutes of the film hurts its story telling and may have made the film incomprehensible to none DC readers. I wonder if the Directors Cut gets praise as fixing most of these issues if Kermode would be willing to watch the film again. It may give us a really good Kermode Uncut on both Directors cuts and second viewings (which Mark is fan of talking about).
Mark is the only critic opinion that I truly trust and respect. I think he generally reviews films solely based on his own opinions rather than following the thoughts of the crowd. I'm sorry he didn't care for the film, but I think he's right about the fans. I assume that they, like myself, will see enough done right to forgive some of the film's faults. I loved the movie from start to finish. 8/10 from a fan.
I like the movie and I agree on some of the points Mark made to an extent. However, the theatrical cut is not the one Zack intended, while the 3 hour ultimate cut is. I hope that Mark can give it another shot and review the 3 hour cut.
Bricking Bad He would still give it a thumbs down even if he's forced to watch the director's cut. He's not a fan of Zack Snyder's works and he probably will never be.
I guess many of the people who liked this movie just didn't care if movie is coherent. They decided to feel content with watching 2 hour video clip on the big screen. The trick to survive in this escapism entertainment is to constantly be eager to lower your expectations.
I thought Gal Gadot was alongside Affleck's Batman as one of the better things of the movie. Very sassy and well/suited for the role! Looking forward to more of her in the Wonderwoman movie.
the problem with Snyder is he's more style over substance....he can set up some really good shots ...none of his films look terrible...but they lack coherent storytelling and go in 27 million different directions
100% right His criticism is to be respected, he tells it like it is! I attended the screening of BvS a couple of times, and Man of Steel is a better movie
Goddammit, Mark is such a fantastic critic. You can always rely on him to sidestep the exhausting hyperbole of modern day critics and to actually offer a thoughtful and nuanced review.

Lost count how many times Mark moves that cup
11 times I believe.
It's a body language thing. When he is being most negative he moves the cup further away.... I guess.
+Ben Carter Its symbolic for how scattered he felt the plot of the film was.
Mark could not have explained my feelings any better. This is exactly how I felt with Batman vs. Superman.

good. anyone over the age of about 14 who is excited by the prospect of a movie called 'batman vs superman' deserves to be sorely disappointed imo.
1st thanks for the critic. after the huge disappointment with the man of steel i just skip this one..
2nd what is with that coffee cup?
3rd the other guy... his lack of care is off scale!
As a whole, this film was a crime
Revisiting this review in 2017...
I wanted BvS to succeed but having seen it on the opening weekend agree with all of Kermode's criticisms. He is spot on with every point - above all it was so incoherent
Completely Agree with everything he said.
For a second there I thought Mark called it a turd
You're the greatest Mark. Don't ever change.
APPLEtoFEAR n
the sad thing about eisenberg is that, there's a snip of that movie, in wich he is more lex luthor, than in this entire movie.
i still think he was miscast, but that snip gave me the impression that he could be something interesting... not the case im afraid.
I Believe In Alex Luthor
Love you guys!!!
First time i leave the first coment!!
From swedish fan!!!!
Why didn't the studio just get Nolan to write/direct?
He's busy with his own stuff.
Nolan walked away from the project soon as TDKR was done. He pretty much was only a producer of MoS I think? Not sure if he had any involvement in BvS, but it could be fact checked.
Jacob Kwiatkowski He and Emma Thomas are still the executive producers.
+Liverbird I can appreciate your point of view but we deserve better than just OK. Happy you enjoyed it though. Nobody wants a bad time at the cinema
+Leo Stiles How explain why its Phantom Menace bad, where are the similarities between BVS and The phantom menace.
***** You are right.
Is anyone disappointed that Mark didn't do his "Zack Snyder" voice? 😄
Great Review, very similar views to my own, but my Gosh! How many times did Mark move his mug in that whole review??? I lost count!
Mark said the movie was trying to do 3 things,
1. setup the DCEU universe;
2. setup the conflict between batman and superman.
What's the 3rd thing?
stranger1876 Like Old Luke saying that he'll teach Rey three lessons but not showing the third one until probably Episode 9, we'll never know that for sure. Unless he decides to review the UE version, which I highly doubt he will.
Mark's not mad, just disappointed
More please.
absolutely brilliant review
I hope they fire Zack Snyder. They can't let him direct Justice league.
+r200h These actors and superhero needs a better director. I am hoping for George Miller, who was close to direct Man Of Steel 2.
+karma delivery I think the real challenge is getting to one before Marvel does
Finally, a short but well founded review.
Hey Warner, stay away from Snyder as this is what should be expected from him.
Can't wait to see it. Many critics hated Interstellar, Star Wars, 2001, on and on for the simple reason they did not understand the movie.
Oh no, we understood it, we just didn't like it.
+justin riley read the book on the physics behind Interstellar then tell me the same thing. Chances are you did not understand it.
nosuchthing8 Don't compare this to Interstellar. That movie actually had something to talk about.
Hoping when i see it on Tuesday, the whole "it works for the fans " thing is what makes me enjoy it.
Yes, Mark is great but how many times did he move that mug before him?
3:39 4:00 4:07 Tactical mug moves
Mark is the only critic opinion that I truly trust and respect. I think he generally reviews films solely based on his own opinions rather than following the thoughts of the crowd. I'm sorry he didn't care for the film, but I think he's right about the fans. I assume that they, like myself, will see enough done right to forgive some of the film's faults. I loved the movie from start to finish. 8/10 from a fan.
I loved the animated series crossover special as well, to each their own.
all the performances were great. the only issue if the script and direction / editing.
Бen Aflak Шill Never Fill George Кlooney's Бoots
I'm new here Do they give ratings?
Alfred and Wonder Woman were the only likable characters.
Just noticed Mark kept randomly moving his coffee mug from left to right lol
First time seeing these two. Does the guy on the left always move around his coffee cup like that? Is that an OCD thing?
How many times does kermode move his cup in these interviews?
I loved this movie but I like this review. I always respect Mark's reviews.
Hi, if u happen to read this may i ask your reactions about wonder woman?
Thanks :)
I thought Gal Gadot was alongside Affleck's Batman as one of the better things of the movie. Very sassy and well/suited for the role! Looking forward to more of her in the Wonderwoman movie.
Put the mug down and step away. Step away from the mug.
the problem with Snyder is he's more style over substance....he can set up some really good shots ...none of his films look terrible...but they lack coherent storytelling and go in 27 million different directions
Mark nailed this review perfectly.
This review is so spot on!
100% right
His criticism is to be respected, he tells it like it is!
I attended the screening of BvS a couple of times, and Man of Steel is a better movie
RottenTomatoes, batman returns 80%, batman forever 41%, hulk 61%, incredible hulk 67%, superman returns 76%. I preferred bat v sup to these
"Martha" was Bruce Wayne's safe word.
