I agree that the grappling dummy should be a supplement at best, just like a boxer would use a heavy bag as a supplemental training tool. I like to think of the grappling dummy as the same, especially if you are a self led athlete, you wanna work on your own time and convenience. Your dummy is always clutch to when it comes to working out haha. It is not a comprehensive judo training tool, and can never substitute a real partner, but it does help reinforce some mechanics and muscle patterns like nothing else can. Really appreciate your input. I love my dummy btw haha -Jason
Hi Shintaro! Thanks for doing this Q&A! A few questions I'm hoping to ask are, how do you maintain your physical longevity in Judo? What's your opinion on instructors who got their 1st Dan and stopped competing altogether to minimise injuries and focus on teaching? What injuries have you suffered personally and what are your biggest "be careful of this kind of injury" experiences in Judo? Thanks so much!
Thanks again for the video Shintaro! I completely agree with you that improving your judo knowledge can be one of the best ways to improve your judo at the present time.
Bought a throwing dummy because our club shut down during the lockdowns. On the whole, it has been a good buy. It's different than throwing a person, but you can still work on your form and technique with it. Also, I bought the 90 lb version, and just picking the damn thing up after a throw is a workout in itself. I am exhausted after an hour of this.
Something I did early on was a bought a long (6 foot) pool noodle and put it through the sleeves of a gi and tied a belt to keep some shape to it. I already have judo gis and the pool noodle was only like a $4 additional investment. If you don’t make the effort to use that cheap experimental set-up, you probably won’t use a more expensive legit dummy however if you make a habit of using the pool noodle in gi set-up then you’ll probably be someone who makes the effort to work in a grappling dummy. I wound up preferring uchi-komi bands while standing but there was some mild use just going through a cycle of basic pins for ne-waza on the pool noodle dummy.
I have a versys 2 standup dummy. It doesn't work at all for any hip or shoulder throws but it helps with single/double legs and some sacrifice throws. My floppy grappling dummy works for mount attacks and escapes. I'd think a top heavy standup dummy could help with shoulder and hip throws but idk of any that advertise themselves as such.
Thanks for posting, greetings from 🇬🇧 I was considering buying a grappling dummy but you've changed my mind now. I will continue weight training and training my mind. Hopefully we will come through this with a positive body and mind and keep developing good judo.
I think these things are like any other price of "home gym equipment". If you invest well and you are going to use it then yes. I have a bjj dummy and I use him 3 -4 times a week. If your not using it (dummy, squat rack, dumbell set whatever) thennits a wast of money.
I workout with resistance bands and am considering buying a wrestling dummy. I definitely have the space for it. I have buddies who can grapple with me. But we are being cautious and are waiting till this whole thing blews over.
I know it’s not the same as an actual partner. I just want one so I can practice while I’m not at the dojo. So I can keep improving. Bcuz I’m a white belt. And the more reps I get in. The more I’ll get used to these things. So I could possibly improve a lot I think
Thank you for the wisdom. Would you mind share your thoughts about street fight and what should people do to prepare for it, if you believe the topic is worth to talk about. This topic could be very complicated when it involves other people. If I am all alone, I don’t need to care as much and I may just be the whimp and I am ok, but if I am with my significant half or if I have my son with me, it may be more complicated that being a whimp could cause catastrophic damage to the relationship or the kid’s mentality development. How would you handle it? Especially assuming the person picking on you is bigger or with companions.
Will make videos about this. Best self defense is to avoid. Because physical altercation always comes with risk. A lot of elements from Judo can be helpful in fighting. Some directly, some indirect. Will make a video on it soon. Thanks for reaching out.
Hi Shintaro I have thought about buying uncommon hands do you think this is a good idea and if he's what is the best option. Also I have seen a couple I comments on the Bulgarian bag any thoughts. With both of these t level of tension of weight would be important. I may add I'm an older guy and a beginner so really appreciate any advice
i like the Bulgarian bag for workouts. Nothing beats going to the gym though. They have lots of equipment there. For me, I will probably end up storing it. I dont know what uncommon hands are so I cant comment on that. Before you go buying equipment, the basic pull ups push ups and squats can do so much. Hope this helps.
Predictive text. Should have checked that. It should have read uchikomi bands. At home I have kettlebells 30kg and 16kg as well as 10k and 5k dumbells. The new addition is a 20kg weighted vest. At the moment I have reduced the weight in the vest to 10 kg and use it for 30-40 min walks. Then a circuit of squats press how etc. What I think I need is some drills to get body awareness of the throw. At the moment judo is not allowed back so it's all training at home
Grappling dummy is a good idea, buying one is not. Get a gi, pvc pipes and rope for skeleton, and old clothes for stuffing, duct tape. You can practice the motions to get your body used to it. They got dummies that lets you practice just your triangles that they use in some gyms. If they can use that, you can use a dummy.
hello I’m a kyokushin karate senpai I try to work at grappling and learn some moves and ways of throwing I have a space but I don’t have a partner to work with I see a web wich sell a dummy also a video course does this will add to me some real grappling experience?

Had mine like for two weeks, spend more time in the properly stuffing (hours) then I so far actually trained with it, but my 2 kids like it to mess around with & when placing on a new spot at night it often makes my wife freak out hahaha
Yes! As long as it’s built properly!! I write my routines down and practice them while watching the great videos on line!
I literally had a BJJ grappling dummy advertisement before this video

I bought a Bulgarian bag at the beginning of lockdown. A little expensive but its great for rotational exercises and doesn't take up much space.
Right on! I've had my Bulgarian Bag for a few years. I like to do a circuit using the bag, battle ropes, and some resistance bands for uchikomi.

Be careful with knee injury.
Thanks again for the video Shintaro! I completely agree with you that improving your judo knowledge can be one of the best ways to improve your judo at the present time.
I use rubber bands, it's a fun way of working out, on top of practising coordination of the body in turn throws
Nice Lucas, a good compliment to that if you have access is to use battle ropes to work the frontal coordination/strength/explosiveness for grappling
@@regalisexa3869 i've seen them be used a couple times, I'd like to try it!
@@lucasgarcia4193 Go for it, still use ropes to this day and they work just fine👍
Bands will help you build speed strength as well! Love them for dynamics
I would be acared of it popping

Right on. Barbell left alone for a year before i finally learned all how to deadlift correctly. Gym room taken up for months due to illness or injury.
Thank you for your great videos
Good comments especially rehab discussion
The Coddling of the American Mind is a really good book.
Thanks for the advice on solo training. Hopefully everything reopens soon.

Buy one bro! Body builders don’t make good judo players! It’s all about speed of entry!

Well I do have a younger sister, let’s see how I can really execute an ogos…. I mean why not buy a dummy yeah I have the space
You could just attach weights to your inflatable grappling dummy. You guys are a great crowd, have a good evening.
I got a bjj grappling dummy - never use it. 😕
You’re not focused enough and probably didn’t build it properly?
