Really cool set up sounds smooth. You sound awesome 👌 I'm re organising my Synths at the moment got a classic M1 korg a krome EX Roland xp80 Roland Ax Edge keytar and waiting on Roland Fantom-06.
11:15 "this is how love should feel" those repeat keyings sound like a tune from another maestro's work, the immense artist, Le Flex. Purely coincidental I imagine.
The Prophet6's lead synth on 7:00 is so beautiful... reminds me Ewi sound, specifically Michael Braker with Steps Ahead Live version to "In A Sentimental Mood" (Live in Tokyo 1986)... So expressive...
thanks for making these. it's actually amazing to see a true professional explaining their setup. incredible sounds and amazing equipment in the hands of someone who knows how to use it.
Thanks Matt, everything you do is MUSIC! The Montage, the Vintage Vive, the Prophet and the fx's are wonderful instruments, but I never forget that the main "instrument" there is your brain :) Saludos desde Buenos Aires.
It's such a joy to hear these beautiful instruments played by a musician of your skill. And you demonstrate the benefits to really learning how your gear works! I need to find your tour dates, hopefully catch you live in or near Bristol if you come down this way.
I really could listen to that Vintage Vibe all day long - what fabulous set up Matt, such sound dimension! Interesting listening to you talking about the Prophet going into the Montage. Fascinating stuff! Thanks for sharing!
Absolutely love this!! Only came across this now. Fantastic sounds and very well programmed. Always been a synth lover over the years. Really great to see a keyboard player who knows how to get the most of his keyboard rig.
I am just crossing over from many decades of guitar to keys, loving it so far, this video is really inspiring… and I am learning a lot from your channels… many thanks for sharing…
Unlike a lot of modern efforts that employ a lot of laziness and shortcuts in execution's, you sir employ smart playing, interesting surprises and a good deal of thought into delivering a great product and performance for your audience, not just what is easiest for you. Cheers!
the bit 5:50 on wards where you do the clav with the Rhodes and then the prophet lead line-, and then the vocal sample with the reverb arpeggiator pure class!!! im gonna find your album!!!!
Thank you thank you thank you. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and taking the time to make a video and etc. I have a setup that I would call a simplified version of your simplified setup :) but you just demonstrated that It is possible to do so much more with what I have. Thank you. Now I need to go watch you play live, buy the record and work with my setup. Please keep doing what you do. 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Thank you so much for putting this together. Learned a lot from your set-up. Love the sound that you made. I can't imagine the work that you put in to make it work for your gig. Thank you for the effort.
Thanks Matt. I prefer your slow emotive play with clever sounds over the 300mph finger athletics. The 3 keyboards complement each other beautifully. Inspiring me to keep learning. Hope your solo gigs keep you happy and balanced. must see you live.
Extraordinary. Creative! I just picked up a Yamaha MODX7+ (same engine as the Montage) and this video is very inspiring to explore all of it's layering, splits, etc. This video also taught me that I can use the FX on the audio input, which kinda blows my mind I didn't even think of that!
I've been feeding my synths through my Motif-synths for years. It's a great way of utilizing the Montage/Motif's insert effects on the keyboards you're feeding into it.
Thank you a lot for sharing this! I’m not a fan of Prophets and I think you are the only musician who can make Prophet 6 sound pleasant to my ears. That rig sounds truly amazing and inspiring.
This is very cool and very detailed. And THANK YOU for recording the video in stereo as well! Was cool to hear in the headphones what sometimes gets lost in a live setting.
Thanks Matt. This is the keyboard rig (minus the Vintage Vibe ) you were kind enough to recomend to me when I ask you for a 2 keyboard setup. So far I have the Montage and working on getting the Prophet 6. Never thought to run other keys into the Audio In on the Montage and use it's fxs. Brilliant!
You have such an imaginative use of sounds and samples which is augmented with your melodic rhythmic style. It just sounds so 'organic' ... The sonic pictures you aurally 'paint' are so pretty and detailed. I hear Bob James, Lyle Mays BUT with a Matt Johnson stamp. An excellent clip!
Thanks for sharing that gig set up Matt. Here I was thinking there must be more to it, and what more should I do with my rig but actually my rig is pretty similar. Instead of launching samples off the keys I use my Korg Kross 2 sample pads but I can see why you use the keys for speed and access. I also typically have splits on both keyboards and phaser and expression pedal. The only additional thing I have is an iPad Pro running Camelot Pro which has my set list and it sends all the patch and song changes to the keyboards which I trigger with a foot switch. Camelot Pro also plays back samples in the right place so I don’t need to trigger but my drummer does need to play to a click and I feed him the backing track elements too. If you haven’t checked out Camelot Pro it’s worth a look for making a keyboard live rig set up easier to manage, you wouldn’t need to worry about getting back to that BV sample in time.
Nice sounds and playing Matt and you have all the vintage sounds and you get modern when you need it. Lovely to see you giving us some info on what to do at a real gig.
Amazing video Matt! I find videos like these so inspiring to get an idea what kind of sound design the pro's are doing. So cool you are using samples instead of playing to a backing track which so many bands seem to be doing these days. Does make it a bit of a finger and mind exercise to remember to press the right keys at the right times. So cool! Big thanks for sharing. Will subscribe now!
Hey Matt…been loving your channel for a while now. You’re such a gentleman and so generous with your knowledge and mastery. I’m a drummer but I learn so much from you..thank you for sharing with us. You deserve a way bigger following! sorry I missed your recent gig. When are you playing next in London?
Wow, if this is your "small gig" setup I would love to see how extensive your full setup is when you tour with Jamiroquai.. It must be out of this world
Awesome rundown! 🙂 my own setup is smaller (2 boards only), but I have rigged them together with MIDI to only have to change patch for the next song on 1 "main" machine; MIDI will then change the programme on the other board for me. If you're not already doing that, it might help you change between songs quicker (less chance of forgetting a setting in the heat of it all - which is paramount for me! 😊). Just a thought. Keep up the great videos! 🙂👍
That pan effect through headphones is going to make me have a seizure. 🤣 I think your "small gigs" must be the same size as my big ones, because those vintage vibes are HEAVY (and expensive). You have some awesome equipment. That's one hell of a rig. 👍 I love the intimate piano with the expression pedal.
Lov this! I’ve been thinking about switching my 13 year old Norg Stage for something else to do all the dirty work in my cover band. That Montage is looking like a contender. Thx for the inspo 👍
Very inspirational .. just working on a setup of a budget version of this: a Modx that I run both a Model D for the bass sounds and a Model 15, both from an Ipad, into the USB audio of the Modx. Creating a patch was easy with three different zones, one with my favorite Rhodes sounds on the Modx, then the two analogue ‘ish sounds from the Moog apps. need to play with the effects on the Modx now for the Model 15 pads. Only thing that was giving me a hard time was to find an explanation how to get the Miodx into master keyboard mode. Works like a charm and gives the analog/Rhodes vibe with analog pads.
Really cool to see/hear the rig Matt. "Moody sound engineer" is a brilliant and universal term:)
Haha yeah!
I would be moody too if I was a live sound engineer haha.
Is there any other kind? ;-)
Really cool set up sounds smooth.
You sound awesome 👌
I'm re organising my Synths at the moment got a classic M1 korg a krome EX

this sounds so full with just keys. the entire band in full flight must be a total experience. excellent sounds coming out of this setup!

Could you explain a little bit on how you got that beautiful envelope? And the texture... so good
@@garrymanilovich4295 that would be so cool
@@ShawnGrove How did you get to beautiful sound at about 7 min in to the video?
That vintage vibe is pure class
Incredible. A true wizard at work. The moment you touch keys the air turns to magic.
Thanks!

me too i subbed after hearing it lol
Had to pause this half way through Matt. The smile says it all. This is deep pro usage. Not aware of anything comparable online. Thank you. Xx
Beautiful sounds, Matt! Please tour Australia.
What a joy to watch Matt play those sounds. So original. So cool. Funky, jazzy, classy.
Very impressive sounds, but more important is the extraordinary musical ability. Awesome work. I really liked those tunes.
Thanks for listening
This is why this guy is so good live!
My goodness. Feels like we were all treated to a 1 man mini-gig in this video. Brilliant!
Absolutely love this!! Only came across this now. Fantastic sounds and very well programmed. Always been a synth lover over the years. Really great to see a keyboard player who knows how to get the most of his keyboard rig.

Your playing is so incredibly beautiful -- thank you for sharing it with us!
Thanks!
must grab your album. inspiring to see such a happy, capable musician dance scross 3 keyboards.
Thanks Matt J for all you do and bringing the love back for all us giging musicians. You give so many great ideas on rigs. Thanks again.
The Vintage Vibe is outrageous!
Unlike a lot of modern efforts that employ a lot of laziness and shortcuts in execution's, you sir employ smart playing, interesting surprises and a good deal of thought into delivering a great product and performance for your audience, not just what is easiest for you. Cheers!
great point about having a good engineer. gotta have a good one!
You are one of my favorite people in the whole world. I say "one of", but right now I can't think of who the others are.
Gorgeous! And it reminded me once again that 'With the Music' is such a great album. Thank you Matt!
Glad you like it!

The trick with having an expression pedal mix in an octave+ with reverb was very nice
so much fun to see how this actually works in a live performance
Wow.Ilike the keyboard voices.You remind me of lyle mays,the way you play.Its dreamy&heavenly music.Thank you,.Matt.
I love Lyle Mays

Man I love to hear u play!.............all that's missing is some good cognac and a nice cigar
Loving the rig & your playing ma bro.....I'm inspired!!!
Love the walkaround of your 'lite' setup. Sounds incredible. Thanks for making this video!
Great to see - thanks for sharing! Given the breakdown of parts, would be interesting to see the band in action as you're playing these various parts.
I really love your way of reasoning with sound design! Good tip with the high distortion in the mix.
Great keyboard alchemy as usual Matt! Clearly you're enjoying yourself. Thanks for letting us peek behind the curtain.

Awesome. Best part of the rig: Matt himself ;) Best of luck for the little tour!
Love it, Matt! Thanks for this video and for what you do in general! Sending regards from Carlsbad by the Sea, California.

the wurly w distortion brings me back to "Stay with Me" Rod Stewart. Love it . Your playing and patches are sound magnificent!.

Oh boy! Its amazing to hear you play Matt. Love your style and your skills
Really lovely set-up and as ever, fantastic playing. Thanks for this excellent video.

Hi Matt! Where's the best place to look for your upcoming gigs? Would love to hear you playing your own stuff live!
if you follow my instagram I make those kind of announcements there, or Facebook
Sounds great, your musical ideas aswell 👍 thanks
Thanks for the
Ideas, I got a Nord stage and a modx, going to connect them.
Love the distorted Vintage Vibe sound, that one prophet lead is super buttery too
I like the little shot of "Dexter Wansel" towards the end
Great insight Matt, thanks. We recently worked with a ‘stoned’ sound engineer at one of our gigs. Not as pleasant as one might think ! All the best.
Lots of valuable hints in a nutshell, thanks Matt!
It's about time. Current keyboard playing lacks imagination when it comes to orchestration and textures. Nice work...
Thanks so much for this. Great sounds. But really it is all you. You are such an amazing player. I am a total fan of Vintage Vibe.
thank you!

Awesome video as always. I route all of my (considerably cheaper 😂😂) keys into my Roland DS using a small passive mixer and it works great
I just watched the complete video. I do not own a keyboard. I probably never will. Still loved to see Matt go.
Really psychodeliic & brilliant sounds
