Tristin Harrelson im a huge fan,her versatility is absolutely amazing.
It's already awesome enough she's able to switch so effortlessly between deep growls (as deep as I've heard any man ever do), but she does all this on live stage too, while jumping around like a toddler on amphetamines.
And even more impressive is that she maintains doing this even when she's completely out of breath.
Some of the live festival recordings have her do shoutouts between numbers and she's utterly out of breath and 5 seconds later she's singing like and angel and bellowing like a demon again.
Same. I could watch the dance she does in the interlude all day long.
At first i was like what in the hell is this?! and now i’m doing a whole Jinjer month on my channel and going to see them live in September haha...they definitely grow on you

Felt the same way the first time I heard the song! Now, 2 months later, Jinjer is one of my favorite bands. So many awesome songs and performances and just a they are just very creative in their approach (growling/cleans, multiple time signatures, heavy metal with bits of jazz influence thrown in). I just love them (even ordered a tshirt, lol)

@@KristinKali Hope you are feeling better :-) The first time is a bit of a shock for sure. I didn't think I'd listen to it again, but a couple of days later I did, and knowing what was coming I really started to dig it. You should give 'I Speak Astronomy' a try - there is only a couple of parts like that - but you get a better idea of her clean vocals. Or even 'Bad Water' (no grows/screaming).

She's a Pisces and it's a metaphor about her being timid to make herself vulnerable in a relationship. Each relationship strips her "armor" away, little by little. She has some of the cleanest "Fry screams". A lot of practice and skill to do that without destroying your vocal chords. Loved the reaction!
Tatiana is probably one of the best lyricists in metal right now. English isn't even her first or second language and she's still brilliant. Pisces is a song written about the duality of being a Pisces. That's why you have the back and forth between clean singing and fry screaming. It represents the duality of it all.
I feel it relates to people who are or were scared of something, and they suddenly become a stronger person and dont fall for the traps that frighten them
This song was made for reactions. It lulls the listener into a false sense of security.

I think at this point they need their own genre... they do things no other metal band is doing... it's a bit progressive, with hints of thrash, metalcore, nu metal, jazz, and other genres....
I call it JinjerMetal.
She uses a lot of metaphorical imagery in her lyrics that's why you got the fish out of water vibe she's describing how she felt in certain bad relationships that were brought on by the duality of her personality.
Yup, I came to that same conclusion about what to call them some time ago. ; )

I bought two of their albums shortly after first hearing them for the first time, I have to admit, I love every single track they have on them, especially Beggars Dance, the closing song of King Of Everything, is fucking genius and took me completely off guard after listening to the whole album in one go.

About the band: of course, Tatiana is a Tsunami, overrunning everybody the first time but I am very happy that you appreciate a little bit her unbelievable talent. Indeed she is for sure the most talented female metal vocalist in her league but when you listen again to the song try to take an ear on the guys, they are unbelievable fantastic too. Btw, there are some more growling female metal singers but there clears are also more raspy, Tati has the rare ability to shade from here wonderful warm undistorted voice into deepest growl like she wants and she is doing this complete effortless
About the song is to say: Tatiana wrote it and "Pisces" is the zodiac sign for Fishes and shes born under this sign and the lyrics are very personal about herself. The picture for Pisces are two fishes in an oval like hunting each other and that is what the lyrics are about - the struggle and hunting of different shades of the soul.
Jinjer has always very demanding lyrics and an own style of metal music, beside the regular categories , if you want more Jinjer I would recommend the live appearances with the songs "Who is gonna be the one" and "Captain Clock".

Fun reaction! My interpretation of the lyrics is that it's about failed relationships. Being deeply in love and ending up being hurt. After a failed relationship she goes into her shell (scale armour) and while trying to project confidence (suffering with a smile) she is hurt and scared of starting a new relationship (coward shivering inside). Ultimately though she relents and looks for a new relationship (searching for a hook to catch on) but ends up being hurt again (suffocating painful tortures) when she lets down her defenses (emerald scales being ripped away).
Obviously there's some shock value in this song but don't let that put you off. All the members in the band are immensely talented and their songs - while heavy - have a lot of variety. If you're daring try "I Speak Astronomy". It's a lot less shocking and there's a beautiful soaring clean section at the end.

I believe the song is to the nature of the Pisces within the zodiac. It is considered the 12th sign and said to bring together many of the characteristics of the other 11 signs. Pisces are also considered to be very emotional and empathic, feeling not only their emotions strongly but also the emotions of those around them.
I believe this song refers to the duality of those under the sign, which the singer Tatiana is apart of. Its expressed very well in the lyrics of the song, AND by the energy of the song, going from one extreme to another. Honestly the song is a masterpiece

Tatiana, the lead singer is into astrology and is a Pisces. My interpretation of the lyrics is that she is describing herself as a Pisces, as it relates to her own life. Perhaps she sometimes feels like a fish out of water.
As far as what metal genre Jinjer is, New Metal/Grind Core. Listen to bands like Korn, System of a Down, or any number of the top metal bands from the 2000's.

Found her name.... The Vocal Coach is Mellissa Cross you should look up her HBO special cause it shows how not only she helped metal bands but also shows some of the methods she uses. I think you would find it very interesting and maybe it will put away any preconceived notions you have about the metal growl. I don't know how to pull the link or id have put it in sis i know it been easier that way

@@jhall2904 I've been listening to metal and later industrial since Metallica's black album came out when I was a teenager. I've never liked anyone's growls - male or female. I'd heard stuff by both Arch Enemy's singers and Otep (Tati's inspiration to learn growls, btw) before stumbling across Jinjer but it all left me cold. But I became an instant fan the first time I heard Pisces. Tati is something special.
Jinjer's music does mostly feature the growls, but if it's the clean voice you're after, try their song "Bad Water". It's an older song of theirs about nature, from the perspective of Mother Nature. It also has no growls.
But yes, again, in general, most of their music is like the rougher parts. They commonly get classed as Nu-Metal, but their sound is actually more blended than that. They regularly play with sounds and styles from jazz, reggae, pop, hip-hop, rock, punk, and of course metal.

@@KristinKali we ended the online stuff and met with a teacher once a week who gave assignments, He couldn't do it on his own so I would teach him a method I used.. 1) scribble ideas on paper. 2) arrange them in point form. 3) make a rough draft with lines between for correction. 4) write out in best handwriting with highlighter and a ruler.

Just stumbled on your channel Kristin. Jinjer reactions tend to bring folks in, for fans of the band, fans of those first (usually surprised) reactions to them, and those who fall into both columns that like to see people fall in love with the band. For total non-growls, there's "Bad Water." For like less than around a minute (total) of growls, which occurs early a couple times, check out the amazing official video to "I Speak Astronomy." "Perennial" also has less total growling (beautiful song and video), I believe, and "Teacher, Teacher" is very well balanced too, and features a great mix of footage from their concerts. Anyone who tells you to immediately go to "Who Is Gonna Be The One" live, "Sit Stay Roll Over", "Captain Clock", "Words of Wisom" or "Ape" no, don't. Don't do that, not till--and only if--you're ready. If you can hang in there, you'll be richly rewarded by the talents of not only the magnificent vocals and lyrics of Tatiana, but by the whole band who are brilliant at everything they do.
Last thing, someone elsewhere mentioned reacting to Unleash The Archers song "Awakening." Amazing song and band, and that one to me, feels much more power metal I suppose. Very little growling that song, just a bit around the 4 and a half minute mark, not by Brittney. I'm saying that just to prepare you. But it's another superb band and song I'd recommend to anyone who can appreciate it. That one is, as someone put it, the kind of song you might want playing as you ride into an epic battle.

The lyrics on lyric genius are correct except for the line "scale armor blaze", it should be "Scale armor belies". Her accent makes it sound like "blaze". That said, this song gives me chills every single time, especially when she goes from growl to clean vocals at the end and hits that high range. This band is perfect

@@saiga12 If that's the case I stand corrected. I don't follow her Instagram and was just going off what the album lyrics say. Sometimes their lyrics are a bit strange since English isn't her 1st language so I figured that was why it seemed odd. I saw her mention in an interview that the lack of direct translation for certain words can make it a little difficult to write in English

There's just an enumeration of the two beings' properties: scale armor blaze, virgin innocence. And then there's an enumeration of their behavior: one being brings life, another runs for death. Anyway, she has posted the lyrics in her Instagram with "blaze" herself. You can even hear she sings "blaze" if you listen very carefully to it.
The astrological symbol of Pisces is of two fish swimming in opposite directions, hence the dichotomy of the two types of vocals here and the shocking surprise switch between the two.

The vocal execution it takes to do that is amazing. People really don't get the training it takes to do that. In fact ill have to re look up the lady's name, but she is a vocal coach who took note how artists were destroying their vocal cords to creat that particular metal deep throat growl that she began taking the artists aside and teaching them vocal exercise to help save their vocals.

Tatiana is a very talented singer who has trained extremely hard to sing with the other voice.
The song is about the duality within all of us, as Pisces is represented by two fish, the good and the evil, Ying and Yang. Or that is my interpretation of the song.

The genre Jinjer is usually considered to operate in is Progressive Metalcore, though the band prefers to avoid genre labels. Tatiana's talent isn't so much anything technical - that comes down to physiology to be able to go that low (and much lower in other songs), and a ton of work and experience to make the most of that physiology. Her talent is infusing her singing with emotion. It doesn't hit me so hard because I'm a guy and this is a deeply feminine song, but what looks like panic attacks (and sounds like it from your description of what you were feeling in your arm) are not uncommon from women reacting to Pisces. It delves into some very deep, very dark stuff. Tati hasn't gone on record much about Pisces but has shared a bit about other aspects of her life. It seems like she is exploring the duality of her emotional make-up through the lens of the Pisces sun sign which is 2 fish swimming in opposite directions ("one being brings life, the other runs for death" - btw, most lyrics sites have an error it should be "scale armor *belies..."). Her chronic depression, feelings of isolation, and longing for connection on one hand. Her anger, hurt, and self-destructive (possibly masochistic?) urges on the other. Only "Dreadul Moments" goes darker than this while "Sit Stay Roll Over" is just flat out pissed off. Most of their other songs are about protest and political activism. "I Speak Astronomy", "Bad Water", and "Perennial" are lighter songs. "Who Is Gonna Be The One" and "Captain Clock" are heavy songs but without the emotional darkness of "Pisces".

Spot on Steve. I have to whole heartedly agree. She has spoken about her depression and anxiety in an interview with a psychology internet magazine. Since i read that interview I've seen new meaning in a lot of their music. Once you get past the shock factor and can start seeing the musicians individually for their talents and tatiana's incredible lyricism they grow on you fast

This my friend is what you might call.... sugar coated death metal. If you're not accustom to death metal - this here is a song with a sweet coating.
The sugar helps the medicine go down, welcome to death metal. A lot of rock music, most hard rock and almost all metal and particularly death metal or black metal: is *therapy* in the form of exorcising one's own demons.
*I don't expect anyone but metal heads to understand that a head of time,* so if you're unaccustomed to this genre: with anything you hear from it - keep that foundational principle in mind and suddenly it all makes a hell of a lot more sense. Metal and even more so death metal/black metal like this is a *therapeutic release* of pent up emotions and dark or twisted thoughts - everything that if left to sit inside yourself is poisonous to you. It's a way of getting all that toxin out of your system so that it doesn't eat away at your soul.
So if metal seems very dark and cold and dangerous or scary: you now know why that is. It's a genre of music specifically designed to release your demons and gain relief from your grief and your grievances and all of the dark emotions that everyone accumulates in life. It's a way of examining what hurts inside, taking it out with one hand, flipping it off with the other and feeling better as a result. That's what the darker sides of rock really are. There's even death metal and black metal *Christian bands* out there which sound like this - but preach the gospel and praise Jesus in their lyrics.
It sounds like a primal or even demonic scream of anguish and rage: because that's what it is. It's a form of music which functions as a pure and uninhibited expulsion of negativity and pain - to express it and thereby control it: rather than allowing it to control you. It's not for everyone and I won't try to convince you into liking something which you don't, everyone's free to like what they like and have their own taste: I just didn't want you to have the wrong impression of what it actually was.

If you are at all interested in checking out other genres of metal, please check out "Ghost Love Score- Nightwish" live 2013 at Wakken. The lead singer is versatile, and in my opinion, one of the best vocalists alive. The band is a Symphonic Metal band from Europe, and they are one of the best live bands in the world. I promise, you will be stunned in the best way possible that there are vocalists out there that blow any pop or R&B vocalist out of the water, yet the mainstream music world ignores them. It's a travesty, to be honest. Great video, and Tatiana is a vocal beast, as well as an extremely versatile vocalist. Great band, good song, and I hope you give them more of a chance because they are absolutely worth it.

Going back to see your older reactions. For years now, I get a kick from seeing people see Metal Goddess Tatiana for the first time. Don't worry....she's an acquired taste for most. Get to know her and the group. Seek out their band logs and see their story. Tatiana and the guys are truly good people doing their thing. She even likes hip-hop and has some killer dance moves. They are metal. I hate the subcategories, but could be goth, thrash, Euro....blah, blah...labels. Love hearing your feelings and introspection into the meanings. Art is truly about individual interpretation. Could see in your eyes that you are indecisive about them for the moment but I think the door is open to exploring more of them even though it may not ultimately be your thing. Jinjer explores many allegorical avenues with their music. Tatiana is very astrological and ethereal with some of her musical explorations. Try to see more of the imagery you alluded to and you will see where they are coming from and better yet where they are going. Hoping your love for all music forms keeps you interested. Many bands in metal deal with some deep subjects in some of their songs. I have hope and faith in you!! Rock on and stay heavy!!!! \m/

Those lyrics are almost correct... there is a page going around the net that has the chorus as "scale armour blaze" you should go to azlyrics or genius instead of google.
The actual chorus is "scale armour belies, virgin innocence" it makes sense that way.
