For those who can't get Dashi, you CAN westernize it by using 1/4 of a chicken bullion cube with a bit of Thai Fish Sauce. Not the same flavor, but it's fishy enough for a similar effect. Don't stress if you can't find the dashi, sometimes it's just not available... and perhaps you jumped the gun and bought octopus hoping to come up with a sub. This works perfectly fine.
Just One Cookbook I followed this recipe today and I found that my Takoyaki had a strong egg flavour (like an omelette). Am I doing something wrong? If not are there any suitable substitutes for egg?
I just made this today and it turned out great! :D Because I didn't have a takoyaki pan, I just used a mini muffin tray and it worked very well! Will make this again soon. :D :D
To me as a westerner, this looks like it's coming from another planet. Utterly fascinating. Respect to the Japanese people and their wonderful culture.
I adore takoyaki, but I've never tried making it myself. I can't wait make it myself. For pescatarians, I'm thinking smoked salmon might be interesting. For vegetarians, I would use shiitake "bacon." You make shiitake "bacon" by slicing the mushrooms and seasoning it with a generous amount of olive oil and salt and pepper. Lay the shiitake on a baking tray, taking care not to let them overlap. Bake at 350 for about 30 minutes, but you have to rotate the tray every 5 minutes. The finished shiitake should be golden and somewhat crisp and should reduce in size. The best thing is it tastes surprisingly like bacon. The shiitake "bacon" is a recipe from chef Chloe Coscarelli.
I LOVE your suggestion! Thank you for sharing the shiitake "bacon" recipe. I love mushrooms and this sounds really good! Thanks for watching my video, Yoshiko-san!
Yes I might try those ideas too. Not that I'm a vegetarian, but in Australia I still haven't found anywhere I can buy octopus. I wonder if I could try squid too?
Lol she makes it look so easy that it makes me wanna do it too! I can't even imagine how she kept track of where to put those octopus chops when the batter literally covered the whole takoyaki tray thingy
I honestly haven't had this first so long since I graduated high school I only had it a couple of times when I was in Kyushu and that was for my savings for a whole year I only went with two of my friends that were transfer classmates and I honestly enjoyed my time over there now I know how to make this now I can enjoy it at home thank you so much brings me back good memories
Just made this recipe! Thank you!! I didn’t have dashi but it worked fine with just water. I added a tablespoon of cornstarch to get extra gooey effect
Here in the Philippines some stalls who sell takoyaki they put cheese and crab sticks inside instead of octopus. But my favorite one, is with baby octo + they sweet takoyaki. I hope before I die I can visit Japan and buy and eat takoyaki there.
Thank you for uploading this!! 😊 It looks really good, I really like takoyaki. I've heard that the most common substitutes for the octopus filling tend to be blocks of cheese or sliced hotdog pieces. I know it's really hard to get octopus where I live so I hope this helps others who can't get it.
Thank you for watching! Takoyaki is a fun snack to make with kids and we love it too. :) Yeah, cheese is awesome. I love cheese + mochi combo is my fav! I'll try hot dog one. Thank you for your suggestion! xo
I love your videos. Full of cooking information without talking too much. I also like the background music you're using on every video so calming and fun as well. 👍🏽
Thank you so much for your kind words. We debated for a long time how we want to create our videos, and it looks like this is our video style we want to continue. I'm so happy you like this style! Thank you for your kind feedback!
I used to eat these on Fridays with friends after school, which is one thing I certainly miss about Japan. I lived just outside of Osaka, but here, street food is a lot harder to find.
These look awesome I have watched quite a few videos on how to make these and yours look perfect. I must find a griddle first. Thinking I also might try them with prawn or crab
I love Takoyaki. Still remember those that I enjoyed in Japan years ago! I seriously need to get this griddle. Thanks for sharing this wonderful tutorial. :) Can't wait to try your recipe at home.... hopefully soon. 😉
My granddaughter likes imitation crab and would be more likely to try this if I used that. On the other hand, if I'm able to find octopus, I could probably use it and just not tell her. I suspect if she ate it, she'd like it. Great presentation. Thanks.
Love this recipe. We also tried adding some finely chopped cabbage into some of ours along with the seafood and it reminded us of okonomiyaki! It also made the batter last a lot longer so we made a ton of takoyaki. Thank you for this recipe!!!
this looks great. i want to try making this at home now. I have had Takoyaki made with squid instead of octopus and it was delicious. i have had traditional takiyaki also and i do love octopus !
i tried takoyaki for the first time last month and i love it! i want to try and make it with your recipe. i have also followed your recipe and bought the pan for the taiyaki before and it was delicious!!

I'm more concerned about how I'm going to find some octopus in the midwest 😂
Victoria LeMaster call forth the Kraken!
I literally always have dashi 😂😂
Sounds kinda fishy XD
@@VictoryLeMaster you don't even need octopus, but it's technically no longer called "tako-"yaki.
Yesssss!!!!! Authentic cook making authentic food!!!! 💯💯💯💯💯
I'll hang out on UA-cam for next 30 minutes. If you have any questions, I'm here! :)

How about 3 years?
@@timabbott3858 Yes, it should just be one egg. then you get more round balls
I just made this today and it turned out great! :D Because I didn't have a takoyaki pan, I just used a mini muffin tray and it worked very well! Will make this again soon. :D :D
I love takoyaky food
I love Takoyaki ! I have a takoyaki pan, but sometimes, I make them in a cake pops machine, it works very well !
Thank you for letting me know, that's right! I should add that in my description box. :)
Watching this makes me admire Japanese people even more ! They are just so patient and delicate with the food
Thank you for your kind words. I'm not very patient so usually it's Mr. JOC making takoyaki. I'm not very good at this... =P
CrystalJo delicate???there was nothing delicate here

Your takoyaki recipe is great! I sometimes use brown sugar instead of normal sugar because I like that molasses taste to the sauce
Looks delicious! I am watching a Japanese drama and saw them making this and I wanted to know what it was. It looks yummy!
We always order this in our local Japanese restaurant. Always delicious!

Nebbys why not squids?
Nah-it's gotta be seafood! Try shrimp or scallops next time. I do Ebiyaki whenI don't feel like cooking an octopus.

You can order through Milktea stores, but I prefer homemade since you can make the amount you like and possibly cheaper ^^~
Looks gorgeous and delish, and you made it look like a lot of fun to make! Street foods just have that quality to them. Video work was fab.
Thank you so much! I was actually struggling... it's always Mr. JOC who make this, but he had to film.... Mine is not perfect like his. :D
