  • That didn't go to plan! We're making the most of time off this early winter season in the Scottish Highlands with another wild camp out in the remote hills surrounding Loch Quoich. With difficult road conditions our start was delayed and the weather takes a turn for the worse early on day two. Follow along as we practise our decision making skills in intense conditions high on a Scottish Munro.
For this winter adventure, Ben used the Hanchor TUFA 38L pack and Megs is using the Hyperlight Mountain Gear Southwest 2400. We took the Hilleberg Allak 2. We packed our Grivel Airtech New Matic Evo crampons and Camp Corsa Nanotech Ice Axes, to keep us safe over the icy scramble near the summit.
Remember to THINK WINTER if you're heading into hills this winter season. The days are short and conditions under foot are likely to be slow and difficult. Give yourself time, bail out options and be prepared! Conditions over ambitions.
Join us as we talk lightweight gear, hiking, camping and all things outdoors in a stunning Scottish setting.
Some of the gear we used:
    Soto Windmaster Stove: amzn.to/317i7x4
    Evernew 1.5ltr Waterbag: amzn.to/3FO3L3Q
    Evernew Titanium Cup: amzn.to/31n4z1g
Titanium Lifeventure Long Handled Spoon: amzn.to/3rBld7O
    Nitecore NB10000 Battery Pack: amzn.to/3pv1QL9
    Petzl Swift Headtorch: amzn.to/3rx8UcR
    Petzl E + Lite Headtorch: amzn.to/3dgNVCK
This list is not exhaustive! If you have any questions about the gear we used, drop us a comment, we'd love to chat 🙏🏼 Alternatively, check out one of our 'What's in my Pack?!' videos on the channel.
If you like the look of any of the gear we talked about in the video, you can purchase it for yourself, using the Amazon using the links above. It won’t cost you anymore, but we’ll get a little something back if you use our affiliate links.

Excellent, well done for filming this. It's a rare combo having a couple that can function and enjoy together those conditions, so we'll done you two. Totally understand the turn back decision, looked brutal up there!

Glad you enjoyed it Dave! We are very grateful to have such keen shared passions. There is definitely mutual appreciation when we put out on those conditions. We went back and got to the summit a week or so later in conditions almost as bad 😂 Happy trails!

Another fab video Megan & Ben. Very challenging conditions before you even reach the starting point🤣🤣❄️❄️
Lovely part of the country and even more beautiful seeing it all covered in snow. Yeh you just know when it’s time to turn back, no point risking it in those harsh conditions.
Happy new year to you both & have a great year in the hills,

Hey Frank, happy new year to you too!! It’s a wonderful remote area that, always looks especially good in its winter coat. Definitely good to practice assessing the conditions, light, time etc and turn back if you need to, it can be hard to make that call as you always want to press on. Happy trails, Ben & Megs.

Right call guys, the weather looked very challenging in the morning and i know Gairaich has a steep section . I camped on it in early spring there was a lot less snow then , plenty on the top but on the way down ice in the morning was our hazard. Another good winter camp guys , nice one ..Cheers Stevie

      @OutdoorIntrigue  Рік тому +1

Thanks Stevie, glad you enjoyed - appreciate you watching! Conditions were full on, was still a great day out in the hills though. As much as we love our Munro bagging, the summit always comes second to just spending time in the mountains. Loch Quoich in Spring is glorious, we had some great days out on Spidean and Gleouraich earlier this year. All the best and Happy New Year 🥳

Haha! Still wouldn’t have it any other way 😉 we went back a week later in similar conditions but with day packs and more daylight and managed to get the summit. Still, was a grand wild camp and fun was had by all 🙌🏼 Happy New Year to you too Kev 🥳🥂

Happy New Year Mark! Hope you’re doing well and your knee injury is getting better? It was a brilliant trip, missed out on the summit but that’s really just a secondary goal to being out in awesome conditions. Hope 2023 is kind to you and full of adventure. All the best, Megs & Ben

@@OutdoorIntrigue Hey, both thanks. I'm alright putting aside my injury. I see a specialist Monday so I'm hopeful I get get back out backpacking soon. It's my shin and an old injury in my ankle. Let's see what unfolds. I can still swim rivers. Take care.

Hey guys. Another cracking watch. Very challenging conditions, that climb would have been difficult even without the snow. Definitely better to turn around if your gut says so. There is always another day! Those 10mm poles are a game changer. Not wanting to get too geeky but I think the DAC quoted 9mm are actually 8.65mm. The quoted 10mm are actually 10.25mm, so a considerable difference. I upgraded to the 10mm for my Jannu and it’s surprising how much extra structural strength they provide. Defo worth the weight penalty in harsh weather. ATB. Gary

Hey Gary great to see your input here and sharing of this Pole mm difference... I too am a big fan of the 10mm poles and wouldn't even use the 9mm on my Akto.... ATB Tom . Hey Outdoor Intrigue thank you for another great video and sharing of sensible information as always... ATB Tom

Hey Gary, glad you liked the video! That’s interesting on the pole diameter as I did think the difference seemed more than 1mm. It really is mad how much of a difference the pole change makes to the red label tents. I say they are brown label with the black poles 😉. Happy trails for 2023! Ben & Megs

Hey 👋🏼. We love our La Sportiva Aequilibriums for winter, they are light for a technical boot and comfy. We both use them with thick smart wool mountaineering socks, so they stay warm. That does mean you need to size up slightly though. Thanks for watching!! Happy trails!! 🙌🏼❤️

Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it ☺️🙏🏼 I love my Arc’Teryx Atom LT, it’s synthetic so perfect for wet Scottish winters. It’s warm though and not as breathable as a fleece. Polartec is great for breathability and warmth if you’re looking for a fleecy material.

It’s a thermos we picked up about 4-5 years ago on a whim in the Green Welly! Been trying out a lighter Thermos 900ml Ultimate one recently though that’s been ace.

An Allak? I'd bring my Tarra and make her carry it as am a sadist as was my dad ; he decided to marry my mum after she managed to push his car out of the snow.
