  • Ben takes the Hilleberg Akto out for its second wild camp in snowy winter conditions in our local hills. It was a bluebird day for the ascent, but in true Highland fashion, the weather turned through the night, sweeping in a warm front, a lot of rain and some challenging mountain conditions.
    For this fast packing summit camp, Ben was using the Bonfus Iterus DCF pack, designed for light and fast adventures.
    Join us as we talk lightweight gear, hiking, camping and all things outdoors in our back garden hills.

      The weather just won’t stick this winter!! 😭 Very happy with the Akto so far. Good balance of weight for weather resistance.

    Nice work, another one under the belt, good to see the Akto getting put through it’s paces, and with the addition of the 10mm pole… 👍
    Weather in the morning looked piss miserable, your mic picked it up well, I could literally feel those ice cold rain drops hitting me in the face, felt for you there…
    Thanks again for sharing, again, giving me motivation to get back out there 👍

      Ayy always good to be out, even when the weather does a number on you! The Akto with a 10mm pole is going to handle some serious weather I think. It’s pretty incredible even with the 9mm pole tbf. I was getting it right in the eyes at the end of the vid 😂. Appreciate you watching mate.

    The way up looked stunning 👍! I suppose bloody global warming is making weather conditions so changeable. Remember back in the day when it would snow and it stayed for a week or two? The changeable weather makes mountain conditions unpredictable,more so than they used to be. Spose we all need to hope for the best and plan for the worse if we want to enjoy the hills in all seasons. Great vid Ben, a long time subb.
    All the best to you both.

      Hey Fraser 👋🏼, thanks for subbing and hanging around! We appreciate it ☺️. Yeah the winters are getting less and less certain, it’s a real shame. Totally different to 20 years ago, it’s mad isn’t it, we do what we can to minimise impact, but the whole world needs to take it seriously. Definitely plan for why and all weather in the Scottish hills! Take care matey 👍

    Hi Ben, fantastic evening hike in, the views were beautiful. Very pretty. I appreciate the amount of effort it takes to set camera, walk through, and retrieve. What a contrast to the morning weather. A sun rise would have been great, but there are always other days.

    Fantastic vid Ben. What a time you must have had out winter camping. The wind seemed fairly strong but overall the weather was good.
    I’ve been thinking of a 10mm pole for my Scarp 1… The Easton 9mil one that comes with it seems alright but tyr larger one would help me sleep better should strong winds roll in.
    Cheers bud 👍

      Hey buddy, it was good fun, it always is is t it! Weather here currently is awful! Hoping for better in February. The 10mm pole is as you say really nice for peace of mind. It’s substantially stronger you can actually feel it. Great for our silly wind speeds, but equally for snow loading.

    Good night out Ben, nothing worse when the temperature increases when you want a cold & crisp one. How much height did you lose to fetch the camera at 3:45? 😜 I attach my Kestrel to the outside too, I've found the temperature gauge can be really sensitive. Axe is a must, whereas you can get away without crampons, but can only make that call when you get more experienced.

    • @OutdoorIntrigue
      @OutdoorIntrigue  2 роки тому

      Hey buddy, frustrated by the weather I was, and still am tbh.. hey ho. That shot at 3:45 was commitment to the cause right!! 😂 Painful having to go back down for the camera and up again in those conditions 🤣. I dunno if you have tried the Kestrel d1 drop? It’s a temperature logger that you can connect to via Bluetooth and it’s really good, so I had that outside often and can check the temp on my phone and it logs it over whatever time gaps you want. Then have the kestrel 2000 for wind and chill. True on the axe and highly recommend walkers newer to it take at least micro spikes on winter walks even when it looks alright in the car park. Wanting to head out today, it’s blowing a hoolie though, we shall see! Appreciate you watching 🙌🏼👍

The Gortex socks (which are bloody brilliant!) are best found on eBay www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Stretch-MVP-Gore-Tex-Sock-Liners-Pick-Your-Size-Still27-/353567459506?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l6249&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0 I would go a size up. 👍

    Cracking video. Impressive to get out in such weather. How do you manage to fit all the winter gear in a single 38l pack?

    • @OutdoorIntrigue
      @OutdoorIntrigue  2 роки тому

      Cheers for watching! Glad you enjoyed it, love a bit of winter I do ❄️. As for fitting it all in a small pack, it’s practice and a gradual reduction in how much you carry. You’d be surprised how many things people take that they don’t need. Then the step after that is get a light and where possible compact sleep system and just be thoughtful about your kit 👌🏼 Hope you watch some more of our vids, and look forward to seeing you in the comments again mate. 🙏

    You sure a 10mm will fit with a 9 mm in the Akto?
    When I asked hilleberg about the anjan 2, which may be different, they said "You can use double 9 or a 10 mm pole"

    • @OutdoorIntrigue

      Ha! They are noisy buggers if you don’t replace them! I used some simple cordage, I think it was 2mm dyneema, but can be anything that’s not to big really.

    • @OutdoorIntrigue
      @OutdoorIntrigue  Рік тому

      What a ridiculous comment 😂. It’s extremely useful for those conditions when used as a walking tool, plunging the tip gives you a firm support. The fact the snow is fluffy and there is turf which is frozen is fairly common conditions. Ice axes aren’t just for ice 🧊 mate.

    • @northernswedenstories1028
      @northernswedenstories1028 Рік тому

      @@OutdoorIntrigue better just to use hiking poles with pointed tip in that case. Never seen anyone use an ice axe like that in such conditions in all my years climbing in Sweden, Norway and Scotland.

    • @OutdoorIntrigue
      @OutdoorIntrigue  Рік тому

      @@northernswedenstories1028 You’ve Never seem someone use an ice axe for walking in snowy conditions??? It’s pretty common mate. Hiking poles are great but give you nowhere near as much purchase or plunge depth, you also can’t self arrest with poles. Turf and snow are often just as dangerous as ice, it’s basically what’s called mixed conditions. Thanks for the criticism though I disagree, maybe you could be more constructive in your communications in future, people tend to respond better to less of a shitty tone.
