Great info! One spin I do when making cornbread, which I love making in a cast iron skillet or pan, I preheat the skillet in the oven, about 20 minutes so it's thoroughly hot, then a couple minutes before I'm ready to bake my cornbread I put about 1-2 tbs of butter in the pan, pop it back in the oven until the butter is melted and hot (don't burn the butter though!) Hello Patricia! Cornmeal can be made from pretty much any dried corn. It is normally made from yellow or white Dent corn which is a common ground/field corn. Lots of deercorn or feed corn is that same type of corn, so it will definitely work for homemade cornmeal. In fact popcorn kernels aren't normally used for cornmeal, it is just a substitute, when you don't have access to field corn. Here in the States, normal cornmeal is super plentiful and easy to buy, but a lot of countries don't have it, but for some reason they do have popcorn kernels, haha.
It depends on the type of corn flour. Here in the States corn flour is the same as Cornstarch which is not the same as corn meal so you can't make the substitution. If your corn flour is just finely ground corn that should work.
Wow why didn't I see this before, running around trying to find cornmeal (norway.....) and at last I did but had to walk loooong with my injured knee. Auuuu! If I saw this video before it would be sooo much easier. Btw, the reason why I need cornmeal is because I try to make my first ever corn dogs, and I follow your recipe!! :) Thanx for very informative and useful videos!

You can just use the corn grits as is, but yes if you would like to further refine them, throw them in the food processor or high speed blender for 30 seconds to a minute or so.
Yeah, I wouldn't do it too often, it very well could dull the blades in the food processor if done all the time. A specific wheat or corn grinder would be better for long term use.
I used to do the same using our 80's Moulinex coffee & spice mill because in Iraq after the "desert storm" and the siege we've been forced to obey, corn flour was not existed ... Have a nice day

Hi Patricia you would get the same amount. The weight doesn't change by grind it up. :) If you are going to make that much, don't use a food processor. Use an actual food/grain mill.
Yes you sure can, that is what I do in this video, except I use popcorn kernels. You can take "feed" corn or just take fresh corn and cut off the kernels from the cob and dehydrate them, then grind then down into cornmeal. :)
I tried to grind whole feed corn in my Cuisinart food processor. Ten minutes of grinding one cup.I got a teaspoon of ground meal. I gave up when the food processor got hot.
hmm, I have tried whole feed corn, only popcorn kernels. Popcorn kernels are pretty darn hard, but it still works in my food processor. The other option would be to get a hand crank mill, which will grind up that feed corn. Something like this amzn.to/2Xt8vvp But if you live in a place where cornmeal is readily available, just buy that. It is fun making it at of popcorn and then baking with it, though!
Yep if you own a coffee grinder use that, I mention that in the written recipe version of this. The best thing to use is a food mill, specifically meant for milling and grinding wheat, corn, etc. I don't own a coffee grinder because I don't drink coffee.
Thumb up for the "bonus" tag on making cornbread. And yes, I have friends who live in countries that do not have access to cornmeal, nor access to Amazon or postal delivery system and have lugged some cornmeal bags for them to haved when I have visited thjem.. This is from popcorn kernels. If you are going to grow corn, there is a specific kind that you grow for popcorn. Although for cornmeal, you can grow any corn, dry out the kernels and then make cornmeal with it.
Thank you, have been wanting to make cornbread for ages but can't find the cornmeal in Ireland, and its very expensive to order it from Amazon. Also I see you have a video for corndogs and definitely trying that recipe too

It certainly can dull the blades if you do it all the time. I don't recommend this method for all the time use, but if you are in a pinch and need cornmeal, it works great. If you really plan on grinding your own corn for cornmeal, I recommend buying field corn and a specific hand crank mill.
Hi there! Pretty much any type of dried corn should work just fine. You can even take fresh corn and dehydrate it and then grind it up. :) In fact all of those are probably a little better to use than popcorn kernels. But popcorn may be easier for some people to find.
That looks painful 😅 do yourself a favor and use a blender especially if you have a Vitamix. I love to process my own stuff instead of buying multiple e.g grinding granulated sugar into icing sugar
Yes if you have a 400 dollar Vitamix that will work great. :) haha But a food processor works as well, and is much much cheaper or a coffee grinder which I mention in the video. I have a "homemade powdered sugar/icing sugar" video on here as well, haha. Definitely fun making your own ingredients. Chances are if the person lives in a country where they can't buy cornmeal they probably won't own a Vitamix or Blentec or another expensive super powerful blender. And yes, I have friends who live in countries that do not have access to cornmeal, nor access to Amazon or postal delivery system and have lugged some cornmeal bags for them to haved when I have visited thjem.. Now, It will be easier just to take some bags of popcorn with the extra nice advantage of being able to have popped corn.
Thank you!! :) Yeah interesting enough I have found some countries that don't have access to cornmeal do have access to popcorn, which I find odd, haha. But either way, I hope it is helpful for some people. Nice of you to bring them cornmeal!
Thank you so much...i couldnt find the cornmeal but i will try tour recipe, blessings and thanks to share!!!
You are very welcome, Nadia!! Glad it was helpful for you. :) :)
Can this be used for rolling pizza bases?
This can be used the same way regular cornmeal is used. :)
@@inthekitchenwithmatt you are a saviour :))) thanks for this awesome hack :) corns are available but cornmeal isn’t where I live.
@@Madame686 You are welcome!!
Can we use this grinded corn for making baby cereal? How do we use sweet corn for baby cereal?
Hello, I have no experience making baby cereal. This grounded popcorn can be used in any recipe that calls for cornmeal.
Great idea!
Thank you!! :)
Thank u in South Africa we cant get corn meal but will use your idea.
You are welcome!
Old time pottery store has a nice 2 pk strainer set that would serve you well.
I like to double sift my meal
Nice!
Thanks u saved my time in my country i cant find cornmeal easily
You are welcome!!
Deercorn
Thanks a million for this video. I'm doing this before next week runs out
You are very welcome!
What type of corn i want to know what corn i need to grow
This is from popcorn kernels. If you are going to grow corn, there is a specific kind that you grow for popcorn. Although for cornmeal, you can grow any corn, dry out the kernels and then make cornmeal with it.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt thank ye
@@fish7515 You are welcome!
I'll bet that cornbread really tastes good with some honey butter on top.
Yes honey and butter is always good on cornbread. :)
Is a blender ok to use?
You can always try it, some blenders are not as powerful enough. You can try a coffee grinder too if you have one of those.
Thank you, have been wanting to make cornbread for ages but can't find the cornmeal in Ireland, and its very expensive to order it from Amazon. Also I see you have a video for corndogs and definitely trying that recipe too
You are very welcome!! Yes, popcorn kernels work well in a pinch, but if you can find normal dried field corn that is the best to use, but may be harder to find. :) Good luck and let me know how it turns out! Awesome, those corn dogs are yummy!
@@inthekitchenwithmattthe same corn that sold in places that sell livestock feed?
Yep, as long as it is clean and dried you can grind it up and eat it as cornmeal.@@CrystalRuizEnriquez
Wow,, cornmeal was a good worm food.
But wait, Corndog uses Cornmeal? Now it make sense, I thought it was Bread crumbs.
Again its hard finding corn meal in my country we didn't use it much
Yep that is where the "corn" in corndogs comes from. :)
@@inthekitchenwithmatt Wow,, i just research about Worm farm, and cornmeal is good worm food.
But i got solve one of the biggest mistery in my head, hahaha.
Thank you very much sir. God bless you.

Does this damage the blades of the food processor? Love the idea!
It certainly can dull the blades if you do it all the time. I don't recommend this method for all the time use, but if you are in a pinch and need cornmeal, it works great. If you really plan on grinding your own corn for cornmeal, I recommend buying field corn and a specific hand crank mill.
Very good video.... Thanks I luv Cornbread. 💜💜
Thank you!!
In South Africa we call it Maize meal... Its used in snacks at the shop, in porridges and pap with is a side to food.
Yes, Maize is the same name as corn :)
We used maize and normal corn very differently, even with the snacks and stuff
Hi can we use this to make pizza base?
You can put this on the bottom of the pizza, but I wouldn't put it in the dough itself.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt ok thank you 😊
@@NoorKhan-jh4rw You are welcome!!
Can i use fodder corn?
Hi there! Pretty much any type of dried corn should work just fine. You can even take fresh corn and dehydrate it and then grind it up. :) In fact all of those are probably a little better to use than popcorn kernels. But popcorn may be easier for some people to find.
Thanks for sharing. Going to try this.
You are welcome, Margaret! Let me know how it turns out. :)
Omg cornmeal is so hard to find here thank you so much
You are very welcome!! :)
Perfect mike Thanks 👍got sharing you way of making 👍
Thanks! Matt not Mike :)
Last resort, a mortar, and pestle! haha
@@inthekitchenwithmatt mortar and pestle hahaha. Unless you have the stone one with 'mechanical arm'? Lol. Every continent grows a variety of corn though. Can't figure out why it would be unavailable! Commercial Millers ship worldwide too huh? Will check out your other videos. Found you coz I have a lot of corn meal but not a lot recipes! Just know how to make yellow corn bread and White corn meal (Ugali in Kenya). Any suggestions? Lol
@@thisismarge LOL I know right? But I have gotten so many people reply to my corn dog video, and say they can't find cornmeal where they live. But they can find popcorn kernels, which is so weird. I am guessing shipping would be expensive, but yeah they should be at least able to buy it from Amazon or something, haha. And thank you! Corn dogs and Cornbread are definitely my favorite things to make with cornmeal.
GREAT THANK YOU
You are welcome!
Hello is it okay to use blender to grind the corn kernels?
If your blender is powerful enough, that will probably work. A coffee grinder will probably work as well.
So cool
Thank you!
use deer corn. make corn powder
make corn bread.
welcome to living off the land
Definitely can use a different corn, like deer or field corn that is preferred, but most people don't have that in their house. :)
Nice love it yum
Thanks!!
Great, can white corn be used for cornmeal?
