    Great choice on killing off Shaw. Cause if there is anything Aliens fans love it's killing a previously established character offscreen in a silly anticlimactic way after they have survived a ton of shit in the last film.

    PS: The planet David bombs is most likely NOT the Engineer's home planet (described as "Paradise" by Ridley Scott). Several clues point to them being another race created by the Engineers. The fact that they all assemble in one arena and cheer upon the arrival of a single ship, there is no technology on the planet other than a docking station, they barely resemble the Engineers we saw in Prometheus, and the colony itself looks like ancient Rome (with not a single communication tower or any air defense system). Also the fact that David is clearly stranded on the planet hints that there are no other ships available for him to use, thus he tricks the Covenant into landing with a distress signal originating from the Derelict ship he crashed. I don't think we've seen the Engineer's planet yet, and this is confirmed by Damon Lindelof who says Ridley Scott's idea for Paradise is nothing like what we saw in Covenant.

      Thank you!
      It's like people can't really follow logic anymore.
      Looking at these Proto-Engineers I think it is also very evident why the real Engineers wanted to exterminate humans. We didn't evolve how they wanted us to (into Proto-Engineers), and like the invasive weed in any gardener's flower bed it must be plucked out by the roots to ensure that it doesn't overgrow the desired cultivars.

    Interesting Biblical section at the end. The reason Weyland orders David to bring him some tea is because David quickly discerns that he is immortal and Weyland isn't, Weylands shonky human ego doesn't like this bare fact and he tries to regain control of his impending doom by ordering a steaming mug. Which was probably Davids first clue that humans are ridiculous. Great Video :)

      Most of them even. If they all died in an event as simple as crashing while trying to land i na storm three people would be left in charge of the entire operation. Oh and if that happened they would've lost what was apparently their ONLY shuttle. Maybe send the durable expendable android that can't get infected with diseases down there first?

  • @jasondouglas152

    I think the Engineer plan for any race they created getting to that planet was 1 of 2 things.
    1. If they reached that much technology, they'd be accepted into the engineer race and granted a longer life.
    2. If you go too far and explore the galaxy , you will be destroyed for questioning your existence and then the entire race would be wiped out.
    ...
    From the engineer/ Weyland scene in Prometheus, I'm guessing it's my 2nd theory. ( or something else entirely)
    That what I love about Prometheus, it makes me ask questions and have to come up with new / different answers.

    For me the scariness of Covenant wasn't the jump scares and slimy aliens. The scariness was David's sick sexual abomination dreams. His unholy mixing of Shaw, who he said he loved, with devil octopus henti.
    I got the same feeling in my gut seeing the drawings in the scroll room of his dreams that I get when you hear about the worst serial killers. Like not only do they kill, but they played with the bodies.
    David played with the bodies

    • @tri3183
      @tri3183 7 років тому +5

      Lmao David was a sick fuck. If he did that to someone he supposedly loved, everyone is in for it 😂

    • @fuzzyfennec7493
      @fuzzyfennec7493 7 років тому +1

      Absolutely agree. The creepy sketches of shaw's face with the missing jaw and alien-like thingys coming out was the only scary imagery. The fact that David loved her and then did all these twisted things to her. Kinda like the Jack Nicholson in the Shining... the idea of someone who loves you and you love back, but they lose their mind and want to do messed up things... that's truly scary.

    • @tri3183
      @tri3183 7 років тому +1

      BLUE LED I think David isn't able to truly feel or convey love, though he is capable of understanding it conceptually, he was never able to reconcile those two things. Whether that's a byproduct of artificial intellience or a malfunction I'm not sure.

  • @pluckyduck11y
    @pluckyduck11y 7 років тому +11

    Facts that NEED to be established for posterity to address the biggest grievances of those "outraged" by this movie:
    1) David did not wipe out the Engineers.
    1a. The people we see him annihilate didn't even look the same as the Engineers we saw in Prometheus.
    1b. Developing theory is they were another subsequent race created by the Engineers, like humans, but closer to the Engis' likeness. Compare functional design differences between mystery civilization and us vis a vis Engineers, to those between David and Walter vis a vis humans.
    1c. Even if they were Engineers (questionable) it is highly dubious David wiped them all out. There must be more out there.
    2) David did NOT originate the xenomorph.
    2a. Just because we see him evidently create an ovamorph (egg) does not mean he was the first to do it. Engineers could still have done it tens of thousands of years before.
    2b. It is clear David learned things from being on board the Engineer's ship
    2c. Keen eyes have pointed out the less biol-mechanical appearance of the "xeno" (ostensibly) in Covenant. It appears slightly more organic with more muscly sinew and ligature, and behaves slightly differently too, e.g. faster gestation. This could make sense because the original organic matter it spawns from was samples of Shaw's body. Whereas the classic xeno from Alien 1979 is from an engineer who seem to have fused bio and mechanical, OR -
    Fun new theory: we will find out that the classic xeno comes from David himself. I think he may be the original "space jockey" from Alien, after evolving biomechanically, growing larger to match his god-complex in the next chapters.
    What do you guys think?

    • @wv5566
      @wv5566 7 років тому +1

      spot on about the creation of the xenomorph, like yeah he may have 'created' them in a loose sense, but its more recreation, and the biggest tell of that being the case is the beginning piano scene where he reinterprets "entry of the gods into valhalla" to piano, along with his general unhinged brain which attributed the wrong author to Ozymandias. He thinks its Byron (himself) but its really Shelley (engineers) in that regard.

    • @pluckyduck11y
      @pluckyduck11y 7 років тому +2

      You can take it or leave it though. IMO what Scott is doing with these prequels is way better than any of the post-Aliens stuff. And also way better than the inevitable Alien reboot that you already know FOX so avariciously craves. I know they are flawed, yet they remain the most interesting expansions on this franchise since 1986.
      I admire the ambition and am with Scott all the way. What I'm thinking is that David becomes godlike, capable of increasing his form factor as well as evolving AI - becoming even larger and more powerful than the Engineers depicted in Prometheus. This could explain why the space jockey in Alien is substantially larger than any of the Engineers. People assume the original space jockey from Alien to be an engineer. I think it's David after going through some kind of evolution we'll see in the next film.
      This will also explain why the classic xenomorph is more biomechanical - because it spawned from an semi-organic android, rather than the xeno we see in Covenant, which is more organic.
      I think there could be a big battle between the returning Engineers who may ultimately have to ally with humans to take on David and his army of xenomorphs and other abominations.
      And remember, there's also the theory that the Engineers were always divided amongst themselves into two camps: one which favored the humans, and one which sought their eradication.

    • @pluckyduck11y
      @pluckyduck11y 7 років тому +2

      Exactly. I pointed this out too in other threads. They clearly want to demonstrate that David is flawed and not infallible. Reason it is good to emphasize the point you make about David mis-attributing that poem (song?) is that it hints that David might have also been mistaken in who he was bombing, presuming it was the Engineers, when it could really be another subsequent race spawned by them. This is an ingenious misdirect and really rewarded repeat viewing of both Prometheus and Covenant. There are layers to these movies yet to be revealed.

    here is my take on why ridley scott still tries so hard, it is really simpel but if you have ever tried to create art you may relate to this:
    Aliens and Blade Runner are THE two most successfull movies of his career in terms of "this will continue to move people after i pass away." but they are famous not for his direction. But the amazing designs of their world. Alien 1 and Blade Runner are amazing worlds that completly capture the ideas of the concept artist behind them who in the long run will be remembered over ridley scott.
    H.R Geiger and Syd Mead, and knowing this eats away at ridley.
    I'm a concept artist and looking up to these guys just hoping to be as influencial or even as good as these guys is what i thrive for, not being even 1% as good as them makes me angry at myself, drives me to put out more and better myself.

    I think after covid we kind of now understand that there WILL be that stupid guy who hides the zombie bite, who gets everyone in the 'safe zone' killed, and nerds have been WRONG, complaining about 'THAT GUY' for years.
    What I'm interested in, is, if that's the Engineers homeworld. WHAT if, it's a bit like Earth in the Dune universe? They had this vast interstellar empire, conducted horrific biological warfare on a scale we can't understand, but their homeworld, was largely irrelevant in the grand designs of their empire. So it wasn't as advanced and was more dependant on, or even worshipped those who did go to space and fly around.

    I think without seeing some of the promotional extra scenes it really hurts the viewing experience. The one with the crew helps with character development and the other fills in the blank omg what happened to Shaw and David.
    Another huge red flag was when Ridley Scott was bragging about making the film on a tight budget. When you hear a director bragging about that it does not bode well.

    I always thought the black goo in Prometheus was a bio-accelerant, an everyday tool used for a number of purpose Ex: terraforming,, accelerated healing/adaptation and others. A gift from the Engineers to humanity that could end all disease and famine if used right. Like acetylene torch not meant to harm but in the hands of a child all it can do is harm. The Engineers left it on a distant planets in hopes that when we were advanced enough to reach it we would be wise enough to use it.

      Roby the MythosMan I thought Prometheus was too unrealistic about a plot why I mean humans from the aliens it's so far apart in believability. And then that Old doctor actually wants to go and bring one of them things back to life? This guy is clearly way past retirement I mean what the fuck he opens the clear coffin isn't the thing bites off his face despite his nose or something. Hah. I may not remember it right but it was freaky fer sure! That alien didn't even wait to get an introduction, "hi thanks for releasing me from my 5000 year sleep, my name is engineer Bob & im freakin hungry ah uh ohhhh..."
      The engineers & human theories were just way too out there with not enough story woven in to make sense. It just made these people seem like idiots for going through it. Making friends with an alien in these films is when you know your scientist dad has dementia.

    My guess is, David is the dead space jockey in Alien. He sacrificed himself to birth an alien Queen that went on to lay all the eggs. That's why the aliens of the original series are biomechanical: the perfect synthesis of organic life and synthetic.

    I just love when Faris (the pilot of the drop ship) panicks and then gets a gun against the alien and basically runs with a loaded gun, slips on a pool of blood and shoots the ceiling :D that was such a slapstick that I thought I'm gonna die of laughter :D this entire moment with Fairs killed me :D her smashed ankle, falling from the stairs and next shooting the alien like "just shoot it and don't worry about those oxygen or other gas cylinders or other vital parts of the ship". Those people were trained for 10 years and well... they could as well give those money to the charity, because if fate of humanity depends on such people...

    Ridley Scott is trying to tell a huge biblical story in what is effectively just a space monster movie. To schizoid - one moment David is making pompous speeches about creativity and the next moment someone is being face-fucked by an alien. At least Aliens vs Predator new what it was trying to be (not much) and didn't try too hard to have greater pretensions.

  • @iminabrons

    I've not found any reference to Shaw actually coming out of her cryogenic chamber alive or even conscious. This may explain David's actions in destroying the inhabitants. The reason maybe that something happened to Shaw and even though she was alive she may have been brain dead from an incompatibility with the chamber. This then caused David to take revenge.

    Ridley invalidated every previous alien film, including his own, with Alien Covenant. No queen, cause fuck Cameron, no AVP (which was fair enough), and original alien cause that engineer (with the burst outward chest) was FOSSILISED! ergo, those eggs were old, far older than a few years, long enough for the ship and engineer corpse to fossilise.
    Loved your Ripley essay and made me re-evaluate the man, but he still must have read these two scripts and and thought them good...

    • @nerostark4320

      Tony Paulazzo if you remember in the movie, Oram asks David what the Ovomorphs are waiting and he says "a Mother". i think that the Queen will appear in the next movie. also i think that that the planet of this movie is not the real engineers planet, because the inhabitants looked different. and also i think David didnt create the xenomorph, but recreated by learning more about the enginners.

    • @wv5566
      @wv5566 7 років тому

      yeah nothing that happened in prometheus/covenant outright rejects a queen, and they still havent fully addressed exactly what happened with original space jockey. Also as far as "fossilization" goes, that wasn't exactly proven, was just dallas saying “Alien life form…Looks like its been dead a long time…. Fossilized. Looks like its grown out of the chair." He didnt definitely determine anything with making that observation, so maybe it was, maybe it wasnt, but again - nothing has been explicitly explained or shown regarding the original space jockey's origin. We know it shares similarities to the engineers in appearance, similarity in style of ship, had eggs in its cargo that created a similar creature to the one seen in covenant (main difference is biomech features in alien, not seen in covenant xeno) but no definitive "this space jockey species is {blank} and arrived because of {blank}" We can make educated guesses, but i'll wait to see what they do to ultimately get there, before i dismiss everything with limited information.

    • @TonyPaulazzo
      @TonyPaulazzo 7 років тому

      I went back and watched Alien (for the first time in years) and you're right, it was more an observation and my memory was mixed up with Giger interviews about that room. Giger had envisioned the ship and pilot as biomechanoid in nature (flesh on top of the bones on both ship and character which had decayed after thousands of years). As for the queen, I guess Ridley is gonna answer that age old question: Which came first; the egg or the hen? Peace.

    As dumb as AvP is, it at least had the decency to NOT kill any major characters from other films offscreen. So bonus points vs Covenant and Alien 3. Plus, it had Lance Henriksen. Alien Covenant has zero Lance Henriksen. The quality of an Alien franchise sequel is proportional to the percentage of Lance Henriksen, which is why Aliens is the best sequel, it had the highest percentage of Lance Henriksen.

After that, he equalled his directing output from the previous 23 years in the next ten years, and hasn't slowed down since. Something changed or clicked in for him. All he said about it was, that he thought he had worked too slowly in years past.

    I've realized that Covenant is a giant condescending "fuck you" from Ridley Scott to the fans and critics of the Alien films. It feels as if David and Walter are the devil and angel, respectively, on Scott's shoulders throughout the film. One telling him that the audience is worthy of consideration and the other telling him that they're garbage and not worthy at all.
    The last few minutes of Covenant tell us all we need to know, and confirm that Scott ignores Walter and aligns with David's attitudes. The last scene is, quite literally, Ridley Scott telling the audience and critics that he's offered you the goodwill of another Alien film, but now he's pivoting the series and turning it into something different; something he tried to do with Prometheus but everybody just wanted another rehashed Alien film.
    The last few minutes are Scott saying: "these are my films, this is my world, and you are just along for the ride. Deal with it."

    We probably haven't seen the last of the Engineers. It's confirmed that David killed a different race - note their pinker skin, more human features and human eyes, and how they reacted to the arrival of the juggernaut. The planet in Covenant was likely a pit stop for David to mess around and perfect his weapon before heading for the Engineer home world with the Covenant. Or something. Who knows!

    23:20 YES!! That's what was great about the original Alien. They all wore helmets and protective gear. Ripley tries to enforce quarantine, but is over-ridden by Ash, who has his own private agenda with the company. That one character does something dumb, by letting the cat go, which will set off the tracker again, but his buddy immediately tells him he's an idiot. Believable characters. Why is it so hard to write?
    Covenant is completely antithetical to the original. When a character dies, you feel absolutely nothing. Nothing was even remotely scary or thrilling about it. Yeah, David was a cool, evil robot, and the visuals were nice, but that's all it has going for it.

    • @JakezZz1911
      @JakezZz1911 7 років тому +1

      Nanna Leifa because he most likely wasn't the only one that created them. Even in the Alien movies there were different species of the xenos. Alien 1 and isolation has xenos that used hosts to create eggs (no queen). Alien 2 had a hive set up and alien 3 had a dog version (or a cow depending on what version you see). Alien resurrection had some weird human live birth etc. Point is, David created a type of xeno. The engineer ship that Ripley and the crew found in Alien 1 looks like it has been there a lot older than 18 years (Covenant takes place 2109, Alien takes place 2122) meaning the xenos there were most likely created from someone else or from a different group of engineers. or that's how I see it anyway unless Ridley Scott tries to link the two series directly in the next movie.

    • @JakezZz1911
      @JakezZz1911 7 років тому +1

      Dimi Done oh sorry I meant what the face hugger grabbed. one version (common) it was the dog. but in another version it was a cow (directors or extended). Xeno still looks the same in both versions but the point was more that there have been different "species" of the xenos in both series so David the droid most likely isn't the original creator of the xeno. I know I'm grabbing at straws here but it's the way I see it.

    • @nannaleifa

      I think it's pretty much impossible trying to connect the new Alien franchise to the original movie without plot holes/retcon at this point. Unless someone would came out with good explanation of why the technology of the original Alien looks significantly behind the times despite being the future of Alien Covenant and still presumably on the same continuity.
      Well, the new films are basically soft reboot anyway, so no more questions right? Just like the new Star Trek!

  • @hollandscottthomas
    @hollandscottthomas 7 років тому +9

    I still maintain that both this and PROMETHEUS would have been much better served if they were unrelated to the ALIEN franchise. Sure, keep Weyland-Yutani, but don't involve the xenomorphs because explaining that they were purpose-made undermines the cosmic, unknowable nature of them and actively makes the older movies WORSE.

    • @4Everlast
      @4Everlast 6 років тому

      No question about it. But the only way this thing would be greenlitt is if it's tied to the Alien franchise (as studio smelled sepparate trilogy franchise potential) and more importantly Ridley based it all on the question we were all asking oure selfs who the hell is the big guy in the "chair" in Alien, of course we didn't need the answer, cause it ruins the mystery and ruined the mystery is exactly what they did, turning a creepy giant advanced humanoid (notice atleast 2-3 times LARGER than the pale bodybuilder we got in Prometheus) into a midnless killing mashine, unintresting AF. And to breake something that was broken allready, they crowbarred this potential wonderfull SF film into an Alien prequal. And if ruining 1 great character wosn't enough they pritty much made David the creator of the queen and the xeno (obviously they forgot we allready saw a xeno in the Prometheus mural, talk about idiotic and total disreguard of continuation). x(

    The best part for me of Comic girls review of this movie is the Biblical symbolism and Ridley Scott's internal struggle of god and creation. It was fascinating to hear comic girl talk about it. I had no idea it could get deep.
