- PSVR2. PlayStation VR2. PlayStation Virtual Reality, the second. All words that mean the same thing. A thing I’ll talk about today.
Yes, it is rather convenient that this released within a few minutes of the State of Play isn’t it?

Really a missed opportunity to call the original PSVR ‘Project Morbius’, it would’ve sold a morbillion units.
It would have surely made it one of the headsets of all time.
Humanity is not ready to experience that level of Morbiusity.
40 years old. Watching VR evolve since the heady days of the Console Wars.
Seeing the Virtual Boy then the Google Cardboard to the Quest 2. Our future may be boring dystopia but at least we have VR finally.
Imagine being 40, what a boomer, I'm never going to be 40
42 me mate!
@@theonlybilge You clearly don't know what a boomer is.

Really? Do you think I might have been joking considering I wrote "I'm never going to be 40"?
Eye tracked foveated rendering is basically the most important thing to have in VR, in my opinion. If they've properly achieved that, then graphics of the same quality as flatscreen gaming are easily possible. The next standalone/PCVR headset I buy MUST have this.
I tend to agree, in that fidelity is an obvious key aspect to immersion.
However, dev's need to step up, so in game we can manipulate the environment more.
Basically, immersion is multifaceted. Just adding more bling isn't enough

@@deanobeany "A new Generation of Watchers"💀...
Also his other channel is now called Knowledge *_Husk_* which I mean yeah😷
As long as it's near or below the price of a next Gen console I think that's pretty affordable. The PS5 already offers Ray Tracing and a high speed ssd for 500 bucks which is way lower than any PC with the same specs. So 400 dollars for a proper up to date experience would be a really entry cost friendly price at least for most people interested in VR stuff.
Damn he made this one quick as fuck.
I randomly went to my local Gamestop shortly after the original PSVR released and they were doing a PSVR demo. It was my first time trying VR and I was blown away. Ended up getting one a few months later and it ruled. Over time though, the controllers became ridiculously frustrating. They lost tracking ridiculously easily and the lack of an analogue stick was insane. The extreme limitation made me putt down VR for a few years but I got a Quest 2 a few months back and I love it. VR is so damn cool and it's awesome that we have legit games in VR nowadays (compared to what was essentially just tech demos in the past). I'm excited to see what Sony can do with new hardware and controllers that actually had VR in mind when they were being developed.
Sony's biggest mistake with PSVR was using those stupid move controllers instead of making proper VR controllers. The games that allow you to use the Aim with full movement are so much fun because it has a analogue stick. The camera was the second biggest mistake, they should've used a better one for that purpose or two cameras because it can be a pain to get the camera right and you have a pretty small area that you can move in without losing tracking.
green lights could of helped
I'm glad they're again going with the halo design. The first PSVR was arguably the most comfortable headset on the market!
Agreed - I hate the mash against your face design of so many of the headsets.
i think this will be my first official dive into VR ownership, assuming i can secure a ps5 before it releases.
And assuming you can secure a PSVR2 as well. It's bound to be bought out by scalpers day 1.
@@SwirlyTwirl I think there is a real chance you will be able to easily buy a psvr2 before a ps5, assuming stock does not improve.
@@whatsup89100 I believe that the stock for the PSVR2 will be much much less than current PS5 stock. Which is why i strongly believe you won't have any easier time getting either of them.
Just buy a Quest 2, or wait til the quest 3 comes out
Just want *PS Home* to come back with this whole metaverse VR movement.
"I want the PlayStation to output a 3rd person view for anyone watching on the TV when someone is in VR. That would cut down on motion sickness for the TV viewers. Another alternative is to output a really wide view, something more generally fun for the people watching would be ideal.
" - Harrison Ford
That involves rendering a great deal more. I think some sort of motion stabilization would be more realistic. Like crop the image and do digital stabilization in real time.
I’m no tech expert, but that doesn’t seem feasible. The only way the PS5 will be able to hit these top range graphics is by being very selective with what it renders. Eg, using the eye tracking to reduce render load on what the player isn’t looking at. A third person view would mean the game must render even what the player isn’t seeing, greatly reducing performance.

It's interesting to compare my experience with PSVR vs. someone who got it at launch. I picked mine up for $280 CDN (about $220 USD) in 2018, with two great games, the necessary camera, no Move controllers but I already owned them so no big deal. I was able to buy a whole bunch of great PSVR games super cheap during sales. Now by the end of it's life, I've got over 80 games for it and I've had a blast.
It definitely has problems though. You can tell it was cobbled together with old tech. I guess Sony had to get rid of those unsold Move controllers and 3D Cameras somehow (not the PS Eye, btw). I'm really excited for PSVR 2, since every component was built from the ground up for VR. Eye tracking has a ton of potential. I should point out though that the Unity devs had two benchmarks for eye tracking + foveated rendering. The 3.6x performance boost was in a really simple scene, where a highly detailed scene that was closer to an actual gameplay example only gave a 2.3x boost. Still, that's very substantial. Based on the footage of RE8 and Horizon Call of the Mountain that Sony just showed off, I think PSVR 2 games will look nearly as good as flat PS5 games.
It is a shame I won't be able to play mods on it, but I'll gladly trade that for the ease of use and well-optimised exclusives.
Fairly new to the channel, but I enjoyed this video. Gonna go check out some of your other stuff.
My son really wanted the first psvr and while we don't use it often, it's certainly been way more fun than I initially thought it would be. We're both pretty excited for v2. Between the much simpler setup with a single plug in, better controls, no mounted camera, and best of all the power of a ps5, it's going to be pretty fun.
There was some software for PC that I never got to work called Trinus. It literally just let you use a PSVR headset on PC. Now, I'm hoping a much better program like that can be released for PSVR 2 because it would be much easier to setup than the original one, but also it would be much simpler to use.

I’ve never had a VR set before, I think I’m gonna grab one this time for PS5
Your mind will both be blown away by how far it already is, and how far it has to go.
Did you stop watching the state of play as soon as soon as the VR segment was done and somehow got this out insanely fast?
I know they said they wanted to make PSVR be more 1st party focused. If big developers start putting effort into full games for VR on Playstation I think it'll become super popular
This video has aged like fine wine over the 8 months since this video has released, in damn well every way possible. From your estimated price tag (that it won't be cheap), the GDC coverage, the minimum of 20 titles on launch, and that the PSVR 2 does indeed have good specs for a VR headset.
Earned a sub. Can't wait to see what other content's on this channel.
"Not many games releasing after launch"... like Skyrim, Borderlands 2, NMS, Doom 3, Hitman trilogy... you gave up on your own, don't blame Sony. Still I mostly agree with you: select few big games ported over and few quite decent indies, it was mostly crap. Lenses fogging up are just a matter of leaving the headset warm up for awhile before wearing, cables are a one single setup that you hide away beyond the tv, resolution was pretty acceptable for 2016. Main problem was indeed limited tracking and crappy Move controllers. psvr2 is a much needed improvement and tech-wise at least it's able to afford much better and bigger games - but that remains to be seen...
I’m definitely buying it! Very excited!!!
I think the psvr1 headset is still very comfortable. And the screen looks good even though the resolution isn’t amazing.
The only problem is the poor tracking.
But there have been some awesome games!
I don't really care about VR in general, but I do care that you care, Tyler. I love videos where people talk about the things they're genuinely interested in. I love feeling people's sense of passion and their ability to make a topic I'd otherwise not care about entertaining regardless.

I loved my PSVR! Yeah it was a bit janky but it's probably still the most comfortable headset. Wipeout VR was just epic. And Astro Bot VR was super fun, I just hope the release Half Life Alyx on PSVR2. I definitely want to pick it up, as soon as I can find a PS5! The original had problems, yeah, but for what it was, it was very impressive and helped drive the medium forward. I've moved onto my quest 2 and loving that also. Kinda miss the LED screen though. For the resolution of the PSVR, the pixel density was pretty good, especially with super sampling. I was surprised at how crisp astro bot looked at times.

Threw my gaming pc in the bin at the start of 2020 when I bought a cheap ps4. Managed to snag a ps5 very early on and love it. Myself and my partner are hyped for psvr2 as it will be our first voyage into headsets.
I think it looks really promising and could potentially be a better headset than even a Quest 2 with a PC but one big problem in my opinion is the PS VR platform. Software is a real issue for VR, there is way too little of it. There are not that many "proper" games for VR as is and most of them are on some PC VR platform. Sony will have to address this in order to make PS VR work.
I don't think it has any potential to outsell the Quest 2 though, the Quest 2 probably targets a bigger market, being a standalone device and is most likely cheaper too (and I doubt that Sony is willing to loose nearly as much money as Meta is to expand their market share, so the PS VR 2 will cost more even if it costs the same price to produce). Playstation VR 2 doesn't have too accomplish that to be a success though. I doubt that Sony aspires to become the single industry leader in VR they just need to establish their own VR gaming platform on the Playstation and I think that could succeed.

Tbh I’ve really enjoyed the PSVR1, at first there weren’t that many games, but I bought it in 2018 when they started getting a lot more content
Sure, the low-resolution sucks, and the tracking isn’t the best, but when you are in an intense match of Firewall peeking around a corner to pull off a quick headshot,
or running away from a goo monster in RE7, you can’t help but get lost in it and momentarily forget that it’s even a game
This was a great video btw, and I can’t wait for the PSVR2, it was cool to hear an unbiased but well-informed opinion 👌🏾✌🏾
God, I hope you drop that song soon. I'm dying.
Meta Quest 2 nearly matched sales of XBox S|X last year. Yeah. If it's "niche" it won't be for long.
PSVR2 has definitely interested me. And I have never been into nor tried VR before. But I want to try this. If they can bring in noobies like me then for sure it's going to outsell the first one
Cool cool! Love yah vids bud.. Super on point. The last one about 360video Vs 6dof.. Man you should listen to some of my old podcasts from 2017. Totally spot-on.

I'm excited to get the 2nd gen of the PSVR. I quite liked the original with the right game. Me and my friend had a blast in EVE Valkyrie. Statik was quite the twister to the brain while catching some fish in the FFXV vr game was more fun distraction than anticipated. Favorite (if very short) was the Ace combat 7 experience.
I hope the PSVR2 headset is compatible with PCVR. Could be a killer to not be fully limited to one single platform of the PS5 and its subsequent future versions. There's a few VR titles on PC I'd like to try.

Still think it's a mistake to not have wireless adapter or have a pro version that's completely wireless right from the start. Using the quest 2 over 5ghz wifi has been so good for me I really don't want to go back to managing a cable while I'm trying to move around.

Several of the PSVR2 titles shown in today's State of Play have 2022 as their release date...
That hints at the headset coming out this year as well.
Recent game trailers tell you when they are in-game or cinematic rendering... mostly in game footage that I saw...
I felt so stupid buying the PS5 at its expensive, bundle of doom price a year ago. I didn’t the moment I played Demon Souls with the haptics. It is just so dang cool. Not my favorite ergonomics for a controller but I will accept it for haptics and adaptive triggers and all that.
I'm very eager to know when the date will be released and how much is it going to be.

with the specs shown off with the psvr 2, i'd be lying if i said i wasn't at least a little interested. it would be cool to see some sort of unofficial compatibility with pc to take advantage of that eye tracking on something like vrchat
love your videos dude your voice is very pleasant
PSVR was my gateway drug into VR. Playing SW Battlefront, Ace Combat and Gran Turismo Sport mini games just showed me the potential but yeah the PS4/Pro hardware did hamper things
Here's hoping GT7 gets an update for full VR support (not a mini game like the last instalment on PSVR)
For pricing it has to be $300-400 it has to both be lower than the machine and also compete price wise with oculus
Sounds sensible
It’s gonna be 450 or 500 dollars probably
Also give me the Spotify link for the outro song
I just can’t go back to wired headsets and the $1000 buy in is hefty
Sounds like you've perhaps confused the backwards compatibility situation around 06:12. Any compatibility for PSVR1 games running on the PSVR2 is currently unknown. PSVR1 is backwards compatible in that it works on a PS5 to play PS4 VR games but that's it. Your video gives the impression you could use a PSVR2 along with a camera and move controllers for older games but we have no evidence of this.

So based on its specifications, this is the best VR headset ever announced so far, this set of technologies even innovative or superior to others make it the best VR of the moment, better than the PCs even.

I am pretty excited for this... I bought an HTC Vive and really enjoyed it... Honestly though I am looking forward to the closed environment, I had too many issues, updating drivers, keeping everything running smooth, ect... I sold my Vive and said I would wait for PS5 hardware...
I pray every night for the Soundcloud to update
I just hope that it make developers more interested in making higher quality games and possible porting a few to pc and expanding the cross play of vr
Whatever happened to the headset that was supposed to project the image directly into the retina? (IIRC didn't it have Dream in the name?) All coverage of it kinda stopped/got drowned out with the Pimax, Index, etc.
Enjoyed the video and think your being to optimistic about psvr. Considering your point about the original trailers basically lying I don’t know why you would mention the new ones as a hopeful aspect of the new vr
I've been wondering why they haven't done eye tracking based rendering sooner. I mean, about half of all the resolution in our eyes is just within 1 degree of the center. So you could drastically decrease detail as you went further from the center of view and nobody could tell the difference.
Probably because precise eye-tracking at that level is hard and changing the quality of the render still needs some time. You don't want to show the user a blurry image for half a second every time they move their eyes.
@@allesarfint especially with the speed the eyes are moving, so yes I am pretty interested to see how well they managed it.
One of the main reasons I want PSVR2 is to replay the old games, the poor resolution was the reason I put those games down, I want to finish them but also want to see them
Playing Horizon in VR sounds like the DOPEST shit I ever did see and I'm in.
@@LexVVTiS300 there is one lol
@@LexVVTiS300 dont need to imagine. Iron man vr released back in 2020
@@LexVVTiS300 iron man vr is a full fledged game. Tf you talking about
The eye tracking is the most impressive thing. If it's implemented in all headsets going forward all games could look the same in and out of headset.
Unless they filed a patent
In which case we would have to wait for it to expire before seeing that
Gotta love capitalism
All I hope is that it can play Boneworks, which the developer seemed hopeful when they announced the controllers
glad to see pcvr2 finally coming out
Outro almost jumpscared me since i had such a high volume
This is really cool and all
I just wish we could have universal compatibility between all headsets
Like if I want to use my quest 2 I can use that if i want with PS5
I just like how flexible the quest 2 is
I like that its wireless
I like PC connectivity
I like standalone use aswell
And the price point is good
And if someone else has a quest theres always something we can play together
Pcvr or standalone
The amount of money and effort it takes to get a PS5
And the online subscription
And buying their new headset
Which only supports their software
And if it happens to flop sony is known to stop supporting platforms with content
Its really cool
But eventually it will be useless because eventually there will be a playstation without support for it
So youll need to keep old hardware around
I just think every platform should support the VR headset of your choice
Because
They make most of their money off the software anyway
Theyd make more money allowing other VR users on the platform
If I could afford one, I'd get one.
I hope the camera tracking of PSVR2 is good enough. Even though we had to use a camera for PSVR, it could see the Move controller if we held them down and behind us a little. PSVR2 might not be able to do that, so it could impact games like Beat Saber.
Never got the hate for the OG PSVR. Astro Bot was to VR platforming as Mario 64 was to 3D platforming, and it looked incredible to boot (on a Pro, at least). RE7 VR is nothing short of dark fucking witchcraft: it looks *far* too good for a console whose base specs are from 2013. And there were other good exclusives: Wipeout, Blood and Truth, Deracine, Rush of Blood, etc.
I got a bundle with the headset, 2 move controllers, the camera, and 5 games (RE7, Skyrim, Astro Bot, Worlds, and Everybody's Golf) for $250 USD. Unbelievable value for the price, and a great streamlined introduction for VR newcomers.
I mainly want it for Dreams. I also have been holding off on moving to the PS5 until a console revision and PSVR2 came out. Hoping a slimmer more modest potentially cheaper PS5 is coming soon. Eye tracking, proper controllers, and increased FOV are the top features I wanted. I prefer seated VR experiences. Stereo vision, depth of field, peripheral vision/FO,V and just being able to look around naturally where my main draws to VR. Motion controls I warmed up to for creative applications. I know I'm in the minority.
I love these videos. Same over on the husk.
Tyler when are we getting a VR headset scoring video? Using the same arbitrary scoring system as your other videos of course.
I'm honestly shocked that the foveal resolution dropoff wasn't already industry standard. I hadn't thought about it beforehand, but it really makes you realize that rendering the entire FOV is wasting a ton of computation since, y'know, you aren't looking at it.
If they make it compatible with PC through a cable like rhe quest 2 is, I believe it will sell extremely well
Can you do a psp related video.? There are occasionally rumors that is going to be remade or that it will continue. Anyway, for me and many more, the idea of playstation portable still rules in our minds.
I got the first PlayStation 4 VR. It's okay but if not all of that. I mean if you like motion sickness. Then it's right up your alley.
I'll wait to see what games come out, and how many
6:12 Is there any confirmation from Sony on the accuracy of this statement? Because little to no backwards compatibility from the original PSVR is a deal breaker for me.
0:43 this is NOT morbin'
cant wait it will be amazing
3:50 irregardless lol
Imma wait for the PSVR world engine time space continum reality bending machine that takes you into virtually created alternate worlds where your mind enters a body in that world and you can live and do stuff
I have the same thoughts especially since I bought the first VR !
Please put the outro song on your soundcloud!
What song is that at the end of the video? Thanks,
If it’s usable on PC it will be a no brainer for me.
It would be such a major selling point, I have no idea why they wouldn’t make it on PC in addition to PS5, but I’m still not counting on it.
I got the psvr like one year ago and I love it other then all the wires
I own the original PSVR with a standard PS4
IMO still a great way to get into VR without breaking the bank especially if you already own a PS4/PS5 just understand that it is an old headset but still lots of fun.
There is a decent library for PSVR as well as some exclusives that are a must play (astro bot)
I will definitely be getting a PSVR 2, but first I gotta get my hands on a PS5 lol (FML)
I resent myself for this, but I'm gonna say it anyway... "Irregardless" is not a word, just say "regardless"
I should have used my VR1 more often so I could tell my lady we need an upgrade.
Maybe the best VR experiences will be psvr 2 only. Since they will want to use all the power of the ps5 as much as possible and will have 60M units sold by the end of 2023 they could very well get PCVR players to buy a PS5 for the VR experience and games. Maybe they won't port VR games to the PC? I'm interested to see what happens
One correction. It does have finger tracking. They posted a video of it actually.
Going out of range from the PS Camera was the bane of my existence. Really glad they got rid of it.
It's price has to be public-acessible or it will never be mainstream
