    Valid point. No political affiliation, but a successful businessman and philanthropist. Also a diplomat. An interesting candidate, what is important now is that Tharman must heighten his mandate and accountability while George's intentions are more straightforward.

    i would rather vote for George than Tharman. If tharman loses this election, he will likely continue to serve the government where his skills will be of better use. We don't need a policymaker as president. George is at least more independent than Tharman. And George sounds sincere and capable, with good social skills.

      How can Tharman go back to all his relinquished positions after leaving them? He surely wouldn’t be able to go back to serve as a MP or senior minister role in the cabinet because that these positions are elected roles. It will also be unlikely for him to go back to his role as the Chairman of MAS because that role is usually appointed from within the senior leadership of the elected cabinet members. But since the next election is not too distant, he could either be re-elected as a board member of GIC first and elect as a MP again, or simply follow George Yeo’s footstep to enter private sector.
      Similarly by what you said, if George Goh loses the election, he could also go back to his private sector and probably go back to MFA serving as the non-resident ambassador or ambassador-at-large?
      We all know both men took risks leaving their high-profile roles to run for the presidency, and the one who loses the election would stand to lose the most. But I am worried for neither of them, because they are both super rich and can afford to retire immediately.

      But you have to be realistic. Although we know Tharman is far from being non-partisan, he has the vast knowledge in finance sector, capability to speak coherently in English and the reputation amongst people. This compared to Goh who nobody knows and can hardly speak coherently in English in front of the public. If we get to vote, my vote still goes to Tharman because I am voting for a capable person to be there. How effective and independent can Tharman be in providing a check and balance to the PAP-led government as an elected president?
    An examination of the tenure of Singapore’s first elected president, the late Mr Ong Teng Cheong, who is fondly remembered as the ‘People’s President’, may provide some perspective.
    Ong raised a “long list” of problems he had encountered in trying to protect past reserves.
    His repeated inquiries over three years resulted in piecemeal data and a compromise to only provide a list of governmental properties, not their actual values. Even after a long delay, the property list was incomplete, reflecting the difficulty he experienced in obtaining necessary transparency to effectively fulfil his duties.

    • @aero.l
      @aero.l Рік тому +2

      That was what people asked of Ong Teng Cheong before he was elected too. Tharman has shown himself to be quite independent and is viewed as having a more liberal bent than his colleagues although I think he's still pretty much a fiscal conservative.

    I am sorry to say - but his approach is wrong. From Day 1 he is campaigning that the election shouldn't be one sided. So he is indirectly insinuating that Mr Tharman who is so much loved by everyone - cant be impartial when he resigns from politics and becomes our President. But where does this idea of 'partiality' comes from? As President his role is very much restricted. He will no longer be a policy maker - but he will become the face of Singapore. He will be travelling all over the world and meeting other leaders and exchanging his thoughts and ideas and make it easy for our actual policy makers (PM, FM) to do their job. He will also hold the key to the reserve and release reserve as needed by the actual people in power. Imagine if George Goh was the President during the covid crisis and PAP requests to release the reserve to implement their policies - and the guy says no, what would happen? This is very unprecedented - In other countries this has happened and the president eventually resigned (or was pressured to resign). I believe it totally makes sense for both PM and President to be from the 'same party' because they need to work well together. I believe people need to understand that the position of president is more ceremonial. If George goh wants to change Singapore and reduce cost of living, he should join Politics. Why is he complaining when is is 63 years of age. Where was he in his 30s and 40s. He shouldn't try to change Singapore from President's seat because he can't and if he tries to by making strange remarks we will be laughed at by everyone else. I think George Goh will have a higher chance of winning if he could have convinced PAP that he is not an enemy but an ally. He has a lot of experience in business / execution and he could bring that knowledge to good use. If i was Lawrence Wong, would I want a president who will be working against me and maybe going around giving speeches about how bad the government is doing? No way. I would never let him come in, in the first place. This 4g leadership needs some adult supervision -Therman is the right person for the job. Imagine if LW comes up with a policy - therman can challenge it and LW is smart enough to listen because Therman has more experience and has been doing this for a long time, he knows that. Also i want to point out the obvious - Mr. Therman has better competency of English and Language in General. Please just go to youtube and watch any one of his videos. The way he speaks - I want to pay him money to teach me how to speak like him. He is incredible. Such a smart cookie. If I was PAP i would be sad that they are loosing such a smart person from their core leadership team. But the fact that he will still be around as president makes me happy. There will be no contest - It will be Therman all the way. George Goh is trying to win the popular vote by using his ethnicity, chinese language skill and complaining about current situation (high prices, high cost of living etc). But he never says if he gets appointed as President - how is he going to solve any of them? He can't! If he really cares - he should join politics.
