We've stayed at The Intercontinental a few times, The Willard, and The Wharf. To be honest the most we've splurged on food was the breakfast buffet in The Willard. It was expensive, but rather good. Have a vacation trip planned later in October (22 - 29). Last big event I went to was U2 at the Capital One arena.

My triple treat was staying in a nice room at the Willard and having lunch al fresco with a direct view of the White House gate and Washington Memorial and set back just enough from the sidewalk passersby, and having a breakfast there al fresco at a table that made me feel I was their most special guest. To me, that was a bucket list experience.

Our private tour with you, this past April, was definitely the highlight of our trip! Heading back next April to see some of the things we didn’t have time for.

I agree with your tips. When I go to a major city for the first time, I always seek out the best meal I can have, then the best hotel based on the itinerary (close to an event, close to metro station, best chances for perks and upgrades, bucket list hotel, walkability). But when I really want to splurge, yes, those private tours make all the difference, more than the upscaled hotel or meal.

Hi! We typically stay at the Holiday Inn, sorta near the Smithsonian’s, come back, like you said and recharge. We end up walking to Clyde’s for an incredible meal, which isn’t too pricey. John 3:16❤️

I liked Clyde’s too, especially upstairs where it was much quieter and the service was excellent. My review on them is real food for real people.

Having a tour guide is a great way to experience DC for the first time. They guide you and you enjoy the sites with out having to spend half your time looking things up on maps and worrying about getting lost .

We’re staying in the River Inn atm, lovely location with leafy streets and very close to the Foggy Bottom metro for access to the rest of DC.

Willard has a great bar too.
For any of the super expensive restaurants it’s key to book those far far in advance.

Would love to see one on navigation of dispenserys. It's very strange in DC you have to buy art. Maybe some great spots to smoke and of course the munchies!

We stayed at Hyatt Regency, Capitol Hill and it’s a lovely hotel in a nice area only a short walk to the National Mall and was worth paying a little extra.
We also thoroughly enjoyed our Trip Hacks tour with Rob, and I would recommend it to everyone who visits D.C.
We had a couple of nice meals, one with some friends at the Hard Rock Cafe which was great for the atmosphere and for spending time with friends we don’t get to see often enough. We also had a lovely meal at Clyde’s next to the Capitol One Arena
Being a sports fan we bought tickets to watch The Nats and The Commanders. I had to take advantage whilst being over there as I love most sports
We were there 7 days and only scratched the surface of things to see in D.C. so hope to get back over again soon to make some more memories

Any suggestions for hotel and tours for traveling with someone in their late 80’s? A walking tour is probably not doable.

Some companies will do a private driving tour (in a SUV or van depending on group size). These are the hotels I recommend: triphacksdc.com/hotels

What’s a good splurge if you are going with a 7 year old in winter?

    Thanks for the video Rob.
I am planning a long second trip to DC in December, alone, like always. Do you think that a private tour for a single person is reasonable? I looked at THDC website and all the tours are at the afternoon which is less comfortable to me.
    Thank you very much

Private tours are afternoons on weekdays and mornings on the weekend. I have solo travelers on private tours all the time, including just last week!
