- ITS ALL COME DOWN TO THIS! Korra takes on the ENTIRE Red Lotus at once, Jinora and the airbending nation create a cyclone, Bolin and Mako defeat Ming Hua and Ghazan, and SO MUCH MORE! Truly an incredible feat of storytelling, character development, animation, and heart. We were on the edge of our seats the entire time, and while we're worried for what Korra's next steps are (literally), we could not be more excited to start Book 4!

the poison didn't actually make her go into the avatar state, it was slowly killing her. but the avatar state kicks in when the avatar is in danger, and since she was literally dying because of the poison, she couldn't get out of it

@@jdv4623 yun, the false avatar in kyoshi novel was trained by assasins and infamous benders there was a scene where his poison training helped. So i think it wasn't considered. It is just that nobody was intentionally poisoned using a metallic poison.

The final scene with Jinora hits so hard. Nearly 200 years since there was an Air Nation to witness the birth of a new Airbending Master.

Korra's tear at the end always gets me... She wants to be happy for Jinora, but everything just reminds her how much she feels powerless right now. The airnation is back, with a new airbender, but she's not sure she'll be able to be the Avatar ever again. And if the airbenders will travel the world helping everyone... is she even needed anymore? She can't be happy right now because she feels she failed everyone
And I think she also sees Aang in Jinora in some way and it once again reminds her of his legacy.

Here we see a battle where Korra fights to stay out of the Avatar state to save Raava while Raava fights to induce the Avatar state to try and save Korra. Both are willing to die to save the other.

Fun fact: *Korra had 3 times the lethal amount of Mercury is inside her body during this episode,* but even though she was literally fighting while dying, *she still managed to hold her own against Zaheer and she nearly beat him if it wasn't for the poison.*

But I also think that each avatar is stronger than his predecessor.
Kyoshi was stronger than Kuruk, Roku was stronger than Kyoshi, Aang was stronger than Roku and Korra is stronger than Aang and the next avatar will be stronger than Korra. Because each new reincarnation is kind of a level up in power and wisdom

I would like to point out Korra's strength in this episode. Not bending strength or willpower but literal physical strength. She broke 3 of the 4 PLATINUM chains holding her in the cave. Since we know you can't bend platinum because it's too pure that means she physically broke them. She's strong.
She dislodged them from the cave wall. Still very strong but I think earthbending came into play there.

This is THE most powerful Avatar State we have ever seen. Aside from Wan, whom I highly doubt could shatter platinum, every other Avatar had the advantage of being able to call on their past lives. Korra and Raava really pulled out all the stops here. If not for the poison, Zaheer wouldn't have stood a ghost of a chance.
It hit me so hard when Korra shed tears at the end while watching the girl who saved her life twice (vs. Unalaq and Zaheer) become an airbending master
I think it as because tenzin said the new airbenders would take care of it and korra took it as she wasn’t needed anymore because she was crippled and everything

This should be an incredibly joyful occasion for Korra because Jimora's like a little sister to her but she can't. Tearbending every time 😓

Seeing Korra physically and mentally broken at the end of this season made this grown man cry.
Korra would've beat Zaheer by herself if she wasn't poisoned and chained. And I stand by this.
You're not alone. I think it would've been epic for Korra to have an even stronger clutch moment where she REALLY uses the Avatar state and metalbends the poison out of herself. Then just have Zaheer looking all scared and whiny like the little ***** he is as Korra just absolutely bodies him.

This episode is not only the culmination of book 3, but also of Korra's arc so far. Aang didn't want to be the Avatar because he saw himself only as Aang, he thought that the responsibility was too much for him, and throughout the show, he learns too see himself as "Avatar Aang". In book 1, when Korra looked herself in the mirror, she didn't see Korra, she didn't even see Avatar Korra, what she saw was only the Avatar. Since she was three years old, she trained in a compound with no friends except Naga and Katara, with only one goal in mind, placed by herself and almost everyone around her; to be the Avatar. And she wanted to be one so badly that she completely forgot about Korra. She was told she *needs* to save the world, to be the bridge between the spirit and real world, and ever since she came to Republic City, in her eyes, she did nothing but fail. She lost her bending, the cycle, and now, her ability to walk. And there is maybe no scene more telling of this than the end of book 1, when Korra goes to the cliff and thinks of commiting suicide, because in her eyes, what good is she if she can't bend the four elements? What good is Korra if she isn't the Avatar? And in book 2 she also fails and loses the cycle, and starts doubting herself even more, but book 3 is when all of her worst fears come true; the Earth Kingdom is in complete chaos, and she isn't there to fix it. She is in a wheelchair, she's crippled, and then Tenzin comes and says that the Air Nation will take care of everything, basically in her mind telling her: "You aren't needed anymore". That is why she feels broken more than ever, why I love her character and complexities so much, why she makes for such a compelling character, and why her growth in book 4 matters *that* much. And I am really excited for it.
This is something that some people miss. Korra entirely perception on herself was built around her duty as the Avatar, something that slowly fades away during the 4Books when she found herself and started to see herself as also a daughter, a friend, a girlfriend, a person.
I think Korra also faced another problem which is the change of times. As we could see at the beging she was using force without thinking. That was showed quite well where she delt with the bad guys in ep.1 in book 1 and still got arrested by police. What I'm trynig to say is that as a child she most likely was listening about amazing adventures of the previous avatar team and she really wanted to do the same. Unfortunately for her the world has changed and there was more space for dialogue instead of pure force solutions. We could see it for example in book 2 when her dad asked her for getting military help from Republic City while she wanted to fight for her tribe in the first line. That's also the reason why she was so disappointed when she couldn't make anyone fight for her tribe. That's why I think she wasn't prepared for facing the world current problems and that's also the reason why she felt not needed, because for her being the Avatar was not some kind of diplomat, but most powerful person in the world destined to deal with bad guys by force.

Tenzin also goes through this as seeing him as the son of Aang lol. After getting past that, he helps Korra with the same thing at the end of Book 2.

This is such a great analysis! I’m so excited for book 4!
I love love love how you both just *get* it. Not many people watching the show for the first time understand how tragic this is for Korra’s character and they just dwell on how hard Korra was being beat by Zaheer, myself included. To be honest, it took some maturity and a second watch several years later for me to really understand the purpose of the last few episodes but, once you do understand, you begin to appreciate the show a lot more and it’s realistic discussion on loss, trauma and mental health. If we think about ATLA realistically, Aang was a 12 year old boy who woke up after 100 years only to discover that his whole nation had gone extinct and that he had to kill or be killed. He was chased and hunted, captured, and on several occasions he lost he only family he had left. With what he went though in the span of a summer, he should have had tremendous mental and emotion adversities and we’re able to get small glimpses of that in ATLA itself and the flashbacks of adult Aang we see in the show.
With your ending comments, all I have to say is yes.

i think ATLA set an expectation and hyped the Avatar state so much thet the fandom believes that once the Avatar state appears, the villain is going down easily, just like the final battle in ATLA, but not only the avatars are passing on knowledge from one to another, of course it will also happen to groups that wants the avatar gone, they will know the vulnerability of the avatar one way or the other, this is why the villains in TLOK are terrifying because they are smart. It is a good thing Jinora is a genius too.
I like ATLA because this show introduced me to Kyoshi, but i like TLOK more. And that's just my preference. Though Kyoshi is still on top for me.
@@carmcam1 I don’t know which one I prefer because these shows honestly share quite a few similar shortcomings. Aang in season two of ATLA kinda just meditates most of his personal issues away during his chakra training. Similar thing happens with Korra in season 4 when she confronts Zaheer in prison. She needs to confront the memory of the most horrific experience of her life? The thing that has been plaguing her for 3 years? All done in a 20 second sequence of meditating despite how she panics and screams I have no control.
Some people think Azula’s character shift was rushed? What about Kuvira deciding to surrender everything to the people she deemed would run the earth kingdom into the ground because of a quick heart to heart with Korra? I’m pretty sure this is the kind of storytelling that Steven Universe gets mocked for, not mention this is what caps off Korra’s character arc.
Let's not forget that Korra lost all the other Avatars, so her wildin' out in the Avatar State was just her

So many people don't understand the last scene, which is sad, because It is a very powerful scene. Korra's identity is the avatar, her identity is revolving around the fact that she is the avatar. Every villain we have met was threatening her identity ( amon took her bending away, unalaq killed the avatar spirit and zaheer almost ended the avatar cycle) and not only that, they were all saying that she is useless and the world doesn't need her anymore. And here we have tenzin who is a really important figure for her, basically telling that the air nation can do her job and they don't need her. Can you imagine that? Imagine having your indentity threatened by everyone and to make it worse, your mentor is going to replace you. Such a sad scene.
Her allies became her new enemies (they accomplished exactly what her enemies wanted; render her entire existence pointless, at least in her view) and stayed that way for three years, entirely out of a desire to sincerely help her. They really should have been chewed out over that.
I think most people understand the last scene, some just don't accept what they see because so many stories are not willing to have lasting damage to their protagonists. "Oh she is sad? But she is just gonna be fine again next season" is how many view it, and to be fair to them, many times that is exactly what happens. One of the things that makes LoK great is it has the courage to follow through on the trauma its characters experience.

Even more: when Korra sees Jinora shaved she also sees Aang - a symbol of what she was striving for and a symbol of expectations from her. And, in addition to what you mentioned above, this is just devastating for her.
This is a great dissection of that scene. How each villain affected her, and what her own personal struggle was throughout the series: identity.
I always cry when I see that final look in Korra's face and that one tear. They did a FANTASTIC job just making her look so empty, It's the face of someone who's whole world has just come down around them. Like she has been fighting this whole time to try and prove her worth as the avatar, had to watch the spiritual side get ripped from her and now the physical aspect is gone. She's prided herself so much in her fighting abilities and she bases her entire worth as a person on it, and for her to be hurt and tortured so badly that she can't walk is so devastating.
She's so powerful.

We don't talk enough about how Korra fought so hard against entering the avatar state in order to protect the avatar cycle, when it was trying to kick in to literally keep her alive. Also fighting Zaheer while poisoned/slowly dying. And there's people (fanboys) who still have the nerve to say she's weak, like, how much do you enjoy being wrong? 🤡

If you think about it Korra only had one fair fight and it was against UnaVaatu.
-Amon and Tarrlok had the bloodbending, and even Aang couldn't break the grip of it without the avatar state
-Zaheer only fought against Korra when she was chained and with poison in her body
-Kuvira only first fought with Korra because she knew Korra wasn't in the best place mentally and was off training and fight for 3years.

Kind of appropriate, as his obsession with killing her and destroying the avatar is a form of earthly tether. He could have gotten away had he let her go and flew off earlier, but he couldn't let her go. So she literally and figuratively dragged him down.

One thing I have consistently noticed about ATLA and Korra reactions is that when the shows are watched back to back the reception of Korra is more positive. The nostalgia doesn’t have time to set in.

YES, I love the fact that he was sucked by his own concept of freedom (the tornado) to the earth and in order to achieve it he had to hold the avatar, making her his earthly tether in the end and the way this brought him to his moral defeat (she chained him to the ground basicly)

By saying, "Follow in your footsteps," Tenzin (unintentionally) made it sound as if Korra was done making footsteps, like she was done with her duties. That made her feel like she wasn't needed anymore. Poor thing I just want to hug her.
She thought her dad died, so when she looked at him after the battle she thought she died too and that's why she can see her dad.... Imagine the pain she felt as she thought she failed as the avatar, and couldnt save the avatar cycle either... 🥺🥺🥺🥺

I felt so so bad for Korra when I watched the series. From what little we know of the past avatars, she’s quite possibly been through the most. And it was all back to back. The amount of strength it took her to even get this far is nothing less than remarkable.
The fact that she doesn’t come out of a completely broken person speaks to the strength of her character

I can’t watch this episode without crying. The happiness of Jinora and her tattoos while also feeling the weight of Korras trauma. It kills me
This was a finale worthy of the amazing season. It had pretty much everything. From Bolin and Ghazan finally having an even match, Ming Hua's fatal weakness, a sky battle for the ages, the first real air nation action in almost 200 year and Jinora getting her tattoos. And through all that, it's still made clear that Korra's story is far from over, which leads to my favorite arc of hers in the next season. Montana's really gonna have a field day with Korra in season 4
Especially with all the ATLA finale parallels.
One on one, Ghazan would’ve beat Bolin. Ghazan is more experienced and has the mindset of a ruthless criminal. Bolin is innocent in comparison

So, this is apparently the 100th episode of the Avatar franchise! And what a worthy episode it is for that title.
To celebrate that milestone they wrote one of the two craziest final battles in the entire franchise (the other being the grand finale of ATLA, which this battle mirrors in many ways)
It's actually not But it is the 100th episode of the main storylines
What I noticed from these 3 seasons is that Jinora sort of became the Aang to help Korra. Aang saved Korra in season 1; and when Korra lost her connection, in a way Aang’s spirit sort of reincarnated into Jinora and from then on we see Jinora constantly saving Korra. Obviously she isn’t literally a reincarnation but in a way Aang’s role in Korra’s life became Jinoras. She even looks like Aang when bald and got the tattoos at a super young age similar to Aang.
She looks just like Aang when shes shaved and tatted. Like almost exactly lol
Just comparing Korra's eyes when she's going to Republic City for the first time and her eyes at the end of season 3 shows that she has lost the light and hope

That tear at the end had more meaning than you probably think. It was Korra’s final breaking point. For 3 seasons straight you have seen Korra being broken down over and over again, with people repeating that there isn’t a place for her in the world anymore, over and over again.
Imagine being isolated for 16 years, hearing about the legendary Avatar Aang, who heroically defeated the fire lord and brought balance to the world. Korra only wanted to do the same, but she struggled over and over again in a time where she thought she wasn’t needed. That moment right there was when she finally was done. Tenzin basically said “We will bring balance to the world for how ever long you need, you are not needed, we can handle things” which was her final straw.
Also I love the Bolin and Ghazan battle, for this whole season they were almost buddies, having small talk and stuff. As specially when Ghazan says “let’s see what you got!” imagine if they were a power duo (rip Ghazan) then they would literally be unstoppable. 2 lava benders fighting together, quite a shame though.
Anyways, on to season 4 and all hail the great uniter!
It's depressing how her own allies, friends and mentors accomplished what her enemies wanted, becoming her new enemies in the process; to render her useless and obsolete (or at least make her assume this). They really, REALLY should have thought their words a lot better. Especially with all the letters they sent her showing the stuff they were up to in the intervening three years, further confirming that her entire existence is pointless and she doesn't deserve to live. If I was in her position, I would seriously consider them enemies for metaphorically kicking her while she was down.
This really needs to be explored more-how would they react when they realize they've been basically acting as her enemies and causing her even more pain and suffering for THREE YEARS, entirely out of goodwill?

Kenny is thinking too hard about the guy that administered the poison. Metal bending is reasonably common for an earth bender to learn. And we already saw that Aiwei, a metal bender, was part of the red lotus, fair to say that the red lotus has more metal benders in their ranks. Not too much to think about, metal bending isn’t necessarily reserved for the elite of the elite anymore.

It was never an “elite of the elite” thing. It was just that it was never before seen until Toph first did it. In Korra, it’s pretty standard for Earthbender to mental bend. All of Zaofu Earthbending citizens can metalbend. All of the police force Earthbender as can metalbend. It just needed to be created first so others could learn it.
I remember the panic back in the day when the last scenes was Korra crying in a wheelchair. Because everyone where so afraid that the show could get canceled since TLOK was being aired only in nick site and that would be the end.
That AND the 3 month WAIT for the next season too. I was so scared that it was cancelled and/or wouldn't be aired. It was crazy.
That would've been a horrible dark way to end the show

Fun fact: ALL the main Red Lotus members had ironic ends. Tarlock got destroyed by his own spiritbending technique, P'Li blew her head up with her combustionbending, Ming-Hua was electrocuted by her own arms, Ghazan committed suicide with his lavabending, and you went over Zaheer's end.
Yep, that's called poetic justice. Some other youtuber made a video about it, strongly reccomend it, because there is multiple examples of that through out the season 3. For example same event that gave Zaheer power, empowered other airbenders, who got it just like him, and whome he sought to imprison)
Actually, I think the same goes for all the other villains as well. Amon died because of an explosion caused by an equalist glove, and Unalaq died because of a spiritual explosion kind of thing (also, he was almost defeated by the same spiritbending technique he taught to Korra). And as for the villain of the season four, let's say she almost got defeated by the thing she used to attack people (I am being vague in order to not give spoilers to anyone who hasn't seen the season four, but those who did will know what I am talking about).

He was always cool, like when he was lightningbending at Amon in Book 1 but that was just his character. He was cool. Nothing more. I'm glad that changed.

This was the first Wrath Avatar State of Legend of Korra, can we just appreciate something we haven't seen since The Last Airbender.
You have to admit this is a flawless plan by the Red Lotus. The poison is also a backup plan if they couldn’t kill her in time. If it wasn’t for Kai following them and knowing their location Korra would be dead and the Avatar cycle could have been over. So thanks Kai for saving the Avatar!
Kai had so much development in one season and he didn’t even have that much screen time

Fun fact: Korra's battle with Zaheer recalls several elements from the battle at Wulong Forest, such as the fact that both conflicts occurred in the Earth Kingdom in a field of rock columns, portions of which were used in offensive maneuvers. Additionally, both combatants in each fight were capable of flying by using airbending, like Aang and Zaheer, or firebending, like Ozai and Korra.

I still freak out a little every time Korra bends those platinum chains. That alone is a great example of how powerful the Avatar can be.

Ghazan would have been a great teacher for Bolin as well...Ghazan was straight up smoking him in all their battles. I think that is part of the strength of this season, it is extremely bittersweet as many of the characters could be allied if circumstances and positions were different. The same is the case with Zaheer and Korra.

@@elifkabak9261 actually it was first implied in atla, when the avatar is in the avatar state, they have access to all of the power of their past lives, remember when we saw roku lavabend but it was actually aang although aang isnt a lavabender. yeah so the avatar state helps the avatar access abilities of their past lives, so korra is that powerful.
I just realized after watching this for the 4th time the parallel between season 1 when bolin first meets korra and says “I don’t know how my earth bending would translate to your water bending” and when bolin lava bent for the first time in this episode he uses a kind of water bending technique when fighting ghazan.

The way the final battle was a direct callback to Sozin’s Comet except the airbender is the villain and the hero is using mostly firebending...and it was definitely a battle to the death on BOTH sides. It’s honestly genius.
It's a well known fact that when villains have to use poison on the heroes, it's because they know that if they don't, *they'll get clapped in seconds.*

Mako’s character development as a good cop shows with his restraint with his lightning bending. He chooses not to use it since it’s more lethal than his fire. And uses it as a last resort, in this case he probably would have died if he didn’t.
That, or he was saving it for a moment like this as a trump card.

It's incredible how the Red Lotus would be remembered for ages, for killing and consequently ending the monarchy in the Earth continent and at the same time the leader of it, Zaheer is so talented and powerful as Guru Laghima
Antagonists such as Jet,Amon,Tarloq get forgotten in time but those like Ozai,Azula,Unaloq,The Red Lotus anyone who makes a world/societal change.
Amon could be remembered because of the take over of Republic City but in comparison to the removal of the rings of Ba Sing Se Amon does nothing.
I love how korra went full broly/hulk on zaheer, and the chain at the end was a very "puny god" kind of moment.

My top guaranteed tearbending scene (after Leaves From the Vine) is the final scene in this episode. The music, the juxtaposition of joy and sorrow.... It's absolutely stunning and cements LOK as a worthy follow-up to ATLA.

Literally every time I see the scene of Jinora getting her tattoos, I tear up. I’ve seen it many times, but still, without fail. It’s the perfect storm for me, incredible VO performance by JK, stunning animation, gorgeous music... just everything blends together in just the right way to elicit a tear from me.
I always had the feeling that this was the first time we saw korra lose control over the avatar state
Tenzin meant the best by offering the air nation to protect the world in Korra’s place, but he literally told her that the world does not need her anymore because they’ll do her job. He confirmed her fear and what every villain so far has said.
I also love that we’ve already seen the main antagonist and that they had multiple shots in screen throughout season 3!

All I can say about Book 4 is the "This is not a kids show" counter will definitely increase a bit, but not as much as Book 3. There's a reason Nickelodeon didn't air Book 4 on TV and instead put it up on their website.

Il serait peut-être d'arrêter de "protéger" les enfants de tous les sujets. Ces dessins animés sont des perles rares et il y en trop peu pour que les chaînes décident de les saboter. En tout, TLOK est vraiment le meilleur que j'ai pu voir. Je suis content que les réalisateurs aient pu continuer à développer leur univers, malgré tout, avec les comics.
The last scene makes me tearbend every time. The music, Tenzin's speech, Jinora looking so much like her grandfather, Korra's trauma... And as people say, Jinora's ceremony is the first one with an entire Air nation witnessing in 200 years, which is beautiful. But it also means that Tenzin was the only airbender to become a master and have his ceremony alone, with only his father as another Airbender, there was no Air nation for him, which is kind of really sad.
This is the mirror opposite to the finale of ATLA in many ways. Aside from the aerial battle where the villain is the bald airbender and the Avatar is using rocket propulsion to keep up, take a look at what happens inside the mountain.

It’s amazing that Korra was there because it was like Aang was there watching his granddaughter become one of the first airbending masters in a long time. Aang always wanted to rebuild the air nation and his dream is now true with Jenora and Tenzin.
The portrayal of PTSD and how people cope with failure/loss is so perfect I cried really hard at some points. People that like psychology👀 and stuff would appreciate that part of the season. The character's paths make sense for their personality this show just handles characters in general I'm excited for you to see it
Eh, the writers could have done better with the final step of Korra overcoming her ptsd than a 20 second sequence where she meditates with Zaheer. Exposure therapy is a real thing, but I don’t think most ptsd victims bounce back as nearly as fast as Korra did in that scene.

@@caleb282 Imagine if Korra had to watch the memory of her crippling multiple times until she’s desensitized to it while Zaheer walks her through it. Saying things like focus. You were strong enough to get through it then, I believe you can do it again now. You just gotta remember where that strength came from.That would have been way more believable to me. The way that scene played out kinda reminds me of how quickly Aang overcame his personal issues while unlocking his chakras.
@@caleb282 Still, as disappointing as that was, it’s nowhere near as bad as how Steven Universe handled PTSD. That show didn’t even have the decency to show Steven go through any recovery process. It just skips ahead a few months after his breakdown where he seems to have gotten better.

The end of this episode always has mein shambles. Korra has always been a favourite of mine and I've suffered with depression for years and seeing that look on her face... Seeing her this broken and seeing myself in it just breaks me everytime... The tired eyes, motionless face, barely speaking, barely moving, only the tiniest smile for the kids, the single tear, the way everyone talks to her takes care of her, especially asami caring for her helping her out, being gentle and still she can't move or say anything,.. It just hits the mark every single time. Incredible portrayal of mental illness and trauma in just those few final scenes. Also makes this beautiful ceremony hit even harder

And when they do return, they have PTSD and other psychological difficulties they bring home in peace time.
And when nations are in turmoil, often they pull back to their military might to protect their borders.
Exploiting powers wherever it may be.
Social Justice will be difficult to achieve in an incoherent society.
Military PTSD is an issue alot of returning American's deal with. Add to the Civilian PTSD of POC's.
Aspects this "not a kid's show" has not handled yet.
