Farce at Fontwell! Horse finishes nearly last, but still wins race 🧐

  • Dharma Rain was declared the winner of the final race at Fontwell after the first six horses home were all disqualified for failing to jump the third-last hurdle.
    Nine horses went to post in the “From The Horse’s Mouth Podcast” Mares’ Handicap Hurdle and while Just Henny came home first, the race was awarded to Dharma Rain, who was seventh of eight finishers, but the only runner to complete the course.
    Winning jockey Jack Tudor felt the situation had been “unclear” during the race, with the racecourse’s groundstaff appearing to be in the process of dolling off the third flight from home on the final circuit due to a stricken horse.
    The first seven riders seemed to think the markers were in position and duly veered around the hurdle, although Tudor, who was at the back of the field, was not sure and jumped the obstacle, resulting in victory for Clare Hobson’s runner.
    “It was made very unclear, it wasn’t done brilliantly at all. It looked as if the markers were in the correct position, it was a 50-50 call, but I went with my gut instinct,” Tudor told Sky Sports Racing.
    “I jumped it, but it was very unclear. The others missed it, but I could see that the markers were behind the hurdle, so I went with my gut instinct and jumped it - but it was very unclear.”
    Page Fuller, who was in the leading group on her mount Queen Among Kings, added: “The horse broke down at the hurdle, I was further back in the field and from where I was, the markers looked like they were in the hurdle.
    “But once we’d gone round the hurdle, you could see they were past the hurdle. There was a flag being waved and the markers looked as if they were in the hurdle, but until you got around the hurdle, you couldn’t see they (markers) were behind.”
    The stewards inquired into the race, interviewing Tudor along with fellow jockeys Jerry McGrath, Brendan Powell, Lucy Gardner, Harry Reed, Tabitha Worsley, Niall Houlihan and Fuller, plus the clerk of the course, the racecourse head groundsman and an additional member of the groundstaff.
    Having heard all the evidence and viewed recordings of the incident, the stewards revised the placings to make Dharma Rain the winner and only finisher, with all other runners, barring Bluebell Sally who was pulled up, disqualified for taking the wrong course.
    However, no penalties were imposed on any riders as the stewards took into account “the poor visibility, and the illusion that the chevrons had been placed in the hurdle - which was caused by the chevrons being carried across the course behind the hurdle, which gave riders’ cause for concern for the safety of all involved”.
    A report will be forwarded to the head office of the British Horseracing Authority.

    The men with the arrows were behind the hurdle in the middle of the course. Then, too late, they started shuffling off to the side. Eight of nine jockeys saw that as “go around the hurdle” and one jockey, in last place with nothing to lose, thought what the hell, i’ll just go for it. The correct thing to do in this situation would be to give him 1st place, as they did, and give the rest of them 2nd..3rd..4th..etc...etc...They made a split second decision under unusual circumstances, and unluckily got it wrong. Nobody died. Change the winner, YES.... Disqualify the others, NO.......But as happens far too many times, COMMON SENSE just seems to bypass sports officials.

    There was a downed and stricken horse being treated by vets on the other side of the hurdle and if the whole field had jumped it and put the horse and vets in danger and then claimed they were merely following the rules, no doubt the stewards and everyone else would have said that they should have used common sense and sod the rules, rather than put the horse and vets in danger and the jockeys would probably have been given a ban too.
    The fact that they did 'break the rules' here by not jumping the hurdle yet were not given a ban, tells you that even the stewards knew it was a farce, considering course staff had the time it took for the runners to complete a whole lap on the track to get the warning markers in place to let the jockeys know what they were meant to do.

    • @Catjuggler
      @Catjuggler 3 роки тому

      Most bookies now on Stewards enquiries pay out on both if it was a UK race, but this was a bit of a different scenario. Different bookies have different rules and in circumstances like this some could use it too their advantage. They could do it as a void race so even the official winner won't count and all you get is a refund. Some may pay out only on the official winner and some may pay out on both as if it was a dead heat so your winnings may be halved. When you walk in any betting shop in UK there is their rules written on its wall at its entrance and it legally gives them the right to pay out how they please because they have covered themselves in every scenario you could possibly think of when it comes to paying out on bets, especially in these circumstances due to how messy things could potentially get.

      @Catjuggler 3 роки тому

      There was a grand national that was void in the early 90s and that's arguably the biggest jump race in the in UK, if not the world. Also in past people have gone on the course while during a race and sabotaged it. Greyhound races are voided more frequently, every so often you get a dog running across the green instead of on the track. In the 60s at my local track which is now closed, someone once threw a cat on the track because the race that was meant to be fixed was gonna loose. I might not bet anywhere near that many horses a day or bet that much but I have been following the sport longer and same for betting in general.

      You'd probably be disqualified either way for following an incorrect course, and add to that a ban if you jump a hurdle you're told not to and put an injured horse & the stewards at risk by doing so.

    Ok I'll admit I don't watch this type of horse racing and certainly don't know the rules, but it seems crazy to me that jockey could ever not know where he is going on a track, it's his job. So the fact that it seems like almost every single one messed up by going around the hurdle is mind boggling. Hell I cnn't think of any race where they put a hurdle but give you the option to not do it.Why would anyone ever not avoid it if possible? would be way faster. But yeah this whole thing is very weird.

    Some stupid comments on here from ignorant people. The problem started when Bluebell Sally was pulled up owing to an injury. On the following lap owing to the horse still unable to leave the track it was decided wrongly to allow the jockeys to jump the hurdle but then to divert safely around the injured horse. As the chequered boards were after the hurdle and not in front of it that would normally mean you jump the hurdle. However the boards were initially held across the track instead of being placed a safe distance around the horse which was off camera. On approach to the hurdle the boards were suddenly removed after the jockeys had committed to bypass it as they obviously saw the loose horse still on the course.
    The problem with most of these racecourse attendants on any course is that they are mostly Indian casual workers and suffer with the understanding of English. It was obviously a late decision that was misunderstood by the course attendants.

    Shambles from Fontwell right enough - it was like a chuckle brothers gig.

    What a complete and utter organisational shambles by an industry that survives on, amongst other things, the betting public and the perhaps mistaken belief that it is run by professionals! Did the 'arrow carriers' not see the wall of horses approaching?! It was only because Dharma Rain was so far back he had time to realign his approach when he saw the guys retreating (watch the bottom of the screen on the vid). Amateur hour indeed.
