You're spot on. The song (Originally a Motorhead song) was written specifically about the Battle of the Somme from WWI, but Sabaton is taking that and expanding the context to all soldiers. The idea of a bunch of soliders walking in solidarity is very powerful.

My great great Uncle Ernie was a gunner in the 18X Trench Mortar Battery, he hailed from Ely, Cambridgeshire England, sadly he never returned to his native soil, her perished as a prisoner of war in July 1918, and is buried in Brandenburg Germany. He left behind a fiancée, his mother , 3 brothers and a sister. I don't even have a picture of him, but his fiancée was a school teacher who taught my grandpa and said he looked like his uncle. ❤
He fought in those trenches, the mud, and was on the front lines
From this sad video I assume it is based on the soldiers brave sacrifices of WWI 1914 to 1918. So many lives lost, I learned of my Uncle Ernie through his niece , my great aunt Gertie she was born in 1910 and passed at 105 in 2016.
Seems like a long time ago until one talks to the older generation who lost a loved one. ❤

This song is a cover of Motorheads song from 1991.
Edit. The video does not explain it well, but there was a system called "pals battalions" in the earlier parts of the first world war. Basically you and your friends could join up with other people from your town and county. (I guess you have Provinces instead of counties in your country?) As you can imagine, if one of those battalions took a lot of losses, an entire town could lose most of their young men. They stopped that system afterwards so losses would be spread out over the country rather than one town, city or county.

Battle of the Somme was mud, the heavy cannons got stuck in that mud, the calvary as well, basically those poor men were sent to their deaths, the Battle of the Somme was one of the most devastating losses of WWI. The British army was ill prepared. 😢

It did what it was supposed to do though and relieved pressure on the French at Verdun. The poor training of British artillery crews in the new tactics hurt them terribly.

The Somme was a sea of mud because it had rained the heaviest rain for the last 30 years. Then add in artillery churning up the ground and creating pools that gathered more of the water, and you get one of the worst kinds of battlefields to fight across. Slowing your advance and leaving little to no cover.

The mistake was British high command. Yes, they shelled the German line for 7 days and nights, and on the 8th day they thought there wouldn't be any resistance, but the germans actually moved their lines back, and when the first wave, which comprised the Manchester regiment and others, was cut to pieces by the german artillery in the first hour, so 20,000 were killed, wounded, or missing, but the British kept throwing bodies at the German line.

You are so right about the community! And good luck with your personal issues.
[I hope you'll forgive a pasted comment, it took me a while to write the first time.] I saw Sabaton perform this live in Leeds on the first night of the current tour, and it was so emotional. So let's raise a few glasses: to Birmingham, birthplace of metal; to Lemmy (RIP); to Sabaton; and to those who sacrificed so much. My wife's grandfather was one of those who lied about his age - he was only _14_ when he went to the Front! He got out alive, thanks to some amazing luck: he was wounded and taken to a field hospital, and his own father was there at the same time. He swore a lot when he saw his son, then wrote to his wife back home explaining the situation. She in turn sent evidence of their boy's age to the War Office and they pulled him out. After he came home he never spoke to anyone in the family about his experiences. Greetings from South Yorkshire - Lest We Forget.

The thing about war that a lot of people don't realize is that there are no winners in war. Yes, a nation as a whole may be victorious, however, for those who fought on the battlefield, there will never be any semblance of victory. For the losers die and the "winners" come back mentally and physically scared for life.

Sabaton has a history channel. They give you the story and background information on all the songs they have written. They make sure to learn all that that they can about the events and people they write and sing about. They care very much about honoring the events/people. They take no side or political position. They just tell the stories so that we never forget those who have given their lives for their countries through time.

I first heard 1916 by Motörhead a few weeks before this release on a German rock radio and I was impressed. Never thought Motörhead wrote such a great song back in 1991.
And now Sabaton delivered this absolutely masterpiece as a trubite to Lemmy and Motörhead and to all soldiers of different ages.
Heard this song more than 30 times now and it hits every time. The brilliant way of telling stories about what happened in the past and teaching history makes them my favourite band for years.
They did more than just a tribute to Motörhead but a tribute to all fallen soldiers in history.
All the different soldiers from different ages refer to specific Sabaton songs. The Lady coming out of the dark ally is one of the Night Witches. The convertible car refers to the car where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was shot in Sarajevo which caused WWI. And at the end of the song was "The Old Pub" the B17 bomber from the song No bullets fly... just to name some.
    >> Did you know that Sabaton received the "Enlightener of the Year Award 2022"? Sabaton is the "FIRST EVER ROCK BAND to receive this prestigious accolade!!"
I encourage you to check out more Sabaton songs and their channel called Sabaton History on UA-cam.

I said it to other reactors, Lemmy was a genius writing this piece. When you listen to the original song, it sounds like funeral march. And that is exactly what this battle was, a march to their own funeral for these young kids/men that wanted to be "war heroes", like their grandfathers in napoleonic times. But WW1 was the first technical advanced war, with machine guns and modern artillery. Tactics thou were still suck in napoleonic times. Atack the enemy line.... against machine guns......

I just saw Sabaton live in Finland, two days ago on Friday the 19th, for (I think) the last couple concerts of their tour. They played this song. The entire audience was moved, singing along, and during this song I cried in the stands. First time I ever saw them live, unforgettable, and the connection between them and fans was SO strong.
I had to get this cover's official Sabaton merch t-shirt. It's my first Sabaton shirt, and a nod to both them AND Lemmy Kilmister, and a tribute to all those forgotten, lost lives, lost soldiers - "with a thirst for the Hun, we were food for the gun". War is madness, no matter when, where and how. Really appreciate your reaction, and you are spot on correct about the emotions, and the spirit of Lemmy, and the spirit of Motörhead - with also that of Sabaton in there. Thank you for reacting and sharing!

As you realised, this is a cover of a Motorhead song, thus the references to them in the video. I would urge you to seek that version out. It is more understated than this cover, and I personally prefer it, although the Sabaton version is excellent. There is no official video for the original but there are fan-made ones on UA-cam, or just lyric videos if you prefer. The two surviving members of Motorhead have a cameo in the video (the two guys standing in the doorway and later marching either side of the guy carrying Lemmy's photo - their old tour manager I believe). That was a brilliant touch by Sabaton to include them.

There’s a really great movie about the First World War called 1917; it looks like the entire movie was shot in one take (it wasn’t, but they did do as many very long takes as possible) and it really immerses you into the lives of the two soldiers it follows. It’s just about a perfect movie, imo, and really inventive in its storytelling. It’s one of my favorites! I love getting to see all these new bands and songs and learn about them with you! The impact also of all diff kinds of people marching says to me that your friend/relative/stranger be them a metal head or a punk rocker, or a mailman etc..war binds us all in unity and these differences no longer matter when you wear the same uniform. Flesh is no armor against machine guns. No matter where you are from, your country has had a war. This is a sobering reminder today of Ukraine, and that there are large powers in this world that could turn their attention to any of our countries tomorrow and the next songs could be about us. When will we learn….never 😢 the other important thing that hits me is these boys lied about their age so they could VOLUNTEER!! Not be drafted, but at 14/15 say they were older to go fight when many had no idea what war really was. They just knew their country was being threatened and they went. I don’t know any 15 yo kids that prob even know what ww1 was about or when it happened, never mind put their phones down to go fight. It’s up to us all to teach them!! Freedom is not a lifetime guarantee!! Some countries aren’t even free today. Remember the debts that we owe others that came before us will need to be paid forward someday. I only pray not in my lifetime. Love and prayers to all who have served. ❤

Not everyone speaks English as a first language, nor should they be expected to do so. Subscribed. I agree that sabaton has a very unique ability to make us all want to educate ourselves on war history from everywhere, no matter where we are from. I flunked history twice in college and then finally passed with a d. So the fact that after I watch a sabaton video I immediately start researching (on the internet/buying books/watching movies) those events on my own is a testament to them. And proves that music can move people to do all kinds of things. I have learned more about history in the last two years than I did in all 22 years of school. 🤘🤘

Also in credits she is noted as Ivy Valentine from ATS (Auxiliary territorial service - women’s british army branch in WW2), so definitely not one of russian NW. In roughly 10 minutes, 152 men died. Every 10 minutes of the battle. The Battle lasted 142 days, that is roughly 4 months. 31.5 per foot. 103.5 per meter. 7.5 inches for every soldier that died, roughly. War is a travesty, it is utterly inhuman horror in the totality of its violence. The Somme was just one battle in this war. There are several examples of major battles during WW1 that compare to the level of death and destruction, though none were quite as bad. This battle is in fact not the deadliest one, was not in this war. That macabre award goes to Stalingrad of WW2 fame. An entire travesty on its own whose death-count rivals most actual wars fought in history. History is extremely important to remember, those who lived it; and died in it do not have the luxury to live on, nor should we have the luxury to forget. I strongly recommend that you find a point in history and study it. We as a species have a responsibility to remember and if the internet ever dies, it will be a lot harder to do so. Thank you for your heartfelt reaction. I apologize as an American, I use the Imperial system, so to truly understand the depth you may have to use the internet to change it over to Metric.

    numbered 1 000 000 men.
Khudadad Khan, who came from the Punjab, was the first Indian to receive the Victoria Cross
in October 1914 and several others followed.

In the British Indian Army virtually all the troops wore turbans

Lemmy Kilmister was an amazing singer and songwriter. He also is an author of lyrics of one of Ozzy Osbourne’s most famous song “Mama, I’m coming home”, also released in 1991. :-)
