ISLE OF CAPRI (1934) by Al Bowlly and Monia Liter

- This is Al Bowlly singing and playing guitar with piano accompaniment by Monia Liter. I like Al Bowlly singing with this spare accompaniment, as there is more focus on his voice than with the various bands he played with. Many of the 78's he played on did not mention his name on the label and he often only sang half way into the tune. The version featuring Bowlly that he is best known for is that by Ray Noble and his Orchestra
I first heard Bowlly referenced in Richard Thompson's terrific song, "Al Bowlly's in Heaven". Albert Allick "Al" Bowlly (7 January 1898 -- 17 April 1941) was a popular Jazz guitarist, singer, and crooner in the UK and later in the US during the 1930s, making more than 1,000 recordings between 1927 and 1941. Bowlly showcased a diverse range of material unsurpassed by any contemporary other than perhaps Bing Crosby. He was also a truly international recording artist. He was killed by the explosion of a parachute mine outside his flat in Jermyn Street, London during the Blitz.
It was Al's technique, sincerity, diction and his personality that distinguish him from many other singers of the 30s era. As well as singing, Bowlly played both the guitar and the ukulele, with Joyce Stone, widow of Lew Stone saying "You only had to play anything once to Al and he'd got it." Bowlly remains one of the most highly regarded singers of his era because of his extraordinary range, his command of pitch and rhythm, and, above all, the sincerity with which he could deliver a lyric. Ray Noble is often quoted as saying that Al often stepped away from the microphone with tears in his eyes; "never mind him making you cry, he could make himself cry!"
The music for 'Isle of Capri' was written by Wilhelm Grosz (aka Hugh Williams), and the lyrics were by Jimmy Kennedy. The song was published in 1934.
Much of the above was summarised from Wikipedia.
I have done a slideshow for this song and comments are invited,
my great-grandmother's jewlery box from the 30s was handed down to me a couple years ago by my grandma. this song is in the music box within the mechanisms of the wooden frame. she said that when she was young, it would play automatically upon opening the lid, but now, i have to twist a little key on the underside of the box for it to play. it's quite comforting to know that 90 years ago, a lady who i never got to meet, heard the same melody i did, and that she looked in the same little mirror in the lid's interior, as i do now whenever i put my earrings in. thank you nana
Such great memories to share cherish it to the fullest ☺️
I have it too
I recently inherited a music box with the same tune from my aunt, the family matriarch. I hadn't yet learnt who had it before her. Perhaps her mother (my grandmother) or perhaps she bought it overseas.
The music mechanism reads "Premilex Switzerland". The case has brown, black, and tan wood floral and scroll inlays. Inside are two satin-cushioned compartments surrounding a dancing figurine. The lid has a mirror inside.
My grandad Philip born 1926 said this was his favourite song. RIP grandad 1926- 2016. Love you forever xxxx
I learned to play this song on the piano when I took lessons as a child. 😊
The brilliant Monia Liter on piano - Al on guitar and singing - that is all that is required
This shows Al at his best. He didn't need a full orchestra to back him. He is accompanied by the superb pianist Monia Liter. Superb!
Yes, mark of a great artist
Another classic performance by Al Bowlly,of a wonderful song of that era long gone but not forgotten!...Thank you for posting this fantastic, nostalgic and timeless song, and lovely upload...
Another Al and Monia UA-cam treat. Their recordings stand the test of time so much better than many from that era.
My dads favorite song he sang * love you dad forever thank you for giving me my first guitar 🎸 Floyd Martinez Jr. 1920 - 1999
Mine too. He gave me a Ukulele and sent me for music lessons. I ended up being a musician. :)
It was also my Dad's favourite song.
He played the tune on his mouth organ, sang it sometimes, but most often whistled the tune.
When he expired at K E M hospital ICU he whistled the tune before he left forever !
A Nurse on duty, requested the family to ask him to stop whistling, as there were other patients !
I guess he was satisfied with life !
My dad let me play his drums, I can’t thank him enough (he’s still alive).
This song takes me back, to when my father was still alive. Gosh, I miss him 😔
lovely
my mom requested this song which she remembered from her teen years

Thank you for sharing this beautiful song by a talented great artist. My mother loved this song.
Thank you for posting, you have made a sad old man very happy. He had perfect diction and a melodious voice.
This is lovely! I feel like you could dance the tango to it.
Yes, pretty sure this is Al Bowlly on his guitar. Super track, thanks for posting. Bowlly at the top of his game!
It is Bowlly on guitar. He was great, and I love this stripped down instrumentation, probably a bit more than his orchestra stuff.
So Al Bowlly DID sing something other than Midnight, the Stars and You! 🙂
Isle of Capri is a lovely song, which in an orchestral arrangement was used in numerous TV shows.
我很小的时候一直听到这首歌的音乐的,后来加入合唱队,发现我们要演唱的一个曲目居然是它。太惊喜了。
I was on the Isle of Capri 1981. Beautiful memories. Wish I could live here. The blue grotto is amazing.
I also was on the Isle of Capri 1981 - September ! Very beautiful ❤️ memories ! My dream is to see Capri again !

My singing teacher taught us this 18 years ago , I still remember this song
The Austrian composer, Wilhelm Grosz, appears as the pianist accompanying Greta Keller on her recording of this song (from the British collection, and also on YT). He died in 1939.
this is beautiful, thank you. just discovered this singer, my parents era
Thank you for sharing this beautiful post ❤️
I had never heard of Al Bowly and Monia Liter until I found this but they definitely do it right. I prefer this to the fast ones of later years.

I enjoyed your video!
Al Bowly ... YEAH !! Peace / LOVE
❤Lovely
Bowlly was a king of vocalists. The very slow tempo of this "Capri" might not be to everybody's taste, but a fine recording anyway.
I agree--- I sped up the playback speed slightly & it was perfect.
I was in Capri awhile back .... wish I knew what this song was then ! Haha ! 😅
❤❤❤

That happens to me too Robert, usually when I've previously liked something. So I suspect you've liked it before. All the best.
This should be used in next fallout series
It will match its unique atmosphere
Omg that write up tho [welling up]
hi!! i'm indonesian I see this 2021
Just read the biography of W. Somerset Maugham and it relates how the Isle of Capri was the "Gay" place to be before the first world war, then of course it became the high society in place to be in the twenties.
This reminds me of my father playing the guitar and singing "Isles of Capri with my mother on a May evening by moonlight.
As I look back I thank GOD I am blessed with a very beautiful childhood filled with songs and laughter.
Thanks.

is that Al playing slide guitar? fascinating. this has prompted me to send for his autobiography and double cd of his work. Does anyone know of any article or source of information about his guitar technique. He seems to play a variety of instruments - a selmer or macaferri, a four string guitar, something that could a Gibson L series..... do fill me in - I'm on facebook.
That's Al on guitar but I do not know the make or model. Cheers.
Alan Whittle
Yeah he could play guitar and piano. He was a great singer and player. A real musical genius! Tragic death. A bomb hit his lodgings and the door hit him and he went to the world we cannot see. He joined Glenn Miller.

1 dislike....Someone has no taste.
now 14
Do not be judgemental, people are free to dislike, do not become one of them by criticizing them. Music has many varieties, that is why it is good that people can choose, what they like.
Sir in those days there weren't many songs nor many playback singers.
People who loved music, had very little choice. This was my Dad's song!
Beautiful song but every rendition I have heard in other languages are always more upbeat.
🌳 walnut
This song it is from Grace Fields?
't Was on the Isle of Capri that I found her
Beneath the shade of an old walnut tree
Oh, I can still see the flowers blooming round her
Where we met on the Isle of Capri
She was as sweet as a rose at the dawning
But somehow fate hadn't meant her for me
And though I sailed with the tide in the morning
Still my heart's on the Isle of Capri
Summertime was nearly over
Blue Italian sky above
I said "Lady, I'm a rover,
Can you spare a sweet word of love?"
She whispered softly "It's best not to linger"
And then as I kissed her hand I could see
She wore a lovely meatball on her finger
't Was goodbye at the Villa Capri
Summertime was nearly over
Blue Italian sky above
I said "Lady, I'm a rover,
Can you spare a fine word of love?"
She whispered softly "It's best not to linger"
And then as I kissed her hand I could see
She wore a plain golden ring on her finger
't Was goodbye on the Isle of Capri (3x)
Спасибо вам за текст. Благодаря вам я написал это танго по русски. Можно петь.

I believe that a version of this tune was played on the opening of the film "Escape To Athena"? (I daresay that the British armed forces had changed the words to this song also).
Something about "She wore a Swastika Ring on Her Finger", was just one of the sentences changed (?)
