- Twas on the Isle of Capri that I found her
Beneath the shade of an old walnut tree
Oh, I can still see the flow'rs bloomin' round her
Where we met on the Isle of Capri
She was as sweet as a rose at the dawning
But somehow fate hadn't meant her for me
And though I sailed with the tide in the morning
Still my heart's on the Isle of Capri
Summertime was nearly over
Blue Italian sky above
I said "Lady, I'm a rover,
Can you spare a sweet word o'love?"
She whispered softly "It's best not to linger"
And then as I kissed her hand I could see
She wore a plain golden ring on her finger
'twas goodbye at the Villa Capri
I love how these old songs weren't afraid of long instrumental prologues!
They took their time. No hurry, no worry.
It's great isn't it? Builds the anticipation. Also longer songs =more time for dancing.
Dispite 78s at the time only being able to record up to 3:30 for timing. It really shows how recording equipment has come
As an 8 yr old I listened to lots of old song and dance records from this era on my great uncle's old gramophone. Loved dancing to it. And 50 yrs on I still love it.
His voice is fantastic and the orchestration on these records is brilliant. Timeless.
This bloke is brilliant. Evocative of a bygone era and the tunes are still worth listening to today
I was a five. Year old when this record Came on the scene but I can remember my elder sister !icing Al Bowlly singing it. T.Heslop. UK.
My dad used to sing this. Miss you dad xx
We had a gramophone belonging to my great uncle and I loved to dance to the old 78s when I was about 8 . Still have quite a few of the records.
My mother passed away several years ago and she comes back and always request this song I noticed in the video if there's an active volcano? Johnnie was born May 1922 love too y'all from Texas hurricane surf club
Wonderful no one can do the same now,one of its kind
Best Isle of Capri of them All...Tino Rossi one is beautiful too
What a great singer.Died in an air raid on London in jermyn st.was voted as the world's best crooner in the 30 s
Hearing this I am beginning to realize many of the tunes I liked so much when I was a teenager were really composed in the thirties! Good music never goes out of style. And these songs are special they have that touch modern popular music lacks.
I love this sad song , very beautiful ,I go era back feel pain of the destiny 😢🎼💖💖🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
There's a beautiful tango version of this too by Osvaldo Fresedo ... I love the big band era and all the beautiful danceable music!
Maxixe rhythm, look the beat,it's not seen a tango
Recorded in London on 30 August 1934.
Extremely underrated composition. And great vocals from the legendary Al Bowlly. This song is a time capsule into days long gone.
I keep hearing this song on XM Radio's "Savoy Express" and today I heard it played at Perry Mason's party in the 1935 movie "The Case of the Curious Bride" (Errol Flynn's debut - as a corpse!) So I'm glad to find it here on UA-cam!
One of my grandma's favourite songs along with "When I grow too old to dream".
I think that some of this footage shows the home that the late Dame Gracie Fields owned in Capri- great footage, thanks for posting!
nice song and I didnt know Al Bowlly recorded this song, I was still young when this song a hit.. thanks for uploading
The very song that introduced me to the wonderful Al Bowlly
Ah" so lovely, I love the piano playing in this tune.
What an intro They are proper instrumentalists
Love it! I discovered Al Bowlly in 2000 in the UK, looking through the CDs.
Just lovely,thank you.
Recorded August 30th, 1934
Ray Noble & Al Bowlly
A big hit during early and mid 1935
I remember watching mom and dad dance to this.
This is too good... thank you for sharing.
I used to sway along to this playing the old shellac record on my grand uncle's gramophone when I was about eight years old.
It's fantastic! Al also did My Capri Serenade which isn't on You Tube Thanks for downloading this with the lyrics... Bravo
Great tune; written by Jimmy Kennedy, I think. Brandon Shaw sang this tune with his Quartet at the Phoenix Arts Club, London, on 30 November, as part of a tribute to Al Bowlly.
Yes , they all seemed to have such really long prologues!
Just need someone to dance with.
I'll be round in a minute :)
Raggy60 ...... :)
this is a great number,magic!!
This is lovely! Thank you for posting.
Al Bowlly lo maximo para mi
Sheer Brilliance !!
The best of the Big Band Era
God Bless Al Bowlly whos life was so sadly lost during the "BLITZ" upon London.
Emailing through my grandaughter, I do remember a different version of this song! "She wore a swastika ring on her finger" and so on. The war film "Escape to Athena" oppening credits, also uses the same instrumental theme of the same song.
I just found Al 1 year ago, he is up there with Bing and the rest, what a shame his untimely death, My mates laugh at me but what the hell i love him
A nifty little song, Sad, so sad about the Isle of Capri....until all the Damn-ass tourist showed up.....it was so sweet, native...and gay...with the likes of the literati.....
Needed this Treat again. Thanks.
For uncle jack and all the family RIP SueX
Really wonderful........... Terry XXX
I wonder If Gracie was at home when this was shot as her Capri home and hotel are very visable. Nice vintage film thanks.
Very nice, thank you
Good bitta Al Bowlly. Yesh.
Oh Al... sing it again and again... There is another great version without orchestra on UA-cam too. Only Al (singing and play acoustic guitar (!) with the brilliant piano player Monia Liter!
Csodaszép...
But for Al's untimely death he would have been one of the all time greats
bairns1234 Surely he was in any case.
Oh, ye!
So - he was putting the moves on a married chick? I mean I guess he didn't know, but how awkward to kiss her hand; Al Bowlly was used in Kubrick's "The Shining" during the haunted ballroom scenes (notably "Midnight with the Stars and You" among others), and I love his rendition of "Isle of Capris" but it's probably too light for that creepy Overlook Hotel...
@thechinadesk Great point.
@thechinadesk
That's because people danced in those days.
@salthepal The best time ever- even with a war blowing every thing to pieces Al was killed in the London BLITZ
petru romania ah nnostalgia
@kenyakimbo Have you checked out Arthur Tracy (The Street Singer)?
A great job.
You have exposed the Indian song...
Dil Dil se Mila ke dekho.
I like to hear his fantastic voice and his cool British pronunciation. Just as with Spanish tunes that are better perfomed by singers from Spain, English ones are better perfomed by British singers.
I think he was South African.
the music sounds mexican, like a mariachi song.
@salthepal The best time ever- even with a war blowing every thing to pieces Al was killed in the London BLITZ I remember him well
