Chuck schuldiner, Andy LaRocque, Steve DiGiorgio, Gene hoglan... One of the best lineups
+Juan Revilla That's straight fucking all-star line-up mate.
Death's best line up
Infernal Majesty such an underrated band, their None Shall Defy is amazing.
Curious what that has to do with this album, or are you just getting the word out haha
Tony Hess Juan Revilla´s profile picture is the cover of None Shall Defy
Chuck Schuldiner - vocals, guitar
Andy LaRocque - guitar
Steve Di Giorgio - fretless bass
Gene Hoglan - drums
OMG.
personally i think human had the best line up
Chuck schuldiner- vocals guitar
Paul masvidal- guitar

it's hard to get a band with a perfect discography DEATH is one of them
Sadly due to the death of Chuck.
I must have listened to this album hundreds of times over as a teenager. Still love it at 43
Same here bro. At the age of 42. Best Desth-album to me.

More like "Complicated Time Signatures"
Cheesy Cola PLEASE MAKE THIS MAN TOP COMMENT
whats a time signature, i dont understand it in musical note terms
The number and type of notes each measure contains. For example, in a 4/4 time signature, the measure would contain 4 fourth notes. A 6/8 time signature contains 6 eighth notes.
The cool thing about that opening riff is it's so well written it tricked my ear into thinking it was in regular meter for YEARS then I actually looked at the tab and it's actually switching. Haha maybe it's because of Gene's regular hihat hits that come in and out, and I think that was a subconscious influence on a lot of the first material Im gonna release for my band Spectria starting this year. Death is a HUGE influence on me.
psych riffs written in 3/4 or 6/4 or something like that sound like triplets
It’s like Jazz death metal
jazz? lmao you probably never heard jazz.
@@matheusibanez I think he's talking about the complexity, not necessarely the sound
Don’t get too excited please
I mean if we're going to talk jazz Fusion influenced death metal then Cynic - Focus is the one and came out the same year as this. Sean and Paul arguably pushed Chuck towards this amazing sound beginning with Human, Chuck built off that with a forward thinking attitude for ITP and carried those progressive tendancies to the end of his career. Also the Watchtower influence had a part to play in this sound for sure.
@@henrywalton5967 a mayor 7th chord is not jazz
Gene Hoglan has a unique and masterful way of playing notes in spaces of time that are hard to count by a novice ear. His bass drum flares/rolls are as clean as a nun's vocabulary.
Gene and Steve. Magnificent. This doesn't get boring even after a 1000 consecutive listens.
The Atomic Clock!
The bass work is fucking amazing.
Bruh, listen to Nirvana, no one can outplay Krist Novoselic's bass playing. Nirvana was the only TRUE death metal band.
TheSmashingTesticles So true lmao. Nothing more metal than using a sawed-off shotgun as a microphone (;
mac cavanah
What was that supposed to mean?
TheSmashingTesticles It's a really dark and fucked up suicide joke that I probably shouldn't have made
+TheSmashingTesticles lol shut up
Nobody mentions the bassist with his fretless escapades: he is a true genius
his fretless bass runs -melted my jeans -right off of my body !!! summona beetch!!!
We all love him, man! I Like him even better in The Fragile Art Of Existence, tho...
steve digorgio is AWESOME!!!!!
Steve is probably one of the most respected bass players, period. You're off it.
As respected as Steve DiGiorgio is, he does not hold the same level of popularity as some other bass players within extreme metal (like Alex Webster or Tony Choy) which is a shame because his work has always boundary pushing, specially in Sadus
this band does more in one song than most do across entire records!
Or their entire discographies

Crushing solo!
Well , at this point , Death was sounding closer to Prog / Thrash Metal than "Death Metal" per se ...
this is not death metal anymore. by this point.. Death made their own genre
there is no thing as a bad death song, all of them are masterpieces in their own unique way. Death, the most complete metal band to ever exist.
It is from death/thrash to Tech Death Metal, a little bit of progressive, even melodic
Regurgitated Guts is a little bit monotonous though for that matter, and they had an array of forgettable weak songs in their demo era
«Symbolic» and «Spiritual Healing» are kinda boring, as for me, and I'd say these ones have FILLERS (scary XD). Anyways, everyone who knows Death's music can say Chuck was a legend as a composer and professional.
@@user-pdogiP78V I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but I find it odd that you named Symbolic and Spiritual Healing, which just so happen to be my first and second most favorite albums from Death. It certainly rubs me the wrong way to hear them called "kinda boring".
@@Grease-Goblin Actually, I can remove Spiritual Healing because of monstrous growls and some very good riffs. Anyway, there are fillers on this album. But awful schreaming and weird atmosphere on Symbolic makes me uncomfortable. For example, Without Judgement would have been 100 times better if Chuck had sung a bit better. P.S. I dunno anything about cancer, so maybe he was struggling while recording the album.
This band is the Mozart of metal
there is no comparison
Death > Mozart
@@DavidLynch285 amen to that
@@DavidLynch285 I imagine you don’t really listen to Mozart
This doesn't sound like Mozart at all, it's way close to Bach

1. Overactive Imagination
Your existence is a script,
life for you is a perfomance,
play out the leading role.
Directing and premeditating every move
That creates the act of manipulation
Mastering the art of deception.
That increases your sick addiction
It's an overactive imagination
that enslaves your empty shell
[Lead: Chuck]
Existing in dimensions of addictive obsession
[Lead: Andy]
Your script will run short of ideas
The story will soon end itself
People to trust come short in number.
Like a plague your lies spread
fast across the world
Mastering the art of deception
That increases your sick addition
It's an overactive imagination
that enslaves your empty shell
2. In Human Form
People of the earth beware,
It is here in human form
An atrocity laced with greed.
Filled with evil intentions.
Ready to attack
[Lead: Andy]
Look to the air for stories to choose,
Who will be your next victim
Profitting on visions of others,
dark emotions run through its veins
Its motives are false its mind is insane
A distant planet with no signs of life
To become a home for this alien breed.
Scientists of the world unite,
your services are more than needed
This creature in human form is out of control
[Lead: Chuck]
Looks can be deceiving, see beyond the shell
Flesh and eyes mean nothing.
The truth, time it will tell
Before you think you fool the world.
What comes around goes around.
Shown for what you are, a waste of life
[Lead: Andy]
3. Jealousy
What do you want from me,
what is it you expect
I have spoken my mind from deep inside my soul
Behind the eyes is a place on one will be able to touch
Containing thoughts that cannot be taken away or replaced
You want what is not yours, Jealousy
You want what you cannot have, Jealousy
Spiteful harsh words, it comes as no real surprise.
Tell me what you are.
[Lead: Chuck, Andy]
I cannot understand how you seem to exist
On what people create for you, good must turn bad.
Behind the eyes is a place on one will be able to touch
Containing thoughts that cannot be taken away or replaced
You want what is not yours, Jealousy
You want what you cannot have, Jealousy
4. Trapped In A Corner
I want to watch you drown in your lies.
The end of your masquerade, a matter of time
Interwining lies, domination, control
Feed his twisted nature
It is sickening to see dreams die
A word of advice, fate's patience is growning short.
Fake down to your mind and appearance
You will fall short of the dreams to destroy
In time you will find yourself trapped in a corner
These four words my friend, I promise you will not forget
[Lead: Andy, Chuck]
I am one of many that see through your lies
Hiding will do you no good, many seek revenge.
Soon to become a victim of what you live to create, and cannot have.
It is sickening to see dreams die
A word of advice, fate's patience is growning short.
Fake down to your mind and appearance
You will fall short of the dreams to destroy
5. Nothing Is Everything
Living like us and sharing our day.
In another world very far away
A diffirent existence, yet virtually the same.
Aggression is sadness and laughter is pain
Look deep into their eyes for what they have to say
Emotions take control of life everyday.
Unpredictable variations of behavior,
Hold the key to the mental door
Where nothing is everything, and everything is nothing
Staring beyond the wall a thousand times over
[Lead: Chuck]
Seeing a part of them that is real
Just imagine how it might feel
To be denied of what life has to give
Behind mental shadows they must live
Look deep into their eyes for what they have to say
Emotions take control of life everyday.
6. Mentally Blind
You see your vision and no one else's
Your every word filled with sarcasm
Crucify people with invisible knowledge
Verbal destruction with each compulsion
We will see where you go
The future for you is nowhere
Every minute a cliche of your kind
Too much to say from a person with no respect
Your accusations you will regret
From the mentally blind come ideas that are poison
Take away the power, a shallow person you will find.
[Lead: Chuck]
What would you do without your pathetic narrow-minded approach to life,
that reflects your lack of abilities
Your opinions are self-destructive
Despair is your gain, delight is corruption
Destined to fall prey to your stories,
creating problems for your consumption
We will see where you go
The future for you is nowhere
Every minute a cliche of your kind
Too much to say from a person with no respect
Your accusations you will regret
From the mentally blind come ideas that are poison
Take away the power, a shallow person you will find.
7. Individual Thought Patterns
So quick to judge, so easily we forget,
What it's like to be dissected
Where feelings are tossed aside
Like a drug it feeds the imagination of minds that go unanalyzed
Followers to the leaders of mass hypnotic corruption that live their lives only to criticize
Where is the invisible line that we must draw to create individual thought patterns
[Lead: Chuck]
Prisoners of mental deception be free within singular judgement
Twisting words to control the masses
To cover up one's self insecurities
Like a drug it feeds the imagination of minds that go unanalyzed
Followers to the leaders of mass hypnotic corruption that live their lives only to criticize
Where is the invisible line that we must draw to create individual thought
8. Destiny
[Lead: Andy]
Time is a thing we must accept
The unexpected I sometimes fear.
Just when I feel there's no excuse for what happens,
Things fall into place
I know there is no way to avoid the pain that we must go through
to find the other half that is true
Destiny is what we all seek
Destiny was waiting for you and me
[Lead: Chuck]
I believe behind confusion awaits the truth for us
Past the obstacles we face
I value our life and trust
Years of questioning why things happen the way they do in life
Wishing that I could turn back time,
So we could join our souls
I know there is no way to avoid the pain that we must go through
to find the other half that is true
Destiny is what we all seek
Destiny was waiting for you and me
[Lead: Chuck]
9. Out Of Touch
Trapped in a lost world of brutality
So weak are the ones that must rely on shock
to push this so called force that inspires their call
to be extreme so it seems is a mental crutch
To cover up for those that are completely out of touch
Say what you want, I know the truth when it comes to your kind
[Lead: Chuck]
In time we'll see who lasts
In time you will disappear
Who are you to question my sincerity
For now you are high on yourself
Drowning in your dreams of misguided hope
To be extreme so it seems is a mental crutch
To cover up for those that are completely out of touch
10. The Philosopher
Do you feel what I feel, see what I see, hear what I hear
There is a line you must draw between your dream world and reality
Do you live my life or share the breath I breathe
Lies feed your judgement of others
Behold how the blind lead each other
The philosopher
You know so much about nothing at all
[Lead: Chuck]
Ideas that fall under shadows of theories that stand tall
Thoughts that grow narrow upon being verbally released
Your mind is not your own, what sounds more mentally stimulating is how you make your choice
So you preach about how I'm supposed to be, yet you don't know your own sexuality
Lies feed your judgement of others
Behold how the blind lead each other
The philosopher
You know so much about nothing at all
Dude you are a legend
Thank you so much for this ! 🤘🤘❤❤

Voivod is nice.
Whoever made the decision to remove the echo on the word "obsession" in Overactive Imagination should be slapped. Quit fucking around!
pretty sure it's the same guy who mixed and mastered it in 93: Alan Douches, pretty sure it was something forced with the remastering of the original tapes, it kills nothing is everything, but this has been out for 5 years now and I finally got over that fault
The best remaster is the one that came out in 2008. None ever talks about it because hardly any Death fans have heard that particular remaster. It changes nothing, apart from balance the volume and make the instruments more clear, especially drum fills, and it doesn't over-compress everything into a brick wall of noise like this master does. The 2008 one is like the original, but better balanced and more clear. Good luck finding it though! I can't find a legit download of it on the entire internet.

Don’t forget the fifth member of this band - Scott Burns, the only death metal producer who ever got it right.
The "Trapped in a Corner" solo section is on of my favorite moments in all of Death's discography. First Andy put such virtuous lines on display and then Chuck absolutely unleashes. Awesome!
Virtuosic but also virtuous
Chuck managed it somehow to recruit a top 10 bassist of all times and a top 10 drummer of all times at the same time plus the skills of LaRocque 30 years ago, as result in 1993 was released one of the most technical albums of all times.
Also Sean Reinert and Paul Masvidal on 'Human'.

Hey, bro. Edit your comment and fix "plain" to "plane."
Their music is like a symphony. True musicians.
This is one of the greatest albums EVER written. In ALL genres of music. The TALENT that this album composes can compete with any musical artistry that has EVER been composed. ( Put that in your pipe and smoke it Mozart).
Steve Digiorgio, the bassist, alone holds one of the top spots for genius writing on this album. This man is the reason I bought a fretless bass, and to this day strive to play as he played on this album.
INDIVIDUAL THOUGHT PATTERNS... One of the greatest works of art in human history.
It's funny because he is also the reason I am going to get a fretless in the near future
Dude I feel you. Bought this album when it was released in 1993, on tape! (I didn't own a CD player back then). Haven't stopped listening to it since then, which makes it the album I played the most, hands down.

every solo in this album is amazing
Every album from Death is great, but I feel a special attraction for this one. Andy Laroque did a really good job.

They're all diverse yet great in their own way. Just depends on what your preference is
The intro of "The Philosopher" comes to close in an absolute epic way a legendary death metal album.
There´s something spetacular on Chuck´s voice, not only the growling but also the constant harmonic that is part of his own singing.
This was his best year vocally
The guitar VS bass duel at the end of The Philosopher needs to be louder. I wish they didn't slowly reduce the volume on that part. Such an epic duel!

That's the heritage of good music. Timeless, people will still discover this 100 years from now. I started listening to Death at 13 years of age and still do at 42.. Chucks legacy only gets stronger since his passing

One day after band rehearsal in 1994, my bassist gave me this tape to listen to... I was 17 at the time. I was really into both metal, and fusion drummers. Guys like Lombardo, Benante, Menza, Gadd, Colaiuta, and Weckl.

Something I've learned is that DEATH has something for everyone throughout their entire catalog. For some bands, everyone points to maybe one or two of their albums as their favorites. For DEATH, you'll see everyone's favorite album ranging their entire discography.
Not everyone.. there's some that just can't stand the screaming.. unless Death has an instrumental album?

This is probably the most successful Death album in terms of critical acclaim, great songs, classic music video, great lineup, completing the entire tour and Chuck being 100% invested.
One if the greatest bands ever to tour the Earth. Them and Gwar.
The feeling I get from listening to this is indescribable.
Legendary.
one of the best albums of all time. certainly one of the best death metal albums of all time. might be my favorite death album
I am 36 and I discovered Death in my later teens. I have specific memories of moments that seem otherwise insignificant, but this music was there with me and it is kind of fitting given what Chuck says about the subtle things in life, the unseen, always there in the mundane hidden way, human longing for meaning. Working at that time meant nothing to me but I had to spend 8 1/2 hours a day doing it, and then there was making music, the big passion. This was such a fitting soundtrack looking back. The feeling that there is more to life, the longing for just that, the frustration with circumstances, the release through music.... Thank you Chuck :)
I met Gene Hoglan once, super cool guy
tell us about it bro
I met him too once, at a strapping young lad gig (city tour in europe/swiss). Perhaps 100 ppl in the crowd, front row almost empty, was like a private gig. Gave the roadie a piece of good hash i had as a gift for the superb performance. Gene was looking for me at the venue later to thank me in person, hahaha. Golden.
He's tall af
the only master chuck schuldiner can do this beauty, all the elements presents on this record we miss you chuck.
"Nothing is Everything" is my favorite song of all Death work ! So intense ! Guitar, bass lines which are amazing ! and of course, Gene's talent !
On the first three lines Chuck's vocals are unusually heavy and extreme! Incredible experience...
Riff masterpiece. One of their top 4 albums
It’s sick how we can listen to such an incredible album and go, “Amazing. That’s definitely, like, one of their four best.”
My favorite DEATH album. and I love all of the other as well. But there is something about this album that makes me love it 2% more than the others. I don't know if its Andy Laroque's playing. or Gene Hoglan's playing. Or the overall Composition. LONG LIVE TO DEATH.
This and Symbolic are pretty much tied as my favourite Death albums.
Same , this obliterates all others for something I can´t quite put my finger on .
imagine if you didnt like Death. hard to believe.
Because I haven't hear them yet? Sad.
This is one of the most amazing metal albums ever conceived. This is in my top 3 favorites of all time! It still gives the chills listening to it even though I've heard it a few thousand times!
this is real metal
Great old school technical death metal!
For the last ten years, this album has been slowly becoming my favorite in their discography. Still behind "Human" yet
Hands down, this is the best technical death metal album of all times! Brilliant, from its start to the end. Nothing can gets closer to this. The lineup is so masterious! Andy LaRocque's solos are out of this world, and rises the band to the untouchable level for the rest... 🤟👊
It’s the most hated in Death’s catalogue
@@DeanH92 How come?
@@SpaghettiWithMeatSauce I think people see it as a lousy follow up to Human and too progressive for the sake of it.
@@DeanH92progression is a good thing
This album is magic every time
The magnus opus of a really overactive imagination. One of the best albums of all time. In 2019 still listening with same astonishment and still can not chosee which song is the best. RIP Chuck schuldine
Philosophic Metal
My favorite Death album and favorite death metal record!
+Ocean Sage Legendary like Liquid Swords.
Josh Schulz Yes!
+Ocean Sage My favorite as well :)
lol you people are fucking retarted! Death was shit. Go listen to Nirvana's "Nevermind", now THAT'S real death metal right there.
TheSmashingTesticles You're funny.
Chuck is a time traveller 🔥🤯
