  • Welcome!
Today's video is a first time reaction/analysis of Spiritbox' "Blessed Be". Join me in breaking down some of the vocal choices of lead vocalist Courtney LaPlante. I can promise an awesome vocal surprise from Courtney and a rather in-depth explanation for how those cool sounding breathy vocals are created. Really enjoyed both the music and the singing in this one so let me know what else you'd like me to check out from this group.

Loooooooong overdue. Unique band, huge "going viral" success last year, well-earned. Courtney LaPlante is one of my favorite female vocalists since iwrestledabearonce.
Excellent composing and instrumental skills, lyrics, too.
I love this band nearly as much as Jinjer.

    • @Friedensp4nzer

They actually managed to to climb above Jinjer in my personal list, though it's still more a draw. Both albums in my top 10 this year for sure. (:

@@Friedensp4nzer I actually dropped a tear for both bands' genius when I heard them the first time. Literally. Although many years were between these moments. Different strengths and styles, but so much talent, skill and taste that can be heard immediately.
It is more like a small preference by me. Like "stellar" to "out of this world". And I also love this year's albums, both. Fantastic year music-wise.

    • @demoncleaner80
      @demoncleaner80 2 роки тому +4

Man I was bummed that iwrestledabearonce basically died. I liked the two Courtney albums OK (and I believe she's wayyy better in the style of Spiritbox) -- but Krysta was so freaking raw and visceral in IWABO. Their first album still gets play from me a few times a year. This isn't a Tarja/Floor "best singer" type debate of a hill that I'd die on, though...

Love what you said about harsh vocals being a vehicle to deliver raw emotions. It's so true, and you can have angry lyrics and songs as well, but the main reason why I enjoy metal personally, and harsh vocals in particular, is the range of intensity in the melody, songs, voice and contrasts you can play with within the song.
Anyway, love seeing this reaction, there are more great songs within this live performance from spirit box.
Thank you for being you and also glad you are enjoying metal a little :)

Spiritbox's song "Perennial" (not to be confused with Jinjer's "Perennial", totally different song) is the first Spiritbox track I heard, and I wish it would get more love from reaction channels and the like, it's gorgeous. "Rule of Nines (Live One Take version)" and "Holy Roller (Official Video)" are absolutely essential as well, and from there, just take your pick. Such a cool band, every member is insanely talented.. they all look so relaxed when playing, yeah it's not their hardest song, but it's still tricky af. I feel like most musicians that are actually good have always been more drawn to classical / metal / Jazz etc. They tend to avoid 'pop'... I love that metal is getting some more appreciation with reactors reacently, it's a super technical genre filled with insanely talented people :)

What an amazing reaction! And I really enjoyed the biology lesson. I do hope you spend some time at the local Uni and show them this video - I've been waiting for something like for a while.

This was really interesting and even more in depth than I expected. Always fun when you get into the vocal nerd stuff. Lots of people recommending Rule of Nines one take (and for good reason), but The Mara Effect live at Silverside Sound has a bigger range of vocals in it. It is technically 4 tracks from their self titled EP that go together and about 15 min long. If you want something with more screaming, Courtney also has a one take of Belcarra.

I'm not a vocalist. Nor a musician. But I love music and learning. I also now love this channel. I would say 'Holy Roller' is at the other end of the spectrum of Spiritbox. Worth checking out for sure.

This was a really cool video. I liked that you took the time to put actual footage of the vocal folds in there. I've never seen anything like that before so cool! I'd love it if you were to check out Courtney's one take performance of Rule of Nines. Absolute banger of a song, and I think it's one of their more expressive.

If you want to hear another great female vocalist who has an expansive range of harsh and clean tones, I recommend Vintersea (and their vocalist, Avienne Low). A great place to start would be their performance at Slay at Home Festival. It's a "Live in the studio" thing, about 10 minutes, with two songs featured.

If you’ve ever tried screaming, the way she lowers her jaw and curls her lips in the bridge is to produce her low screams indeed. It creates a lot of space for the sound to resonate in, while still keeping them powerful and intense.
I loved the reaction and analysis!

Love the chapter breaks. The breakdown of all the technical gooey things was enlightening. Vocal folds going wacka, wacka, wacka.
The switch from harsh to clean was very fun and your reaction mirrored mine.

wow great explanation I'm glad I dind't skip it. But what really stood out to me was the airy and glottal attack. It reminds my engineering brain of a concept called "duty-cycle" so your note is the frequency, and the duty-cycle is the percentage of time something is on/open vs off/closed and thats what makes these sounds. This is so cool

Great band to react to, Courtney has a unique quality and uses her voice so differently, but also the musically they are very clever. Good live tracks to react to-
    LIVE
Holy Roller - Short song but lots of screaming
Rule of Nines - another good mix song
    OTHER SONGS TO CHECK OUT
    Circle with me
    Hurt You
A FEW TRACKS WITH LITTLE TO NO SCREAMING
    The Summit
    Secret Garden
    Constance

I loved your analysis in this one, Julia, especially the discussion of how the vocal folds work. The stroboscopic imaging was fascinating.
If you are interested in learning more about harsh vocals, I recommend you check out some of the reaction videos on the Kardavox Academy channel. Mark does a pretty good job of explaining them, I think.
