- Welcome!
Today's video is a first time reaction/analysis of Spiritbox' "Blessed Be". Join me in breaking down some of the vocal choices of lead vocalist Courtney LaPlante. I can promise an awesome vocal surprise from Courtney and a rather in-depth explanation for how those cool sounding breathy vocals are created. Really enjoyed both the music and the singing in this one so let me know what else you'd like me to check out from this group.

“Circle With Me” has a bit more belting in it. It’s also from their most recent album and is also catchy as heck.
This
And they just released a 'one take' video of it!
@@Zacharen was coming here to say this but in my heart I knew someone already would have.
@@Zacharen THIS! I also think that performance is even better than the studio version (the ending in particular... I'm sure you all know what I mean)
Circle w m, could be a real anthem. lot of work & levels in one song is the mark of the real hits.
Loooooooong overdue. Unique band, huge "going viral" success last year, well-earned. Courtney LaPlante is one of my favorite female vocalists since iwrestledabearonce.
Excellent composing and instrumental skills, lyrics, too.
I love this band nearly as much as Jinjer.
They actually managed to to climb above Jinjer in my personal list, though it's still more a draw. Both albums in my top 10 this year for sure. (:
@@Friedensp4nzer I actually dropped a tear for both bands' genius when I heard them the first time. Literally. Although many years were between these moments. Different strengths and styles, but so much talent, skill and taste that can be heard immediately.
It is more like a small preference by me. Like "stellar" to "out of this world". And I also love this year's albums, both. Fantastic year music-wise.
Man I was bummed that iwrestledabearonce basically died. I liked the two Courtney albums OK (and I believe she's wayyy better in the style of Spiritbox) -- but Krysta was so freaking raw and visceral in IWABO. Their first album still gets play from me a few times a year. This isn't a Tarja/Floor "best singer" type debate of a hill that I'd die on, though...
Jinjer is def in my top 5 but Spiritbix is my #1. I love everything about this group.
I love when she was in Iwrestledabearonce. The last album was amazing. Now in Spiritbox is another thing.
More like this please. Loved this song!
p.s legend has it that if you set playback to .5 you can see the vocal fold wave in the stroboscopy clip with more clarity.
Spiritbox - Constance
SpiritBox - Circle With Me
Spiritbox is great, they don't make bad songs. Check out "Circle with Me" or "Holy Roller".
Spirit Box "Rule of Nines" Live one take. Has fewer effects on her voice.
SpiritBox - Hurt You
SpiritBox - Perennial
Spiritbox has a one-take version of 'Rule of Nines' which is beautiful, well worth checking out.
Also, 'Circle with Me' is also a really good song to check.
Then Constance & Secret Garden are softer vocals.
I do love me some Spiritbox. Bit of Trivia, Courtney was in a bad called IWrestledABearOnce that formed in 2007. They had some crazy music and crazy vocals and I adored them.
I second that!
I love the last album from Iwrestledabearonce, her voice was brutal and it still being brutal.
100%, this
holy roller and hurt you are great too.
@@TheBananaMan211 I adore Hurt You (I also dig Holy Roller 👍)
Do Rule of Nines next!! Such a great song from them.
and if you watch the one take version you can see her mouth/jaw working through the entire video
@@Daniel-vc8om I was about to suggest this as well! The one take version is perfect for analysis.
Finally Spiritbox. Nice.
Sleep Token - Blood Sport (from the room below)
That song will hit you...
Honestly any song, they’re all so amazing
Love what you said about harsh vocals being a vehicle to deliver raw emotions. It's so true, and you can have angry lyrics and songs as well, but the main reason why I enjoy metal personally, and harsh vocals in particular, is the range of intensity in the melody, songs, voice and contrasts you can play with within the song.
Anyway, love seeing this reaction, there are more great songs within this live performance from spirit box.
Thank you for being you and also glad you are enjoying metal a little :)
That anatomy breakdown was very interesting and unique. Havnt seen that in the typical popular reaction vids. Great stuff
Definitely long long overdue. I'm soooo happy you checked out Spiritbox and picked this song, Julia! This whole SiriusXM live performance is such an experience. Please, you have to listen to the whole show, even if you do it just for yourself without recording a video. I would loooove to see more Spiritbox on your channel because there are so much more to discover about this band. And I already know you will love and enjoy diving deeper into Spiritbox. This bands diversity is absolutely insane. You will be surprised many more times for sure :)
So you taught and I learned something new and I've been introduced to a new group. What fun and my cheeks did not hurt.
Spiritbox is probably my favorite band right now, and I'm so glad you got a chance to react to them! Careful use of breathiness to convey emotion is Courtney's specialty in her clean singing, and you can really see that in "Rule of Nines" and "Constance".
Their Rule of Nines live one take is amazing and would let you really analyze her vocal facial features! Great breakdown as always! Love it!
You could probably pick any Spiritbox song and it would make for a great reaction. Their entire catalog is incredible.
That whole anatomy lesson was brilliant, such a good addition to the reaction as a whole! Would love to see you do a co-reaction with Mark from Kardavox Academy - something from Jinjer or Spiritbox's catalogue would be great for viewpoints on both harsh and clean vocals
If you read what I’ve written Ive studied a little enough to be able to sing like this without destroying my vocal chords .. it comes from lower chest and holding it back before it hits the top vocal chords.. big breath and from your stomach through to chest and semi drone on it .. then release … you will feel it .. if it hurts your throat , your not doing it right
Their new album is a masterpiece. I literally like every song on the album. Please keep doing more Spiritbox! Rule of Nines one take vocal performance is a good place to start next.
Their even newer EP is also a masterpiece
Spiritbox's song "Perennial" (not to be confused with Jinjer's "Perennial", totally different song) is the first Spiritbox track I heard, and I wish it would get more love from reaction channels and the like, it's gorgeous. "Rule of Nines (Live One Take version)" and "Holy Roller (Official Video)" are absolutely essential as well, and from there, just take your pick. EDIT: As of the day I write this, my comment has exactly all the likes it needs, I'm fine if it never reaches 70, honestly. (I just doomed it, didn't I?)
"Perennial" is still my favourite from Spiritbox. I love this song so badly:) There's something sadly haunting there...
I'll add a vote for Perennial, it's a stunning track. As well as the usual Spiritbox fare :D
Perennial is SO underrated. One of their best songs with *those vibes* & the video adds to said vibe 🤘😄
That was one of the songs I listened to on repeat after discovering Spiritbox lol
@@theopinson3851 Same dude 😅
Enjoyed this a lot julia especially the anatomy and physiology 101, super cool, loved it! Thank u:) May u analyse rule of nines one take performance (personal fave:)
please please please do more spiritbox! you're one of my favorite reaction/analysis channels. i think you'd enjoy "hurt you" and "summit"
Something about Blessed Be. It just touches my soul. The lyrics and melody. The whole thing. It's still jam that goes on repeat sometimes....
Go for Holy Roller or Constance, those are pretty much the extremes of what the band do stylistically
The Mara Effect live at Silverside Sound is an experience.
Contraband by make them suffer ft Courtney. BANGERRRRR
I legitimately learned something here and I’m really glad you took the time to explain so well. Thank you . ✌️
Yes! I've been waiting for you to react to some Spiritbox, and Blessed Be was probably my 1st pick (especially the live one you chose), with "the Mara Effect live" being second (but that one is 16 min long)
The Mara Effect live at Silverside Sound is fantastic, musically, vocally, performance and video. All reactors that I recommended this to and who did it loved it.
@@imcrazedandconfused It is a masterpiece.
Also @Julia, if you want some harsh vocals from her, check Holy Roller too
@@imcrazedandconfused the ending of Mara Effect 3 in that video gives me chills every time. The sheer power in the vocals is amazing.
@@dallasclark5533 Do you know why you can not stop listening at the end of Mara Effect 1 or 2? Because IT'S THE EFFECT OF THE MARA!
(Initiated listeners get the meaning... :-) )
You and Mark are the top UA-cam vocalist breakdown people for sure, you guys know what you're talking about, it's fun and informative
I absolutely love how informative your videos are which is exactly why I adore your reactions. There are so many reactions that don't explain the whys of singing and your videos do just that. I have learn so much! Thank you!
I didn't expect to get an anatomy lesson today!
Also!! I highly recommend you check out "Circle With Me" by these guys! It's a wonderful song and further demonstrates what Courtney can do!
Courtney *sings*
Julia: - LETS LEARN ANATOMY!! Hell yeah! - :D
Lovely video!!!
The Charismatic Voice did a video, once, where she stuck a camera through the nose and down the throat of Lorna Shore vocalist Will Ramos and had him do some of his vocal techniques. What really interested me was the twisting motion he makes while he’s vocalising that I don’t think I’ve ever heard a vocal coach discuss before.
@@SuperDeadparrot Yeah that was an insane experiment! Mouth shaping is also a great way to twist the sounds, search for vocal covers of any lorna shore, you will see it :D
i haven't seen any other channel study and break down the physicality of these techniques so closely and carefully as you do. It's interesting and appreciated.
I am once again going to recommend Heilung, “In Maidjan”. From Lifa, their first live performance. Just ask Elizabeth, she’ll tell you how worthwhile it is as a vocal nerd.
P.S. I failed to mention that I really enjoyed the video in general, and the vocal nerd-dom/anatomical breakdown in particular.
Yes!
Please!
Hell yeah! Time to get Jules to react to Maria. Can't wait for that solo.
I see a Spiritbox reaction, I click. But I stayed for the awesome in-depth analysis and personality!
Finally!! These guys are right up as my favorite band! They are so versatile and Courtney kills it on vocals!
Now that they’re off the list, time to recommend a band I have been listening to for a long time now. Dance Gavin Dance - Inspire the Liars
Second this one!! Tillian Pearson is as phenomenal live as he is on track!!
Thank you for taking all that time for explanation! I’m trying to learn more about singing and you always provide great information, but this was even better than usual. I really appreciate it!
When it comes to their live performances, I recommend the following:
1) Holy Roller one-take performance - full harsh vocals song.
2) The Mara Effect live @ Silverside Sound - Shows everything Courtney has in her arsenal, including some of the highest belts she ever pulled off (which she doesn't do that often).
3) Rule of Nines one-take performance that pretty much all YT vocal coaches have reacted to at this point lol
4) Constance reimagined. A rare acoustic performance from them.
Thumbs 👍 up right away! Spirit box!
I love Courtney so much!! Spiritbox is great 🥰
I'll admit, I'm loving these reactions not just for the content, but because I get to hear them from a fellow Aussie.
Beautiful reaction, Gorgeous Julia..Grazie
That was educational :) Would love more reactions like this one :)
Like Tatiana, Courtney keeps getting better.
Unlike Tatiana Courtney is terrible person
@@pedjavukmirovic6770 I don't know either personally but don't judge talent by personality.
@@pedjavukmirovic6770 how so?
@@pedjavukmirovic6770 I have met both,, they are lovely human beings,, get the Fokk out of here troll
Stop comparing these two! It's fucking annoying! Jinjer have nothing in common with Spiritbox other than the singer is female. It's slightly sexist and an unfair comparison.
I had to give a like for the anatomy lesson alone. The clip showing a real larynx, and the visual aid really helped me understand it and the clarity made it enjoyable educational content. Excellently done.
Always a cool thing when you can learn while being entertained. Great reaction.
So, Courtney Laplante is Phenomenal, this was known. But WOW, @julia you are a freeking vocal scientist, this deserves recognition.
Loved this breakdown! It's always so interesting to see how in depth you get with these reactions!
Yessss not enough reactions to the performances from this show
Julia, I love your reactions/reviews. They are the perfect combination of technical vocal analysis, passion/emotion for the music and humor. I can't get enough of this band and Jinjer since I discovered them 4-5 months ago.
This song literally bring tears to my eyes
Love the teaching aspects of this song. Usually I find it drones on with others, but you are not at all boring in the discussions and I find it fascinating.
About time Julia. I would figure you will like Court's style. Her Screams are damn good and her singing voince is breathey, but she in control the whole time.
I'm not usually a fan of music videos but this is one of the few instances where the music and the video go brilliantly together
Of all of the new heavy bands with a female vocalists, SPIRITBOX is definitely my favorite. I love the dynamics in their sound.
This was the best break down of a Spiritbox vocals for this song i have seen. You really tore that down and built it back up. They are an amazing band, the new album is masterpiece. You should try and contact her for a interview, im sure she would love to chat with you.
My favourites on the album are The Summit and Silk In The Strings, the softest and the heaviest track. Both are absolutely stunning in their own way.
Sun Killer
So glad you finally got to Spiritbox, Julia! They are fantastic and Courtney is top tier for sure. Their new album, Eternal Blue, is great, end to end. As others have said, you really should check out the one-take of Rule of Nines to see Courtney sing.
I love the anatomy lessons, personally. I'm always interested in deepening my understanding of what exactly is going on.
love you for this.!! ♥♥
courtney is the epitome of modern female metal singing/screaming. she eats them all for breakfast. her voice is like a bouquet full of razor sharp knives - beautiful and pleasing, but always ready to chop you in half.
for more spiritbox i recommend: just every song, they are all worth checking out.!! for a very good all-in-one represantation of her range, check out 'the mara effect pt. 1-3' live session at silverside studios.
I waited long enough for you to react to this video
*Thank you Dr Julia!!!*
Great Video! Thank you so much for going into that anatomical breakdown of a voice sound. I especially appreciated you letting us know what the orientating changes of the viewing angle were (those always seem to throw me off looking at stuff on Wikipedia)! As a layperson I now have a greater appreciation of voice and what must go into developing the muscle memory of all these techniques singers (apparently) use intentionally in song.
this must be the most interesting reaction video I have ever seen, great knowledge here, and a great band hehe. Awesome work Julia.
Another awesome thing you'll hear in her vocals on certain songs is her cleans coming through in the harsh vocals. Insanely cool to hear
I am SO glad you finally got around to this band. Spiritbox is a great band.
This is the best explanation for what Extreme Vocal techniques are really used for in heavy metal. Please make every non metal head friend you have watch these reaction videos so that they can better understand what we love about this genre.
🤘🤘❤🤘🤘 So Happy you got to this one!!! Much luv and positivity to you from Northern California!!!!! 🤗❤✌🏼
I love your reaction/analysis videos! They're so comprehensive and informative. It's so great to see you talking about something that you're clearly passionate about
Holy Roller by them is a complete jewel. Loved the whole video. Have a nice day, girl.
Such a cool band, every member is insanely talented.. they all look so relaxed when playing, yeah it's not their hardest song, but it's still tricky af. I feel like most musicians that are actually good have always been more drawn to classical / metal / Jazz etc. They tend to avoid 'pop'... I love that metal is getting some more appreciation with reactors reacently, it's a super technical genre filled with insanely talented people :)
What an amazing reaction! And I really enjoyed the biology lesson. I do hope you spend some time at the local Uni and show them this video - I've been waiting for something like for a while.
This was really interesting and even more in depth than I expected. Always fun when you get into the vocal nerd stuff. Lots of people recommending Rule of Nines one take (and for good reason), but The Mara Effect live at Silverside Sound has a bigger range of vocals in it. It is technically 4 tracks from their self titled EP that go together and about 15 min long. If you want something with more screaming, Courtney also has a one take of Belcarra.
YESSSS, been waiting for more blessed be reactions
I LOVE watching how into it you get
I love it when you go vocal nerd. 🤓 Thank you!
I really appreciate the science you put for us to learn. You are so knowledgeable and you express that is such an interesting and soft way that I'm just diving into it 😍
I'm not a vocalist. Nor a musician. But I love music and learning. I also now love this channel. I would say 'Holy Roller' is at the other end of the spectrum of Spiritbox. Worth checking out for sure.
Silk in the Strings too! But no video for that one :(
I’ve watched lots of reactions to harder vocalists from voice coaches and you’re the ONLY ONE who is open minded and actually enjoys the music ! I absolutely love you’re take on this song. Been binging a lot of your videos, absolutely LOVE YOU!
thanks Sheridan! super appreciate that :)
Yes!! I Love Spiritbox and this particular performance is so f... great! I hope Video Julia and Caption Julia also love them hehehe
This was a really cool video. I liked that you took the time to put actual footage of the vocal folds in there. I've never seen anything like that before so cool! I'd love it if you were to check out Courtney's one take performance of Rule of Nines. Absolute banger of a song, and I think it's one of their more expressive.
I have waited so long for this!
Spirit box and orbit culture are most definitely my bands of the pandemic
Big Fan as always!!! Love your work my friend! 👏👏👏
The Mara Effect live at Silverside Sound is amazing. Courtney provides breathiness growling belting and some soulfulness Not to mention the musicianship. Luv your reactions
I love this live version, hope Julia reacts to "Circle with me" also!
I love it when you explain how things work to make sounds, you are so passionate for music I love your channel keep up the great work. Love from Missouri U.S.
Super informative video, certainly learned a lot here. Great song too. Thanks for sharing Julia
Courtney explained it in past interviews. When she was in the band iwrestledabearonce, she just screamed her head off. Now, she has skill and range.
If you want to hear another great female vocalist who has an expansive range of harsh and clean tones, I recommend Vintersea (and their vocalist, Avienne Low). A great place to start would be their performance at Slay at Home Festival. It's a "Live in the studio" thing, about 10 minutes, with two songs featured.
Her voice is so warm! :)
Edit: I need to check them out properly now! :D
Update: the album is SICK! 🔥
OMG... I can't believe you have not reacted to Spiritbox yet! This is the best version of this song done yet so awesome to hear your thoughts. *Edit* Was waiting for your reaction to when she goes from the harsh back to the cleans immediately and was not disappointed haha!
Love watching your analytical and curious mind working through your thoughts about what you are hearing.
If you’ve ever tried screaming, the way she lowers her jaw and curls her lips in the bridge is to produce her low screams indeed. It creates a lot of space for the sound to resonate in, while still keeping them powerful and intense.
I loved the reaction and analysis!
One of my favorites from the Eternal Blue release is THE SUMMIT.
Phenomenal band. Great reaction. 🤘🤘🤘
I love watching you. You're so great. :)
Love the chapter breaks. The breakdown of all the technical gooey things was enlightening. Vocal folds going wacka, wacka, wacka.
The switch from harsh to clean was very fun and your reaction mirrored mine.
Questions, queries, musings and wonderings.
Spiritbox is amazing! Next… Sleep Token. The Offering, Blood Sport (live from the room below), Higher, Atlantic, Hypnosis. Amazing instruments and the vocalist is amazing. One of the most unique voices ever. Sleep Token🔥
I’m impressed by the thoroughness of the explanations behind the mechanics of the singing. I was expecting just a very simplistic reaction to the song itself, but you went the extra mile to make it educational.
You didn't get the hint when you saw it's 36 minutes long? Haha disappointed in you mate
Vancouver Island, Canada continuing to be well represented by Spiritbox and Unleash the Archers! :)
Please bring tissues when you check out Spiritbox - Constance; make sure you watch the official video for it!
wow great explanation I'm glad I dind't skip it. But what really stood out to me was the airy and glottal attack. It reminds my engineering brain of a concept called "duty-cycle" so your note is the frequency, and the duty-cycle is the percentage of time something is on/open vs off/closed and thats what makes these sounds. This is so cool
Loved this and glad you loved it. Try Circle with Me next!
Great band to react to, Courtney has a unique quality and uses her voice so differently, but also the musically they are very clever. Good live tracks to react to-
LIVE
Holy Roller - Short song but lots of screaming
Rule of Nines - another good mix song

A FEW TRACKS WITH LITTLE TO NO SCREAMING
The Summit

This album is 🔥
I loved your analysis in this one, Julia, especially the discussion of how the vocal folds work. The stroboscopic imaging was fascinating.
If you are interested in learning more about harsh vocals, I recommend you check out some of the reaction videos on the Kardavox Academy channel. Mark does a pretty good job of explaining them, I think.
