My hope is that if they don't introduce new characters, they will take the LoL route and heavily modify existing characters. It's a great way to breathe new life into the game and update old mechanics for modern times. Give Mario some cool Cappy mechanics (or whatever the next 3D Mario game's gimmick is), modernize Samus with her Dread abilities, etc.

A condensed and cleaner cast would be absolutely amazing. I wouldn't mind getting rid of half the characters easily if they made them all cool as hell
