Omg dude, the list is growing. So sad. I will be crushed the day we lose Mark. Luke Skywalker was my childhood hero and Mark is my hero as an adult. Just an incredible human being.
and may the force be with you huston we mark the end of a 45 year history of the space shuttle with star wars in memory of carrie fisher tragically lost during STS 225
No one can truly appreciate how revolutionary of a film this is unless you saw it when it first came out. We had never seen special effects anything like this film has. I saw it 3x. Some saw it 10.
I was 9 and my dad was a sci-fi nut, which made me a sci-fi nut. We went 12 times, I remember my mom asking why we keep seeing the same movie over and over.
The entire LOTR Return of the King ending is really epic, but of course being based on books versus Star Wars originally just being one film makes them different. ROTK just refuses to end heh
It doesn't get any better than this. Puts a big smile on my inner-12 year olds face.. remembering when I first saw this in 1977 and blew my little mind. Saw it at least 50 more times. The most common utterance in my household from me saying, "Mom, can we see Star Wars again?" "Haven't you seen that enough?" "No."

I saw this movie at the cinema when I was 12, and I'm now in my 50's. No matter how jaded we become with age, this movie will always bring out our inner-child.
He absolutely DID get a medal, she couldn't reach over his head so he bent over and she placed it on him then he let out his wookie noise.... this version is the new one, the Mandela Effect has changed yet another movie.
The greatest "mission accomplished" scene of all time! After all these years, every time I see this scene I still get goosebumps and a big smile.....It only pains me to remember what Disney did to Luke Skywalker. HE WAS THE NEW HOPE.
Imagine with ending of Episode IV almost comparable to Episode I Episode I -- Freedom Day Finale Episode IV -- Throne Room Finale That was worth being truly amazing 'mission accomplished' masterpiece EVER.
Though the conservatory is later cleared up by having Lucasfilm say that Chewbecca never got a medal because they don’t really mean much to wookies and the Rebel Alliance later visited Kashyyyk Chewbacca and his wife and son plus species’ home planet to hold a celebration with the wookies to honor Chewbacca in aiding Han Solo in helping Luke destroy the Death Star while some Canon and Legends chapter books and comics claim that Chewbecca did get a medal like Han and Luke did but not during the public ceremony for unknown reasons. The Rise of Skywalker (2019) the final film in the Sequel Trilogy makes a reference to the conservatory by showing Maz give Chewbacca Han Solo’s medal that Leia held onto before her death as a remembrance of Luke Skywalker who died in the Battle of Crait in The Last Jedi (2017), Han Solo who died in the Battle of Starkiller Base in The Force Awakens (2015) and Leia Organa who lastly died during the Mission to Kef Bir and Kylo Ren and Rey’s last lightsaber duel in The Rise of Skywalker (2019). The non-canon Droid Tales (2015) episode, Mission to Mos Eisley a retelling of A New Hope (1977) takes a humorous take on the conservatory by showing while during the Royal Award Ceremony in that version of that story C-3PO distracted by the safe return of C-3PO accidentally drops the tray with Han, Chewie and Luke’s medals of bravery on it and while Luke and Hans’s medals remain intact, Chewie’s breaks in two explaining why he never got a medal. Later in Gambit on Geonosis while on the Forest Moon of Endor the rebels were celebrating General Maximillian Veers’ defeat C-3PO gives Chewbacca back his medal now glued back together.
Many viewers and Star Wars fans while loving the ending to A New Hope (1977) where in the aftermath of the Battle of Yavin and the destruction of the Death Star, Grand Moff Tarkin’s death and Darth Vader’s escape a ceremony is held at the Rebel Base at Yavin 4 by the Alliance to Restore the Republic to Han Solo and Luke Skywalker for helping destroying the Death Star and saving Yavin 4 and the Alliance to Restore the Republic from it’s destruction before the Rebel Alliance excavates the moon to avoid being captured by the Galactic Empire who know knew the location of their base following the Battle of Yavin and was planning a counterattack was great, disliked that while Han Solo and Luke Skywalker got medals, Chewbecca never got one at all. Creating controversy over why Chewbecca didn’t get a medal and if it had to do with his species (Only human rebels get medals) or if he didn’t get one out of cold blood.
But,with Governor Tarkin and the rest of the Empire Goons dead,Vader under direction of the Emperor is in complete charge now,and will be out for blood.
I swear, when I get married on day, I want to walk down the aisle to this music, and if I get so damn rich, I'm going to even have the entire set built for me.
I was seven when I saw it in the theatre. It blew my mind. I am 52 and I still absolutely love the original trilogy. Not crazy about the rest, especially Disney facsimiles. I wanted 'The Force Awakens' to hurry up and finish when I saw it. The magic ended with Return of the Jedi.

@@d.t.4581 I think the three sequels are much better than the three prequels. "The Phantom Menace" and "Attack of the Clones" are almost painful with the bad dialogue and wooden acting. I think the sequels are much better written and acted, although "The Last Jedi" had too many side plots.
Luke Skywalker’s flanderization and death in The Last Jedi (2017), Han Solo and Leia Organa’s deaths in The Rise of Skywalker (2019) and The Force Awakens (2015) plus Darth Sidious’s ressurction to be killed by Rey and fufuil the Choseon One prochery instead of Anakin Skywalker in Return of the Jedi (1983) was all done just to prop up Rey, Finn and Kylo Ren/Ben Solo and contribute to their character arcs and developments which is very insulting over treating the old Star Wars characters like trash and kill them off and change their personalites in favor of the new ones. I am gald that The Mandarolian, The Book of Boba Fett and Ashoka never made the same mistakes with their characters. (Old Star Wars characters and new ones.)
Sam Richardson Hm... depends on Star Wars lore... perhaps Wookies are just really hairy humans.. and Twi-leks are humans with tentacle hair or something... etc...
May 25, 1977, film maker George Lucas released science fiction film "Star Wars", it became a instantly global phenomenon, "Star Wars" the greatest science fiction fantasy of all time.
This scene has a double meaning. Not only are they taking a bow for their heroics against the Empire, but the main characters are taking a bow as in a stage play for the incredible film they just starred in. It's the greatest scene of Star Wars and a perfect ending to start off the incredible series. I saw this when it first came out when I was in Junior High. Still remember how it felt, the theater, and where I sat. It was revolutionary.
I was 5. My dad took me and my brothers to the Avco Cinema in Westwood. I cried in terror at the opening when the Star Destroyers attacked Leia's ship! I had never seen or conceived of anything like it.
I love Luke's smile at the end. It's what makes this scene so satisfying watching the journey he goes on and at the end he's just so happy and with the music and everything... This is what victory looks and sounds like. This is how I feel when something good happens to me.
The only one that comes close, in my opinion, is the ending to Episode I. The music there is just as epic, and a great way to immortalise movie endings.
What makes this scene for me (in addition to everything else), are Carrie Fisher's eyes throughout as she switches from showing her appreciation, admiration, and platonic love for Luke to expressing but mostly holding in her flirtation with her attraction to Solo....She really controls the scene with some masterful switches of emotion just with the expression of her eyes. Top notch. The original Star Wars was/is the greatest.
@@d.t.4581 It's also before she started doing drugs every day. Thus, her healthy, chubby look. Three years later, with Empire, she looked less of both. By the third movie, they were giving her easy lines to say... She actually carried many scenes in this movie.
It's the only ending that chokes me up whenever I see it. I remember seeing the movie when it first came out. Had to go to a midnight showing -- that was all that was available. The audience cheered at the end.
@@ChipCadence Well the way I remember that he did He had been way down and she had to stand on a tippy toes to get it around his neck it was almost comical. Damn it, this is Dolly's braces all over again.
The music in this scene is, beyond a shadow of doubt, some of the finest in cinema. The raw feeling of success and joy it evokes is incredible. The scene itself is perfectly written, set, shot, and acted, of course, but it would be nothing without the score; it is merely background while the London Orchestra does all of the emotional heavy lifting. This was true of all the finest of Star Wars: so powerful is the soundtrack, and so reliant are the movies upon it, that listening to the songs on their own evokes powerful memories of the scenes. It is the ultimate prototype of how sound and cinema should be combined. No other film does so fine a job.
The best movie ending of all times. The best movie score of all times. The perfect musical piece for a quintessential part of human culture. May the force forever be with you, John Williams.
I Love this ending, its so simple they destroyed the death star, so natuarlly they thought it was over, its such a happy ending, but they dont know of the impending doom that awaits them in the Empire strikes back, its like they're celebrating and happy, not knowing what they are in for in the next movie so awesome, and love the music during the ceremony.
The music is, obviously, what made the series what it is. EPIC! If it wasn't for John Williams, it would have been another space movie that floped. Maybe it would have done a little better that the previous attempts at space movies, but it never would have been what it is.
The Empire still has more ships like fleets of Star Destroyers to go after them which had been established earlier in the film. It obviously wasn't the end of the war.
Is it just me or does this music give you a huge adrenaline rush? Like you too could take on a huge death star on your own like Luke? Or swoop in at the last minute to save the day like Han and Chewie? Probably just me.
Will forever be the highlight of the first Star Wars movie. This ending was perfect in every way with the music. I’m glad rise of skywalker gave chewie the credit he deserved cuz he really was part of the final fight saving the mission.
No words have to be spoken in this entire sequence. The visuals and John Williams score says everything that needs to be said. That's visionary genius. Period
Chewbacca finally got Han's medal in episode 9. I think he should have had his own still. He did his share in rescuing Princess Leia and getting insulted when she called him a "walking carpet". His last vocalization in this scene was him saying "where is mine??" Species discrimination happening here. Poor Chewie
This ending is so iconic, feels like it gave birth to the whole SW legend all across the world and made movies enter into a new Age What a moment it must've been in theaters
My dad saw this masterpiece in theaters when it first dropped and said he was absolutely floored by its utter perfection and of course he made me a die hard years later when I was born. He said when the film ended he felt like Luke stuck on Tatooine because he had to go home and cut grass while they’re all out saving the galaxy. R.I.P. dad! May the force be with you! ❤️🫡
My wife gave this to me as a gift. Once we had said our vows and the ceremony was over, she told me “listen for the surprise.” As we turned and faced everyone this song played and the only thing I could do was smile like Han and walk down the isle with the love of my life.
This comment makes me _so_ happy, because I've always planned to use this as my "walk down the aisle" song if I get married. Its cool to hear a story from someone that did, that sounds amazing. Especially since it was a surprise
Ben Kenobi's theme as an up-tempo march. We hear the slow and contemplative version throughout the film, almost ingrained in our subconscious, and now it grabs us unexpectedly in an intense, triumphant version -- which is still, even though it's a celebration, in a minor key, which represents the seriousness of Ben Kenobi. I saw this in the theater in 1977 when I was not quite 7 years old, and I remember the feeling I had walking out of the theater. I think everyone was stunned by what they had just seen, which culminated with this extraordinary Throne Room scene. No talking, just majesty.
Good point on the minor key! Ever since I left that theater in Chicago at age 9, totally entranced by what I'd just seen&heard the last 2 hours, I had always felt the minor key underscore is in tribute to all the X-wing pilots, Rebel soldiers, spies, etc who died to save the galaxy from the Death Star and evil. Somehow I'd never connected it with the fact that Obi-wan's sacrifice was of course also a key part in this ultimate victory scene. Very nice observation🙏🏻✝️💖
Excellent point! I had to go back to Kenobi’s theme… ua-cam.com/video/vFX5XBuRZgE/v-deo.htmlsi=GNXh-RnF5hBPIQg2 the throne room version just makes the ending perfect.
If you guys wanted to know why chewy never got a medal I have two explanations: 1. Lore-wise: Wookies don't care about medals due to their culture so he rejected it before the ceremony. In old cannon Han forced him to take it right after the ceremony but in the Disney cannon (barf) Maz Kanata gave it to him after defeating Palpatine the second time for some reason. 2. Real world reason: Leia's actor was too short to put it on Chewbacca's 7 foot tall actor so they decided to just not to.
@@GoobNation I think in legends Dooku and the Emperor are racist. It’s the in universe reason as to why the empire only employed white humans in the OT
Everyone looks so young and fresh here...Carrie is just lovely..even they didn't know how big the STAR WARS franchise would be and how much it would change their futures..Love the music
My favorite Scene in the entire Movie, we need more happy Moments, peaceful Moments like this l'm, l'm so tired of seeing our World being torn apart, we must hold ourselves accountable and persist in having our World that we love so very much to be Unified.
Just in terms of composition and cinematography, this ending hits better than any other. Such a triumphant and powerful vibe to it. And the musical transition into the main theme is brilliant (though it isn’t controversial to say that John Williams is a genius).
This scene is what started it all, I was a little kid when I first saw the movie which was a couple of years old already. I'm in my forties now and never imagined this thing would become part of my life and the most remarkable part of it is that I'm not alone...
This scene and music still gives me goosebumps. Makes you feel like u have truly nailed the impossible. One of the best endings to any movie of all time.
In a very very distant future, this saga will still be remembered, because there has never been and will never be anything better,or more beautiful, complete and iconic than SW.
It just blows my mind when I see this scene, I realize how many of those legendary figures are no longer here with us. Carrie Fisher, Peter Mayhew, David Prowse, Kenny Barker, and so many others have become one with the Force. Thank you all for gifting us with one of the greatest moments of our childhoods! ❤
@@xninewxw7559 the only species I've seen doing that are the species with a snail-like structure for their head and their mouth on the side of what we'd consider to be a neck. they wear a translator over that mouth and have been seen sassing multiple people on multiple occasions
Kind of a raw deal for Luke. Leia at least got adopted by Senator Organa - she lives on Alderaan in a cushy life, she becomes royalty, she probably gets to go out for steak and lobster on holidays - while ol' Luke is Uncle Owen's whipping boy on that desolate Tatooine, replete with hot summers, sand storms, sand people, and Uncle Owen making him harvest crops. I bet Luke didn't even have time to masturbate or anything. Talk about injustices. I wonder if in the new Star Wars, Luke can communicate thru the force with Anakin and just say "Dad, look, what the fuck. You could've at least left me some Penthouse magazines along with the god-damn blue lightsaber"
+Peppermint Snowdrift "I'D be more worried about him during "Return of the Jedi", because, well, everybody knows what happened at the end of THAT movie! LOL!" Why? Things seemed pretty good for Luke at the end of ROTJ.
That's incredible how much Luke's journey changed in this movie when you begin to think about it. For 19 years he was raised by his aunt and uncle and after his old caretaker comes to save him from Sand People caused by one of the Droids recently purchased by his uncle, to then find out the Empire is after them. When returning back home they are both burned alive. He goes on with Ben to then find Han and Chewbacca who can help transport them to save the princess. When going to Alderann they find out it was destroyed and then get captured by the Death Star. After rescuing the princess Ben ultimately dies. Then Luke goes off to war in the Battle of Yavin where several of his friends are killed in combat. Han returns back and helps him destroy the Death Star. Now from initially being an orphan (tbh) raised in Tatooine to becoming a Rebel Alliance Hero.
This movie is just so good on a child like level of vicariously feeling triumphant. Preceded by the most exciting climax of the film and the greatest change of heart character arc ever, cinema will never again give audiences what this film gave to those of us lucky to have been there in 1977.
Thank you for posting this clip! Was just watching Friday Night Tights and they were talking about the importance of movie scores and I immediately thought of this scene, the score here has always stood out to me as the perfect cap to the triumphant victory. Had to watch it again right away!
I love how Chewie growls as he walks toward the front chewie knows he is to be rewarded for his admirable part take The beautiful Princess Leia not to be forgotten
This is how you film a scene! No dialogue, you can tell everything by the expressions on their faces. The music fits the scene and is perfectly paced. And best of all, no annoying CG to take you out of the experience. If George Lucas was making this scene today, he'd have filmed it with a green screen, thrown in all kinds of aliens that look horrible, and would have had JarJar yelling in the background.
At 1:19 when Luke looked down smiled at R2 it reminds me of her mother Padme at the end of episode I when she smiled at young Anakin. Like Mother Like Son
And this scene is one of the many reasons why IV is my favorite. Chills with that music and captured essence of the 1970s in a film that had never been seen before and could never be replicated again
Cada vez que veo este final de Star Wars se me llenan los ojos de lágrimas, y el corazon se acelera. Aquí se conjugan la música increíble de Jhon Williams, con la escena espectacular, uno de los mejores logros cinematográficos de todos los tiempos.
This song plays when you complete prequels and original trilogy and you are given the medal of official star wars fan by Leia who represents star wars fandom

Its not bad but I prefer Battle of the Heroes myself
No one can truly appreciate how revolutionary of a film this is unless you saw it when it first came out. We had never seen special effects anything like this film has. I saw it 3x. Some saw it 10.
I would give anything to go back in time and experience the whole OG Trilogy when it first came out
We went into the theater not knowing what to expect. Then Darth Vader walked onscreen. Blew me away. You could feel the evil. I'll never forget it.
I saw it at least 10 or 15, minimum, drove my dad absolutely insane.
@Ed I would give anything to experience that. It makes me so jealous.
I was 9 and my dad was a sci-fi nut, which made me a sci-fi nut. We went 12 times, I remember my mom asking why we keep seeing the same movie over and over.
Not a word was uttered in this scene, yet you can tell exactly what each character is thinking and feeling. Truly a masterpiece of a scene.
Words were uttered in this scene. Chewy asked several times why he wasn't given a medal.
@@jesse_cole I think Chewie was giving instructions to Luke and Han and then calling for applause.
@Jesse Cole My entire head cannon for what Chewy says is just him talking about wanting to get a medal.
Except for R2-D2 excited beeping
It’s simple Wookies don’t accept medals and han said I asked him, Chewie said he would rather have a steak
This is about as perfect an ending as you'll ever see in a movie.
The entire LOTR Return of the King ending is really epic, but of course being based on books versus Star Wars originally just being one film makes them different.

The greatest "mission accomplished" scene of all time!
After all these years, every time I see this scene I still get goosebumps and a big smile.....It only pains me to remember what Disney did to Luke Skywalker. HE WAS THE NEW HOPE.
Imagine with ending of Episode IV almost comparable to Episode I
Episode I -- Freedom Day Finale
Episode IV -- Throne Room Finale
That was worth being truly amazing 'mission accomplished' masterpiece EVER.
Good thing that the Ahsoka series made the Sequel Trilogy completely irrelevant

+super blue more like science fantasy
+super blue I think its more of a soap opera (space opera) about family :) Not much science fiction actually.
Wow!! That’s such a great way of thinking about this scene!!
The movie, the story, the execution of it and the amazing special effects. This movie and the episodes 5 and 6 transcend time. They are masterpieces.
@@nehru0310 I totally agree. The magic seemed lost after Return of the Jedi. Episode 1 was a bore, but I will still take it over Disney Star Wars.
Ahsoka: Tarkin, Yularen, Ventress, Padme, Aayla, Plo Koon, Mace, Eeth, Obi-Wan, Bail, Saw, the Inquisitors and Maul are gone......

This is my favorite ending to any movie ever, period.
Best movie ever :P
Louinho Callewaert I agree with you 100%
My favorite ending is the ending of Rogue One. As it smoothly slides into A New Hope
The only one that comes close, in my opinion, is the ending to Episode I. The music there is just as epic, and a great way to immortalise movie endings.
@@Harmthuria And it is modified Emperor's theme, which means all goes by his plan...
Carrie Fisher was hot back then. I believe she was 18.
@@d.t.4581 It's also before she started doing drugs every day. Thus, her healthy, chubby look. Three years later, with Empire, she looked less of both. By the third movie, they were giving her easy lines to say... She actually carried many scenes in this movie.
Maybe the greatest ending scene ever in the history of movies. Just perfect.

Really late on this lol, but episode 4 was made to be a stand-alone film, but yea great ending.
The music is, obviously, what made the series what it is. EPIC!

John Williams created a true masterpiece with this scene. Such talent.
If you guys wanted to know why chewy never got a medal I have two explanations:
Another reason is because of racist foundations = only white people receive medals. Blacks, Wookies and droids were sidekicks.
@@dimitristripakis7364 blacks? There's no human racism (canonically) in star wars
@@GoobNation I think in legends Dooku and the Emperor are racist. It’s the in universe reason as to why the empire only employed white humans in the OT

LOL!"

The best final and music ever. I saw this movie when I was a kid. I love it.
