No one can truly appreciate how revolutionary of a film this is unless you saw it when it first came out. We had never seen special effects anything like this film has. I saw it 3x. Some saw it 10.
I would give anything to go back in time and experience the whole OG Trilogy when it first came out
We went into the theater not knowing what to expect. Then Darth Vader walked onscreen. Blew me away. You could feel the evil. I'll never forget it.
I saw it at least 10 or 15, minimum, drove my dad absolutely insane.

I was 9 and my dad was a sci-fi nut, which made me a sci-fi nut. We went 12 times, I remember my mom asking why we keep seeing the same movie over and over.
This is about as perfect an ending as you'll ever see in a movie.
The entire LOTR Return of the King ending is really epic, but of course being based on books versus Star Wars originally just being one film makes them different.

It's the only ending that chokes me up whenever I see it. I remember seeing the movie when it first came out. Had to go to a midnight showing -- that was all that was available. The audience cheered at the end.

I love Luke's smile at the end. It's what makes this scene so satisfying watching the journey he goes on and at the end he's just so happy and with the music and everything... This is what victory looks and sounds like. This is how I feel when something good happens to me.

The greatest "mission accomplished" scene of all time!
After all these years, every time I see this scene I still get goosebumps and a big smile.....It only pains me to remember what Disney did to Luke Skywalker. HE WAS THE NEW HOPE.

That was worth being truly amazing 'mission accomplished' masterpiece EVER.
Though the conservatory is later cleared up by having Lucasfilm say that Chewbecca never got a medal because they don’t really mean much to wookies and the Rebel Alliance later visited Kashyyyk Chewbacca and his wife and son plus species’ home planet to hold a celebration with the wookies to honor Chewbacca in aiding Han Solo in helping Luke destroy the Death Star while some Canon and Legends chapter books and comics claim that Chewbecca did get a medal like Han and Luke did but not during the public ceremony for unknown reasons. The Rise of Skywalker (2019) the final film in the Sequel Trilogy makes a reference to the conservatory by showing Maz give Chewbacca Han Solo’s medal that Leia held onto before her death as a remembrance of Luke Skywalker who died in the Battle of Crait in The Last Jedi (2017), Han Solo who died in the Battle of Starkiller Base in The Force Awakens (2015) and Leia Organa who lastly died during the Mission to Kef Bir and Kylo Ren and Rey’s last lightsaber duel in The Rise of Skywalker (2019).
The non-canon Droid Tales (2015) episode, Mission to Mos Eisley a retelling of A New Hope (1977) takes a humorous take on the conservatory by showing while during the Royal Award Ceremony in that version of that story C-3PO distracted by the safe return of C-3PO accidentally drops the tray with Han, Chewie and Luke’s medals of bravery on it and while Luke and Hans’s medals remain intact, Chewie’s breaks in two explaining why he never got a medal.
Later in Gambit on Geonosis while on the Forest Moon of Endor the rebels were celebrating General Maximillian Veers’ defeat C-3PO gives Chewbacca back his medal now glued back together.
Many viewers and Star Wars fans while loving the ending to A New Hope (1977) where in the aftermath of the Battle of Yavin and the destruction of the Death Star, Grand Moff Tarkin’s death and Darth Vader’s escape a ceremony is held at the Rebel Base at Yavin 4 by the Alliance to Restore the Republic to Han Solo and Luke Skywalker for helping destroying the Death Star and saving Yavin 4 and the Alliance to Restore the Republic from it’s destruction before the Rebel Alliance excavates the moon to avoid being captured by the Galactic Empire who know knew the location of their base following the Battle of Yavin and was planning a counterattack was great, disliked that while Han Solo and Luke Skywalker got medals, Chewbecca never got one at all. Creating controversy over why Chewbecca didn’t get a medal and if it had to do with his species (Only human rebels get medals) or if he didn’t get one out of cold blood.
But,with Governor Tarkin and the rest of the Empire Goons dead,Vader under direction of the Emperor is in complete charge now,and will be out for blood.
Good thing that the Ahsoka series made the Sequel Trilogy completely irrelevant

The music in this scene is, beyond a shadow of doubt, some of the finest in cinema. The raw feeling of success and joy it evokes is incredible. The scene itself is perfectly written, set, shot, and acted, of course, but it would be nothing without the score; it is merely background while the London Orchestra does all of the emotional heavy lifting. This was true of all the finest of Star Wars: so powerful is the soundtrack, and so reliant are the movies upon it, that listening to the songs on their own evokes powerful memories of the scenes. It is the ultimate prototype of how sound and cinema should be combined. No other film does so fine a job.

I saw this movie at the cinema when I was 12, and I'm now in my 50's. No matter how jaded we become with age, this movie will always bring out our inner-child.

Is it just me or does this music give you a huge adrenaline rush? Like you too could take on a huge death star on your own like Luke? Or swoop in at the last minute to save the day like Han and Chewie? Probably just me.

Chewbacca finally got Han's medal in episode 9. I think he should have had his own still. He did his share in rescuing Princess Leia and getting insulted when she called him a "walking carpet". His last vocalization in this scene was him saying "where is mine??" Species discrimination happening here. Poor Chewie

In the legends X-wing series, they do say he got a special commendation for being the only person to survive both death star battles
This scene has a double meaning. Not only are they taking a bow for their heroics against the Empire, but the main characters are taking a bow as in a stage play for the incredible film they just starred in. It's the greatest scene of Star Wars and a perfect ending to start off the incredible series. I saw this when it first came out when I was in Junior High. Still remember how it felt, the theater, and where I sat. It was revolutionary.

I was 5. My dad took me and my brothers to the Avco Cinema in Westwood. I cried in terror at the opening when the Star Destroyers attacked Leia's ship! I had never seen or conceived of anything like it.
What makes this scene for me (in addition to everything else), are Carrie Fisher's eyes throughout as she switches from showing her appreciation, admiration, and platonic love for Luke to expressing but mostly holding in her flirtation with her attraction to Solo....She really controls the scene with some masterful switches of emotion just with the expression of her eyes. Top notch. The original Star Wars was/is the greatest.

I Love this ending, its so simple they destroyed the death star, so natuarlly they thought it was over, its such a happy ending, but they dont know of the impending doom that awaits them in the Empire strikes back, its like they're celebrating and happy, not knowing what they are in for in the next movie so awesome, and love the music during the ceremony.
Really late on this lol, but episode 4 was made to be a stand-alone film, but yea great ending.
The music is, obviously, what made the series what it is. EPIC!

I was 9yrs old when Star Wars came out and I saw it in the theater a couple times. I'm 53 now and this scene still gives me chills!
I was seven when I saw it in the theatre. It blew my mind. I am 52 and I still absolutely love the original trilogy. Not crazy about the rest, especially Disney facsimiles. I wanted 'The Force Awakens' to hurry up and finish when I saw it. The magic ended with Return of the Jedi.

@@d.t.4581 I think the three sequels are much better than the three prequels. "The Phantom Menace" and "Attack of the Clones" are almost painful with the bad dialogue and wooden acting. I think the sequels are much better written and acted, although "The Last Jedi" had too many side plots.
Luke Skywalker’s flanderization and death in The Last Jedi (2017), Han Solo and Leia Organa’s deaths in The Rise of Skywalker (2019) and The Force Awakens (2015) plus Darth Sidious’s ressurction to be killed by Rey and fufuil the Choseon One prochery instead of Anakin Skywalker in Return of the Jedi (1983) was all done just to prop up Rey, Finn and Kylo Ren/Ben Solo and contribute to their character arcs and developments which is very insulting over treating the old Star Wars characters like trash and kill them off and change their personalites in favor of the new ones. I am gald that The Mandarolian, The Book of Boba Fett and Ashoka never made the same mistakes with their characters. (Old Star Wars characters and new ones.)

Ben Kenobi's theme as an up-tempo march. We hear the slow and contemplative version throughout the film, almost ingrained in our subconscious, and now it grabs us unexpectedly in an intense, triumphant version -- which is still, even though it's a celebration, in a minor key, which represents the seriousness of Ben Kenobi. I saw this in the theater in 1977 when I was not quite 7 years old, and I remember the feeling I had walking out of the theater. I think everyone was stunned by what they had just seen, which culminated with this extraordinary Throne Room scene. No talking, just majesty.
Good point on the minor key! Ever since I left that theater in Chicago at age 9, totally entranced by what I'd just seen&heard the last 2 hours, I had always felt the minor key underscore is in tribute to all the X-wing pilots, Rebel soldiers, spies, etc who died to save the galaxy from the Death Star and evil. Somehow I'd never connected it with the fact that Obi-wan's sacrifice was of course also a key part in this ultimate victory scene. Very nice observation🙏🏻✝️💖

Just in terms of composition and cinematography, this ending hits better than any other. Such a triumphant and powerful vibe to it. And the musical transition into the main theme is brilliant (though it isn’t controversial to say that John Williams is a genius).

If you guys wanted to know why chewy never got a medal I have two explanations:
1. Lore-wise: Wookies don't care about medals due to their culture so he rejected it before the ceremony. In old cannon Han forced him to take it right after the ceremony but in the Disney cannon (barf) Maz Kanata gave it to him after defeating Palpatine the second time for some reason.
2. Real world reason: Leia's actor was too short to put it on Chewbacca's 7 foot tall actor so they decided to just not to.
Another reason is because of racist foundations = only white people receive medals. Blacks, Wookies and droids were sidekicks.

Episode I: _The Chosen One_
Over 1,000 years before The Phantom Menace..
As it begins there are no Jedi nor Sith, just force sensitives living in temples practicing midichlorianism.
Subsequently. One of these 'force monks'; Alorod Sim the Wise of the temple on Koriban, creates a radicalized faction or 'force cult'. They build lazer swords to arm themselves (the first lightsabers) and proclaim themselves the 'Sith'.
They then proceed in marauding bands of personalized star fighters/land speeders, commandeering starships and overtaking worlds', attempting to conquer the galaxy in the name of their beliefs and fulfill their Sith prophecy of supremacy over non-sensitives.
800 years have surpassed....[56 years prior. Sith Lords adopt the moniker 'Darth' to signify their rank.]
The Sith have amassed a considerable territory. With thousands of outlying star systems now under their oppressive rule.
Having recently overran the Doqhit system, after a tense battle with the Quitai army. The Sith led by Darth Sion dispatch a royal convoy headed for the Core worlds.
They massacre its crews and take Princess Xenead hostage, demanding tribute from King Novis of Coruscant; leader of the Alliance of Sovereign Systems.
Just returned from his final defeat of the Vong General Wibo. Novis incites his Spartan warriors to stand against Red Legion; an interplanetary confederacy allied with the Sith, led by the evil alien warlord Malik.
The King gos to the Temple to consult Yaddle; the wisest of all force monks, about the fate of his daughter and his fortunes in battle. Yaddle then departs Coruscant on a peace mission to end a civil war between Wookie tribes and the Kashars on Kashyyyk.
In the first major battle of the war. Malik's fleet is besieged by Alliance forces over Opelia, but the attack is thwarted by Red Legion. Malik vowing swift retaliation
In a pivotal event known as The Siege of Coruscant. The Sith storm the Temple, declaring its monks "Join us or die!".
A troubled young orphan raised in the bowels of Coruscant (father killed in the Vong Wars) named Gandryth Malgus, defects and becomes a Sith acolyte. The Sith gain control of the Alliance capital. Forcing its dignitaries to take refuge on the mountainous world of Cedes; a heavily guarded military stronghold.
On Cedes. The royal delegates convene in the Cedetian palace chambers. King Novis is declared Supreme Chancellor of the first Galactic Republic and pledges to reinforce its defenses after over a century of warfare with the Yuzhan Vong.
Meanwhile, the surviving monks seek out the sacred Kyber crystals, build there own lightsabers, and begin training themselves in the art of swordsmanship under the guidance of the living force and mock battles with melee droids.
Hence becoming the founders of the Jedi Order. Yaddle meets a force sensitive Alliance pilot named Talon Karade, who seeks to learn the ways of the force. Yaddle dubs him Padawan meaning 'student' in old Coru. [End ep1]
[During the period between ep1 and ep2. Malgus kills Darth Krait to become the Sith Elect of Coruscant, and is dubbed Darth Nihilus. One of the most powerful Sith ever. Nihilus is said to have slain over 30,000 Republic and sum 62 Jedi.]
Episode II: _Knights of the Old Republic_

The once great King Novis has died and is entombed on Tarvel.
The Jedi Knights find themselves in the midst of a Republic effort to re-take Coruscant in his honor.
Overwhelmed during the fight, the Sith and Red Legion attempt a retreat. Yaddle gos to inspect the ruins of the Jedi Temple where he encounters Darth Nihilus and a duel ensues. Nihilus is wounded by a slash to the neck but narrowly escapes thanks to his starfighter's astromec droid T5-S.
The tides now turned.
The Jedi [Including Master's Rolin Vassis. Dia Jade. Lux Banter. Hodo'Na. Satile Mara & Eath Koth] set out behond the safety of Republic space, into the Sith dominated Outer Territories in pursuit of the Sithari (One Sith); who claims to be conceived by the midichlorians and is said to be immortal.
Meanwhile, Yaddle would return to his home planet of Churwahi where he would be married to Tola; Queen of the Wahians.
Now a competent force wielder. Talon Karade embarks on a solo mission to free the war prisoners of the Legionary slave ship _Vengeance_ . Using a confiscated Legion fighter, he gains access and frees the captives who take up arms against the remaining crew, before Karade encounters and defeats Legion Commander Thron . Exiting the ships hanger, Karade is intercepted by Darth Rage in his starfighter. After a brief dogfight, Karade is shot down on the nearby moon of Jantude 7.
On its surface, Darth Rage is narrowly defeated by Karade in a clash of lightsabers. Stranded. Karade learns of the Sith world of Koriban and persuades a group of smugglers to take him there.
Lightning breaks as Talon Karade and company rondevu at the gates of the Sith enclave in the Valley of the Dark Lords. Sensing a disturbance in the force. Darth Nihilus tells the Sithari to leave the planet before taking several acolytes to meet the Jedi. Nihilus himself is engaged by Jedi's Lux Banter & Satile Mara and who are both slain.
This distraction allows Karade and Yaddle time to free Xenead and the rest of the Sithari's servants before making a dashing escape. Leaving the planets atmosphere, pursuing Sith fighters clash with the Republic's 88th Squadron as the legendary Battle of Koriban commences. Back on the surface, Darth Nihilus takes his L9 _Dagger_ battle speeder to assist Red Legion.
The Jedi receive Medals of Valor from Xenead, who will succeed her father as Supreme Chancellor. Afterward, the Jedi knights gather to honor the passing of Satile Mara, Lux Banter, and others who's remains are ceremoniously burned in keeping with midichlorianist tradition. [ End ep 2]
[During the period between Ep 2 and Ep 3. In revenge. Darth Nihilus would launch surprise attacks against Jedi Temples across the Galaxy (including Yavin 4). Massacring many Jedi, including renowned Jedi Masters Teo Vi Shan and Cin Drallig.]
Episode III: _A Fallen Hero_
Republic forces led by General Leer are attempting to retake Vaknum; a metallic world overseen by the Sith Elect Darth Nemesis. In an event known as The Liberation of Vaknum. Republic infintry must locate and dismantle a self-detonation device before it melts the planet.
During the fight, Yaddle manages to defeat both Acolytes trained under Nemesis, and finally Nemesis himself. On Vaknum, the Jedi discover Malik's design for a planet-sized superweapon and take them back to Coruscant.
Meanwhile, Talon Karade and fellow Jedi Exar Koon are sent to the planet Saazish to investigate the assassination of a local Senator but the situation quickly escalates into an all out conflict. Known as the Saazite Rebellion.
Amid the fighting, the Saazites release their God-beast Eneddra on the Republic, and its up to Karade and Koon to defeat him. Karade remarks "I have a bad feeling about this".
During the Battle of Koriban, the Sith Temple was destroyed by Republic artillery. Forcing the Sith to relocate to Tyranus; one of the original 13 worlds of Red Legion.
In response to the reliquishment of their Sith homeworld. An uprising occurs on Tyranus, but is ultimately put down by the Sithari and his loyalists.
One of the leaders of this insurgency, Darth Bane, turns himself over to the Republic, promising the location of the Sithari in exchange for his pardon.
A coalition of Jedi and Republic are sent to infiltrate the polar base on Tyranus but, anticipating an attack, are ambushed by Malik's fleet. An epic battle erupts. Its here that the Sithari would meet his end at the hands of Yaddle after an intense climactic lightsaber duel.
Elsewhere, Talon Karade brazenly takes it apon himself to dismantle the shield generator onboard Malik's command ship _Assassin_ . Forseeing this, Darth Nihilus awaits him. Overpowered during the duel. Karade's arm is severed by Nihilus who, before finishing him foretells "A day will come when your Jedi Order will perish, and the Sithari his great name shall be redeemed" vvvmm!!"..Malik is destroyed along with his ship, and the last vestiges of Red Legion disappear into hyperspace.
Later on. Darth Nihilus is seen returning to Tyranus to recover the Sithari's lightsaber. That which would become his most coveted possession. [End ep3]
The Sithari slain and their prophecy broken, the Sith receed into exile for a millennia. A long lived Thridian, Darth Nihilus would encrypt the "Rule of Two" into the Sith holocron.
700 years later apon his death, Nihilus would apprentice a young Muun Jedi dubbed Darth Plagueis and pass on his knowledge of the Dark Side. (Palpatine would later assinate Plagueis in an attempt to claim the Sithari's lightsaber, after which the spirit of Darth Nihilus would take possession of him).
The former unclaimed Sith territories (including Tatooine; a former orbital ship building hub of Red Legion) would be known for centuries as the Outer Rim.
In the centuries that followed.
The Jedi Knights would attempt to seek out the illusive Sith remnant to no avail. Yaddle profisizing the birth of a 'Chosen One' that would one day bring the force back into balance.
Talon Karade for his heroic deeds is memorialized in the Jedi archives. Subsequently, Yaddle and his surviving confidants would found the first Jedi Council on Coruscant.100 years after the Battle of Tyranus, Tola would give birth to a son named Yoda.
Genetic enhancement of soldiers would be outlawed, and the Republic would be without a proper military until the Clone Wars, relying heavily on the Jedi Order to maintain peace and justice in the Old Republic.

I saw this movie in the theaters in 1977 thirteen times. My Dad, God rest his soul, came with me probably 10 of those times. Great memmories, but I also just noticed that poor Chewie didn't get a medal. Hmmmmm.
I was 2 when this came out. Emire was my first film, I was I don't know 6,7 maybe...all the parents gasped when Vader told Luke he was his father, obviously we know why!
Enjoyed it as a kid and still enjoy it as an adult, one of the few movies you enjoy no matter what age.

I like to think that I’m Luke Skywalker, the badass hero, but I’m Chewie, the hairy guy with no medal.
That's incredible how much Luke's journey changed in this movie when you begin to think about it. For 19 years he was raised by his aunt and uncle and after his old caretaker comes to save him from Sand People caused by one of the Droids recently purchased by his uncle, to then find out the Empire is after them. When returning back home they are both burned alive. He goes on with Ben to then find Han and Chewbacca who can help transport them to save the princess. When going to Alderann they find out it was destroyed and then get captured by the Death Star. After rescuing the princess Ben ultimately dies. Then Luke goes off to war in the Battle of Yavin where several of his friends are killed in combat. Han returns back and helps him destroy the Death Star. Now from initially being an orphan (tbh) raised in Tatooine to becoming a Rebel Alliance Hero.
