“Dude, we’re playing Star Wars for John Freaking Williams!”
“Dude, I know, we totally are!”
This is the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra..They host the biggest conductors for the best part of the last century. Them doing Star Wars is probably John Williams dream come true, he said " the invitation to work with the Wiener Philharmoniker was one of the greatest honours of my life”.
@Europa Nostra lol....you can train all your life, and never even make it into the top 200 applicants for a seat to this orchestra...they are genius players , each of them. they're in the city of Vienna , Mozart's world. Strauss... Who so you think Williams studying while becoming a composer. You know nothing about Europe's music, nor American Hollywood music. A dimwit lost on UA-cam.
Honnestly, who wouldn't be proud and in total fan-attitude if conducted by this legend, on this legendary music.
For Star Wars, Indy Jones, Lost in Space....etc!! Freaking Awesome!!! 😀❤❤❤❤
Exactly!! John FRICKIN Williams :D
My grandfather played violin in this original soundtrack. Sadly he passed away last night but it's good to know that his recordings still live on!

My deepest sympathies. I nearly cry every time I hear this music. His legacy lives on indeed!
This is an example of why music education is so important in our schools and in our communities. I mean, John Williams started taking piano lessons when he was a kid, and also learned brass instruments. Along the way, he studied arranging and composing. He then began working as a pianist, arranger and composer. All through that time, he had teachers.
Then you take the musicians in the orchestra. They all started on their instruments with a teacher. When you hear people like this perform, you're listening to a combined hundreds of thousands of hours spent practicing. You're also listening to (probably) a combined hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on lessons and higher education. You're also looking at well over a million dollars' worth of instruments and instrument insurance.
My point is, that without music education, music teachers and the strive to become as good as you can be, concerts like this would not happen. It's this wondrous composer and these stunningly good musicians and their teachers who make it happen.
Where I am, the minister of education has decimated arts for STEM. Unfortunately not everyone is cut out to be an engineer. There are those that are cut out to be musicians, artists and story tellers. I'm an engineer, but I have this stuck on my wall at work: "If we were a medical school, and you were here as a med student practicing appendectomies, you'd take your work very seriously because you would imagine that some night at 2 AM someone is going to waltz into your emergency room and you're going to have to save their lives. Well, my friends, someone at 8 PM is going to walk into your concert hall and bring you a mind that is confused, a heart that is overwhelmed, a soul that is weary. Whether they go out whole again will depend on how well you do your craft". Every once in a while I 'catch' someone staring at the text. I think they are the people walking into the concert hall.
@@johncebasek6252 Very nicely put.

This is the best rendition of this song I've heard. The Vienna Philharmonic really knocked it out of the park.
imagine being in a cinema in 1977 and hearing this masterpiece for the first time omg
Yup I remember that afternoon in the summer of 77 as a 7 year old. Our sleepaway camp took us on a field-trip to see the movie. Sitting in the dark theater and hearing the first note blast thru the theater as the Star Wars logo appeared on the screen and we knew we were in for something special. Even with the sequels which I saw in the theater but don't hold a fondness for hearing the first note and seeing the logo still gives me goosebumps and takes me back to that summer in 1977.
Saw it on release at Starlight drive inn and it was sooo beyond belief, truly magical and mind blowing at the same time back then.
@@adamn7516 i was born ten years after the release of Star Wars…I envy you all lol. Wish I could have had that incredible experience you described

Another film that came out the following year that gave me that same feel during the opening credits was Superman. I remember seeing the remake in 2006 and they used the same original opening score and even though the remake was not nearly as good as the 1978 original even at age 36 I still got goosebumps as the first notes of John Williams score played.
The Superman score and the Star Wars score are still two of Johns best.
@@adamn7516 oh yes, another classic released before I was born. I’m sure that one was an incredible experience as well. More like 2:47 is what a culmination of a life's work looks like.
Hans and Ramin? I mean . . . maybe? But no.
I wouldn't be able to hold my tears!!
Culmination of a live's work? XD Dude, he plays in the Wiener Philharmoniker... Most possibly the culmination of his life's work would have been playing some Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Bruckner, Mahler or Richard Strauss at the Salzburg Festival under some great conductor. Here he is just having one of the best times of his life.

i was four years old when i first heard this theme..Sitting in the backseat of my parents station wagon in a drive in movie theater in 1977...im 48 now and this theme STILL gives me goosebumps..
My Dad was 9 when he saw it at the drive-in in Adelaide on a warm summer night in ‘77, and it was the experience of a lifetime for a kid growing up then I reckon!!
Born in '94 and raised with Starwars and Startrek being my favorite movies thanks to my parents also loving them.
This theme will never get old, never not be fantastic in ever way!
Indeed
I am 62. I took my nieces and nephews to the drive in to see the film in Los Angeles weeks after it was released. We still talk about it.
Change 'station wagon' to 'Chevy Nova'....and that was me, too.
I was seven years old when my dad took me to see this in the movie theater. To a little kid, that movie blew my little mind. I was no longer on earth, I was out on missions in the universe. It wasn't going to school on the bus, it was a mission to save Alderan. It wasn't going to get groceries with mom, we were going to save the princess from the space station. We weren't at the beach, we were on Tatooine searching for Droids! No book or movie changed my view of self or literature like Starwars. That day in 1977 was created a life long Sci-Fy fan!
Keep flying and stay Shiny
I was 7 or 8, cannot remember what day we saw it, but about the same. Swings on the play ground were Xwings.
0:38 when you and your bros realize what a freaking honor it is to be part of this moment.
The films are good, but John Williams scores make them incredible. The scores are ones that we will never forget and always know when the first time we heard them!
The first movie i saw with his music was Harry Potter 1
The movies are only as good as the music ;)
This is only true for the original 3 prequel movies. The score far exceeded the movies after those.
"Without John Williams, bikes don't fly and neither do brooms in Quidditch matches nor do men in red capes. There is no Force, dinosaurs do not walk the earth. We do not wonder, we do not weep, we do not believe."
-Steven Spielberg, AFI Lifetime Achievement Award speech for John Williams
31 years and still get goosebumps hearing this
My only regret was to never play this when I was in an orchestra... then again, we only had wind instruments (no strings thus no violins), and I was playing the saxophone. So the range of sutff we could actually play was quite limited.

Hi
...and on the 7th day God rested...and listened to John Williams
😁
Just incredible all around. To think...many musicians in this orchestra were the little kids who first saw Star Wars when it was brand new. What a thrill it must be for them to be where they are now, with this master composer and conductor, playing music of their childhood. It is heart-warming and joyous. As a musician, I get the feels no matter what. But this performance had some extra something special. The force was with them all, for sure. Bravi tutti.
When you think of which composers/conductors had stood in this exact spot to now be his turn, I am sure Mr. Williams felt honoured immensely himself and so we come full circle in a beautiful way.
@@Flex2212Yes, I'm unsure if Beethoven did his 9th in this or a similar building. But performing this with Williams was probably somewhat similar to being chose n to premiere the 9th with the old genius on stage and a non-deaf conductor keeping the tempo.
It is mid-summer 1977. We have heard so much about this movie from family and friends that we decided it's OK to take our oldest son, who was five, to see this movie. Our other son was just two at this time and much too young.
Thru our credit union at work my wife got reserved tickets so we would not have to wait in those looooong lines. As such when the theater opened we who had reserved tickets were allowed in 10 minutes before everyone else. So we got our popcorn, soda, and candy first, then we were escorted to the reserved seating area in the center of the theater with other families.
With our son sitting between us, the rolling script comes on and I read it to him. I can see he is transfixed, staring at the screen.
From that point on until the end of the movie some two hours later his eyes never left the screen. He hardly ate any popcorn or drank his soda!
Usually when we would take him to a movie, while it's playing he would ask us questions about what's going on.
Not this time. Other than a yip, or a laugh, or some other reaction, his eyes never left the screen!
When it was over, the people screamed and applauded with joy at what we had just seen.
IT WAS AMAZING!!!
Now I have all the Star Wars movies on DVD and VHS. Full packages all.
But there is nothing like when I saw that first Star Wars movie with our son so many years ago!
To be honest, the lines and the wait only fuled the antcipation.
I had a similar reaction to watching Superman - the movie in 1978 in my local cinema. The audience was nearly all "grown-ups" but we were all like kids in the Saturday morning kids cinema. When Superman caught Lois Lane with one hand and the helicopter in the other and the people down below on the street all cheered - so did we in the cinema. It was areal life enhancing experience. The very next day I was ordering the soundtrack records in my local music shop. I have them today and treasure them still a life enhancing experience thanks to Maestro Williams
I have tears in my eyes ... what else can I say?
I can't believe Williams is 89 years old. Hope he will live as long as it's possible. One of the greatest composers of our time. God bless you, John!

on't get carried away, i love John Williams music, he is a Genius, but don't forget Beethoven , Bach and many bothers.
What I like about his scores, whether it's Star wars, Raiders, Superman, ET, etc, he prepares the audience, and it tells the story. Pure musical genius!
It's a holdover from the traditional grand opera. Each main character gets their own theme and "upcoming arias" are hinted at in the overture. You basically compose backwards: first the final theme, then use fragments earlier (nowadays we might call it foreshadowing). There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. John Williams is always open about his writing techniques. His ability to write complex dovetailing phrases and melody lines (counterpoint), while maintaining everything accessible, is absolutely sublime. Definitely my favorite film composer.
How does he keep coming up with masterpieces ?!
Seeing the trumpets trying to play through their smiles... brings a tear to the eye.

Perfect rhythm and the incredible sound is just out of this world, thank you Wiener Philharmoniker and of course thank you Maestro Williams.
Not to mention the DG technicians who recorded it for us.
I must say, I find this recording really charming. It shows that professional musicians sometimes fall into the same pits as amateur musicians do (at least we did, when we played Star Wars). Hence the maestro’s alarmed look at the trumpets (0:24-0:27) who lost tempo at 0:21 by dwelling on the high note for too long… ;-)

Absolutely amazing music. A masterpiece. The greatest composer of our time and up there with the masters.
I‘d put Hans Zimmer before him, but it is very, very close. Williams is an absolute genius.
I don‘t say that Hans Zimmer doesn‘t do good movie soundtracks. I just say that in 50 years, no one will remember his music - and John Williams will be mentioned in the same breath as Bach, Mozart, Vivaldi an the other true giants in music history. Cheers from Germany ps: I remember waiting in line for three hours as a 10-year-old when „Return of the Jedi“ premiered…. John, you are the GOAT 🇩🇪🇺🇸
I saw the first three movies in the theater when they first came out. There was something magical about when the title hit the screen and the music started. No movie has ever been able to capture that moment the way Star Wars was able. I think it is the most iconic start to a film in history.
John Williams has literally written every memory I have from growing up

Conductor and genius John Williams, you are a genius, thank you for making me travel beyond the stars, may the force be with you forever...🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
I watched this movie in a theater when it was released in 1977. I was 13, and I was just blown away by the whole experience. This is a great performance of the classic theme! 👏👏👍👍
It’s so cool to see all the faces in the crowd at the beginning. Rested expressions turn into smiles, covered mouths, and nods in awe.
John Williams is the man.
Hi 👋
It just doesn't get any better than this.
4:19 will always be one of my favorite motif from any movie. Thank you Maestro. 💙
The best version of this theme that I have ever heard...just perfect...incredible sound...I love this. Legendary John Williams, the goat. May the Force be with you.
I watched it when it first came out. The lines stretched around the block. Then two movies were shown, one after the other…this really really changed movies….and John’s music just elevated the emotions to another level…if only you could have seen and heard when we did….
