Awesome, I replaced the screen and digitiser on my phone and after taking a very long time to put it back together again the mute button wasn't working. This was a great and easy fix to my problem.

Thanks! My iPhone was stuck on silent mode after switching to "do not disturb" while I slept. After waking, and turning do not disturb off, I couldn't unmute it. The mute/unmute button wouldn't switch it over. I tried your method, and it's now working correctly!

And if the icon gets annoying for you, after you unmute to make everything work, you can turn assistivetouch back off and everything will still be unmute. but then you are stuck with a phone that you can't silence which I am fine with.
