I have a Hedgehog living in my garden. My garden is tiny but full of snails. Also I have a hedgehog feeding station which is emptied every night. I love hedgehogs!💖
Been blessed to have hedgehogs visiting the garden since 2017 when I first discovered them, had hoglets born in the garden last year & through April & most of may this year I've had 4 or 5 out there each night with all four hog houses occupied most days. Absolutely love these precious little creatures.
I made a hole in the bottom of my garden gate a few years ago & have had a constant stream of hoggy visitors ever since. There are two feeders for them, multiple water containers & a nesting box which is used every winter by somebody.
Hi there and lovely to see you doing your bit for nature .Hedgehogs are amazing and if people did get correct fencing, watch out when driving, never feed bread and milk and most of all look carefully in any piles of leaves in their gardens before having a garden fire ..it would make such a difference... Great to listen to you amazing facts and always presented with fabulous enthusiasm 👍.Have a great week Best wishes and greetings from Berlin🌻 Helena 👋
This week I was driving home from work in the early evening and a hedgehog ran right out in front of my van from under a parked car! I got out, picked up the hedgehog, carried it across the road while speaking to it softly so as not to scare it and settled it down safely in a garden on the other side. I was a little tempted to bring it back home because I have a big garden safely away from roads but I thought I'd better not in case it had a family or something nearby. I always love to see wildlife and hedgehogs are quite uncommon round here (UK). 😊 Been a fan of hedgehogs ever since I played Sonic 1 as a kid! 😆
I got hedgehogs in my garden I haven't seen them for years til I moved to my new home, so my neighbour and I are doing what we can to protect them kocally. These beautiful creatures are my all time favourite creature in the garden.
I turned my garden over to berry producing shrubs and ground cover. I got some logs from recently cut down trees to rot down and encourage insects. The lawn was reduced to a tiny patch of grass. I am happy to say that roving hedgehogs found my garden for all the natural goodies it now has. I cut one of the panels on my back gate to make for easier access.
Thanks. The channel is growing so hopefully one day it'll be much bigger.. the most important thing is that people get something out of the videos though and I think I achieve that :)
Thanks once again for another excellent video! I would encourage everyone to watch the ads and don't skip them as Liam deserves some cash for these brilliant videos!
We regularly have hedgehogs in our garden. We feed them during the season and recently have had to take several underweight ones to a local rescue centre.
We currently have a family of 4 coming every night to our garden so we feed them and put a bowl of fresh water out with the hedgehog pellets (from Maltby Stores online at Amazon). Shame we're moving house soon but the young couple moving in will be taking on the feeding etc as they're really excited to be gaining the hedgehogs lol.
Love Hedgehogs. We used to get them in our garden quite regularly up until about 3 years ago. Need to get my trail cam back into regular service. Great facts video as always Liam. 👍🙂👍
Learned something new there - didn't know they had more than one litter! Great footage and info, thanks! We have one that visits our garden. I have a trail cam and have seen it on there. Chuffed!
Always good to hear people fighting the hedgehog's corner - as a lad I would often see 10 or more in a 1hr nightly stroll around the village - I'm very sad to say , here and now , 45+ yrs later , I live in an area that "should be" / "is" a natural paradise for them - I've only seen one , twice , since 2013 , fairly sure it was same hog - haven't seen her again last three yrs . I'm out every day and night - they're just not here😞 ~ they should be !!? Can anyone help ? Hedgehog's Cornwall ?? It seems even hedgehog rescuers are in competition to be "the only one doing anything" and not particularly supportive of "new ?" folk's ideas of helping ?
I knew I had a hedgehog visiting my garden but only recently I purchased a trailcam did I find there could be up to four as the footage shows different sized ones and in one vi deo two at once, one much bigger than the other. It has also shown the activity in the Bumblebee nest I constructed and a mouse that lives in my seedstore.
Hi, I've recently found your channel, and I'm working my way through your back catalogue,, 😀, have you done a video about Arctic Terns, ? We've just come back from watching them up in Northumberland,, All the best,,, John..
I have at least a dozen that visit daily (got a camera) - every day throughout winter, I put out kitten biscuits (same as advised by hedgehog charity) and water, so had daily visitors who weren't strong enough to hibernate. And in spring/summer, as a treat, I put out wet cat food as well as biscuits and water. I'm so lucky to have them visiting! I have a hedgehog highway, and they have at least 3 or 4 different entry spots. They thrive round here! And also, I hear the huffing and watch their mating rituals- the dance that can go on for hours, him sniffing all round her. The ladies seem more interested in eating that nookie!! I ADORE my hedgehog visitors - really heart warming to see so many, eating and drinking, and sometimes mating!
Not usually, as there's non stop hedgehog activity and they clear the plate in a couple of hours, so they keep away. And the odd one or two that do sniff round, they're clearly fussy as they sniff it and walk off! (I caught them on my camera). If it becomes a problem, I'll use a feeding station but haven't had to yet over the last couple of years.
We've got one, possibly two out the front. We live on the outskirts of London, in Surrey but it's the first time in 10 years. And my first time ever seeing a hedgehog. Now trying to learn more about them so we can feed them appropriately. They have to share with the foxes though, they all come and eat together, though one of the foxes is a bit unsure of this prickly little ball. :)
How great that you are seeing them for the first time this year. No matter what you read, do not give them mealworms. Good luck and I hope they continue to visit you :)
We have Hedgehogs 🦔 in our garden and they sometimes share our Tortoises over night shelter sleeping in there during the day as it is full of straw. We never feed them Bread and milk but they do like a bit of cat food now and again.
I love hedgehogs I quite often get them in my garden at night the outside light comes on when they wonder through you did not show the funny things that they do a friend helps rescue them and puts out boles of food for them its comical to watch them one will come and make a start eating the food but then another one comes and starts fighting so the first one will roll up in a ball seeing this the other one will push/roll it away from the food to the other side of the garden its so funny.
Hello Tom. I was wondering after you the other day but got distracted before I could search out your channel to see how you were getting on. I'm sure it seems a lifetime ago now, how has the hip healed? I might be over NI in the springtime, i'll be flying into and probably staying for a night in Belfast so it would be great if you could point me in the direction of any wildlife hotspots nearby.
Wow Liam, Great to hear from you. The hip is grand, in good shape. I'm able to walk for miles. I am only sad for folks left largely housebound, in pain and without hope because successive governments have done remarkably little to address lengthening waiting lists. I could go on a rant at this point but I'll spare you! lol Yes that would be great to get together. Remember I am just an interested amateur. My knowledge is patchy. I am a good bluffer though! lol ( You may want to contact someone more knowledgeable in the loca RSPB or BTO. ) I have met up with quite a few Northern Ireland UA-camrs over the years. As you know bird spotting can be very hit and miss. One day the birds are there the next gone. Many of the good sites are unfortunately a bit of a distance away ( 25 miles + like Portmore or Lough Beg ) but there are some good spots in round Belfast. It obviously even depends on what time of day you visit. We often stretch our legs and strain our eyes in round the outer edges of Victoria Park Belfast. The Belfast RSPB run, WOW Centre is always good. They have an on site team of expert amateurs to guide your eyes over the coastal lagoon. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.
Thanks Liam, love your vids. Each year we have many hedgehogs visit our garden. A cat proof food station keeps them coming. Chicken & Duck dry cat biscuits only. Unusually, this year, 3 small hogs have kept coming all through the cold months. My theory is they know they are too small to make long hibernation? Each is growing but still not the size of a bag of sugar. Autumn Juveniles & as you helpfully stated, possible siblings? Keep up your good work Liam.
Thank you so much and a belated welcome to the channel! I hope you have found lots of videos that you enjoy here. The channel has grown a lot since you came and its thanks to people like you who watch and comment on the videos. Cheers!
Just a tip Liam. Dunno if it helps. I used to be a licensed bat worker, often out all night with my ultrasonic detector. One night I was able to track a hedgehog, across a field for perhaps 200yds, without moving. You sort of got the idea when it had found food because the sound would change.
Best snail - and slug killer ever! Also mice. Make a hole in your fence, leave some water out, make a step in your pond in case they fall in, and leave a pile of leaves/branches undisturbed in shady but dry gardencorner. Lovely to watch them scoot about: every day around same time if you put some food/drink out. I collect gardensnails for them: everybody happy without using poisons.
Snails & particularly slugs are actually dangerous to hedgehogs as they carry parasites (fluke & lungworm) which may ultimately kill hedgehogs. They usually only eat them if there's nothing else available.
Would love to see hedgehogs in my garden. I'm sure they are there but never seen them about. 🦔 💚 I'm going to set up a trail cam one day 😂👍 thank you for sharing this video xx
Thank you. They enjoy the taste of peanuts but they have all the wrong nutrients for them, too much sugar and can cause their teeth to rot unfortunately. Meat based cat or puppy food is the best thing people can give them (aside from proper hog food).
Europe's favorite mammal?! Americans are missing out. I've only heard of them as cuddly adorable pets. Loads of great facts and your documentary style voice is perfect!
Here in The Netherlands it is not allowed to keep hedgehogs as pets. I had to keep one in the house over winter once though, because my little dog found one in the snow while it should have been underground having his winter sleep, so I had to take it home or he would have died. It got along great with my dog and cat, and they all ate together. I put him outside in the garden next spring, and saw him a few times over many years after that, and I think his offspring is still here :)
Have them now also in my garden. They like to hide under my Hosta's in the shade. Still need to make them a shelter. Will do next year. For now i'm feeding cat food. Have enough water in my garden for the other animals. But made some extra at ground level. And made a feeding table for some birds. The edgehog doesn't like some of the insects and peanuts. Normaly i throw that on the ground. But it's not good for them.
Was driving home this evening. About to turn into my house, I seen something on top of the driveway. Was a hedgehog! I pulled car back and got out but it was gone after about 30 seconds! Gutted!!! But cool to see! First time I've ever seen one
Ohh nice. They are quite habitual in where they go amd when, if you look outside at around the same time you saw that one, there's a fair chance it will be in the area again. I have one that visits my front garden pretty much every night between 11 and 1230.
There lives a family of hedgehogs in my garden, and once I saw a very large female hedgehog hunt, kill and eat a fledgeling blackbird that was out of its nest but not able to fly yet. It never got the chance... Horrible sight, and something I never thought could be possible, but (sigh) that's nature.
I discovered a hedgehog in my garden ( wildlife sanctuary more like :) ) a few nights ago... it must have been attracted to the peanuts I put on the floor as no birds were eating them from my feeder. I have since found out peanuts can shorten the lifespan of hedgehogs due to the high fat content. My daughter in law told me they like cat food pellets and just plain water, so that's what I put out now just before going dark .. I saw two of them the other day :) I think they live in my old collapsed shed which is totally blanketed in undergrowth so they never get disturbed :)
How did you get videos of hedgehogs in the daytime?, I’ve got about three in my garden, I can tell I assume the males since they generally seem to fight over the food, smaller ones seem to tolerate each other so I assume they are siblings, and the larger ones that also seem to tolerate each other I assume are male and female?
Their number was as high as 36 million in the 1950s it’s very sad as this animal is becoming an endangered species. I remember some years ago taking my children to a hedgehog sanctuary in South Devon called Prickly Ball it’s sadly no longer there now and has since closed down
What do they do in the day time? Found one dead in the forest when returning from a walk. (it was not in that place when I left on the walk of about 2 hrs but dead on the small road /track on my way back)
@@AShotOfWildlife thank you. It was squashed and blood all over so I guess a car hit it. This part of the track can accommodate vehicles. Just wonder why it walked to that place in daylight. I know they can go quite fast as have seen them move at night. Love your channel especially the bird information.
Hello.Look I have one in my garage that looks tired,,, Don't know what to do...I have hugged him to keep him warm..He scratches a lot... Should I just leave him.. Plenty of food and water...
Hedgehogs are the gardener's best friend because they eat slugs, and an adult can eat 200 slugs in a week ! This is also why people shouldn't use slug pellets - a hedgehog can die from eating a poisoned slug. We're lucky to have a hedgehog that sleeps in our garage, being able to get under the wicket door and find a dry and frost-free spot inside, becoming our "pest control manager" by night. 😄
I’ve got hedgehogs where I live I put out dry cat food for them normally chicken but I’ve been told not to give them fish ones so does that mean I can’t give them tuna or salmon ones?
Correct, no fish, no meal worms. Chicken & duck based dry cat biscuits are best, place in a cat proof contraption! I always wonder if 🦔 know they are getting looked after by us? 😊
Hi Liam this is Yvonne I watch you"re programmes all the time I love animals me and my husband rescue wildlife, when able to do so:ps we care for two hedgehogs that can't be released
How brilliant! My local hog was very big a few weeks back so hopefully shes got some young somewhere nearby now. Good job on making the house for them, they need every bit of help they can get. Cheers
I know. it is crazy how many of the species that are in sharp decline in the UK are actually invasive in other countries. I wonder what NZ has that the UK lacks that hedgehogs like.
How many spines do hogs have? How much does an adult hog weigh? Why do they roll up into an impenetrable ball? What part of their body is spineless? What do they do during the day light? What do they feed on? Can they see well? What sense is well developed? Do they hibernate? Do they compete for females? How many days are female hogs pregnant? Do hoglets rely on their mom? What is the average lifespan of hogs? A habitat, go extinct, a litter, a sow, a life span, a life expectancy, in captivity, average, soil, hibernate, emerge, to mate, male, female, compete, give birth, hoglets, rely on, poor eyesight, a spine, defense, a predator, carrion, an invertebrate, impenetrable, fur

I cut an 8" hole low down in my back fence to allow hedgehogs in and got foxes and badgers as well.
That's great! I'm a little surprised a badger could get through an 8inch hole but it's nice to have them visit. We'll done.

I saw two of them the other day :) I think they live in my old collapsed shed which is totally blanketed in undergrowth so they never get disturbed :)
How did you get videos of hedgehogs in the daytime?,
I’ve got about three in my garden, I can tell I assume the males since they generally seem to fight over the food, smaller ones seem to tolerate each other so I assume they are siblings, and the larger ones that also seem to tolerate each other I assume are male and female?
Its a disaster that these wonderful creatures are on the decline and I reckon road kill has a lot to do with this. Great video Liam.
Nooo, i hope they don't get extinct over there! They have their own purpose. Quite fascinating fellows imo
(it was not in that place when I left on the walk of about 2 hrs but dead on the small road /track on my way back)
In the daytime they normally sleep in a nest of leaves, twigs etc. Perhaps something had moved the dead one you found.
Well done... So sad to think they could die out...
Hoglets 🦔 ❤️🦔
Nice one
I've seen a few sows in my lifetime the 2 legged kind
I saw one in the forest school which was the hedgehog🦔🌳
Hi Liam this is Yvonne I watch you"re programmes all the time I love animals me and my husband rescue wildlife, when able to do so:ps we care for two hedgehogs that can't be released
I have one male one female Hedgehog 🦔 in the garden made a hedgehog house for them they come every night
How brilliant! My local hog was very big a few weeks back so hopefully shes got some young somewhere nearby now. Good job on making the house for them, they need every bit of help they can get. Cheers
Found one In my garden today
I saw one just now, the first I've seen for a while. Every encounter with a living hedgehog is a great encounter!
@@AShotOfWildlife nice. I think the warm wet weather brings out the slugs and snails and then the hedgehog follow.
🦔🦔🦔
The hedgehogs in my garden love eating dried mealworms i put out....and ignore cat food!
😮 Meal worms are very bad for their bones! Although its like chocolate to them! Please only chicken, duck, beef cat biscuits or hedgehog food. 😊
Ive never seen a sign of hogs in my neighbourhood, its like they are extinct in that particular area but foxes always were common
The answer to the question everyone wants to ask but doesn't is..... the female hedgehog can flatten her spines to she doesn't prong Mr Hedgehog! 😊
Well, you got an insurance population of hedgehogs here in NZ, maybe we should start sending them back, they are a pest here.
I know. it is crazy how many of the species that are in sharp decline in the UK are actually invasive in other countries. I wonder what NZ has that the UK lacks that hedgehogs like.
what is the relationship between hedges hogs and hedgehogs?
They spend a lot of their time searching for food underneath hedges snuffling around so I think people put two and two together.
👍
Hedgehogs are lactose intolerant and should not be fed with, for example milk and bread.
It’s not nice when I see them squashed in the road, unfortunately I see more dead than alive ones."
A staggering 150.000 are killed every year on Dutch roads.
No mention that their numbers have fallen in direct proportion to the increase in badger population...
no hedgehogs :(
Your all probably here because of Sonic
I think you are the first person to mention sonic tbh, but welcome!
😊
