As of this moment I am watching three hedgehogs running around my garden at break neck speed
We live in the countryside and have a large-ish garden but have never seen a hedgehog in the five years we've been here, and we've often lamented the absence of such a creature in a rural garden setting, where they should be most prevalent - and once were. However, two weeks ago one appeared on the patio munching on the pile of bird seed we leave out for visiting pheasants and songbirds. Thrilling to finally see one. We've fed it cat food as per instructions and it seems to love it. Every night now it comes back just after dark to feast. Two nights ago we were walking back to the house at dusk down the lane when it suddenly appeared in the edge of the road/verge, scurrying along as fast as it's little legs could take it, and overtook us, oblivious to our presence walking parallel to it. It was obviously eager for supper! Ha ha!
It's so wonderful to finally have one visit and watch it at large. I hope with all my heart that these wonderful creatures will regain some more secure numbers in our land.
Is it just the one or has it got babies. I had one in my compost heap and it was snug as a bug in a rug
My husband has been moaning that our back garden was too messy. This last week we found a family of mum and at least 3 babies eating on our patio. We’ve been feeding them cat food every night since.
We hear them rustling in the fallen leaves from our bamboo (think that’s where they’re living)
So we got our reward for being the messy garden, I didn’t even think they could get into our back garden!
Yaboo sucks to our tidy neighbours with their astroturfing! 🦔 🦔 🦔
"just be a little bit untidy'
Yay, that's the one thing I'm really good at! lol
I recently saved a hedgehog that was about to cross a main road. I put it in my garden and it is very friendly. It is a wild hedgehog and yet it lets me pick it up and does not curl up in fact it is quite confident.
BADU GM wow! I live in the us where there are no wild hedgies.😭☹️😩
cool. I found one in my garden as well (my dog did) and after i put my dog inside and pilled him under leaves at my neighbours house
My experience was different. When I saw one in the road while driving, people kept saying it was an oppossum and its a pest and I have never seen animals like these before so I kicked it? I felt really bad and when I google hedgehog it was this one!! And I’m really glad that the way I kicked it was very slow and it didn’t got injured. Lol
He knows you saved him
@@b01p30 It also knows BADU GM's first name and is paying rent for staying in the garden 🙄
I`m now a proud mum of a Hedgehog I found drowning in a bucket of water my octogenarian mother left out.She was fed. She was massive...she had hogs...went away for 4-5 weeks last year 2018. Its February 2019....and she's awake!! Heck didn't expect it. I know she`s up....seen green poo. She must be hungry. She's a big hog. So, I`m feeding her again. She eats it all! Poor thing. I`ll look after her :)
Awwww bless your soul for taking care of them
Bless your heart 🙏
I'm 52 and still get super excited when I spot a hedgehog or frog in my garden lol
Great video.
Thank you for sharing 🦔🐸🌱
Thank you! I think even if you were 92 that's still not too old to get excited about hedgehogs and frogs!!
The Wildlife Garden Project sadly I am not allowed a pond and the nearest one is a few miles away, so I’ve never seen a frog
Me too - currently looking after a little hedgehog who was very shaky on his feet. He’s now walking great and gaining weight - he’s up to 350 grams. Although sure what weight he has to be to release him.
I heard a hedgehog in our garden a few weeks ago, so I left all the dried up leaves and could regularly hear it scurrying about in the hedges and leaves, tonight I had 2 hoglets rummaging grunting etc around the garden just after dusk, absolutely amazing, good video very informative thanks for the tips, Rich
Looks like they know a good thing when they see one
We're lucky to have hedgehogs on our property, and one has made its nest in the garage, which it gets into through the 6cm gap under the wicket door. It's safe from predators there, and the worst of the weather, and in return it does a great job of keeping the number of slugs down ! 😊
I have had up to 5 hedgehogs in my garden at any one time.
Pandora Piam I know,I see so many
Same at night if you go outside you can see them all walking through the leaves
So have I I'm proud to say
Good advice i love hedgehogs i like to watch my cams i have in the garden.I have 3 hog houses plotted up round the garden.Everyone seems to love watching them they are proper characters.
That food box idea is simple but genius.
Love hedgehogs, since I started leaving food out for one in my garden I hardly ever see a slug. Incidentally when leaving a corner of the garden a bit untidy it surprising how many wild birds starts coming back and eating all the bugs on your plants.
I wish people would shun slug pellets and poisons and encourage hedgehogs instead!
My fences have plenty of gaps under them thankfully and I keep cut down stuff in a large pile in one corner, hopefully making a good shelter. I did have a family of hedgehogs there one year.
Yea
I don’t use slug pellets, i use copper tape
Thank you! We discovered them on our garden last night!
Lived here for years and never noticed any. This year I've seen 4 in my garden... but it's averaging 3. 2 are residents, 3rd visits, 4th probably comes later on. Bought 1 house, made another and did a makeshift hut for the night as it's cold, using square plant pot, with another inside to give barrier from wind, all with hay and leaves. I change the flooring every night or every other night depending on the dirtyness in their food station, using pizza boxes or card, just to level it nicely as the plastic box is bottom end up and food is on the lid, so everything can be rinsed easier. I usually give 2/3 sachets of Wiskas or Felix meat in jelly and water, on my son's old plate with sections, it's easier to put food and water in, it's low level and hard to tip aswell. Minced up my son's dinner from yesterday for tonights meal along with usual, at least it's not going to waste! Mine prefer chicken and turkey. I didn't have cat food yesterday so cooked up some mince. Had some leftover and they've eaten everything else and left the mince lol they love mealworms and apples too. Enjoy your wild hedgies as they are lovely and endangered.
Best not give mealworms. They cause metabolic bone disease resulting in death.
They might be better without fruit? I wrote to the Hedgehogs Trust and they said hedgehogs don’t actually eat fruit. They may have fruit that is wind blown from something else they were eating but fruit isn’t something they pursue to eat.
Thank you very much! More to come!
Thank you for the advice on these lovely creatures, we have just set up some hog homes with cameras and mics in our garden, getting some great footage. It is great to watch them without getting in their way.
Care to ya :)
really nicely produced and presented video. well done all involved. great messages and getting good views and comments. fantastic
Really nice presentation, thanks very much. Hedgehogs have started visiting my garden most evenings now this Summer so this is all great advice.
Thank you for sharing.. I have a hedgehog in my garden and in the process of buying a little house for he or she, I feed each night at the same time and in the same place..
I want more wildlife garden videos
Your videos are awesome especially this one ! Hedgehogs are my favorite animals
Thank you for your tips, I will get start straight away xx
I really wish we had them in the U.S.
You have raccoons instead.
Max Larsen eh, they look cool,
But we have badgers that are nice in UK
Little Sonics, Sonias, Amys and Manics.
Not sure why you would want to! They are wild animals and need to rummage around many gardens to find enough food, so no, I wouldn't recommend trying to keep a hedgehog in your garden. If you put food and water out, and make sure there are gaps in your fences or hedges, you may be lucky enough to catch some glimpses of hedgehogs as they make their way from your garden to the next, which will be much more rewarding :)
My dog brought me a wild hedgehog which shivering and shocked and it fell from a bush it climbed in my back garden I brought it in and used my dogs old cage to make it a home until I released the hedgehog I named her greta and am releasing it into the wild on Saturday, it loved my company as I gave it loads of chicken to munch on. It got quite use to my scent, is that a problem? Like will it not want to be in the wild and come back or will it go enjoy freedom?
I found one with a broken leg in my garden. Took it to hog hospital. They said they had to remove its leg and I couldnt have it back because my garden wasn't enclosed. If you have a closed garden see if a hog hospital needs to rehome an injured one. You will need to provide it food all year round.
We found one eating some stray ferret pellets, so now put out hedgehog pellets and water.. So cute, have a chat every night
Lovely Video, I'm trying to catch my own Hedgehog footage as It brings a Lot of Joy - Thank you for Sharing
Thank you for this! Very helpful. I'm creating a garden now and this is very useful.
That's great to hear! Glad you found the video helpful! Good luck with your wildlife garden :)
I have hedgehogs in my garden for a few years now, have had the pleasure of upto 6 hogs at once but now only ever see the one large one I feed every night . They definitely reward me with getting rid of the snails but they are not keen on the slugs, think I feed them to well. Thank you for the video it was informative.
Great video! I love contemplating earth, discover and slow down...
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.
Love these videos, thank you!
A big thumbs up and thanks
This year I’ve had seven hedgehogs in my garden most nights, to the point now I have 3 feeding stations and 3 trail cams and I’ve now got a hedgehog house for hibernation purposes hopefully they’ll like it
Lovely, thank you.
I love hedgehogs they are wonderful
Thankyou i enjoyed this.
Hope the long long winter hasn't harmed the hedgehogs; thank you for making this video!
Beautiful video, nice work.
Have a nice day
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
I have several hedgehogs in my garden!
Great advice. I generally only get to see them when they come into our animal hospital
Thank you! We have hedgehogs in our garden
So beautiful animal....👍👍
This is great: really helpful, and concise. Well Done :)
marvelous
My friend in Wales has hedgies in his Garden and he loves them dearly. Just sent this vid to him so he can take care of them properly.
Luckily I have hedges all round my garden - I've just done a video of one eating cat food I put out. They do love their food as they eat all of it each time.
I live in a tiny village in North Yorkshire England, one pub no shops for miles and I live right next door to a pig farm (yep summer smells bad) I've lived here for seven years now and we noticed a hedgehog several years ago, I loved watching it walk around the three gardens on my lane but then the two elderly ladies that lived in the next two bungalows moved our to nursing homes, then we had two new sets of neighbours and the one next to me wanted to put up a five foot fence between us, once it was up I remembered about the hedgehog and asked if we could cut a hole in the fence for it but she refused as she has small dog's, so it didn't take long before we noticed the hedgehog had gone, it stayed like that for year's until a few months ago when we saw a hedgehog in the garden again and I can't describe just how happy I was, it's October now and I'm a little worried about the hedgehog as it's not that big and fat, I'm going to start putting out some meat a couple times a week and see how that goes, the only problem I have is not cats it's Rats, living right next to a pig farm we can get rats and mice in the garden and I'm worried that if i put out the meat I'm inviting more rats to my garden, they would even get into that feeding station shown in the video above, if anyone has any advice I would be very grateful, I love having my hedgehog visitor but would prefer not to have rat visitors who can and do get into the house, thanks y'all
I've got a couple coming into the garden at the minute. These ones are like the "punks" of the garden visitors, they leave their "calling cards" everywhere, upturn the water dishes and eat tons of dry cat food and mealworms. They're wonderful creatures though. I can sit outside in the dark and they snuffle around and if you're quiet enough, you get a little insight into their lives. Trying to get saucers away from them to refill is a job, they sit on the saucer and don't move, just squat and crunch away. The cat I used to have ended up sleeping on top of one during the winter in his outdoor hut at night, I made it too comfortable for the hogs and they moved in and one actually gave birth in the hut. When I was cleaning it out there was this small bundle of spines in my hand with a grin etched on its features...cute as anything. They do like their home comforts!.
Wow, that's so great that they chose to give birth in your hedgehog house! How did the babies get on? By the way, the advice now is to not give hogs mealworms. If they eat a few that have fallen off the bird table that's not a problem, but if they eat too many it can lead to metabolic bone disease. Just wanted to make sure you are aware. Sounds like you are doing a great job for them though!
@@wildlifegardenproject Thanks for the advice. I never knew that mealworms were that bad for hedgehogs. I'll stick to feeding the birds with them if possible. The hoglets that have all been born in the garden have all survived as far as I know. The problem is that living next to a main road is not an ideal location and I've seen my fair share of casualties over the past few years and it breaks my heart when I see that some got hit by the traffic and died. Every hog that appears in the garden gets a name from me. "Einstein", "Tesla", "Hawking"," Calvin" and "Sid" are just a few to have passed through and left an impression and I try to do my best to keep them fed and watered on the lead up to hibernation.
@@jamiefoyers2800 It is heartbreaking, but it sounds like you're giving the ones in your area a fighting chance! Love the names too!
@@wildlifegardenproject up untill 3 weeks ago I had 3 visiting on a regular basis 2 smaller and a quite large one. Now our street lights are these newer type very harsh bright lighting and immediately they have ceased visiting the street.
@@pegjames188 That's a shame, with any luck they'll get used to them after a while and come back.
Tuna from a can is my favourite.
Awesome
I love your video , it’s always important to help our little friends out & give them a helping hand , my best wishes 💚
Thank you! I absolutely agree!
I just uploaded a video where I handled a sleepy hedgehog and helped it back into it's hedge, it was out on the foot path. I now want a garden that will encourage hedgehogs to live there.
Thanks for the tips. Got one in my garden at this very moment. I'm from South Africa so have never seen one. Made a box home for now, gave water and cat food as stated 😍
That's great! It's so lovely to have them visit isn't it?
Brilliant video .. I have filmed and edited hundreds of hours of hedgehogs in my garden, but never once have they ever eaten a slug, the hogs and slugs quite often are eating the food from the same dish at the same time .. Has anyone ever see a hog eat a slug / snail ?
They don't eat slugs, it's a complete myth
Thank you I decided to put a wildlife cam in my garden to feed the fox who comes every night shockingly and we had beautiful hedgehogs come we never knew they existed by the sea
Awesome! That must have been lovely to see!
I’ve just got one in my garden and put some ham out for it, god knows how it got in here I live on a council estate
Me too. I saw a pheasent today too! I fed it some mealworms and suet pellets.
In Sweden it´s recommended to move the pile before lighting a bonfire, it it has been there for more than a couple of weeks.
First time I've seen a hedgehog in W Sussex garden in 30 years. It seemed content this morning. When I lived in Warwickshire several hedgehogs seen.
I live in the same area and for the past 3 nights I've found a hedgehog in the garden at around 1am, never happened before
Ravadge I see them every week, at around 10am
@@haroldinho9930 I don't see them anymore, but for about a week they showed up
WE have up to five hedge hogs a night in our garden the mothers bring the young in summer and we can have 8 or even 10 snuffing at each other ,i have found their favorite food is dry cat biscuits the small ones i buy a large bag for 3 pounds and it last about three weeks ,dry cat food fish flavored,,they crunch away for hours and are back every night but you need to put out a bowl of water as the biscuits are of course dry ,make sure the bowls are not to high as hedge hogs have short legs ,an old shallow dessert bowl is about right,,just add water and watch,,,
Hoglets, as their spines develop, always put me in mind of nailbrushes. 😂
Now I have my badgers time to try and get some hedgehogs. Any tips?
I have a big pile of logs at the bottom of my garden and wild area with a lovely family of hedgehogs so chuffed they are good size and I feed them chicken and fresh water daily so happy thank you for your advice (✷‿✷)
Sounds like you are doing a brilliant job! It's so lovely to see them gobbling away isn't it?
The Wildlife Garden Project I saw one eating the bird food, I don’t care though, they’re so cute and endangered
Had to take one recently to the vet because it had an infection in its eye
one got run over a couple of days ago in my road ...saw another young one in the road tonight so fed it with some cat food ... should be hibernating so am guessing not enough fat reserves to see it through ... will set up a feeding station tomorrow in my back garden ...
So sad :( But you are doing the right thing, they should be hibernating and your cat food and water could definitely help this young one survive the winter.
Hi wildlife garden project! Everyone, you should see their website!
It's all about tips to help wildlife!!
Thank you for your support! :)
I have hedgehogs in my garden and feed them every night. However I saw a small one that was very shaky on his feet about a week ago. Googled his weight and it said he was probably about eight weeks old. I popped him in a box and kept him indoors for a few nights, he’s now in a run in the garden as it’s warmed up again and has gained weight - gone from 290 grams to 350 grams. How heavy does he need to be before being released?
We have a garden that is literally perfect for
hedgehogs.
They eat the cat food that the cat didn’t eat and they made a hole at the corner of the garden.
I have a pet hedgehog in the US. But cool!
My experience with a hedgehog was quite different but expected.
I saw a dark blue hedgehog just looking away from me and when I went to confront it, the hedgehog ran away and I chased it, however It led me to a dark area of a forest, where the hedgehog suddenly stopped and then it revealed a fox's head torn off its body, a bloody echidna, body parts everywhere, and a freaking full grown man, he had glasses, and his arms were torn apart, literally the most gruesome scene I've ever seen... and the Hedgehog said in a demonic voice.. "I am god."
bro what
What are the best bushes to plant?
I've found two hedgehogs in my garden recently, one huge and one smaller yesterday. My garden is a walked Victorian terrace, and I have patio, not grass but I do have a lot shrubs flower beds etc, next door is a complete overgrown wild garden. I don't know what to do with then when they turn up, a vet said that if I found them in my garden I was to put them back where I found them, but is suspect they came from next door, so I put them n my garden and I don't know how they are making the journey. I will make a feeding station. Do you think they climb up the nettles and tumble over my wall. If so they can't get back, so should I lay a towel for them to climb? Please answer,
Cuties! Found a hedgehog in my tiny city garden :) will build a shelter & feeding box - but what do they make of dogs?
Shanti Baku they’d be scared of a dog I think
Darcy Black My hogs are fine with my dog, but you have to put the dog inside after you hear “WOOFWOOFWOOF”
Hello, could I have some advice please? I have a new wild hedgehog and I don't know how much of the winter it spent in its house. I only discovered it was there last week. I have a trail cam on the entrance now and am surprised by how little time it spends out of doors at night time. Only last night did I manage to prevent the local cats from getting inside its feeding station so I know it ate some mealworms and a good handful of cat biscuits, prior to that it has been going out a few times a night and staying out for about 40 minutes to an hour each time. After it came out of its feeding station last night it didn't even drink and it went straight back into its house and didn't come out again for the rest of the night. It seems abnormal behaviour; do you think it is poorly in some way? Weakened by a cold winter and in need of some assistance?
If you are going to compost it's a good idea to use worm bin
I’m just watching this for school
Found 3 baby hedgehogs in my green house 2 weeks back 2 vanished over a week ago, 1 has hanged about, been feeding it water and soft bird food, tried cat food but its not interested, wasn't sure if it was still young and should be just on milk, but then it has been eating some bird food, tried stimulating it to go toilet, but only managed a tiny bit of urine, not sure if it was old enough to pass by himself, bit worried about it being in the green house as so hot, last 2 nights I've come home from work its been outside the greenhouse and touched my heart as its come running over to me kinda squeaking out of excitement and tried cuddling into my leg, he really is a cutie pie , is strange thou, 2 years back in same place found family of 5 , we have no holes in our fence but they are coming and going some how
My hedgehogs were quite interested in my ground bird feeder
how are hedgehogs a spices still alive.? the seem to need so much help
That garden is a nice space for wildlife. I've had a hedgehog tapping on the catflap for the last week. I bought it a hedgehog house and left a large pile of leaves outside its' entrance last night. Today all the leaves have been taken, as well as the biscuit trail. I hope this means it has chosen the house for its winter hibernation. I want to check the food bowl and replenish it but am afraid to unscrew the lid and check inside in case the hedgehog has started its hibernation and I scare it away for good. Can you advise The Wildlife Garden Project, please?
Oh how lovely! Hedgehogs normally start hibernating October/November so it could be hibernating, or it may just be resting and could be out and about again tonight! I would put some more food and water outside the house and see if it's still there in the morning. You could also try propping some small twigs in the entrance and see if they have been disturbed in the morning. If they have, you know the hedgehog used the entrance. Some people do check inside their hedgehog boxes, but if you suspect they are using it it is probably best to leave them undisturbed. If you do check, then make sure you do it carefully and quietly and replace the top quickly once you have checked to minimise the disruption. Keep up the good work :)
@@wildlifegardenproject Thanks for responding. That's a good idea with the twigs. My cat is upset with me and thinks I'm playing the field by putting food out to entice other 'unwanteds'; she knows it not for her because its all the flavours she doesn't like!
@@hansiesma16 Haha! Cats think all food should be for them, don't they?
@@wildlifegardenproject Just to update you on my hedgehog. I peeked in the house this afternoon and it's there! Those leaves I left it have filled the whole house but not the entrance or corridor - it's jam packed , from corner to corner to roof. Does it take them in with its mouth? I know that it used the entrance last night so think it came out to eat 170g of wetfood. Am thinking as it licks the bowls clean that it could do with more food. I am absurdly pleased with this outcome!
Is there any way to leave food out without attracting all the neighbourhood cats? They even eat the bird food if its in reach...
Managed to capture one of the local hedgehogs visiting my feeding station on my trail camera in the early hours of the morning couldn't believe my luck, alas this was short lived as I accidentally erased the near perfect footage whilst editing it.
Oh no what a shame! Still, what a pleasure to have hedgehogs visiting. And hopefully they'll visit again so you can get more footage!
Any tips of keeping hedgehogs out of the garden my dogs keep going for them and I don’t want the hedgehogs to get hurt or die 🥺
I have captured a hedgehog on my camera for the very first time. It keeps coming back every night now as I put out a small bowl of clean water and some food for it. Is there anything else I can do for it?
Sounds like you're already doing a great job! You can buy or make a hedgehog house, but wood and leaf piles are great for them too. Also be sure to avoid chemicals and slug pellets in your garden. Feel free to share the video on our Facebook page - would love to see it! Laura
According to David Attenborough hedgehogs are very adept climbers & would have no difficulty scaling a garden fence. he goes as far to say that on one occasion a hedgehog was found upstairs in someone's property after climbing up the ivy. who's right here?
I used to have a football net and hedgehogs would always get stuck I have made a log pile and put hay in and I’ve got a nest!
I still do have a football net, luckily the grass is too short around that area so they never go there
Great video! Sadly, I came across a casualty on my doorstep, which I can only suppose was either mine or my neighbours cats. I still want to encourage Hedgehogs into my garden though. I understand that, whilst not unknown, cats can be curious but unlikely to attack. Please correct me if I'm wrong as I want to do the right thing by these quirky little critters.
Martha Loxy no not a cat. The cats here ignore hogs because the spikes on the back deters them. I’ve got 5 cats regularly in the garden at the same time as the hogs.
I love hedgehogs! They're brilliant creatures!..it's just a shame they eat caterpillars.we had a massive hedgehog in our garage and it was very noisy!!!
Do hedgehogs carry fleas?
What kind of hedgehog is that ? I want a grayish black one like that
its not for sale you mellon.
So no kicking it then?
There's a hedgehog that sneaks in my garden and my family calls the hedgehog Mr hedgehog
It’s most likely 5-7 hedgehogs, unless you see that’s it’s the same size and shape
Hi my mother has a hedgehog visiting her in the garden should they not be in hibernation by the way they move really fast
Apparently they might wait till early December before hibernating. I’m feeding one in my garden as well, after seeing it walking around in the middle of the afternoon, a couple of weeks ago!
How do you do this without attracting rats or mice?
I miss them. They are non existence now.
James Collins In some areas, I have about 10 in my garden
Can they not eat bird food
Would love to encourage them but every time I put food out either the foxes or rats eat it and the last thing I need is encouraging rats to frequent my garden for meals 😢 how do I help hedgehogs but not rats?
Are hedgehogs Australian
No, they’re live in Afro-Eurasia, Africa, Europe, and Asia, this is about the brown hedgehog, which lives in Europe
Edit:you can still get pet hedgehogs in Australia
What would you advise if one has small dogs who could use the hedgehog passways to esccape?
Hedgehogs only need 13 x 13cm holes - are your dogs small enough to squeeze through that?
@@wildlifegardenproject thanks for the quick answer. They are both the size of a yorkshire so yes they would fit through.
Never mind
@@dustinfisher29 Ah that's a shame! If you're sure they would fit through then I'm not sure what to suggest, apart from something that goes across the holes during the day and can be moved at night, assuming the dogs come in at night? Not ideal though!
Can I KEEP a Hegdgehog in my garden/backyard?
I don't mind helping out cute little hedgehogs, but most of the things you suggested are great for mice and rats. I don't want them in my garden.
I'm worried about getting rats if I put food out, any advice?
Yeah seems like it's part of the game with feeding hedgehogs unfortunately
I once saved a hedgehog from my back yard because my dog was trying to kill it so I put it on the ground a little bit close to a fire put some food in front if it it woke up until curled had some food and water I helped with it broken leg then it left
Well done for helping it, did it survive ok?
The Wildlife Garden Project I think so, all my hedgehogs survive fine with my dog, just curl up, I put the dog inside for bed, and then they go back to doing hedgehog things, I saw one in late May and it was at 8:00, still bright, captured a video of it
@@wildlifegardenproject it's did it's doing alot better
