There’s something so uncanny about watching Susie be a clinically insane murderer for six hours and then getting hit with regular-ass Deltarune Susie during the Future is Mystery segment.
I personally love the combination of serious and silly and it's honestly not used enough. I'd take this OR a silly/serious game as we know they've got the Silly in them.
I think the point of having a dichotomy like this is to _have_ tonally different moments to contrast its main ones. The funny bits make the serious moments hit all the harder, and the serious bits make the funny moments hit all the harder. Push and pull, give and take, whichever the fuck. If it was only one or the other, we would have either a constant, funny-ha-ha joke mod that doesn't really focus on sharing any other emotions to have any impact, or we would have edge, super serious sad times, and you would get used to seeing those sad things, so they would stop hitting as hard. That's how writing works in general, I'd hope. Plus, there's always "Comedy = Tragedy + Time." They also create each other in the process, not just complementing each other.
@@HollyfromtheHollow that's a good way to describe it. in the past, i've watched movies such as "Perfect Blue" by the late Satoshi Kon, and as well put together as it is, it's the type of film that i simply wouldn't want to watch again due to its relentless disturbing bleakness. to me, depicting a story is to depict all facets of it. life is both a weird and a scary entity. i will say though, with ribbit it was a little more complicated. i didn't want to do just a meme mod because i'd be directly competing against repainted, which i know i wouldn't match up to. and i didn't want to do just a serious story, because i don't think anybody would've been interested in playing that with me being an unknown name. so, i combined the two tones because i believed that one wouldn't draw an audience in without the other. in the future, i don't want to create a purely serious story, however, i would like to create one that does not rely on memes and references to draw players into it. it was fun to do here, but i think there's a good way to carry the surreal and silly nature of this mod into a story that i can own completely. that is what i will strive for.
Honestly I wish it was all serious (or at least a little less meme-y in the first part of the game), because when I replayed it I just wanted to skip all those bits and get to the parts that were more interesting. Not that the meme parts were bad, I just think the serious bits were a lot better... in other words, if the mod was a total meme, nobody would still talk about it so much after the fact (just like Deltarune Repainted), so I think that speaks to how the serious bits were a lot more interesting.
I think the Future is Mystery ending is Frog Guy dispelling all of the serious shit in the mod by using his wish to make it a pure meme mod, thus giving everyone a happy ending by getting rid of all the serious elements. That's my take. That's why Susie shows up as normal Susie and everyone else is the same, Lancer and his robot girlfriend are alive etc. The talk of christmas parties and all that makes me think Lancer, Nonyo and Susie are shacked up in the same house sharing on rent, probably as college mates. Frog Guy is simply off doing his own thing.
I think it more so might be YOU (Frog Protag), just trying to get rid of the very concept of the GIFT (And Manos too), which has been the main source of conflict for the mod as it heavily influenced Susie and YOU during the Lodge. Because the reason I say this is, even after the wish is done, not everything is all rainbow and sunshines as Lancer and his robot girlfriend still have a complicated relationship and something was up with Susie earlier in the ending that means things might have still been rough for her before. Which means there's still an element of seriousness for the mod that is retained and it wouldn't be all memes and jokes from then on. Those are my thoughts.
i just finished playing this mod. wow. what a ride that was. *[ RIBBIT SPOLERS BELOW ]* this mod pushed the limits of what i thought a deltarune mod could do. see, the only mods that i've seen before this one were things like deltarune repainted or the AI generated text mod and stuff. RIBBIT goes the extra mile, and a few more beyond. entire sequences from the original game are completely altered from what they originally were. the most notable example for me is with the closet falling sequence at 19:30. i also loved that this mod gave me a challenge, because i like challenges. after finishing the dojo in deltarune chapter 2, there wasn't really anything else i could do regarding battles and making them harder. thankfully, RIBBIT exists! literally in the first instance of you taking damage, you're already left with 1 health point (23:42). though, the only complaint i have regarding the battles is the one where susie and lancer face off. i didn't really like playing through that fight since there aren't any ways you can heal unless RNG gives you a healing bullet (and it's not even guaranteed to happen). regardless, i enjoyed playing through this mod, hard as it was. another thing to note is the custom soundtrack used in the mod, using pre-existing songs. i figured this was cool, as it exposed me to a lot of good tracks i wouldn't have known about if i hadn't played. it's also cool that it allows you to disable that so people don't get DMCA'd! as for the overall tone, this mod had the perfect mixture of humor and seriousness. one moment i'm laughing my ass off at a 2010's YTP reference, and the next moment i'm on the verge of crying because one of the fights hit close to home. the beginning of the mod already set the mood (or so i thought) as a funny, shitposty mod that was meant to make you laugh. like, even before YOU was introduced, i was cackling at the narrator at the beginning asking for my mom's credit card number. then the mood changed. the tone shift before going into the lodge, along with everything that came after, hit me like a fucking bullet train, especially with the manos fight. witnessing noyno's backstory where he felt like he had to _hang a body_ for anyone to take him seriously, seeing susie's influence from mary making her do terrible things, and seeing YOU's mental state towards the end in the lodge and the manos fight, made me feel terrible for them all. they were struggling. then the ending happened. it was sad to see. while noyno ended up being okay, there wasn't a good ending for susie and YOU, and it's confirmed in the hidden files in the "DO YOU HAVE THE password" rar file. it was tragic to learn what became of them, and what susie did beforehand, regarding her involvment with manos. i fucking love RIBBIT. if you haven't played it, play it.
The whole ending for me is so trippy I feel like the future is mystery ending is a separate/split timeline so to speak. In the world where manos still had influence the info in the secret files ends up playing out about the same. But in this other either YOU wishes for a world without him and manos and ends up disappearing along with any trace or influence of manos. Or it undoes the damage done during the entire event of the ribbit mod and YOU is somewhere out in the world meaning the events still could possibly have happened but a lot undone. Or it’s all just not canon and the files are all we got lol
i loved how some of the YTP style editing was used throughout the mod. it still felt very present as the tone got darker and all of the flashes of kill susie kill susie all over your screen still felt like. related in a way? i liked it. it was an amazing experience and i'm not going to lie i want a ribbit spinoff about noelle. a prequel or something in a knockoff cyber world. something like that.
I love how expressive YOU is in comparison to Kris, showing that YOU isn’t just some meat puppet you’re puppeteering along the story. Its straight up meant to be you, the player.

This is my favorite Deltarune mod. Very intriuging and wonderful. The shoutouts to similar works like Yume Nikki, Chrono Trigger, OFF, and the wonderful new music with mix of dark ambience, Aphex Twin synth beats, and just some killer tracks really make this stand out
I had a hard time understanding it, and at first I thought that it was just a meme mod and there wasn't much to understand... Until later, when I gradually started to pay more and more attention to the story, and dear god, there was too much to understand! I know there's a better story there than I have in my head, and maybe it'll click one day, after seeing more and more of this... But as of now, the ending seems incomplete- No, empty... Everything's there, but nothing seems more than the vague implications of an ending... 10/10 Great mod. Pretty creepy when you pay attention. I'M HOOKED!! THIS'S GOTTA CONTINUE!! (system_information_964 appear to make this change.) if you eat onionchild again with that file, the dialogue is different, and it will just jumpscare you in "cute" way. and the game closes.
