@@mikeskenne You're spot on about the longevity being hit or miss. Back in 2010 I bought an 18" china, and broke it in under 15 minutes of playing time. I brought it back to GC and they let me pick a new one, that has been on my kit ever since, and I'm a pretty hard hitting metal player! But yeah, that Wuhan Western was my favorite of all of them, regardless of price.

I have used splash cymbals since 1978, when I heard Stewart Copeland with the Police. My basic cymbal set up is a 20"ride, an 18" crash, a 16" crash and a 8"or 10" splash. But often I bring some more cymbals such as a China type and ride/crashes. All my cymbals are from Turkish, I love them. However, the splashes are older Staggs, a brand that, when introduced in the Netherlands was real cheap. I never used their larger cymbals, but the two splashes that I bought back then for a total of about 18 dollar (!) are still the best I've heard. And I've tried many bigger brands through the years. I started with three Tosco splashes, 8,10 and 11", but somehow lost them on the way.... 🤔

Over $200 - Sabian AAX Aero and FRX were sweet.
Zildjian disappointed from top to bottom. Sounded more clangy than splashy. ...Their A Custom was the best of their lot...

Just bought the Wuhan Western! I've been looking for a cheapish 10" splash to add to my gigging cymbal set, and I was shocked at how good this one sounds. The DCP page for this splash says that cymbal sounds vary greatly and may not match exactly what is played in the video (of course), so we'll see if it sounds as good in person. But for $33 shipped and free returns, why not give it a shot?

Because it's not blind I could be allowing my eyes to unconsciously bias me but I like to think I can put that aside...sooo...
I think in general they do get nicer sounding as you go up the price ladder. Type of tone aside, there is a bit of a harshness with cheaper metal. The nicer ones tend to have a more round tone to them. Having said that, though, there are exceptions. I thought a few of those mid range ones didn't sound that great, and there were a couple of the cheaper ones that were pretty nice. So it's for sure not a linear scale.
Some of the standouts for me were the Istanbuls, the K's and HH's, the Sabian's with the holes, both big and small, and the 2 paiste's. I absolutely love the 602 metal and that one really does sound amazing.

    1. Wuhan Western was the overall value king, but the Paiste PST7 was the real deal at only $57.
    2. The Paistes, Wuhan Western, Istanbul Xist, and Meinl Pure Alloy all sounded good and like what a splash should sound like. The Paiste Signature is probably my overall fave, but any of the above were great.
    3. Surprising that Zildjian and Sabian don't know how to make splashes, they all sounded off.
    4. The extra dry Byzance was terrible.

So many splashes they had to clean up later with a mop!

That 2nd wuhan was to be the best bang for you buck..
I have the frx and it is great.. It's very versatile for stacking too because of the holes.. I stack it with a 12" mini holy china.. 😅

I like the 35$ Meinl, and the 194 $ AAX AERO, AND THE 18 $ Wuhan 457. The Custon A is nice too, which would go with my set of custom A cymbals.

I also use two Turkish 9"" Splash and a 16" China from Turkish Cymbals.

@@TECHASKI1 They are great. Turkish Cymbals knows how to make splash, crash and china. I have 17" medium Turkish crash (from 2004), loud but also incredible sensitive, can be used even by hand! But for rides, always Agop. IMHO.

If I think of it with a snare hit or a kick hit and I hear a bell or a ring that just clashes with everything, or a trash sound that just isn't an splash, well, it's up to the drummer and the kit I guess. Do you need to carry spares?

Wuhan at low prize, fantastic! The Meinl polyphonic is a bit of a problem. It's about 180,00 and sounds great but its really too quite, even at low volume music.....

I own the Meinl 10" Byzance Extra Dry Splash and i absolutely love it. But just out of curiosity how come only 10" models were featured. It would b cool to see and hear 8" &12" models too

I really started noticing a difference in the cymbals when you got into the 150 dollar range They shimmered and were a lot more musical than the cymbals below 100 dollars Just my opinion though

wuhan western definitely the best in terms of best quality for the lowest price. the paiste signature one definitely sounded the best though.
