I've always played Pearl kits, and in 2018 I fulfilled my lifetime ambition of getting a Pearl Masterworks kit, which is my pride and joy. Obviously I knew that Tama and all of the other manufacturers made brilliant gear as well. I also bought a Tama Starphonic 13"x7" steel snare drum at the end of 2021. It's the only Tama product I own. I paid about £300 in the UK for it, and for the quality of the materials, components, and the finish, it was a bargain really. I'm massively impressed with the components and how they perform, the workmanship and finish, the design featurers, and so on. Watching this video made me like Tama even more. Magnificent manufacturer, magnificent retailer.
Never owned a Tama set but they are one of several companies that brought quality and innovation to the drum industry. This was really enjoyable to get a behind the scenes look of their process. But what Shane said about independent drum stores was more important. Just purchasing from somewhere based on price is really a terrible race to the bottom. I was just in Portsmouth this past Thursday and spent several hours in the store. Tony and Barrett spent so much of their time with me discussing drums and hardware and never made me feel rushed. It was more like visiting with friends (and thanks to the both of you for helping me nail one of the last Noble & Cooley Copper snare drums available). You can't get that experience from an Amazon. And Shane has amazingly created an online presence that "feels" like his store. There is a value to the independent drum store that you can't put a dollar value on. It's so very important for us as drummers to always support these places with our drum and equipment purchases, big or small.
Agreed! @drumcenternh, please do this for Meinl. I'm gonna be loading up on about 20 new Meinl cymbals in the next year or so and would love to look behind the curtain at the facility, people, and process.
Loved the jacket. Loved the drums. Loved the playing. Loved the factory tour. Loved Shane's choice of the Reserve snares. And particularly liked the bit about supporting the independent dealers. Class. 👍🫡
I say storytime with Shane should be a new series. We can listen at the campfire in the summer and home fire in the winter while knitting sweaters for the cool DCP cats.😊
Had a Pearl clear acrylic double set (I play on monster kit) that I bought in the mid 70's. Now I've long since retired so I did myself a final gift (I'm 68) and bought myself (with my wife's blessing) A Tama Starclassic Walnut Birch Molten Brown Burst Set with all the sizes. Since this was during co-vid they had to come directly from China. Took over a year to get my final set. I bought these thru Sweetwater which is the ultimate for buying anything musical. NO chance of not getting what you paid for. These drums sound stellar. Could've bought Ludwig, Yamaha, Gretch, or any of the other drum manufacturers but I wisely chose Tama. Paid cash because I'm spending our sons inheritance. You absolutely can't go wrong with Tama. Sweetwater as well.
Starclassic Maple owner here. I grew up in the 70s playing Slingerland and Ludwig. I bought my dream shell kit in 2005 from West Coast Drum Center in Santa Ana, CA where I studied under the tutelage of Johnny Byrn (KC & the Sunshine Band). I don't plan to replace these TAMA's in my lifetime. Such great sounding, tuning and looking drums.
Tama is really the king in my opinion. My only gripe with their current high end drums is that the rock tom system makes some tom mic clamps incompatible or very difficult at best to attach.
Oh how I'd love to own a TAMA Star Walnut kit!!! I have 2 Starclassic kits and 1 Artstar kit but my goal is to one day have a STAR kit!! I bought one of my Starclassic kits from you guys!!
Most entertaining and informative drum channel on UA-cam. Been watching you for years and thank you for this behind the scenes of one of the finest made drums. Will definitely consider DCP for my next drum purchase.
Man, Shane! Just to ride the bullet train to the factory from Tokyo, oh yeah! Truthfully, a great video and tribute to a worthy company. I own a Kawasaki motorcycle, so there you go!
Completely agree, Shane, with your comments both about “unnecessary, but great to hear” regarding Tama Star (I have a Star Walnut AIJB), and about independent drum stores. Mine is in Newcastle, NSW, Australia, and has been my first, and often only, port of call for over 40 years!
I own a Tama Silverstar kit and have always felt that Tama in China approached the making of this kit as an opportunity to rival the quality in sound and versatility of their top of the line kits from Japan.
They didn't when I special ordered an Artstar custom kit in 2001. All of the drums had buffing scratches on them and the 2 floor toms had long deep scratches running down the entire length of the sides. The bearing edge on one of the kicks had a big chunk of wood missing. These drums were shipped in really small boxes with no bubble wrap. I switched my order to a Pearl MRX kit. I previously owned a Rockstar DX and a Rockstar kit. Those kits were great and I was a diehard Tama fan until my poor experience with the Artstars and Tama's lousy customer service. The salesman at Sam Ash used to work for Hoshino which is right down the road from me. He told me all about Tama and their business ethics. The person who dealt with my order lost their job because they couldn't convince me to take the drums at a bullshit discount. I will never buy anything from Tama. Fuck them!
Hand hammered wood shells? I'll be right over! Lol. Looks like a fun trip. And I agree on the HH raw bell dry ride. I've used it for rock, big band and most everything in between!
If I lived local to New Hampshire I’m sure you guys would be my local store just based on the vibe. My local store is Musos Corner in Newcastle Australia, these guys have looked after me since I began my musical journey a little over 15 years ago now. They have the same vibe, and same enthusiasm for the products that you guys do, and I can’t recommend supporting the small/mom and pop businesses enough, these are the heartbeat of any economy, of any industry. Big stores lose that personal touch, but when I go to Musos I know I’m always going to get the rundown on some new piece of gear that they know will probably interest me! Keep up the great work and bringing this energy to the internet. I always love looking for Tama related content and you guys are always the first I’ll go to!
My first semi-real kit as a teenager was a Pearl Export, and they hold a special place in my heart, but there's just something about Tara. The choices they make in finish, hardware, and all the rest. Tama is my Japanese jam. I have a relatively low priced Chinese made Tama Metalworks Steel 6.5x14 Special Edition with black hardware and black die cast rims, and the quality in the build and finish of this drum rivals drums 5X the price. Bravo Tama and Bravo Shane!
I can attest to Tama's care for QC. I ordered a beautiful Bubinga Star Classic 7 pcs. kit. After a while I noticed that there was a flaw in the 16" flr. tom. Tama was notified & I sent them a picture of the flaw. Very quickly, a new 16" tom was sent back to me. I'm not a famous drummer, but it didn't matter to Tama. Incredible.
Great video! You’re a lucky man Shane! Great shout out to Rej at Dale’s! He’s an awesome dude and always treated me good when I made the 2-2 and half hour trip from West Virginia to PA!!! Some day I’ll make it to Portsmouth!
Tama will always have a place in my memory, I've played an 11 piece Starclassic Maple custom made in Japan in 2004 for almost two decades. Absolutely incredible drums, they record so well. Then I switched to Sonor SQ2s a couple of years ago, same amazing high-end quality and a different kind of sound. Purchased here at DCP, great team and great customer service. Thank you guys! 🤘🏻
Very cool trip! I bought my Tama Starclassic in Tamo Ash from yall and I absolutely love it, such a great tone and quality product. This video only reinforces my decision to go with Tama. Cheers!
Totally enjoyed the video. In general, there is just something special about Japanese manufacturing. It seems they take so much pride in whatever they produce, with quality and craftsmanship the top most priority. And Shane, I have to say, your drumming keeps getting better and better.
Wow what a great video. Tama and Sabian are my two favourite brands. That kit is truly inspired and beautiful. Love your content. Big love and respect from me in the UK. I hope to visit you one day. ❤
Wow! I was between the Tamas and the Pearls that I now have. I had a 9 piece Tama Granstars which were the same shell composition as the Superstars at the time, birch. They had just come out with the square shells, so I did that and I loved those drums dearly. I sold them like an idiot and have always regretted it. Tama has always delivered, I am wondering now if I shouldn’t have done the Tamas? Well, I love my Pearls, but I have always loved Tama drums and this video got me excited about them.
@@drumcenternhI thought the ring was rather harsh. The bass drum had a really good, loud attack/crack. I think it would sound even better with a port

Hey Shane, that must have been an awesome trip! Those drums sound incredible! Look amazing too! Thanks for all you do for the drumming community! Always love watching your videos. Tama are an incredible company. Keep up the passion! DC

Fantastic video as always. Beautiful kit. This video solidified my decision to go with Tama for both my smaller (8 piece) gigging kit, as well as my Mike Portnoy-esque monster dream kit. I'm coming from St. Louis to visit you in July and we'll talk. DCP has my business.
@@drumcenternh Thank YOU! John Funk just helped me become the proud new owner of my new gigging kit. 5-piece Tama Starclassic Walnut/Birch shell pack in Molten Blue Ice Fade. Does anyone at DCP or here on UA-cam happen to remember the name? It was a great example of the creativity of Tama's finish team.) Really interesting that the Star series gets Remos. Perhaps they sound more open than G1s.
As for Remo, the nonsense about Remo heads sounding better on Star drums is just that - nonsense. Tama’s decision to use Remo is done for business reasons, not sonic ones. Stop deceiving us Tama, you’re better than that. I have two Star kits and nine Star/Star Reserve snares. My Evans sound great on those drums, and better than the stock Remo’s to my ears. If you prefer Remo, that’s what will sound and feel better to you. If you prefer another brand, those will still sound best.

I wish they made more of their pro level kits there. Make Tama Japanese again.

First time seeing something like this from Tama. THANK YOU! Too bad I live in California.
