    I think this game is one of the most cleverly designed I have ever played. The game system is so simple, but the amount of depth in that simplicity is staggering. Not only in a simple 1 v 1 duel, but also the flexibility of the system. It's like the Swiss Army knife of my collection. There are so many modes of play and so many variants within those mode that exploring it all will take a LONG LONG time.

    Love battlecon. Played a bit of War of Indines and recently got Devastation (which I haven't played yet sadly)... man that game was a BEAST to unbox, I still have no idea where to put some of the stuff that comes in that box, or if I did it properly. Either way, this game is REALLY fun, I was quite surprised to see a fighting game like this to work so well in a non-video game format.

  • @granearl2438
    @granearl2438 8 років тому

    Great explanation, even if I almost fell asleep towards the end (literally, but that's because I have only slept for two hours).
    So basically, tokens are provided, you start with all of your cards in your hand and characters in the mentioned spots, then discard two attack pairs at your choice. After that you choose an attack pair face down and start the token ante-ing until both players pass. Attack pairs are revealed and all effects solved (damage, soak and stuns included) in priority order. Then recycle occurs, tokens are replaced if necessary and you discard used pair and recover the first one of the two initial discards, then advance timer unless an effect specifies otherwise.
    Please let me know if I missed something or got something wrong.

    • @LycheeSago
      @LycheeSago 9 років тому

      Going to chime in. You would pick side A generally when you know your opponent is a ranged character or someone who prefers to stay away, it's primary use is to lockdown your opponent for the next beat so that you could set up something like Martial Aegis or Martial Strike for example(though that's kind of predictable so maybe . Side B is for against the brawlers or close combat styled opponents, I consider it a get-out-of-jail-free card(or "be really reckless) that has the potential to do a tremendous amount of damage since it's power is 3 times the printed attack pair, Do it if you know you're going to get hit hard, maybe ante up a few tokens for more stunguard if necessary and go to town.

      @@WatchItPlayed *Damn* you're fast on replying on a 7 year old video!
      Thank you very much for answering, but I think I will just get the one you got _(BatlleCON:Devastation of Indines)_ as it is on the highest rank in BGG. The game looks amazing and I am still looking for a Game with a duelist one on one thematic for my collection, which I try to keep as slim as possible and keep it to one or two games for each genre and it's kind of hard with so many great entries.

      @@links-gut-versifftergrunme1809 So glad the video was helpful! (and I suspect this version is an ideal starting point). As an aside, if I'm doing my job right, there's no review element in these videos at all. They are just meant to teach the game, but hopefully, through showing the game, viewers can decide if they might be a good fit for their tastes or not. Have a great time playing!

    1.
    if a attack pair has a range of 1-4 , i understand that there will be a hit if opponent falls between 1-4 spaces away . But if a attack pair simply says range 4 , does it mean hit only works at space 4 or also works like 1-4 range ?
    2.
    what is the difference between 'on damage' and 'on hit' ? able to quote some example ?
    Thanks alot.

    • @WatchItPlayed
      @WatchItPlayed  10 років тому +3

      1. Only at 4.
      2. You may hit, but you may not damage (if the damage is blocked).
      Hope that helps.

    One other quick question: What happens to the cards in the stack after you perform a clash? At first I assumed they all went into the first discard pile, but that doesn't actually work. Let's say you keep clashing, and with each player's final base, FINALLY the two players have a different priority and the attack goes through. On the next beat... neither player has any bases in their hand to form an attack pair. Do the cards in the clash stack come back to your hand?
    Also, thanks so much for making all of your fantastic videos! It's gotten to the point where whenever I find a board game that interests me, one of the first things I do is head to this channel to see if there's a video on it, since your instructional videos are so clear and easy to follow, haha. They really help me decide if I think I'll enjoy the game, and make it so I already know 90% of what I need to know in order to start playing as soon as I get it. So thanks a bunch!

    If someone help me with this topic yet... i got this game now, and some rules is not very clear like: "lesson 1: Range - the first time one of your attack misses an opponent who is closer then its minimum range, your attack hits anyway". So that attack with range 3~6 hits the opponent in range 2 or miss?

    • @WatchItPlayed
      @WatchItPlayed  7 років тому

      My understanding, is that it's saying "Your range with this is 3-6 spaces away, however, if your opponent is 1 or 2 spaces away, then the first time you use this attack, it will actually hit (even though, it would normally miss because 1-2 is not within the proper range).

    • @CrowRichi
      @CrowRichi 7 років тому

      Yeah, i just find out. It is like you say. That cards in Devastation box is for, to teach other player the game. Thats why it seys "..your attack hits anyway, then discard this card". War has the simplier characters to begin with.
      Devastation has more characters, some of them are ok to begin with.
      Fate has harder characters but is more "updated" for tournaments.
      Personnaly, I have Devastation first, then War. I don't want fate and the new game "trial" because 48 characters is far enough :) I don't care about tournaments.

    I know this video is now long dead, but should you get this and answer it, it will be a good wee pointer to any of those who get into the game (and help me out a bit as well, though I'll probably read the manual to find out)
    2 Wee questions
    1- VERY rarely a style card will have negative Range. One case (and for all I know there is only 1 :D) I can think of is Karin and Jeager's Howl Unique base. It has -0~1 range. I was just wondering out that works out is applying it to a style with only a single digit range (so for example Range 2 and Range -0~1)
    I took it as since it was taken from a Marker, to which you can stand on, the minimum range would be taken to 0~0.
    2- How does Power value gains work? If a card has a printed power of -1 and the effect on the card said "after X event this card gets +5 Power" for example. Would you just add up the power of the style and base then add the +5? (so say -1+1+5=5) or Would the -1 become +5 so +5+1=6 power.
    I have a feeling I'm over thinking these but wee nigglies that came up whilst playing. The card system really is easy, sit and watch this great tutorial and go through a game or two. You won't even realise that you played 6 games in a row not even once thinking about when things happen or how they work. Great Game easily now my No.1 game at the moment.

    • @WatchItPlayed
      @WatchItPlayed  10 років тому +1

      Long dead? I work pretty hard to ensure any visitor to our videos, new or old, find me ready to reply.
      I'm not sure on your first question, might be worth asking that on the games forums, but for the second one, it would be "5".
      Never wrong to over-think things, that's how you figure out how things really work - keep it up :)

    • @IJoinedThisSite
      @IJoinedThisSite 10 років тому

      *****
      Haha sorry Rodney, that was the wrong words. I mean your video is linked on their box, you vid will never die :D Consider it a problem of writing a message at 3 in the morning.
      As for the Range question, I'd imaging you work it out the same as a positive range. So Range -0~1 and paired with 2 would be 0~1 (Not -2~1 thus making 0 a minimum value range can be, Since there would be never any point attacking behind you :D)
      But thanks for the reply, and so quickly!

      I'm not quite sure what their intentions are with those extra bits.

      You may find that things simplify when you see the game being played. We'll be releasing those episodes soon. Then again, everyone has a different tolerance for complexity, so there's no shame in discovering a game may not be a good fit for you.

      All that is true. I will see how it runs when the gameplay videos come out :D No worries, I will play any game once. It just sounds long winded, and a lot of "This happens if, and when this happens..." This comment is not meant to knock your videos at all. In my opinion, you are my new favorite game reviewer! Keep up the good work!

      ***** Might just mean the game is not a good fit for you. Check out our gameplay examples in the later videos, that may help clarify some things!
