This "fulcrum" explanation for the bulging center is probably not right. Although the rim of the plate falls, you can't liken it to a lever because no force is being applied to that side of the lever. Instead, it falls because it becomes less stiff.

How would you trim a plate for wall hanging? Would you undercut the foot? Or add a piece of clay for a wall mount?
